1:	ЖѝТїЄ И СТРАДàНІѦ ГРѢШНАГО СѠФРОНїѦ	(Title) Life and Toils of Sophronius the Sinful
2:	Áзь грѣ́шныѝ вь чл҃вцѣхь роди́х сѧ на се́ло ко́тель	I, the (most) sinful among humans, was born in the town of Kotel
	ѿ ҆о́ц҃á влади́слав а ѿ мáтеры марı́а,	to father Vladislav and mother Maria,
3:	и положи́ли пе́рвое ҆и́мѧ моѐ Стѡ́їко:	аnd they gave me the first name Stojko,
4:	и̂ като́ с͛мь бы̀ль трѝ лѣ́та, престáвила сѧ мáти моѧ́,	аnd when I was three years old, my mother died,
5:	҆и ѿ ҆оц҃ь мо́и поѧ́ль дрꙋ̀гою женꙋ́,	and my father took another wife,
	що́ бе́ше лю́та ҆и завистли́ва,	who was fierce and envious.
6:	҆и родѝль са͒ неѧ̀ мꙋ́жес͛кое дѣ́те,	And he beget with her a male child,
7:	҅и то́кмо свое́ дѣ́те гле́даше,	and (she) was taking care only for (her) child,
8:	а̂ мене́ все́ ѿри́тваше:	and she was taking no heed of me.
9:	и̂ като̀ бых де́вѧт годѝни,	And as I was nine years old,
	подадо́ха ме на кни́жное оуче́нїе,	they sent (lit. gave) me to learn literature,
10:	понапре́ди не бы́ возмо́жно да поѝдꙋ на оуче́нїе,	Earlier, it was not possible to learn,
11:	почто́ повы̀ше болен и немо́щех бѣхь,	because I was mostly ill and sickly.
12:	и̂ като́ пои́дох на оуче́нїе,	And as I went to learn,
	голѧ̀мое прилѣжáнїе ҆и ҆о́строꙋ́мїе ҆ѝмахь,	I was enthusiastic and intelligent,
13:	҆и вско̀рѣ ис͛ꙋчи́х сѧ про́стое чте́нїе,	and I quickly learned the basics.
14:	понѐже оу болгарı̀а не и́ме фїлосо́фское ҆оуче́нїе на славе́нскїѧ ꙗ̂зы́кь,	(And) because in Bulgaria there are no philosophical studies in Slavonic,
	наче́нах да ҆оучи́мь по гре́ческїи ꙗ̂зы́к	I began to learn Greek,
15:	҆и ҆из͛ꙋчи́хь ҆ѡктои́хь,	and I learned Octoechus.
16:	като́ наче́нах ѱалтыр,	As I began (to learn) Psalter,
	прїи́де вѣ́сть кáко са престáвиль ҆о́ц҃ь мои́ на цр҃игрàдь	a message came to me, that my father died in Tsarigrad,
	ѿ чꙋ̀ма та вь лѣто ·1750·	from the plague in the year 1750.
17:	҅ѡстáнах ҆áзь без͛ ҆о́ц҃à ҆и без мáтер.	I remained without a father and a mother.
18:	тогѝва бѣ́хь ·аı· годи́ни.	I was then 11 years old.
19:	тоги́ва ме ҆оузе́ стры́и́ моѧ на мѣ́сто сы́на,	Then, my uncle took me as a son,
20:	почто̀ не́ ҆имаше чáда,	because he had no children,
21:	҆и предàде мѧ на занаѧ́ть.	and he gave me to (learn) artisanship.
22:	҆и като́ бы́хь седмь нá десѧт години,	And as I was 17 years old,
	престáви сѧ ҆и стры́и́ ҆и́ стры́на мо́ѧ	also my uncle and my aunt died,
23:	на ско́ро ҆единь са͒ дрꙋ́гїи́.	one soon after another.
24:	҆алá и̂ стры́и́ мо́и́ на цр҃игрáд ҆оꙋ́мре	But also my uncle died in Tsarigrad,
25:	поне́же бѣхà ҆и двои́ца та џеле́пы.	because the both were sheep traders,
26:	҆и понꙋ́дꙋ́ша ме до́лжницы ҆и ҆ѡтрàцы не́говыи́ да поѝда на цр҃иград на мѣ́сто сы́на ҆егѡ́	and his creditors and companions forced me to go to Tsarigrad in place of his son,
	да собирем що́ ҆и́маше да ҆оузе́ма ҆о̀нь пари́ ѿ касáпи те	so that I collect what he had, to take money from the butchers,
	по џеле́пское ҆ѡбычáи́.	as it was a custom among sheep traders.
27:	҆алá като̀ са касáпы те по всáде разне́сены по цариград ҆и по ҆анато̀лскаѧ стрáна.	But as the butchers are spilled everywhere in Tsarigrad also on the Anatolian side,
	оꙋ́ е̂ди́нь- дѐнь хо́чехме са͒ е̂дногѡ́ ҆ѿрáка него́ваго да пойдемь оꙋ́ ҅анадо́лскаѧ стрáна,	one day we wanted to go with one of his servants to Anatolian side,
28:	҆и пои́дохме на ске́лѧ та	and we went to the harbor,
	да проминем са͒ лáдїа:	so that we could pass on a boat,
29:	҆и гле́дамѧ- при́ цáрски те палáты лáдїе,	and here we look on the ships at Imperial palaces.
30:	҅а ны́и́ чл҃вцы про́сти,	But we, simple men,
	като бѣ̀ха ҆о́ны- бли́зкꙋ до юскꙋдар	as they were close to Üsküdar,
	по҆и́скахме са͒ ҆о́ныѧ лàдїѝ да проми́нем на ҅юскꙋдáри	we decided to go with those ships to Üsküdar.
31:	҆и като́ ҆ѿхо́ждахме до них	And, as we were embarking,
	гле́даме на ҆едно́ мѣ́сто наро́дь мно́го	here, we look at many people at one place,
32:	҆и́ дво́҆ица пехливàны бо́рѧт сѧ,	and two wrestlers fight each other,
33:	и̂ ѿ го́рѣ ҆и́маше высо́кїи́ палáты,	and above us there were high palaces,
34:	не знàи́мѧ	we know not,
35:	҅алá мо́жаше да бꙋ́де ҆и сáмыи́ цàрь тàмо.	but there could have been the Emperor himself inside.
36:	҆и като̀ престáнаха ҅о́ны ѿ боре́нїе,	And as the two stopped fighting,
	повлѐкоха да пои́дꙋть камто̀ цр͒ки те палáты всы́ѧ ҅оныѧ наро̀дь,	they dragged (began to move?) all the people towards the Imperial palaces,
37:	и̂ ны́и́ са͒ тѧх ве́дно, пои́до́хме	and we went with them together,
38:	҆и стáнахме ме́ждꙋ̀ цр͒кїи по́рта ҆и междꙋ́ ꙗ́̂ли кїѡшкjꙋ̈	and we stopped between the Imperial gate and Yalı Köşkü,
	що́ бѣ́ха тàмо ве́рзани цр͒ки те лáдїи́,	where the Imperial ships were anchored,
39:	и́ стое́х͛ме тáмо	and we stood there,
40:	҆и чꙋ́дѧхми сѧ кáмо да пои́дем,	and we wondered, where to go.
41:	҆ꙗви сѧ̀ тàмо́ ҆еди́нь бостанџїи́	A guard emerged there,
42:	҆и ре́че:	and he said:
43:	що́ хо́дите вы̏ тꙋ́ка,	ʺWhy are you going here around?ʺ
44:	ско̀ро да поѝдете ҆ѿ т(ꙋ́)ва	ʺGo away at once!ʺ
45:	почто̀ ѿсекнꙋ́ват(вать) глáвы вáшѧ,	ʺFor they would cut off your heads!ʺ
46:	и̂ нı́и́ сѧ и́звынѧ́вахме кáко сме чл҃вцы чꙋжди́нцы ҆и про́сти,	And we apologized, that we were foreigners and simple people,
47:	҆и като́ са вáрнахме назáдь фáтиха ны тáмо що́ вáрдѧха ꙗ̂ни́-чары те	and as we returned, guarding janissaries caught us.
48:	҆и́скаха да ҆оубı́ѧть на͒,	They wanted to kill us,
49:	почто́ (҆оны) не ви́дѣли на͒ като́ проми́нахме са͒ ҆о́ниѧ наро́дь.	because they have not seen us passing with the crowd,
50:	҆и като́ са свободи́хме ѿ тàмо, по҆идохме на ҆о́бщаѧ ске́лѧ	and when we freed ourselves from there, we went to the public port,
51:	҆и прими́нахме на ҆юскꙋдар:	and we passed over to Üsküdar.
52:	҆алá бѣ́хь ҆ю́ноша тоги́ва млàд ҆и крàсен ли́цем,	But I was by then a youth, young and pretty in face,
53:	҆а тáмошныи тꙋ́рцы содомы́ти, като́ мѧ вѝдѧха,	and as the local Turkish sodomites saw me,
	то҆и́ ча͒ ме фàтиша да мѧ́ ҆испи́тват зарад харачı́ѝска хартı́а,	they caught me to interrogate me about tax documents,
54:	҆и на҆идо̀ша хартı́а мо́ѧ не добрà,	and they found out that my document was not good,
55:	҆и затвори́ша ме дале́ко ҆оу е̂днá градѝна що̀ ҆и́маше тáмо	and they locked me far away, in a garden somewhere there.
56:	тꙋ́рци сви́рѧх играѧ́ха смѣѧ́ха са, ҆оу е̂днà ҆оудáѧ що́ бѐше блѝзꙋ при пꙋ́ть,	The Turks played music, danced, laughed in a house, which was next to the road.
57:	҆алá ҆áзь са смы́слих зáщо мѧ затвори́ха менѐ тáмо,	But I understood, why they did lock me there,
58:	҆и по слꙋчáю ҆и́маше клю́чь ѿ внꙋ́тре	and, by chance, there was a key from the inside,
59:	҆и тои́ ча͒ заклю́чих ҆áзь.	and I immediately locked myself in,
60:	҆ами́ коли́ко содомы́те ҆о́ны прихо́ж͛даха	and then – how many times were those sodomites coming!
61:	҆и мо́лꙗха ми да ҆ѝмь ѿво́рѧ,	and they were begging me to open,
62:	подавáха ми ҆из прозо́рицꙋ жалти́цы.	they were offering me money through the window,
63:	҆и ҆áзь ви́дѣхь како́ва е рабо́та	and I saw, what kind of business it is.
64:	наче́нах да ви́кам:	I began to shout,
65:	и̂ ҆и́маше на срѣ́ща до́мы ҆евре́искїѧ,	and there were Jewish houses on the other side.
66:	то҆и́ ча͒ прї҆идо́ша нѧ́кои́ е̂вре́и́	Immediately, some Jews came,
67:	҆и пи́таха ме	and they asked me:
68:	зáщо вѝкашь;	ʺWhy do you shout?ʺ
69:	҆и ҆áзь сказах ҆и́мь всѧ̀ причѝна,	And I told them all the causes,
70:	҆и пои̂до́ша до дрꙋгáрѧ моегѡ́,	and they went to my comrade,
71:	҆и подадо́ша мáло пари́ на харачı́а	and they gave some money to the tax collector,
72:	҆и свободи́ша ме ѿ ҆о́ныѧ содомыти.	and they freed me from those sodomites,
73:	И собрáхме коли́ко можи́хме	and we collected as much as we could,
74:	҆и прїидо́хме на се́ло са͒ здрáвїи́,	and we returned to the village healthy,
75:	҆и като́ сложиха, ҆ѡстáна стры́и́ мо́и до́лжень грош ·400·	and as they put down (the claims?), my uncle remained indebted for 400 groschen,
76:	҆и натовáриха ги на ме́не да ги́ ҆исплáщам ҆áзь:	and they put the debt on me, so that I pay it off.
77:	но̀ като́ по҆идох ҆áзь на цр҃игрáд родни́ни мо҆и́ пове́че- разграби́ша до́мовныѧ вещи́	But as I had went to Tsarigrad, my relatives had looted the most of stuff in the house,
78:	҆и скри́ша ги,	and they hid it,
79:	҆и прїидо́ша должни́цы т стры́ѝнїи са͒ сꙋ́дїа тꙋ́рецкїи́ да преписꙋ́ват домо́вныѧ ве́щи,	and the uncleʹs debtors came with a Turkish judge to transfer the stuff in the house,
80:	҆и мáло що́ наи̂до̀ша,	and (it was) a little, what they found,
81:	҆и́ мнѣ́ша кáко с͛мь го ҆áзь скри́ль,	and they thought, that I may have had hidden it,
82:	҆и повеле́ сꙋ́дїа да мѧ́ бı́ѧть на фáланга,	and the judge orderred me to be beaten on a pillory,
83:	҆а се́лскїа кнѧ́зь не дáде ми,	but the village mayor did not give (the punishment) to me,
84:	знаѧ́ше кáко не́ с͛мь ҆áзь пови́нень,	he knew, that I was innocent.
85:	но затво́риша ме ҆оу вери́ги желѣ́зныѧ	But still, they locked me in iron chains,
86:	҆и держáша ме оу затво́рка три дни	and they held me in prison for three days,
	докле́ ҆извáдиха мáло нѧ́что їѡ́ще роднин те мо́ѝ	until my relatives took something up,
87:	҆и ѿпꙋсти́ша ме.	and they released me,
88:	҆и ѿ товá ҆извадо́ша ве́рхь ҆афоресмо́ кáко не́ с͛мь скри́ль нѧ́что,	and on the top of it they put a declaration, that I did not hide anything.
89:	҆и поѝдохь на шꙋ́мен до вл҃дка та да оу̂прàвѧм себѣ,	And I went to Shumen to the bishop to plea (?).
90:	мáло ѡ̂стàна що́ хо́чеша да побı́ють на͒ хаи́дꙋци на пꙋ̀ть.	Robbers on the way were nearly going to kill us.
91:	҆алá по пре́жде доклѐ не бѣ́ха са собрáли ҆о́ныѧ до́лжници	But earlier, before the debtors had gathered
	҆да си́ ҆и́щат сто́ка т	to collect the goods,
	понꙋ́ди́ша ме родни́ни моѝ да мѧ̀ ҆ѡженѧт,	my relatives forced me to marry,
92:	почто̀ не ҆и́маше ко́и́ да мѧ́. гле́да,	because there was nobody to watch over me.
93:	҆и ҆áзь като́ бѣ́хь ҆ѡсмь на десѧт годи́ни млáдь глꙋ́павь,	And I, as I was eighteen years old, young and dumb,
	҆и не знá҆ѧх кàко хо́че да ҆изле́зе стры́ѧ мо́и до́лжень,	I did not know, that my uncle was going to show up indebted,
	҆и кáко хо̀чꙋть да натовáрѧть всы́ѧ не́говыѧ долгь на менѐ:	and that they were going to put the whole debt on myself!
	҆и́махь ҆áзь мáло пари́	I had a little of money,
94:	҆алá кꙋ́пих до́ма стры́и́наго вь животѣ́ е̂го,	but I bought the house of my uncle in his lifetime (?),
95:	҆и като́ са ҆ѡжених разнѐсох ги́,	and as I married, I spent them,
96:	но ҆и́мах наде́жда на занáѧть мо́и́:	but I had hope in my profession.
97:	҆и по́слѣ са͒ сꙋ́дь като́ натовáриха тоѧ́ до̀лгь на ме́не	And then, as they put the debt on me by the court decision,
	҆а ҆áзь не ҆ѝмахь ҅еднá парá гото́ва сирмѧ́:	I did not have a single silver coin ready (?).
98:	҆ами́ докле́ и̂сплатѧ́ ҆о́ныѧ до́лгь каковà сїромашı́а поте́глих	Now, how much poverty did I suffer, until I paid off the debt!
99:	нꙋ́жда тѣ́сное ҆и приско́рбное живе́нїе проминꙋ́вахь,	I suffered a life of stress, lack, and sadness,
100:	коли́ко ҆оукоре́нїе терпѣ́хь ѿ же́нꙋ мою́,	how much reproaches I suffered from my wife!
101:	почто́ бе́ше мáло гордели́ва	because she was a bit proud.
102:	҆и намы́слих да ҆ѡстáвѧ ҆и до́мь ҆и же́нꙋ	And I thought of leaving the house and the wife,
	да пои́дꙋ до́лꙋ по селá та да рабо́тѧ- да сá кеверни́сам.	and go down to the villages, to work, taking care of myself.
103:	҆и чꙋ́ле нѧ́кои первѣи́шїи чорбаџı́и́ кàко хо́чꙋ да поидꙋ, позовáша ме	And as some important traders heard, that I wanted to go, they summoned me,
104:	҆и реко́ша:	and they said:
105:	не ходи́ ни́где	ʺDo not go anywhere!ʺ
106:	сѣди́	ʺStay (here)!ʺ
107:	҆оу тı́ѧ дни́ хо́че да прїи́де вл҃дк(а) нáшь,	ʺIn three days, our bishop will come.ʺ
	҆и да мꙋ́ са мо̀лим да тѧ сто́ри сщ҃е́нникь,	ʺAnd we will ask him to make a priest of you.ʺ
108:	и̂ вь тре́тїѧ де́нь прї҆иде- ҆архїереѧ,	And the bishop came on the third day,
109:	҆и помо́лиха сѧ,	and they asked him (lit. made a prayer),
110:	҆и ҆о́нь то́и ча͒ ҆изво́ли да мꙗ хїротони́са вь нед҃лю	and then he decided to appoint (lit. lay hands on) me on Sunday,
111:	и подáдоха мꙋ седмь десѧт грош,	and they gave him 70 groschen.
112:	҆алá бе́ше ҆оу срѣ́да то̀ ҆исплáтенїе,	But the payment was due on Wednesday,
113:	҆и ҆áзь сѧ готвѧх за в͛ нед҃лѧ потре́бнаѧ,	and (as) I was preparing myself for the Sunday service,
114:	вь пе́токь вечер прїи́де ҆ѵ́коно̀мꙋ	on the Friday evening, the bishopʹs steward came,
115:	҆и прине́се ми пари́ те	and he brought me (back) the money,
116:	҆и рече́:	and he said:
117:	да знаиш кàко не ҆ѝма да тѧ́ ҆оучи́ни влд҃ка сщ҃е́нникь	ʺYou should know, that the bishop will not make a priest of you,ʺ
118:	почто̀ дрꙋ́гїи́ подáде сто́ и ҆пѧ́т͛ десѧт грош	ʺbecause another one gave 150 groschen.ʺ
119:	тогѡ̀ хо́че да хїротони́са.	ʺHe will appoint that one a priest.ʺ
120:	҆ами како́ва ли ско́рбь ҆и сожале́нїе мѧ ҆ѡб͛зе́,	Now, how much sadness and regret took over me!
	като́ сѧ ҆исповѣ́дахь на дꙋхо́вник(ꙋ)	as I confessed to a priest,
	҆и ҆оузе́хь марторı́а,	and I took the testimony (?),
	҆и зго́тових сѧ все́ потре́бнаѧ:	and I prepared myself (for Sunday) service!
121:	҆ами́ комꙋ́ да скáжа тоѧ ско̀рбь мою̀;	So, to whom should I tell of my sadness?
122:	поте́кох до ҆о̀ныѧ чл҃вци що сà бѣхà мо́лили ҆и пари т дàли,	I ran to those people, who asked for me and gave the money,
123:	҆и ҆о́ны по҆идоха	and they went,
124:	҆и дадо̀ша ї҆ѡще три десѧт грош,	and they gave thirty groschen more.
125:	҆и рꙋкоположи́ ме вь лѣто ·1762· септем ·а·,	And (the bishop) appointed me a priest in year 1762, on the 1st of September.
126:	҆алà като̀ знаѧх мáло да четꙋ́, дрꙋ́гїи́ сщ҃е́нницы ненави́дѣ(ха) ме	But as I knew a bit to read, other priests hated me,
127:	почто̀ ҆о́ны вси́ на то́ вре́ме (бѣ́ха) орáчи,	because they were all but plowers,
128:	҆и ѿ безꙋ́мнаѧ млàдость моѧ̀	and, because of my mindless youth,
	не хо́чахь да ҆и́мь сѧ покорѧ́вам,	I did not want to submit to them,
	като́ бѣ́ха тàко про́сти ҆и не ҆оучѐны,	as they were so simple and uneducated.
129:	҆а ҆о́ны мѧ навáждаха на ҆архїереı́а,	But they were driving the bishop against me,
130:	҆и коли́ко мѧ крáты ҆аргосвá,	and how many times he put an interdict on me!
131:	҆и ненави́дѣше мѧ:	and he hated me.
132:	҆и ҆и́маше ҆архїере́и́ протосѵ́ггелѧ	And the bishop had a chancellor,
	гре́ка не ҆оуче́ннаго не кни́жнаго,	a Greek, uneducated and illiterate.
133:	҆о́нь мѧ̀ мно́го ненави́дѣше.	He hated me a lot.
134:	поне́же то̀ ҆е́сть ве́щь приро́дна:	For it is a natural thing:
135:	оу̂че́нь чл҃вкь ҆оуче́ннаго лю̀би:	an educated man loves educated ones,
136:	҆и про́сть про́стаго,	and a simple man (loves) a simple one,
137:	҆и пїàнь пїàннаго.	and a drunkard a drunken one.
138:	҆и тàкѡ неспоко́ино нѧ́колико годѝни проми́нꙋвахь живе́нїе мое́.	And thus, without peace, I went through my life for a couple of years.
139:	Вь лѣто ·1768· наче́на сá вои̂скá батáлїа тꙋ́рчина са͒ моско́вица,	In the year 1768, a war began between the Turkey and Muscovy.
140:	҆ами́ какво́ да скáжим:	Now, what to say?
141:	като́ привле́коха ҆о́ныѧ лю́тыи́ ҆и сверѣпїи́ ҆агáрене,	As they those fierce and savage Hagarenes marched in,
	какво́ ли ѕло́ не сто́риха по хр͒тїаны,	what evil did they not do to Christians?
142:	що ҆и́мь на ҆оꙋ́мь не прїи́де товá не сторӥха,	What would they not do, when it came on their mind?
143:	коли́ко чл҃вцы ҆избѝша.	How many people they killed?
144:	҆а нáшеи сѐло като́ е на четы́ри пꙋ́тѧ-	But as our village is on four roads,
	҆и до̀мь мои́ бе́ше весм́а дале́чь ҆ѿ цр҃кви,	my house was quite far away from the church,
145:	҆а по ҆обычàю нáшемꙋ	and, according to our custom,
	потре́бно бе́ше да сá наи́да ҆оу цр҃ква ҆и на вече́рнѧ ҆и на ҆оꙋ́трен͛ѧ †	it was necessary for me to be found in the church on both evening and morning service
	(на всѧкїи день)	every day.
146:	колико ли ҆оꙋ́лицы ҆оубиколѧх	How many times did I go around
	докле́ пои́да ҆оу цр҃ква-	until I came to the church,
	҆и да си прїи́дꙋ пáки ҆оу до́мь,	and then again home!
147:	коли́ко мѧ крáты фáтиха ҆и бı́ха мѧ	How many times they caught and beaten me!
148:	҆и глáво мѧ проби́ша,	And they crushed my head,
149:	҆и хо̀чѧша да мѐ оу̂бı́ѧт,	and they were going to kill me,
150:	҆алá б҃гь мѧ сохранѝ.	but God spared me.
151:	по́сле наче́наха да минꙋ́ват пашı̀ѝ,	Then, the pashas started to pass,
152:	҆и полáгаха ме да пи́ша тескери́ да подáвам за конáци	and they required me to write them permits for (using) houses.
	като́ пи́шах бо́рзѡ,	as I was writing fast.
153:	҆а ҆о́ны не ҆аре́с͛ваха конáцы те сво́и́,	But they did not like their houses,
154:	҆и дохо́ждаха назáдь,	and they were coming back.
155:	коли́ко крáты пищо́ли из͛важдáха на ме́не да мѧ́ ҆оубı̀ѧть:	How many times they were drawing their pistols to kill me!
156:	веднош ҆един са͒ ко́пїе фарли́ на ме́не	Once, one of them threw a javelin on me,
157:	҆алà нѐ са слꙋчи́ дá мѧ́ ҆оудáри.	but it did not happen to hit me.
158:	҆и нáи по́слѣ поми́на прехвàлныи́ џезá҆ерли́ хасан пашá	And, finally, the most glorious Cezayirli Hasan Pasha passed.
159:	ѿхо́ждаше на рꙋ́счꙋ́кь.	He was going to Rusčuk.
160:	҆и ҆азь по ҆ѡбычáю раздавах тескери́ за конáцы,	And I was, as usually, giving away the permits for houses,
161:	҆еди́нь̀ мѧ́ фáти за брáдꙋ	(and) one of them seized me by the beard,

163:	като́ са намѣ́стиша вси́, позовá пáша четы́ри стáрцы при себѣ́.	When all settled in, the pasha summoned for elders,
164:	и́ е̂дин ѿ них бѣ̀хь ҆áзь:	and one of them was me.
165:	пр҅ии́де ҆един ча҆ꙋшь що́ сѣде́ше всѧ́коги на се́ло	(Then) came the sergeant (?), who was always in the village,
166:	проводим бе́ше ѿ вези́рѧ зáрад да защитѧ́ва село́ то ѿ во҆искá та,	he had been sent by the (Grand) Vizier to protect the village from the army,
167:	҆и по҆идо́хме са͒ негѡ́ до пашо́ваѧ порта,	and we went together with him to the pashaʹs porte.

174:	҆а ҆азь побѣ́гнах камто̀ пашо́ва конáкь бли́зꙋ,	However, I ran to the vicinity of pashaʹs headquarters,
175:	҆а не́ са смислих кáко пашá та сѣди́ горѣ́ на кїо́шка	and I did not think that the pasha is sitting there upstairs in the house,
176:	хо̀че да мѧ́ ви́ди:	(that) he will see me,
177:	҆и като́ мѧ ви́ди, вѝкна	and as he saw me, he shouted:
178:	що́ бѣ́гаш брѐ,	ʺWhy are you running, dude?!ʺ
179:	фате́ти го	ʺSeize him!ʺ
180:	҆и принесе́те го вáмо:	ʺAnd bring him here!ʺ
181:	҆и то́ѝ ча͒ мѧ фатиха четво́рица,	And then four of them caught me,
182:	҆и заве́доха ме при пашá та,	and they brought me to the pasha.
183:	҆алá са͒ како́виѝ стрàхь:	But with what fear!
184:	҆и попи́та ме	And he asked me:
185:	защо́ бѣгашь бре́	ʺWhy do you run, dude?ʺ
186:	ко́и тѧ го́ни;	ʺWho is chasing you?ʺ

221:	наче́нах да хо̀дѧ по нѐговое оу̂гождѐнїе по гре́ческое ѡ̂бычáи	I began to go around for his (Devilʹs) pleasure, by the Greek customs,
	да глꙋбѧ́вам чл҃вцы те,	imposing fines on the people.

229:	стáна ҆еднà крамолà междꙋ̀ ҆аги́ те на ҆ѡсмáнь пазар,	(and) there was a strife among the aghas in Osman Pazar,
	ко́и́ да бꙋ́де а̂ꙗ́̂нин,	who would become the ayan.
230:	сꙋлтáнꙋ верби́шкїи́ положи́ е̂дногѡ̀ ҆а҆ꙗ́нина	The Sultan of Verbitsa appointed one ayan,
231:	҆а велїѧ́ то гѡ не́ ще,	but the vali did not want him,
232:	҆и приве́доха бекир пашá ѿ сили́стра да ги́ ҆оупрáви.	and they brought Bekir Pasha from Silistra to bring order between them.
233:	като̀ прїи́де ҆о́нь ҆оуби́ сꙋлтáнскаго ҆а҆ꙗ́нѝна,	As he came, he killed the sultanʹs ayan.
234:	пои́дохме ҆и нı̀ѝ де́сѧть члв҃цы ѿ нàшеи́ се́ло,	Also ten of us from our village went,
235:	҆и като́ са оу̂токми́ха фарли́ха на се́ло нашеи́ десѧть кесı̀ѝ,	and as they strengthened themselves, they put on our village ten kese (to pay)

238:	҆алà ҆и́мь ҆оучи́ни паша т сро́кь за три́- дни́ да принесꙋ́ть пари те,	but the pasha gave them three days to bring the money.
239:	сѣдѧ̀хми нı̀и́ тàмо затво́р́ини,	We sat there locked,
240:	ми́наха са три́ ҆и четы́ри дни́	three-four days passed,
241:	не дохо́ждат.	they are not coming.
242:	чꙋ́хме кáко ѿ҆ишлѐ на верби́ца да сá плачат ѿ пашá та на сꙋлтáнꙋ,	We heard, that they went to Verbitsa to complain to the Sultan,
243:	начѐнаха мои́ дрꙋжи́на ҆оу затво́рка та, да плáчат са͒ сле́зы,	(and) my comrades in the prison began to weep with tears:
244:	҆áхь сїромáсы посѣ́ча ни пашà та,	ʺOh, poor ones, the pasha will kill us!ʺ
245:	нѐ са поми́на- ҆един ча͒	Not one hour passed,
246:	прїи́де паш́овь чл҃вкь	a pashaʹs man came,
247:	҆и ре́че:	and he said:
248:	прїиди́ папа͒	ʺCome, pop,ʺ
249:	зовет тѧ пашá та	ʺthe pasha is calling you.ʺ
250:	҆ами са͒ какво́ ли срд҃це поӥдох до пáша т,	Now, with what kind of mood (lit. heart) I went to the pasha!
251:	мо́лѧх сѧ тàино б҃гꙋ да мѝ простѝ согрѣше́нїе моѐ	I secretly prayed to God to forgive me my sin,
252:	почто̀ бѣ́хь ѿчаѧ̀ль себѣ́.	because I became desperate.
253:	като́ прїи̂дох при паша т рече:	As I came to the pasha, he said:
254:	гдѐ ваши т чл҃вцы брѐ да принесꙋ́ть пари́;	ʺWhere (are) your people, dude, to bring the money?ʺ
255:	҆и ҆áзь мꙋ ре́кохь:	And I said to him:
256:	҆ефен͛ди три́ дни́ ҆ѐсть како́ са по҆ишле́,	ʺSir, it is three days as they went.ʺ
257:	когдá да соберꙋ̀ть то́лкова пари́ ҆и да гѝ принесꙋ́ть.	ʺWhen (would they have time) to collect so much money and bring them?ʺ
258:	҆а ҆о̀нь ми ѿгово́ри:	But he answered me:
259:	гїѧвꙋ́рь, ҆иди́ ско̀ро	ʺMake haste, infidel,ʺ
260:	҆и пи́ши, да ги́ не собѝрать ѿ раѧ́ та сеги́,	ʺand write, not to collect them from the rayah now,ʺ
	҆ами́ да ги́ ҆оузе́мать ѿ нѧ́когѡ торго́вца,	ʺbut to take them from a merchant,ʺ
261:	почто́ до трѝ дни́ ҆ı҆ѡ́ще ҆ако̀ не прїѝдꙋть,	ʺfor if they will not come in three days,ʺ
	҆и ва͒ посѣ́чамь,	ʺI will kill you,ʺ
262:	҆и парѝ те двà кàта ҆оузе́мам ѿ нѝхь,	ʺand I will take twice as much from them.ʺ
263:	҅и ҆áзь писах товá	And I wrote that down,
264:	҆и прати́хме чл҃вкь,	and we sent a man.
265:	като́ са мѝнаха три́ ҆о́ны не дохо́ждат,	As three (days) passed, they are not coming!
266:	҆и нı́и́ глѐдахме като́ ҆о́вцы на заколе́нїе.	and we watched as sheep (ready) for slaughter.
267:	на тре́тїа де́нь пáкь мѧ позовá паша т:	On the third day, the pasha summoned me again.
268:	тогѝва като́ ѿхо́ждах крáи́но ѿчаѧ̀хь себѣ́ си,	As I went then, I was totally desperate,
269:	҆и ѿ страх не мо́жах на паша т да ѿгово́рѧ що ми́ дꙋ́маше:	and from the fear I could not answer the pasha, what he said to me.
270:	катѡ́ пои́дох до не́го видѣ́ мѧ кáко не мо̀га да ѿгово́рѧм,	As I came to him, he saw that I cannot answer him,
271:	са͒ кро́тость ми рѐче:	(and) he said to me calmly:
272:	не прїидо́ша ли вàшеи́ чл҃вцы;	ʺYour men did not come?ʺ
273:	҆и ҆áзь рекох:	And I said:
274:	е̂фе́нди вы̏ е́сте бл҃го҆оутробне	ʺSir, you are merciful,ʺ
275:	потерпи́ мáло какво̀ да бꙋ́де	ʺwait a little for what happens,ʺ
276:	тıе до вече́ра прихо̀ждат,	ʺthey are coming until the evening.ʺ
277:	҆а ҆о̀нь не хо́чеше да потерпи́	But he did not want to wait,
278:	҆амѝ прати́ тоѧ̀ ча͒ мꙋбашир,	so he sent his bailiff,
279:	҆и оу̂зе ıѡ̂ще хїлѧ́да гро̀ша.	and he took a thousand groschen more.
280:	҆ами́ що́ потеглих ҆оу затво́рка т,	Now, what I suffered in that prison!
281:	҆и́мамь недꙋ́гь почечꙋ́иный сиреч маѧ̀си́ль	I have a flowing (?) illness, that is, haemorrhoids.
282:	тоги́ва ѿ проти́вное ҆ꙗ́стїе бе́ше мѧ хвáтиль,	It had caught me from the bad food,
283:	хо́чем да ѝзле́зим по во́нь	I want to go out,
284:	҆а ҆о̀ны ме не пꙋ́щат	but they are not letting me:
285:	ψꙋ́ваха мѧ,	they were cursing me,
286:	тá ѿ стрáхь ҆и ѿ недꙋ́жнаѧ тѣснотá	and then from fear and disease,
	оу̂падо́ша вси́ влáсы глáвы моеи.	all the hair of my head fell.
287:	по товá послѣ́ не сѣдѧх ми́рен	Afterwards I did not sit idly,
288:	҆ами́ кꙋпих двѐ хи́жи бли́зꙋ при це́рква т	but I bought two houses next to the church,
289:	҆и напрáвих ги ҆из͛ но́ва,	and I reconstructed them,
290:	҆и що̀ ҆и́махь пари́ все́ ги разне́сохь.	and all the money I had I spent.
291:	҆и като́ са поми́на мáло разболѧ́х сѧ азь,	And after a short time I fell ill,
292:	҆алá не бо́лесть да лежá на посте́лѧ,	but not (from) an illness, (because of which I would have) to lie on a bed,
293:	҆амѝ мѧ фáти ҆еднà тѣснотá серде́чнаѧ,	but some kind of heart distress caught me,
294:	҆и не мо́жах да сѣдѧ́ на е̂дно̀ мѣ́сто	and I could not sit on one place,
	дакле́ да прибро́и́ чл҃вкь де́сѧть чѝсла,	until one counts to ten,
295:	҆ами́ хо̀дѧх като̀ лꙋ́дь по крàи́ во̀ды те	so I walked as a madman along the rivers,
296:	҆и плáчахь,	and I cried.
297:	мнѣ́ше ми са како̀ хо́че да ҆изско́чи срд҃цѐ мое́ ѿ ҆оустá моѧ́,	I thought my heart was going to jump out of my mouth,
298:	҆оу тáковаѧ тѣснотá бѣ́хь,	such a distress I had.

302:	҆ами́ нѧ́кои́ бабы баѧ̀ха ми	so some old women did magic for me,
303:	҆и цѣлѧ́хꙋ ме,	and they tried to heal me,
304:	҆алá ни́коѧ по́лза,	but (for) no avail.
305:	ходих да трáжа до́кторы по сливин по ҆ꙗ́мболь,	I went to seek doctors in Sliven and Yambol,
306:	нáи́ послѣ́ пойдох ҆и на цр҃игрáдь,	finally, I went also to Tsarigrad.
307:	то̀лкова пари́ разне́сохь	I spent so much money!
308:	задолжнѧ́хь не мáло.	I was in debt not a little.
309:	По товá наче́на тꙋ́рчина вои̂скá батáлїа ҆и са͒ моско́вица ҆и са͒ нѐмица,	Afterwards, Turks began a war with Muscovy and Germans (Austria),
310:	҆и зимꙋ́ваше ҆ıсꙋфь пашá везир на рꙋ́счꙋкь,	an Yusuf Pasha, the Vizier, spent winter in Rusčuk,
311:	҆а сы́нь мо́и́ пои́де ҅оу влáшко	and my son went to Wallachia,

324:	хо́чѧша да мѧ́ затво́рѧт.	they wanted (were going?) to put me in prison,
325:	҆и като́ ҆оуздрáвѧх мáло	and as I got healed a bit,
	зарад ҆о̀ное баѧ́нїе запрѣти́ мѧ дꙋхо́вникꙋ три́ годи́ни да не слꙋ́жа лїтꙋргı̀а,	because of that magic the priest (?) forbade me to serve a liturgy for three years,
326:	҆и като́ са мѝнаха три́ годи́ни подàде ми дꙋхо́вникꙋ позволе(н)	and as the three years passed, the priest gave me an admission,
327:	҆алà деспо̀ти мѧ не дáваше,	but the lord (bishop) was not giving me one.

330:	дáи́ ми рѐче тı́ѧ пари́ да ти́ подáмь позволе́нїе да слꙋ́жиш лїтꙋ́ргı̀а,	He said: ʺGive me that money, so that I permit you to serve liturgy,ʺ
331:	да мѧ̀ держѐ ҆ı҆ѡ́ще три́ годи́ни без лїтꙋргı̀а.	(otherwise) he would hold me three more years without (the right to serve) liturgy.
332:	҆амѝ що̀ потѐглих ѿ поп҃вы те,	Well, but what did I suffer from the priests!
333:	коли́ко мѧ поношáваха ҆и ҆оукорѧ́ваха ме,	How much did they complain and slander me,
334:	҆и не дàваха ми досто̀҆инаѧ чàсть,	and they did not give me my due,
335:	҆и коги́ ме дáѧше дꙋ́маха ми:	and when they were giving, they said:
336:	е̂то̀ кáто нѧ́кои́ слѣ́пець тѧ хрàниме,	ʺSee, we feed you as some kind of blind man,ʺ

358:	тı́ѧ са ҆ѡ́вцы продáдоха ҅оу поп҃ваѧ хи́жа	ʺThe sheep were sold in the house of the priest,ʺ

360:	ко́и́ гї и́ продàль, ко́и́ гї и́ кꙋпи́ль ҆о́нь знáи́,	ʺWhoever sold them, whoever bought them – he knows!ʺ

362:	и̂ позовàша ме тáмо,	And they summoned me there,
363:	҆и предадо́ша ме на ҆о̀ныѝ мꙋчители бостанџı̀҆и,	and they gave me over to those tormentors-Gardeners,
364:	҆и завед́оша на͒ тро҃ца до бостанџи́ баши́ на сли́вин,	and they brought us three to the Chief Gardener in Sliven,
365:	и ҆о́нь стàнваше да пои́де камто́ казанли́кь,	and he was just preparing himself to move to Kazanlăk,
366:	҆и предàде на͒ на оу̂ртà чаꙋ́шꙋ,	and he gave us over to the regimental sergeant,

368:	҆и наче́наха- да пои́дꙋть по о̂н́ое по́ле до ко́ритен	and they began to march through that field to Koriten,

372:	҆и понꙋ́диша ме пѣ́шы да хо́дим,	and they forced me to go on foot,
373:	ходи́хме кол́ко двà ч́аса,	we walked for about two hours
374:	҅и ѿ пе́кь запрѣ́хме,	and from the heat we were exhausted,
375:	почто̀ ҆о́ны на ко́ны,	because they (went) on horse
376:	҆а нı́и́ пѣ́шы,	and we on foot.
377:	кáко возмо́жно ҆е́сть рáвно да хо́диме:	How could we possibly walk evenly?
378:	ха҃џ влáсїа като̀ бе́ше ҅по стар пáдна на землѧ́ та	Xadži Vlasi, as he was older, fell to the ground,
	баѧлди́са,	unconscious from the heat,
379:	прати́ ҆оуртá ча҆ꙋ́шꙋ да пи́та бостанџи́ башѝ	the regimental sergeant sent to ask the Chief Gardener,
	почто́ бе́ше бли́зкꙋ- слѣ́дь на͒	because he was in the vicinity to us,
	да всадѝ на͒ на ко̀не те нàши,	to put us on our horses,
380:	҆а ҆о́нь рекль:	but he said:
381:	не и́̂ма ли топꙋ́сь да бı́и́ да хо̀дѧт,	ʺDoes he not have a mace to beat (them) to walk?ʺ
382:	҆ако ли́ не мо̀гат да хо́дѧт да ҆и́мь ѿсѣ́че глáвы и̂ да ги́ ѡ̂стáви,	(And he said) if they cannot walk, may he cut their heads and leave them.
383:	҆и като́ чꙋ́хме товá не ѡ̂стана оу̂ на͒ срд҃це,	As we heard that, the heart did not remain in ourselves,
384:	чꙋ̀дѧхми сѧ какво̀ да сто́рим	we wondered what to do,

386:	҆и ҆ѡбѣщáхме на тогѡ́ чаꙋ̀ша трѝ десѧт грош,	and we offered that Messenger thirty groschen,
387:	поне́же тꙋрцы на пари́ лѐсно са приклонѧ́ват,	because Turks are easily inclined by money,
388:	и́ като́ по ҅оудалечѝхме мáло	and as we got further a bit,
	вьсад(их) на ко́ны нáши,	we mounted our horses
389:	҆и пои̂до̀хме до ко́ритен село,	and we went to the village of Koriten.
390:	҆и тамо конди́сáша.	and there they stopped,
391:	҅и поми́на са ко́лко е̂дин ча͒	and about one hour passed,
392:	приведо́ша на͒ при бостанџи́ баши́:	they brought us to the Chief Gardener,
393:	҆и пе́рво попи́та мене́:	and he first asked me:
394:	ко́и́ продáдá тı́ѧ о́̂вцы;	ʺWho sold those sheep?ʺ
395:	и ҆á̂зь рекох,	And I said:
396:	҆ислàмь аги́,	ʺIslam agha (sold them), and Xadži Vlasi took them,ʺ

398:	҆ами́ коли́ко о́̂вцы продáде,	(He said:) ʺSo, how many sheep did he sell?ʺ

410:	сохрани́ бж҃е бо̀станџı̀и́ско̆е бїе́нїе не мл͒ти́вное.	O God, remember the Gardenersʹ merciless beating!
411:	бı̀ѧха ме	They were beating me,
412:	҆и дꙋ́маха ми:	and they were saying to me:
413:	скажи́ ко̀лко ҆о́вцы продáде;	ʺTell us, how many sheep you sold!ʺ
414:	҆и́ ҆áзь като́ не мо̀жах ве́че да терпѣ́	And, as I could not suffer anymore,
	присѣ́че ми сѧ срд҃це ѿ бо́лесть:	my heart stopped (?) because of pain,

430:	҆и положи́ша на͒ ҆оу желѣ́зный вери́ги при дрꙋгїи́ затво́рници	and they put us into iron chains to other prisoners,
	що̀ ҅и́маше до два десѧт ҆и пѧ̀ть тꙋрцы, хр͒тїáны, цыгáни.	(of) which they had about twenty-five Turks, Christians, (and) Gypsies,
	҆алà пове́че а̂рнаꙋ́ты що бѣ́ха побѣ́гнали ѿ оу̂рдı̀а та	but mostly Arnauts, who had ran from the army,
	като ѧ̀ развáли моско̀вица на мачи́нь.	when it was broken by the Muscovites in Mačin.
431:	҆и ха҃џ влáсїа би́ха	They were beating also Xadži Vlasi,

433:	҆и на всѧ͛кїа де́нь наби́ваше на ко́лы ѿ ҆о̀ныѧ ҆арнаꙋ́ты пред о́чи нàши:	and on every day they were staking those Arnauts in front of our eyes,

435:	҆и оу̂страшавáха на͒, кáко хо́четь ҆и на͒ на ко́лы да набı̀ѧть.	and they were scaring us, that they are going to stake us too.
436:	҆и послѣ́ положѝхме ҆о̀ныи́ ҆агашáри	And then, we asked (lit. placed ?) those aghas,
437:	и̂ ҆измо́лиха на͒ слѣ́дь пѧ́ть дни́,	and they begged us out after five days,
438:	҆и ѿдàдохме глꙋбá хїлѧ́да ҅и пет͛ сто́тин грош.	and we left a fine of 1500 groschen.
439:	ѿпꙋ̀сти на͒	He set us free,
440:	҆алà ҆ѡвче́ре те не ѿпꙋ́сти,	but he did not free the shepherds,
441:	҆и речѐ	and he said:
442:	коги́ по҆ида на ҆адрїано́поле тоги́ва ги ѿпꙋ̀щамь:	ʺFirst when Iʹll go to Adrianople, then Iʹm freeing them!ʺ
443:	а̂лà докле́ да поѝде на а̂ндрїанопо̀ли ҆о́нь прїи́де мꙋ манзилı́а,	But until he came to Adrianople, he received a note of discharge (?),

450:	но̀ кáто чꙋ́хь побѣ́гнах оу̂ го̀рꙋ,	but as I heard about it, I fled into forest (mountains?),
451:	҆и сѣдѧх тáмо двà- дни́	and I sat there for two days,
	докле́ си пои́де пашá та.	until the pasha went away.
452:	и сѣдѧ̀ха ҆о́ныи́ ҆овчáре тàмо ҅оу затво́рка три́ мц͒ы:	And those shepherds sat there in prison for three months.
453:	по́слѣ ҆извáди касàпь бáши ферман ѿ вези́ра,	Afterwards, the Chief Butcher brought a firman-command from the Vizier,
454:	҆и ҆извàди ҆ѡвчере те,	and he brought out the shepherds,
455:	҆и ҆ѡвцѐ ти ҆оузе ѿ сꙋлтáнꙋ,	and he took the sheep from the sultan,
456:	҆и ѿ глꙋ́ба ҆онаѧ ҆оузѐ полови́на ѿ бостан͛џи баши́ манзи́лїнꙋ.	and he took a half of the fine from the discharged (?) Chief Gardener,
	сиреч ·750· грош,	that is 750 groschen.
457:	то́и́ бостанџи́ бáши бешѐ ѿ карнобáть	That Chief Gardener was from Karnobat,
458:	сербе́зь ҆ѡꙋлꙋ́ на ҅име мехмет.	Serbezoglu Mehmet by name.

	коли́ко краты́ ҆излазих на вези́рскїа диван зарад се́лскаѧ по́мощь.	so many times I went to the Vizierʹs office to help the village,
	двá десѧт годи́ни ҆оучих дѣцá та им кни́жное ҆оуче́нїе,	twenty years I taught their children to read and write,
	҆и на всѧ́каѧ нед҃лѧ, ҆и на всѧ́кїи́ празд҃никь сказꙋ̀вах пооуче́ние,	and on every Sunday and every feast I read a homily,
	҆и то́лкова трꙋ̀дь що́ под҃҆ѧ̀хь,	and (it was) so much work, what I did,
	҆и то́лкова добро́ що̀ и́̂мь сто́рих ҆и тѣле́сно ҆и дꙋше́вно,	and (it was) so much good, what I did them, both for body and soul,
	҆а наѝ по́сле мѧ предáдоха на бостанџ́и баши́ да мѧ́ оу̂бı́й.	and still, in the end, they gave me over to the Chief Gardener to kill me,

463:	ѿ тáѧ теготá востáнах	Because of all this sorrow, I stood up,
464:	҆и́ пои̂дохь на ҆áхїиолскаѧ ҆епархı́а,	and I went to Eparchy of Anchialos,
465:	҅и ҅о́нь ме прїѧ̀ са͒ рàдость,	and (the bishop) received me with joy,
466:	҆и дáде ми е̂норı́а два на десѧт се́ла са͒ карнобáть ве́дно.	and he gave me a parish of twelve villages together with Karnobat.

472:	҆и ѿ мàрта до ст҃áѧ тро̀и́ца сѣдѧх ми́рно:	and from March to Holy Trinity, I sat peacefully.
473:	тоги́ва на то́и́ де́нь прїи́де ферман пàкь бостанџи́ баши́ да бꙋ́де,	Then, on that day, a firman came (for Serbezoglu), to become the Chief Gardener again,

480:	и̂ ҅имаше е̂дин сꙋ́лтáнь го́стѧнин оу̂ до̀мь ҆егѡ́,	and he had one sultan as a guest in his house,

	като̀ бѐше панаир	as there was a market,
498:	тà бѣ́ха тáмо собрàни.	and so they were assembled there.
499:	мꙋ̀жїе припàднаха на ҆едно́го не́говаго любе́знаго ч҃лка	The men went to his favorite man,
500:	и́ же́ны припàднаха на мáтер ҆егѡ́:	and the women went to his mother,
501:	҆и помо́ли сѧ матер ҆егѡ́ да мѧ́ хари́жи менѐ нѐи́,	and his mother asked him for mercy for me,
	зарад да не ѡ̂скорбѧ̀ва хр͒тїàны т са͒ мое́ оу̂бїе́нїе:	so that he would not upset the Christians by killing me,
502:	҆и са͒ голѧ́мое моле́нїе свободи́ша ме ѿ ҆о́наѧ лю̀таѧ сме́рть.	and with a great asking, they freed me from that terrible death.

	то̀и́ де́нь наби́ на коль е̂дного́ оу̂рꙋ̀ка нá мѣ́сто мени́,	on that day he staked one Yoruk instead of me,

525:	҆и бı́л го мно́гѡ	and he was beating him,
526:	҆и оу̂глꙋби́ль го:	and he fined him.
527:	҆и à̂зь тогѝва оꙋ́боѧ̀х се	And then I became afraid,
528:	҆и прїи́дох вь ҅оусꙋмне́нїе голѧ́мое.	and I was worried a lot.
529:	слѣ́ть товá по́идох на ҆едно се́ло що сà нарѝча ко́стень,	Afterwards, I went to a village called Kosten,
	тáмо то́кмо ҆и́ма цр҃ква оу̂ все карнобáтскїи кадили́кь,	(as) there is the only church in all of the qadilik of Karnobat,

531:	та ме́ позовá зарад е̂днá бо́рзаѧ рабо̀та,	and he called me for one short affair,
532:	и́ á̂зь слѣ́дь ҆ѡбѣ́да востáнах	and I set off after the lunch,
533:	҆и ѿхо́ждахме са͒ тогѡ́ Мило́ша вь пꙋ́ть наш,	and we, together with that Miloš, went our way,
534:	гле́даме нá едном мѣ́сто мàло ѿ пꙋ́тю дале́чко	now, we look at one place a bit away from our way,
535:	мꙋ́жїе ҆и жены́ жнꙋ́ть ни́ва,	men and women are harvesting a field,
536:	҆и дво́йца тꙋрци сѣдѧ́ть при ни́хь на ко́нѣ,	and two Turks sit next to them on horses,
537:	҆и́ като́ ҆минꙋ́вахме оу̂ пꙋ̀ть	and as we passed on the way,
	позовáха ны да пои́дем при них,	they called us, to come to them,
538:	҆и като̀ приближи́хме ре́че Ми́лош	and as we came closer, Miloš said:
539:	сꙋлтáнꙋ е́̂сть,	ʺThat is the sultan!ʺ
540:	҆и ҆áзь поте́кох да мꙋ́ целꙋ́на скꙋ̀тꙋ:	And I hurried to kiss his robe,
541:	҆а ҆о̀нь мѧ попи́та,	but he asked me:
542:	ты̀ ли си на тı̀ѧ сел̀а по́пь;	ʺAre you the priest of these villages?ʺ
543:	и́ ҆азь ѿговорих:	And I said:
544:	҆áзь ҆е́смь рàбь вàшь.	ʺI am your servant.ʺ
545:	҆а ҅о́нь ме реч́е:	And he said:
546:	ты́ ли вѣнчá кованџıюваѧ дще́рѧ на карнобат;	ʺHave you wed the Kovanciʹs daughter from Karnobat?ʺ
547:	ѿговорих:	I answered:
548:	҅áзь ѐ̂смь чл҃вкь чꙋ́ждинець	ʺI am a foreigner,ʺ
549:	на ско́ро прїѝдох	ʺI came a short time ago,ʺ
550:	и́ не знáѧ ко҅ѧ́ есть кованџı̀юваѧ дще́рѧ.	ʺand I know not, who is Kovanciʹs daughter.ʺ
551:	҆а ҆о́нь то̀и ча͒ вди́гна пꙋ́шка своѧ́	But in that moment he raised his rifle,
552:	҆и ҅оудари́ мѧ са͒ тепеџи́кꙋ двá пꙋ́ти по плѧ́-щима мои́ма,	and he hit me with the stock twice on my shoulders.
553:	по̀слѣ ҆извàди пищо̀ль на мене,	Then he took a pistol against me,
554:	҆а á̂зь като̀ бѧх бли́зꙋ- до него фáтих мꙋ пищо̀лꙋ.	but as I was close to him, I caught the pistol.
555:	҆а ҆о̀нь приви́ка на чл҃вка своегѡ̀	But he called his man:
556:	скор̀о дáѝ вь́же да оу̂бѣ́сѧ тогѡ́ пезве́нка:	ʺMake haste to give me a rope to hang this bastard!ʺ
557:	҆и т҅ои́ пои́де	And he went,
558:	҆и оу̂зе́ ѿ моѧ́ ќонь ҆юлáрѧ що̀ бе́ше двà кáта,	and he took the reins from my horse, which was double (?),
559:	҆и фарли́ го на шı́ѧ моѧ́,	and he put it on my neck,
560:	҆и ҆имаше тàмо е̂днá вербá дрѣ́во,	and there was a willow,
561:	и́ то̀и́ ча͒ вьзле́зе ҅о́нь на вербà та,	and in that moment he climbed on the willow,
562:	҆и те́глѧше мѧ са͒ ю̂лáрѧ на го́рѣ,	and he was pulling me up with the reins,
563:	҆алá рꙋ́цѣ мо́и́ като́ не бѣ̀ха све́рзани держах ҆юлáрю	but, as my hands were not bound, I held the reins,
564:	҆и те́г͛лѧхь го на до́лꙋ,	and I was pulling him down,
565:	҆и мо́лѧхь сѧ на сꙋлтáнꙋ да мѧ́ пощади́,	and I begged the sultan to spare me,
566:	҆а ҅онь сѣдѧ́ше на ко̀нѧ своегѡ́,	but he sat on his horse,
567:	ви́кна на мило̀ша са͒ голѧ́мь гнѣ́вь	he shouted to Miloš with great anger,
568:	҆и реч́е:	and he said:
569:	прїиди́ ҆и в͛ди́гни тогѡ̀ пезве́нка бре́:	ʺCome and raise that bastard, dude!ʺ
570:	и́ милош наче́на да мꙋ̀ са мо́ли зарад мене́:	And Miloš began to ask for mercy for me,
571:	҆алá като́ гѡ ҅оудáри са͒ пꙋ̀шечныи тепеџı̀кꙋ по лице́	but as he (then) hit him with the rifle stock in the face,
	то разскь̀са мꙋ чо̀лес та:	it broke him the jaw.
572:	тоги́ва сꙋлтáно са ѡ́бь́рна камто́ вербà та лицѐ свое́	Then the sultan turned his face to the willow,
573:	҆и вди́гна пꙋ́шка та на чл҃ка своегѡ́	and he raised his rifle against his man,
574:	҆и ви́кна мꙋ:	and he shouted at him:
575:	зáщо не те́глиш вь́же то бре́,	ʺWhy donʹt you pull the rope, dude?ʺ
576:	сегá тѧ свàлѧмь ѿ вербá та;	ʺNow Iʹm pulling you down from the willow!ʺ
577:	о́̂нь тѐглѧше на горѣ́,	He was pulling up,
578:	҆алá ҆и á̂зь теглѧх на до́лꙋ,	but I, too, was pulling down,
579:	почто рꙋ́це мо́и́ не бы́ша све́рзани.	because my hands were not bound.
580:	҆и като вди́гна сꙋлтáнꙋ ҆о́чи сво́и́ на горѣ́,	And as the sultan raised his eyes upwards,
	милош дрꙋгар мо̀и́ побѣ́гна,	my friend Miloš ran away,
581:	҆и не и́̂маше ко́и́ да мѧ̀ вдѝгне.	and there was no one to raise me.
582:	тоги́ва сꙋлтáнꙋ- речѐ на чл҃вка своегѡ́,	Then the sultan said to his man:
583:	слези́ до̀лꙋ	ʺCome down!ʺ
584:	да пои́дем на се́ло	ʺLet us go to the village,ʺ
585:	҆и тàмо да го́ оу̂бѣ́симь	ʺand let us hang him there,ʺ
	да го̀ вѝдѧт вси́ чл҃вцы,	ʺso that all the people see him!ʺ
586:	҆и подáдоха ми вь рꙋ̀цѣ мо̀й кон́ѧ моегѡ̀	And they put my horse to my hands,
	да го̀ водѧ за юз͛дá та,	so that I lead him by the bridle,
587:	҆и ҆он́ыѧ ме повле́че са͒ вь́же́ то на шı́ѧ та ми,	and that one dragged me with the rope on my neck,
588:	҆а сꙋлтáнꙋ и́̂дѧше слѣдь менѐ	and the sultan went on a horse behin me,
589:	҆и ψꙋ̀ваше мѧ	and he was cursing me,
590:	҆и дꙋ̀маше мѧ:	and he was saying to me:
591:	коги́ á̂зь тебѣ́ не ҅оубı̀а, ҆ами́ когѡ́ да ҆оубı́а,	ʺIf I wonʹt kill you, whom should I killʺ
	да вѣнчеиш ты́ моѧ̀ та женá са͒ гїавꙋ́рина:	ʺwhen (lit. to) you wed my woman with a heathen?!ʺ
592:	҆и ҆áзь молчах	And I was silent,
593:	почто́ бѣ́хь ѿчаѧ́ль себѣ́ ѿ живе́нїе.	because I was desperate from living.
594:	҆алá като́ мѧ во̀дѧше приз͛ по́ле то,	But as he was thus dragging me through the field,
	бѐше трѣ́ва ҆и бꙋ̀рѧнь до кол́енѣ	there was grass and weed up to my knees,
595:	҆и не мо́жах да хо̀дѧ,	and I could not walk.
596:	коли́ко крàты пáдах	How many times I fell!
597:	҅а ҆о́нь те́глѧше вь́же то	And he was pulling the rope,
598:	вь мàлѣ хо́чеше да мѧ̀ придáви.	he was nearly going to strangle me.
599:	҆и сꙋлтàнꙋ като̀ ҅и́дѧше слѣ́дь ме́не ҆и ψꙋ́ваше мѧ	And the sultan, as he was going behind me and cursing,
	чáктисѧ пищо́ль ҆оу зàдѧ ми,	he struck the pistol to my back,
600:	҆алà не фàти ҆о́г͛нь,	but the fire did not catch,
601:	по́слѣ пáкь чакти́сѧ	then he struck again,
602:	҆и фàти ҆о́г͛нь,	and the fire caught,
603:	҆алà ҆или́ мѧ не сполꙋчи́,	but he either did not get me,
	҆илѝ на ме́не не фар̀ли,	or he did not aim at me,
604:	почт́о бѐше пїàнь.	because he was drunk.
605:	҆и като́ ҆излáзохме на пꙋ́ть, ре́че на чл҃вка сво́и	And as we got to the road, he said to his man:
606:	сто́и́,	ʺStay!ʺ
607:	҆и н҅ıи́ стàнахме,	And we stood.
608:	тоги́ва запре́гна пꙋ́шка своѧ́ на срѣ́що мене́ бли́зꙋ,	Then he raised his rifle against me closely,
609:	҆и ре́че ми:	and he said:
610:	гїавꙋ̀рь: ско́ро сеги́ прїиди́ на вѣ́рꙋ нàшꙋ,	ʺMake haste to turn to our faith, heathen,ʺ
611:	почт҆о е́̂то то̀и́ ча͒ хочеш да пои́дешь ѿ то́и́ свѣ́ть,	ʺfor now, in this moment, you will leave this world!ʺ
612:	҆и á̂зь какво̀ да сто́рѧ,	And, what should I do?
613:	ѿ смѐртныи́ стрàхь изсо́хнаха ми оуста т	From the fear of death my mouth dried,
614:	҆и не мо̀жах да продꙋмам,	and I could not speak,
615:	ток͛мо то̀лкова мꙋ рекох:	I merely said:
616:	а̂ ефе́нди, хи́чь вѣрà са͒ пꙋ́шка бы́ва ли,	ʺAh, sir, does faith come with a gun?ʺ
617:	҆амá хо́чеш да ҆оубı̀ешь ҆едно́гѡ по́па,	ʺso you will kill one priest,ʺ

622:	раздѣлѧ́ш͛ ли о̂нáѧ невѣ́ста ѿ мꙋ́жа ҆еѧ́;	ʺWill you separate that bride from her man?ʺ
623:	҆и ҆áзь ѿгово̀рихь,	And I answered:
624:	во ҆и́стинꙋ, кои́ ча͒ и́̂да на карнобат раздѣ́лѧм͛ ги,	ʺTruly, in the moment I will go to Karnobat, I will separate them.ʺ
625:	заклен́и сѧ рече́:	ʺSwear!ʺ he said.
626:	҆и ҆áзь що да сто́рѧ	And, what should I do?
627:	ѿ страх сме́ртнии заклѧ́х сѧ	By the fear of death, I sweared,

640:	҆и наченах да трепе́ра като̀ ѿ тресàвица.	and I began to tremble as if from fever,
641:	҆и до ҅еди́нь ча͒ дофтáса тàмо и̂ милош,	and an hour later, Miloš came there too,
642:	҆и като̀ ме вѝдѣ подиви́ сѧ	and, as he saw me, he was amazed,
643:	и̂ вни́де вь оꙋ́жàсь.	and he was in terror,
644:	҆и фáти сѧ за оу̂ране́нное лице́ свое́,	and he caught his wounded face,
645:	҆и рѐче:	and he said:
646:	҆о̀хь ҆оч҃е мо̀и́, чи́ жи́вь ли ҆еси́;	ʺO my Father, are you really alive?ʺ
647:	҆áзь речѐ като́ побѣ́гнах мно̀го глѐдах ѿ дале́чь на вербà та ви́сиш͛ ли ҆оубѣ́син,	ʺMe,ʺ he said, ʺas I ran away, I was looking many times from the distance on the willow, whether you were hanging there,ʺ

710:	҆а на ҆архїерѐи́ство мѧ рꙋкоположи́ха, вь лѣ̀то ·1794· пàки на мц͒ь септем вь ·зı· де́нь вь нед҃лю.	and they appointed me a bishop again in September on Sunday, on the 17th day in 1794.
711:	҆и са͒ коѧ́то ҅ѡдѐжда бе́ше ѡ̂блечен тогдáшныи́ ҆архїер(е҆и) кѵр гедеѡ́нь на ко́тель като̀ мѧ хїротони́са на сщ҃е́н͛ство,	And the same clothes, which the bishop, kyr Gedeon of that time wore in Kotel as he appointed me as a priest,
	҆оу таѧ̀ ҆ѡде́жда ҆ѡблѧко́ша менѐ като́ мѧ хїротонисáша на ҆архїере́и́ство.	thay gave those cloths to me asI ws being appointed a bishop.
712:	҆и като́ стáнах ҆архїере́й оу тоѧ̀ де́нь вели́ка рáдость стáна ҆оу митро̀поли,	And as I became the bishop, on that day there was a great joy at the metropolitan see,
713:	҆и ҆оу до̀мь нàшь трапе́за ҅и ҅оучрежде́нїе велѝкое.	and in our house (there was) a great feast and celebration (?)
714:	по́слѣ сѣдѧх на ҅арбанáси три́ мц͒и	Afterwards, I remained in Arbanasi for three months,
	доклѐ са наго́твѧ,	until I prepare myself,
	҆и докле́ ми прїи́ди ферман ҆и повеле́нїе ѿ цр͛игрáда.	and until I receive a firman and command from Tsarigrad.
715:	и́ повди́гнах сѧ да пои́да на е̂пархı̀а моѧ́	And (then) I rose to go to my eparchy,
	декем на ·гı· де́нь	on 13th day of December.
716:	҆алà бѐше лю̀тыи́ стꙋ̀дь ҆и снѣ́гь,	But it was fiercely cold and (a lot of) snow.
717:	҆ѝмахь намѣ́рѐнїе да пости́гна на е̂пк͒пı̀а (моѧ) за рождство́ х҃во,	I intended to reach my bishopric for the Christmas,
718:	҆и като́ пои́дох на плевен,	and as I went to Pleven,
	почꙋ́диха сѧ хр͒тї̆аны те	the Christians were amazed,
	кáко с͛мь дерзнꙋ́ль да пои́дꙋ на тако́вое вре́ме на врáца.	how could I dare to go in such a weather (time?) to Vratsa.
719:	҆Єто пе́рваѧ смꙋщѐннаѧ вѣ́сть сѧ́ заче́на.	Here, the first reports of disturbances (?) came (lit. began),
720:	и̂ ҆áзь попи́тахь,	and I asked,
721:	какво е товà смꙋще́нїе камто̀ врáца;	ʺWhat are those disturbances in Vratsa?ʺ
722:	а̂ ҅о́ни ме реко́ша: кàко ҅и́ма пазванџи́ ѡ̂ꙋл(ꙋ) крамолá са͒ ге́нчь а̂гà, ҆и са͒ хамамџи́ ҆ѡꙋлꙋ́	And they told me, that there is a strife between Pazvantoglu and Genc Agha and Hamamci-oglu,
	що гı̀ѝ ҆изго́ниль ҆из вѝдин,	whom he expelled from Vidin,
723:	҆и ҆о́ны собрáли нѧ́колико воискá тꙋ́рцы ҆и ҅арнаꙋты да сá бı́ѧт са͒ пазванџıа,	and they, having collected an army of Turks and Arnauts to fight Pazvantoglu,
724:	҆алá като́ не мо́гат да пои́дат на ви́динскїа кадили́кь ѿ пазвáноваѧ во́искá	but, as they could not move to the qadilik of Vidin because of Pazvantogluʹs forces,
	сѣдѧт по врачáнскїѝ се́ла,	they are stationed in villages around Vratsa.
725:	҆ами́ кàко да поѝдем ҆нıи́ на врáца	Now, how should we go to Vratsa?
726:	сѣдѧ̀хь на плѐвен три́ дни́,	I sat in Pleven for three days,
727:	҆и на ч(е)тве́ртїа ден востáнах	and on the fourth day I rose,
728:	҆и потеглих камто́ врáца	and I went towards Vratsa.
729:	прати́хь напре́дь чл҃вцы се́лѧны	I sent some people, villagers,
	а̂ко̀ ҅и́ма воискà по селà та	if there would be soldiers in the villages,
	да потекꙋт на срѣ́ща на͒	so that they go to meet me,
	да мѝ скáжат да сà вьзвàрним пáкь на пле́вен:	to tell me to go back to Pleven.
730:	҆и тáкѡ по҅идо̀хме до се́ло ко҆инлáри	And thus we went to the village of Koinlari,
	що ѐ по́ль пꙋ̀ть до врáца.	which is on the half way to Vratsa,
731:	҆алá по срѣдѐ но̀щи прїидо́ша чл҃вцы	but in the middle of the night, some people came,
732:	й сказàша, кàко дои̂шлѐ на се́ло бранѝца до ·400· пандꙋ́ры пазвáнски	and they said, that about 400 pandurs came to the village of Branitsa,
	що ѐ е̂дин ча͒ бли́зꙋ то̀ сел́о до ко҆инлари,	which is about one hour away from Koinlari.
733:	҆алà то́ ҅и́ме пандꙋ́ри нı̀и́ като́ не зн́аим ѡ̂б͛зе́ ны е̂дин стрàхь	But as we did know this word ʺpandursʺ, we became afraid,
734:	чꙋ́дѧхми сѧ кàмо да поѝдем,	we wondered, where to go,
735:	пратих чл҃вцы да ми́ фатѧт ꙗ̂сакчїѝ	I sent men to get me armed guides,
736:	ӑлà ѿ стꙋ́дь ҆и ѿ страх не хо́че нѝкои́ да по҆иде,	but, because of cold and fear, no one wanted to go.
737:	стáна ѡ̂бѣ̀дь	The midday came,
738:	чл҃вцы не дохо̀ждат,	no men are coming,
739:	҆а ме́не страх да нѐ припàднат пандꙋ̀ры те да ни́ соблѧ́кат,	and I (am) afraid, that pandurs would come to rob us,
740:	҆алá ҆едвам на҅ишлѐ е̂дногѡ́ тꙋ́рчина,	but they hardly found a single Turk,
741:	повди́гнахми са ѿ тоѐ село̀	we went away from the village,
742:	҆и като̀ приближи́хме до врàца, гле́даме	and, as we approached Vratsa, we watch:
743:	толѝко во҅искá ҅излáзы ѿ врáца	so much forces go out of Vratsa,
744:	҆и ҅и́ди на срѣ̀ща на͒,	and they go directly against us!
745:	҆алá не знáѧхме како́ва е таѧ̀ во҆искá	But we did not know, whose (lit. what kind of) army it is!
746:	доклѐ разбирем коли́ко стрàхь поте́глихме,	How much fear we suffered, until we found out!
747:	а то̀ бы́ли врачàни	But those were Vratsans,
748:	ѿхождàли да го́нѧть- ҆онáѧ вои̂скà	moving out to pursue those armies,
749:	почто̀ разсы́пали ҆и соблѧ́кли врачàнски те се́ла.	because they looted and pillaged villages around Vratsa.
750:	҆И прї҆идо́хь на епк͒пı́а моѧ,	And I came to my bishopric,
751:	҆алà ҆и тáѧ не ѐ по до́лꙋ ѿ затво́рка,	but that also was not much better (lit. lesser ?) than a prison,
752:	нѐка бꙋ́де,	(but) let it be,
753:	҆и прїе́ха ме хр͒тїаны те рàдостно,	and the Christians welcomed me with joy,
754:	҆и хо́дѧх по цр҃кви те вь нед҃ли вь прáздниц	and I went around the churches on Sunday, on feasts,
755:	҆и полагах поуче́нїе по нàшемꙋ бо́лгарскомꙋ ҆ꙗзы́кꙋ,	and I was preaching in our Bulgarian language,
756:	҆а ҆о́ны хр͒тїáны	and those Christians,
	катѡ́ не чꙋ̀ле ѿ дрꙋ́гїи́ ҆архїере́а тако́вое по нàшемꙋ ҅ꙗзы̀кꙋ поучѐнїе,	as they did not hear from another bishop such preachings in our language,
	҆и́маха ми като́ ҆едногѡ́ фїло́софа.	they had me for something like a philosopher.
757:	ходих по селá та	I travelled around the villages,
758:	собрах мїрı̀а та,	I collected state taxes,
759:	҆алá по́мо́щь мл͒сты́нѧ какво́то ҅и́ма ѡ̂бычáй ѕѣлѡ́ мáло мѧ подари́ша,	but they donated, as usually, a very few offerings, (i.e.) helpings,
760:	почто̀ ҆оу таѧ̀ годи́на бе́ше голѧм глáдь по всѐ болгарı̀а	because in that year, there was a great famine in all of Bulgaria,
761:	два десѧт пари́ беш̀е е̂днà ҅окá брàшно,	twenty pieces was (paid for) one oka of flour,
762:	҆ѡбѣщáва ми сѧ за напред	they were giving promises for the future,
	а̂ко подари́ бг҃ь ҆из͛о̂би́лїе	if God would give (them) prosperity,
	да м̀ѧ помо́гꙋть.	that they would help me.
763:	Като̀ сверших врачáнскїа кадилѝкь на мц͒ь ҆ıꙋ́нїа	As I finished the qadilik of Vratsa in the month of June,
	востàнах да по҅ида на плѐвень да собирем ҅и тàмо,	I went to Pleven, to collect (the state tax) there as well.
764:	пратих чл҃вцы като̀ приближи́хме до пле́вень да подадꙋ̀ть вѣ́сть	As we approached Pleven, I sent out people to get news.
765:	како̀ хочем тàмо да пои́дем,	As we are going to enter,
	прїи̂до́ша на срѣ́ща ни нѧ̀кои́ поп҃ве	some priests came to meet us,
766:	҆и ре́коха:	and they said:
767:	деспо́ти не ѐ возмо̀жно да прїи́деш сеги́ ҅оу пле́вен	ʺO Lord, it is not possible to go now to Pleven,ʺ
768:	почто́ сѧ бı̀ѧть внꙋ́тре топꙋ́зь ѡ̂ꙋлꙋ, ҅и налбáнть ѡ̂ꙋлꙋ за а̂҅ꙗнли́кь	ʺBecause Topuz-oglu and Nalbant-oglu fight each other inside for the office of ayan,ʺ
	ко́и́ да бꙋ́де ҅аꙗ́̂нин,	ʺwho will be the ayan,ʺ
769:	҆и ни ҆излàзи е̂ди́нь хр͒тїáнин ѿ до́ма свое́гѡ,	ʺand no Christian goes out of his house.ʺ
770:	҆и нı̀и́ но́щем скрѝто ҆излѧ̀зохме,	And we went away, secretly, in the night,
771:	҆и като̀ зами́нахме покрàи́ плѐвен чꙋхме пꙋ̀шки те като̀ пꙋ́кать,	and as we passed around Pleven, we heard guns firing.
772:	҆алá докле́ зами́нем како́в͛ ли страх поте́глихме,	But until we passed, how much fear we suffered!
773:	҆и пои́̂дохме на ҆арбанáси.	And we went to Arbanasi.
774:	҆алá като́ ҆излѧ́зох á̂зь ҆из͛ пархı̀а та	But as I left the eparchy,
	бж҃їемь по́пꙋщенїемь то̀е лѣ́то оу̂дар̀и е̂днá чꙋ́ма напрáсно	by the Godʹs permission, that year (summer?) was suddenly hit by a plague,
775:	҆и запáли сѧ всѧ́ е̂пархı̀а ҆и касабы́ те ҆и селá та,	and all of eparchy and towns and villages were ignited (by the plague),
776:	не ҆ѡстáна чи́сто е̂дно́ село́ грѣ̀хь рáди нáших,	not a single village remained pure because of our sins,
777:	҆и ѿ тоѧ̀ смѐртныѝ страх сѣдѧх на а̂рбанáси четы́ри мц͒и,	and because of that fear of death I sat in Arbanasi for four months,
778:	що́ бѧх собрáль ѿ врачáнскїа кадили́кь пари́ похáрчих ги.	(and) whatever money I had collected from the qadilik of Vratsa, I spent.
779:	по мц͒ь ҅ѡкто́мврїа прїидо̀ша пле́внѧни да ми́ оўзе́мат	In (after?) the month of October, people of Pleven came to meet (lit. take from ?) me,
780:	҆и реко̀ша:	and they said:
781:	҆и́ма чꙋ̀ма ı́҅ѡ̀ще	ʺThere is still the plague,ʺ
782:	҆ала повечѐ по тꙋ́рци те,	ʺbut more among the Turks,ʺ
783:	҆а по хр͒тїáны те са мáло пресѣ́че:	ʺand it did not slash around Christians so much.ʺ
784:	҆и ҆áзь поѝдох са͒ них на пле́вень,	And I went with them to Pleven,
785:	прїи́де ҆един поп да мѐ цѣлꙋ̀ва рꙋ́ка,	a priest came to kiss my hand,
786:	глдам го	I look at him,
787:	лице́ то мꙋ като́ ҅о́г͛нь запáлен	his face burning like a fire,
788:	҆и като̀ хо́чеше ѿ менѐ да си́ по҅иде,	and as he was going away from me,
	чꙋ́ѧмь дрꙋ̀гїи́ поп мꙋ дꙋ́ма:	I hear another priest telling him:
789:	зáщо цѣлꙋ́на на деспо́ти рꙋ́ка	ʺWhy did you kiss the lordʹs hand?ʺ
790:	не ви́диш ли себѣ́ си како̀ тѧ фàтила чꙋ́ма та,	ʺDo you not see, that you were caught by the plague?ʺ
791:	҆алá на ҆и́стинна бѐше тáкѡ,	But that was really so,
792:	почто́ тàѧ но̀щь ҅оу̀мре.	because he died that night.
793:	на ҆оу̀тре прїидо́ша да ҅ѝщат ѿ ме́не поп҃ве да го̀ погре́бꙋт,	In the morning, they came to ask me for priests to bury him.
794:	҆ако̀ не прáтиш реч́е поп҃ве те, ҆а нı̀и́ ѿхо̀ждаме на ҆агá та	ʺIf you will not send the priests,ʺ they (lit. he ?) said, ʺwe will go to the agha,ʺ
795:	҆и ҆оуз́емами ги си́лом да го̀ погребꙋт,	ʺand we will take them by force, so that they bury him!ʺ
796:	҆о́ны до сегá вси́ чꙋ́мавыи́ погребо̀ша-	ʺUntil now, they buried all the ones caught by the plague,ʺ
797:	҆ами́ то҆гѡ по́па защо̀ да не погребꙋт,	ʺso why should they not bury that priest?ʺ
798:	҆и ҅àзь що̀ да сто̀рѧ	And now, what should I do?
799:	прáтих ги	I sent them,
800:	҆и пог͛ре́боха го,	and they buried him,
801:	҆и на ҅оꙋ́тре прїидо́ша вси́ при мѐне:	and in the morning they all came to me,
802:	҆и ҆áзь ви́дѣхь кáко сѧ смѣсих са͒ них.	and I saw, how I mingled with them,
803:	намы́слих да слꙋ́жа лїтꙋ́ргı̀а да сѧ̀ пречащ́ѧ ст҃ых тàи́нь,	I thought about serving a liturgy, so that I take part on the sacrament,
804:	҆а чи́ какво́- бг҃ь подари́,	and see what God grants.
805:	҆и хо́дихме по́слѣ из͛ пле́вен	And then we left Pleven,
806:	҆и по селà та ст҃ы́хме во̀дꙋ по всю́дꙋ	and we consecrated water everywhere,
807:	҆и бг҃ь мѧ сохрани́.	and God spared me.
808:	҆и тáкѡ поми́нахме тı̀е две́ годи́ни,	And thus we passed those two years,
809:	҆и що̀ собрах ҅едвам сѧ ѿплатих мїрı̀ѧ та ҆и фа҆ида,	and (with) what I collected, I hardly paid the state tax and interest (?),
810:	҅и покри́х сѧ тро́шка т	and I covered only a part (?)
811:	не можих да свáлѧ̀ ѿ бо́рча.	I could not shake off the debt.
812:	А вь лѣ́то ·1796· напàднаха пазвáнски те ха҆идꙋ́ти	And in the year 1796, Pazvantogluʹs haiduks attacked,
813:	҆и ҆испо̀лниха вси́- се́ла ҆и касабы́,	and they filled all the towns and villages,
814:	веч́е не можих да ѝзлѧ́за ни́где,	and I could not go anywhere anymore.
815:	провàждах поп҃ве́ те да соби́рать мїрı̀а та	I was sending priests to collect the state tax,
816:	҆алá нꙋ́жно полови́на та не мо́жаха да оу̂зѐмат.	but they could not collect (even) a half (of the) necessary (amount).
817:	на тáѧ са годи́на (повди́гна) оурꙋмь҆ели́ валисѝ мостафá пашá са͒ ·40· хїлѧ́ды во҆искá ве́рхь паз͛вàнть ҆ѡꙋлꙋ́,	That year, Mustafa Pasha, wali of Rumelia, rose up with an army of 40 thousand against Pazvantoglu,
818:	҆и держáха ви́дин мно̀го вре́ме на маїсере́,	and they besieged Vidin for a long time,
819:	҆и не можи́ха да мꙋ̀ сто́рѧт ни́що,	and they could not do anything,
820:	҆и като́ си по҆иде мостафá паш,	and when Mustafa Pasha retreated,
	пазвáнски те хаи̂дꙋ́ти пáкь ҆испо̀лниха епархı́а та мо̀ѧ всѐ.	Pazvantogluʹs haiduks filled my eparchy again.
821:	вь лѣ́то ·1797· смѣ́сиха са карџалı́ѝ те са͒ пазвáнски те чл҃вцы	In the year 1797, kirdzhalis mingled with Pazvantogluʹs men,
822:	҆и прїидо́ша вѐрхь врáца	and they came against Vratsa,
823:	҆и держáха ѧ̆̀ ма҆исере ҆о̀смь днѝ	and they besieged it for eight days,
824:	҆и бı̀ѧха сѧ	and they fought,
825:	҆алá не можи́ха да влѧ́зꙋть внꙋ́тре:	but they could not get inside.
826:	҆а ҆áзь двà днѝ по напред но̀щемь побѣ́гнах	But I, two days earlier, ran away in the night,
	да поѝдем на рáховꙋ тà да приминем на влàшкаѧ зе́млѧ,	as to go to Rakhovo, and then to pass to Wallachia.
827:	ѿкь́са сѧ твáрникꙋ ко̀нь наш оу̂ таѧ̀ но́щь	In that night, our pack horse (?) tore away,
828:	҆и ли́ψа ми за две́ ста грош нѧ̀що,	and I lost something for two hundred groschen,
829:	҆и докле́- приминем на дꙋ́нава коли́ко ли стрàхь поте́глихме бг҃ь знáи́,	and until we got to Danube – how much fear we suffered! God knows!
830:	҆и пои́дох на ҅арбанаси	And I went to Arbanasi,
831:	посѣдѧх мàло докле́ са мáхнаха карџалı̀и́ те ѿ ҆епархı́а та,	I sat there, until the kirdzhalis moved out of the eparchy,
832:	҆и пáкь пои̂дох под е́̂сень на врáца.	and in the fall, I went again to Vratsa.
833:	вь лѣ̀то ·1798· пàкь сѧ повдѝгна во҆искá цàрскаѧ- ве́рхь пазвàнть ѡ̂ꙋлꙋ́ мно̀жество мно́гое	In the year 1798, the imperial army rose up again against Pazvantoglu, a great many (of them),
834:	почто́ бе́ше ҆ѡбладáль до рꙋсчꙋ́кь ҆и до вáрна.	because he had conquered (a territory) as far as Rusčuk and Varna.

842:	като̀ са мáло по ѡ̂слáби пꙋ́тѧ но̀щем пои̂дох на те́тювен през͛ горá та	When the way became more clear (lit. weaker ?), I went in the night to Teteven through the forest (hills ?),
843:	ве́ршени те ҆о́чи те ми хо́чеха да ҆извáдѧт,	the branches (?) were going to stick my eyes off,

	҆амѝ пои́дох са͒ тѐрновскїа протосѵ́ггель да собѝраме те́рновскаѧ е̂пархı̀а:	I went with the chancellor of (the Bishop of) Tarnovo to collect (state tax) in Tarnovo eparchy,
856:	҆и послѣ́ пои́̂дох на свѣщов	and afterwards I went to Svištov,
857:	на҆идох дѣцá та го́ли сѣдѧт на рогозѝна,	I found my children: (as) they sit naked on a rag,

861:	и́ все́ воѝск͛а бе́ше на ви́дин	and all the army was at Vidin,
862:	бı́ѧха го да го̀ оу̀зе́мат,	they were attacking the city to take it.
863:	҆ами́ како́в͛ ли стрáхь поте́глих	Now, what fear did I suffer,
	като̀ ходѧх по селá та да соби́рам- мїрı̀а,	as I was going around the villages to collect the state tax!
864:	врàщаха са ҆и бѣгàха тꙋ́рци дѣлı̀и ѿ ҆оурдı́а та	Turkish delis were returning and fleeing from the army,
865:	соблѧ́чаха селá та	they were looting the villages,
866:	҆и сꙋбаши те ѡ̂бѝраха,	they were robbing from the governors too,
867:	҆а á̂зь хо̀дѧх по селá та.	and I was going around the villages.
868:	нàи́ послѣ́ като́ развáли ҆и разсы́па пазвàнть ѡ̂ꙋ́лꙋ по ст҃го димѝтрїа цр͒ка та ҅оурдı́а,	Finally, as Pazvantoglu defeated the imperial army after the (feast of) St. Demetrius,
	҆áзь бѣ́хь по селà та,	I was in the villages,
869:	сы́пнаха са ѿ вѝдин тꙋрци ѿ ви́дин по сел́а та да бѣгат,	the Turks spilled from Vidin to villages running.
870:	҆ами́ са͒ како́вь трꙋ́дь ҆и стрáхь пострадах	Now, how much toil and fear I suffered,
	докле́ са добы́ѧ веднош до врáца	until I finally fought my way to Vratsa!
871:	како́вый ли го́ры ҆и хо́лми ҆и до̀лы не ҅ѡбоколи́хме.	What kind of mountains (forests) and hills and valleys we did not pass!
872:	҆и тàмо мàло нѧ̀ко҅и де́нь посѣдѧх,	And I sat there for a couple of days,
873:	прїи́де вѣ́сть кàко и̂ди на врàца á̂лю пáша са͒ пѧ́т͛ нá десѧт хїлѧ̀да во́и́скà:	(and) news came, that Ali Pasha marches on Vratsa with an army of 15 thousand.
874:	но́щем прїидо́ша конакчıѝ	In the night, the garrisoners (?) came,
875:	и̂ ҆áзь като́ чюх востàнах таѧ̀ но̀щь на ѡ̂́смь чáса да бѣгам ѿ врàца на во̀нь,	and I, when I heard (them), woke up at the eighth hour (2 AM) to flee from Vratsa away.
876:	но̀щь тѐмна	Night (was) dark,
877:	врѐме бѐше дожде́вно	the weather was rainy,
878:	҆а планинà стрь́мна висо́ка,	and the mountain steep and high.
879:	коли́ко ли крáты пáдах на пꙋ́тю	How many times I fell on the way,
	доклѐ пои́дем на черепиш монастыр,	until I came (lit. went) to the Čerepiš Monastery!
880:	҆и като̀ пои́дохме на монастыр не наи́дохме нѝкогѡ,	And as we came (lit. went) to the monastery, we found nobody.
881:	калꙋ̀геры побѣ́гнали	The monks (having) fled,
882:	монасты́рѧ затво̀рен	monastery closed,
883:	҆и не знаим гдѐ са	and we donʹt know where they are.
884:	хел́и са слꙋчѝ е̂дин поп҃ на пꙋ́ть се́лѧнин	Finally, one priest happened (to be) on the road, a villager,
885:	та ги́ знаѧль како̀ бѣ́гат оу̂ е̂дна пещерà	and he know, that they flee into one cave,
886:	҆и заве́де ни при тѣ́х,	and he led us to them,
887:	҆и сѣдѧх тáмо при них ҆оу о̂нáѧ пещерá два десѧт ҆и че́тыри дни́,	and I sat with them in that cave for twenty-four days,
888:	и̂ ҅оузе́хь стꙋ́дь	and I got cold,
889:	҆и разболѧ̀х сѧ,	and I became ill,
890:	и̂ четы́ри днѝ бо́лен лежах тàмо	and for four days I was lying there ill,
891:	послѣ́ сѧ- згрѣѧх	afterwards I got warmer,
892:	҆и мáло по ҆оуздрàвѧх.	and I got a bit better.
893:	҆и востáнах да пои́да ҅оу дрꙋ́гїи́ монастыр	And then I stood up to go to another monastery,
	що ѐ на софı̀искаѧ е̂пархı̀а.	which is in the eparchy of Sofia.
894:	҆алá тáмо планины̀ вы́соки,	But there are high mountains,
895:	ко̀нь не мо́жи да сà ҆ѧ́зды	a horse cannot be ridden,
896:	҅а мене́ болѧ́ха нозѣ́ те	and my legs were aching,
897:	не мо́жах да ход̀ѧ пе́шь,	I could not walk on foot,
898:	҅а восхо́дь ҆и нисхо̀дь и́̂ма двá чáса,	and the ascent and descent take (lit. have) two hours,
899:	҆и докле да возлѧ́за ҆и да слѧ́за	and until I ascended and descended,
	во ҆ѝстинꙋ са͒ сле́зы ѡ̂пла̂ках живот мо̀и́.	truly, with tears I did mourn for my life.
900:	҅и тáмо сѣдѧх ·ді· дни́,	And there I sat for 14 days,
901:	҆и́ прїи́де ми пи́смо ѿ врáца	and then a letter came to me from Vratsa,
	кáко ҆оубı̀ль капитáнь пáша ҆àлю пáшꙋ на рáховꙋ,	that the Kapetan Pasha killed Ali Pasha in Raxovo,
902:	и́ вои̂скá тá мꙋ са разне́сла,	and his army was disbanded (lit. carried away ?),
903:	҆и на врàца прї҆ише́ль- дрꙋ̀гı̀и́, ҆ıсꙋфь пáша да зымꙋ́ва тàмо,	and to Vratsa came another, Yusuf Pasha, to stay for the winter there,
904:	҆и пи́шат кáко е ҆епк͒пı̀а прáздна,	and they write me, how the bishopric is empty,
905:	҆и ҆ıсꙋ́фь пàша до̀брь чл҃вкь	and that Yusuf Pasha (is) a good man,
906:	҆ами́ да си́ доѝдеш на е̂пк͒пı́а та.	ʺSo, come to your bishopric!ʺ
907:	҆алá бе́ше снѣ̀гь глꙋбо́гь зи́ма лю́та,	But there was a deep snow, a fierce winter,
908:	десѧт ча͒ е́̂сть ѿ тáмо	(the way) is ten hours from there,
909:	е̂двам за три́ (дни) по҆и́до́хме:	we made it hardly in three days.
910:	и́ на врàца сѣдѧх колк̀о десѧт дни́ ми́рно:	And in Vratsa I sat, how much, ten days peacefully.
911:	пос̀лѣ прїидо́ша ҆оу врáца десѧт баирáци ҆арнаꙋ́ти,	Afterwards, ten banners of Arnauts came to Vratsa,
912:	и̂ като́ не и́̂маше прáздни хи́жи за конàцы.	and, as there were no empty houses for garrison,
	напо̀лниха е̂пк͒пı̀а та	they filled the bishopric,
	кол̀ко пет на де́сѧт дꙋ́шы да сѣдѧт тáмо	how many, about fifteen souls to sit there,
	҆àзь да ги́ хрáнѧ,	(and) me to feed them,
913:	҆а ꙋдáѧ ҆и́маше ток͛мо е̂днá	but there was only one room,
914:	и̂м́аше ҆и дрꙋ́га	there was also another one,
915:	҆алà ѧ бѣхà разсы́пали тꙋ́рцы	but the Turks had messed it up.
916:	вр́еме зи̂мное стꙋ̀дь голѧ́мь	The time (was) winter, (of?) great cold,
917:	почто̀ ҆испервен не бы́ло епк͒пı̀а,	because, originally, it was not a bishopric,
918:	҆ами́ бы̀ль мето́х цр҃ко̀внїи́ за калꙋ́гери да падат тàмо.	it was a monastery ground belonging to the Church for monks to fall (?) there.
919:	҆алá докл́е нá҆идꙋ врѐме да побѣ́гна ѿ них коли́ко л͛жи́ не положи́хме,	Now, until I find a right time to flee from them, how many lies we did not use!
920:	҆ами́ оу̂ коѧ̀ хи́жа да пои́да като́ са всѐ ҆исполне́ни са͒ тꙋ́рцы.	But to what house I should go, if all are filled by Turks?
921:	побѣ́гнах при татар ҆ааси́,	I ran to the Tatar commander,
922:	à̂зь са͒ зелѐнь калпáкь,	me with a green turban,
923:	пѝтат͛ мѧ	they ask me:
924:	що̀ си ты́ за чл҃вкь,	ʺWho the hell are you?ʺ
925:	да рекꙋ̀, влд҃ка ѐ̂смь, не дàва ми рꙋ̀ка,	To say ʺI am a bishopʺ would not be handy,

928:	и о́̂ны мѧ пи́таха за лѧ́ковы,	And they asked me for medicine,
929:	҆и мене́ какво́ бы̀ возмо̀жно дадох ҆и́мь ѿвѣ́ть.	and I answered them as much as it was possible.
930:	пос́лѣ като́ бы̀ вечер по҅идох ҆оу ҆едного хр͒тїáнина	Afterwards, in the evening, I went to one Christian,
931:	҆и прїѐ ма при своѧ̀ челѧд,	and he welcomed me to his household,
932:	почто́ не и́̂маш дрꙋ̀гаѧ хѝжа прàздна ни́где,	because he did not have another house available,
933:	҆а слꙋ̀ги т мо̀ѝ вон,	but my servants (stood) outside,
934:	глѐдах кàко хо́чꙋт да ҅измрꙋ́дь ѿ стꙋ̀дь.	I watched as they were going to die of cold.
935:	ѝ̂скам да ҆излѧ́за ѿ врàца на вон,	I want to get out of Vratsa,
936:	҆алà пашо̀вıѝ ҆арнаꙋ́ти пазѧть капı̀и те	but, now, pashaʹs Arnauts are guarding the gates,
937:	҆и пи́тат ҆кои́ ѿходи, и̂ ко́и́ дохо́ди.	and they ask, who is going out and coming in.
938:	҆ами́ какво́ да сто́рѧ	So, what should I do?
939:	прати́хь напред твàрникꙋ са͒ дво̀ица тꙋ́рцы тáмошнїѝ,	First, I sent a pack horse with two local Turks,
940:	а̂ à̂зь завих глáвꙋ мо́ю са͒ шал	and I wrapped my head with a scarf,
941:	҅и оу̂зех вь рꙋ̀кꙋ камчи́кь,	and I took a staff in the hand,
942:	҆и подбрах напред сїи́зинꙋ,	and I sent the horse driver in front,
943:	҆и като пашо́вь татáринь бо́рзо излѧ́зох ҆из͛ капı̀а та,	and, as a pashaʹs Tatar, I quickly went through the gate,
944:	и̂ не познáха ме како́вь чл҃вкь ѐ̂смь.	and they did not recognize me, who I am.
945:	҆и поѝдохь пàкь на черепиш монастыр.	And I went again to the Čerepiš Monastery.
946:	и̂ на епк͒пı̀ѧ та оу̂держàха ҆о̀ный ҅арнаꙋ́ты- все́ посте́лѧ ҆и садѝни ҅и жи́то ҆и ҆ичими́кь ҅и вїно́	And in the bishopric, those Arnauts took (lit. conquered) all the bed(cloth?), and seed, and grain, and rye, and wine,
947:	все ҆из͛ѧдо́ша и̂ продадо́ша	they ate and sold everything,
948:	и̂ на тоѧ́ монастыр не можи́хме да сѣдим,	and we could not stay at that monastery,
949:	востàнах да по҆ида на дрꙋ̀гїи́ що́ е по далѐчь ѿ врáца	I stood up to go to another one, which is more far away from Vratsa.
950:	по҆идохме вечер кь̀сно на е̂дно̀ село́,	We came later in the evening to one village,
951:	а то̀ сѧ разбѣ̀гало	but it had fled:
952:	не и́̂ма ни ̂един чл҃вкь,	there is not a single person,
953:	не ҅ѝма хлѣбь,	there is no bread,
954:	не ҅ѝма дрѣ́ва	there is no wood,
955:	҆а стꙋ̀дь лю́ть но́щь до́лга по декем мц͒а,	and, as (it is) December, a fierce cold and a long night!
956:	хо́чехме ѿ стꙋ́дь да ҆измрем.	We were going to die of cold.
957:	на ̂оꙋ́тре востàнахме ран̀о	In the morning, we woke up early,
958:	пꙋ́ть не ҆ѝма	there is no way,
959:	снѣ́гь глꙋ́бокь,	the snow (is) deep,
960:	четы̀ри ча͒ мѣ́сто е̂двам за двá дни́ по҅идо́хме на кар͛лю́кꙋвскїа монастыр,	instead of four hours, we made it to the Karlukovo Monastery in two days,
961:	тáмо сѣдѧх пѧт шес҃т дни́	I sat there for five-six days,
962:	҆и оучи́нихме рожд҃ство хв҃о,	and we celebrated Christmas,
963:	и̂ тàмо наче́наха да прихо́ждат тꙋ̀рцы ѿ во҆искà та	and the Turks from the army began to come there,
964:	почто̀ като́ са вáрнаха ѿ ви́дин	because, as they returned from Vidin,
	по вси́ касаб́ы на ѡ͛колꙋ ҆и́маши паши́	in all towns around were pashas,
965:	по селà та пашалı̀ѝ хо́дѧха	pashasʹ men went around the villages,
	повы́ше да сá хрáнѧт ҆и да соблáчат селà та.	more to feed themselves and loot the villages,
966:	҅и не бы̀ возмо̀жно да сѣдѧ̀ ҆и на тои монастыр,	and it was not possible for me to sit even in that monastery,
967:	но пои̂дох пàкь на те́тевен,	so I went again to Teteven,
968:	҆и тáмо сѣдѧх ·м· дни́.	and I sat there for 40 days.
969:	҆и прїи́до̀ша- нѧ́ко҅и чл҃вцы по фев҃рꙋар мц͒а	And some people came in the February,
970:	҆и сказáша кàко востáнали капетан пашо́вы те делı̀и́	and they said, how the Kapetan Pashaʹs delis stood up,
	що̀ двѐ хїлѧ́ды зимꙋ́ваха на пле́вен,	two thousand (men), who spent the winter in Pleven,
971:	҆и á̂зь сѧ́ зарàдвах	and I was glad,
972:	҆и пои́дох на пле́вен,	and I went to Pleven,
973:	҆алà ми́ не прїѝде на оꙋ́̂мь	but it did not come to my mind,
	кáко е на врáца ҆ıсꙋфь пашá,	that Yusuf Pasha is in Vratsa,
	҆а на ло̀мь гюрџѝ пашà,	and that in Lom is Gjurci Pasha,
	҆а на влáшко на срѣ́що ло̀мь сїлїхтар хюсеин пашá,	and on the Wallachian side (of Danube) against Lom there is Silihtar Husein Pasha,
	що̀ са наи́ ло́шы зꙋлꙋмџı̀ѝ	who are the worst robbers,
974:	҆ами́ ҆ако поми́нат на пле́вен кáмо ҆áзь да бѣгам;	so if they would move on Pleven, where would I flee?
975:	не бѣ́гах ҆àзь како̀ е́̂смь нѧ́що ѕло̀ сто́риль,	I did not run because I had done something bad,
976:	҆амѝ ҅ѝме мое́ голѧ̀мо, влд҃ка,	but, (as a) bishop, my name (is) great,
977:	҆а паши т зꙋлꙋмџı̀и́,	and the pashas (are) robbers,
978:	да ме фáти са͒ десѧт кесı̀и́	even if they would catch me with ten kese,
	не е́ возмо́жно да сѧ́ свободѧ́,	it would not be possible to free myself,
979:	а̂ ҆àзь при менѐ не ҆и́мам сто́ грош,	and I donʹt have more than hundred groschen with me!
980:	дофтàсахме на плевен на зад͛ꙋшнаѧ сꙋббѡ́та,	We came to Pleven on the Saturday of the Souls,
981:	҆и сѣдѧх ми́рен до си́рныѧ пе́токь,	and I sat there in peace to the Shrove Friday.
982:	дофтàсаха вечеро̀ кь́сно на гюрџѝ пашá делı̀и́ те	Late in the evening, delis of Gjurci Pasha came,
983:	҆из͛разбы̀ха врáта	they broke the gate,
984:	прї҆идо́ша ҆и до нáшеѧ конакь ·вı· делı̀и́ са͒ ко́не,	into our mansion came 12 delis with horses,
985:	҆а нı̀и́ не ҅ѝмами хлѣ́бь ни ҆ичимик ни плѧ́ва ни сѣ́но,	but we have no bread, nor rye, nor chaff, nor hay!
986:	пáднахме на мо̀лба	We fell to our knees,
987:	҆и подàдохме пари́	and we offered money,
988:	҆и пои̂до́ша оу̂ дрꙋ́гїи́ до́мь,	and they went to another house,
989:	҆и сказáша кáко за҆оꙋ́тра ҆и́ди гюрџи́ пáша са͒ четы́ри хїлѧ́ды воӥскà,	and they said, that tomorrow Gjurci pasha comes with an army of four thousand,
990:	҆ами́ á̂зь кáмо да побѣ́гна	and now, where should I run to?
991:	по во́нь не мо́жи да сá пои́де ни́где,	More away one cannot go anywhere,
992:	а да сѣдѧ̀ ҆оу хр͒тїáнскаѧ хи́жа не ѐ ҆возмо́жно,	but to sit in a Christian house is impossible,
993:	но побѣ́гнах	but still I ran,
994:	҆и скри́х сѧ ҅оу е̂дин тꙋ́рецкїи́ харем,	and hid myself in one Turkish harem.
995:	помы́слих кáко ҆о́нь хо́че да сѣди́ дѐнь ҆или двà	I thought that he (Gjurci) will sit there for a day or two,
	҆и хоч̀е да си пои́де,	and he will go,
996:	҆алà не бы́ тàко,	but it was not so,
997:	почто̀ ҆о̀нь сѣде́ десѧт дни́,	for he sat for ten days,
998:	҆и като́ востàна ҆о̀нь,	and as he stood up,
	оу̂ то̀и́ дѐнь прїѝде ҆и хꙋсеин пàша са͒ шес҃т хїлѧ́ды вои̂скà,	on the same day came also Husein Pasha with an army of six thousand,
999:	҆и не ҆ѡстáвиха ни хр͒тїàнскїи ни тꙋ́рецкїи́ до̀ми прáздни,	and they did not leave neither Christian nor Turkish houses free,
1000:	повди́гна са ҆един кади́нскїѝ ви́кь пѝсакь,	a cry resounded between Turkish ladies,
1001:	҅алá ко̀҆и ги слꙋ̀шаше:	but who would care (lit. listen to them)?
1002:	прїидо́ша ҆и на нáшеѧ конàкь,	They also came to our mansion,
1003:	но не ҆и́маше тàмо мѣ̀сто за коне́	but there was no place for the horses,
1004:	та не ҆аре́саха.	so they did not like it,
1005:	҆ами́ доклѐ ходи́ха и̂ ѡ̂биколѧ̀ха о̀̂ныѧ до̀мь,	but as long as they were coming and walking around the house,
	҆àзь ѿ страх побѣгнах при сàмаѧ кадѝна,	I ran, because of fear, to the landlady herself,
1006:	҆а ҆она по ни́хное ѡ̂бы̀чаѝ ҆ѡбрàщаше лицѐ свое ѿ мене́ да ѧ̀ не гле́дам.	but she, according to their custom, was turning her face away from me, so that I donʹt see her.
1007:	҆и то́и́ пашà сѣде́- ·еı· дни́,	And that pasha sat for 15 days,
1008:	и́ тàкѡ сѣдѧх оу̂ ҆о̀ныѧ тꙋ́рецкїа харем ·кѕ· дни́.	and thus I sat in that Turkish harem for 26 days.
1009:	бѣ́ха вели́кїи́ по́сти	There was a great fasting,
1010:	҆а оу̂ тꙋ̀рчина не ҅ѝмаше за ҅ꙗде́нїе нѝщо,	and the Turk had nothing to eat,
1011:	чаршı̀а заклю̀чена,	the market closed,
1012:	҆и всѧ̀кїи́ хр͒тїáнинь и́̂маше ҅оу до̀мь сво́и́ тꙋрцы,	and every Christian had in his house Turks,
1013:	҆и ко́мꙋ дохо̀ждах ҆àзь на ҆оꙋ́мь да ми́ принесѐ нѧ́что ꙗ́̂стїе:	and who would think of me to bring some meal?
1014:	҆и тàмошнї҆и чл҃вцы нѐ са то̀лкова прáѯани да ҆имат ҆архїереà на по́честь,	and the local people are not used to have a bishop for a guest (lit. for honor).
1015:	да ҅ѡстáвим ꙗ́̂стїе́,	Let me leave meals be,
1016:	а̂мѝ мно́го днѝ ҆и без͛ хлѣ́бь ѡ̂стáнвах	but I was many days also without bread,
1017:	почто̀ ҆о́ныѧ тꙋ́рчин бе́ше сїромах	because that Turk was poor,
1018:	повы́ше кокꙋрꙋ́зны҆и хлѣ̀бь ꙗ̂дѧ́ха.	they ate mostly maize bread,
1019:	но ҅и́маше мáло ѕѐлїе ҆арме́а	there was yet some sauerkraut,
	а̂ дрꙋ̀го нѝщо.	but nothing else.
1020:	҆амѝ ко́лко ли страх и́̂мах да не́ и́̂ди нѧ́кои́ да мѧ́ скáжи,	But, now, how much fear I had, that somebody would tell about me!
1021:	поне(ж)е мно́го пари́ хо̀чеха да ҆и́щат ѿ мен́е,	Because they would want to demand a lot of money from me,
1022:	а̂ á̂зь като́ не и́̂мах, мни́ ми сѧ кáко ме ҆оубı̀ваха.	but it seems to me, as I did not have, they would be going to kill me.
1023:	҆И като́ си по҆и́до́ша ̂о́ны ҆излѧ̀зох ҅àзь ҆из͛ ҆оны҆и харем,	And when they went away, I left that harem,
1024:	҆и поидох ҅оу до́мь ҆епѵ́тропа моегѡ́:	and I went to my aide,
1025:	҆и не́ са помѝнаха три́ дни́,	and hardly three days passed,
1026:	чꙋ́ сѧ ҆из градо́ смꙋще́нїе голѧ́мое,	a great unrest was heard from the city,
1027:	҆и попи́тахме	and we asked:
1028:	що ѐ то̀;	ʺWhat is that?ʺ
1029:	реко́ша,	They said:
1030:	карџалı̀й те дойшле́ на крáи́ град҆о	ʺKirdzhalis came to the outskirts of the city,ʺ
1031:	҆и и́̂скат да вле́зат оу̀ град҆о непремѣ́нно.	ʺand they want to enter the city at all costs.ʺ
1032:	҆и гледàхме кади́ни ҆и хр͒тїàнскї҆и жены́	And we see both Turkish and Christian women,
1033:	всѧ̀каѧ но́си са͒ себѣ́ ҆изрѧ̀дниѧ веш̀ти сво́е	each of them carries her valuable things with her,
1034:	҆и плáчат	and they cry,
1035:	҆и бѣгат камто̀ тꙋ́рскаѧ крѣ́пкаѧ махал(а)	and they run towards the fortified Turkish quarter,
1036:	то̀и́ ча͒ востáна ҆епѵ́тропа ҆и же́на ҆егѡ́	in that moment the aide and his wife stood up,
1037:	҆оузѐха мало̀ ве́щи са͒ себѣ́ си	they took some things with themselves,
1038:	҆и побѣ́гна ѿ до́ма своегѡ́,	and they ran away from their house,
1039:	҆ами́ á̂зь кáмо да побѣ́гна;	but, now, where should I run?
1040:	совѣ́товаша ме нѧ̀кои́ чл҃вцы да пои́дꙋ оў ҆един хáнь	Some people advised me to go to one inn,
	що́ е ҆оуграден крѣ́пко кáменнꙋю стѣ́ною.	which is well fortified with a stony wall.
1041:	҆и́ма тáмо ҆и тꙋ̀рцы мно́го	There are also many Turks,

1047:	҆и поѝдох на бж҃игроб́скїа метох,	and I went to the monastery ground of the Holy Sepulcher,
1048:	҆и ми́рно проми́нахме стрàстныѧ се́дмицы,	and we peacefully spent the Passion Tide,
1049:	҆и на сáмыѧ пáсхꙋ слꙋжих лїтꙋргı̀ю	and on Easter I celebrated the liturgy,
1050:	҆и радвáхми сѧ,	and we rejoiced,
1051:	҅и на девѧ́тыи́ ча͒ по҆идо́хме на вече́рнѧ по ҅ѡбичáю	and at 9th hour, we went to (celebrate) the vespers, as usual,
1052:	като̀ наче́нахме цѣловáнїе са͒ х͛с воскр͒е, чꙋ́хме кáко са потрѐсе градо̀,	as we began the Easter greetings with ʺChrist is risenʺ, we heard that the city shook,
1053:	҆и вди́гна са ҆еди́нь о́̂б͛щыи́ гла͒ и́ ви́канїе,	and everywhere cry and shouting was hearded,
1054:	҆и що́ бѣ́ха ҆оу цр҃ква чл҃вцы вси́ поте́коха на во̀нь,	and the people, who were in the church, all ran outside,
1055:	҆ѡстàнах á̂зь сàмь вь цр҃кви ѡ̂бл́ечен са͒ ҆архїерѐѝскаѧ ҆ѡде́жда,	(and) I remained alone in the church, clothed in episcopal vestments,
1056:	чꙋ́еми ѿ вон ви́кь плàчь	we hear cries, weeping from the outside,
1057:	҆алá не знаем що ѐ то́ за голѧ́маѧ мо́лва,	but we donʹt know, what is that great unrest,
1058:	҆и не смѣим да ҆изле́зим ҆и да над҃ни́кним на во́нь	and we donʹt dare to go out and to look over (the wall) out,
1059:	почто̀ бе́ше цр҃ко́внаѧ ѡ̂грàда слáба	because the church wall was weak,
1060:	гле́да са ѿ всадѐ,	it is seen from everywhere,
1061:	҆и тои ча͒ излїѧ́ сѧ ѿ свы́ше ҆един грàдь като̀ о̀̂рѣхи	and in that moment fell from above a hail (big) as walnuts,
1062:	҆алá мáло держѐ	but it was short,
1063:	҆и преми́на,	and it passed,
1064:	тоги́ва прїи́де е̂дин сщ҃е́нникь оꙋ́ цр҃ква т	then a priest came to the church,
1065:	҆и сказá ми, как̀о прї҆ишлѐ- пазвàнскїѝ ха҆идꙋты̀	and he said, that Pazvantogluʹs haiduks came,
	ко́лко двѐ хїлѧ́ды	how many, two thousand?
	҆и стро̀шили по́рти и̂ врáта	and that they broke the gates,
	҆и ҆оу нáшеѧ метох конди́сали,	and that they camped at our monastery ground,
	҆и всѧ̀ мо́и́ ве́щи ҆оудержàли,	and that they stole all my things,
1066:	҆ами́ ҆áзь кáмо да пои́да	so, now where should I go?
1067:	замàѧх сѧ	I wondered.
1068:	тоги́ва ҆и́маше тáмо бегликчı́ѝ кѵр кон҃стан҃тин са͒ чофадар са͒ бостанџı́ѝ, ҆и до ·ѯ· дꙋ̀шы са͒ не́го пазаргеде́ни овчàри,	By then, there was the sheep tax collector kyr Konstantin with a servant, guards, and about 60 souls with him, trading shepherds,
1069:	прїишле́ бѣ́ха да ҆оузе́мат о́̂вци за бѐгликь по ҆обичáю,	they had come to take sheep for bey-tax, as usual,
1070:	и̂ пратих тогѡ̀ сщ҃енн҃ика до не́го,	and I sent that priest to him,

1072:	и̂ ҅оузѐха ми ѿ цр҃кви	and they took me from the church,
1073:	҆и приведо́ша ме на нѐговыѝ конàкь,	and they led me to his mansion,
1074:	҆и сѣдѧх тáмо, ·ѳı· дни,	and I sat there for 19 days,
1075:	҆и тáмо ҆и́маше ѿ пазвàнски т на конáкь	and even there were some of Pazvantogluʹs (men) in that mansion,
1076:	пїàны бѣ́ха	they were drunk,
1077:	҆и чи́нѧха- ѕло́,	and they did evil,
1078:	тогѡ̀ рáди ҆оузѐ дво́ица чл҃вцы ѿ ҆агá та им	so he took two men from their agha,
	що̀ бе́ше гошáницали- халѝль,	who was Gushants-Ali Halil,
1079:	тà сѣдѧ́ха тáмо са͒ на͒ ве́дно	so they sat there with us together,
1080:	хлѣ́бь ꙗ̂дѧ̀ха,	they ate bread,
1081:	дохо́ждаха ѿ во̀нь и̂ карџалı́ѝ,	kirdzhalis were coming from outside,
1082:	҆и á̂зь сѣдѧх ме́ждꙋ тѣ́хь	and I sat between them,
1083:	влáшка качꙋ̀ла ҅ѝмах на глáвꙋ мо́ю,	I had a Wallachian cap on my head,
1084:	зовѧ́ха ме ꙗ̂заџѝ стоѧ̀нь,	they called me Stojan the Grammarian,
1085:	не можах ни да че́та нѧ́що ни мо̀лба да сто́рѧ,	I could neither read anything, nor pray,
1086:	҆оу е̂дин дѐнь ре́че ми кон҃стан҃тин чорбаџи:	and, one day, chorbadzhi Konstantin said to me:

1102:	҆а нѐ ҅оу пꙋ́ть,	but not on the road,
1103:	и̂ по҆идохме до ҅ѝскре рѣ́ка,	and we reached the river Iskar,
1104:	҆а ҆о̀наѧ рѣ́ка без͛ ладїá нѐ са минꙋ́ва ни́какь,	but that river cannot be passed without a boat,
1105:	҆и́ма сел́о ко҆инлáри на срѣ́ща	there is the village of Koinlari on the other side,
1106:	вѝкаме	we shout,
1107:	нѐ са чꙋ́ва ѿ рѣ́чныѧ шꙋмѧ́щь,	one cannot here because of the sound of the river,
1108:	члв҃кь не́ са ҆ꙗвлѧ́еть ни́како	no man appears,
1109:	҆а ве́чер настàна	and the evening came,
1110:	дож̀дь ѝ̂деше,	rain was coming,
1111:	да пꙋ̀стим пꙋ̀шка не смеим да нѐ ҅и́ма ҅оу се́ло нѧ̀кои́ пазвàнскїи́ ха҆идꙋ́ты,	to fire a rifle, we dare not, as there may be some Pazvantogluʹs haiduks in the village,
1112:	какво́ да сторим	now, what should we do?
1113:	замáѧхми͒ (се)	We wondered,
1114:	хе́ле ви́дѣхме ҆едногѡ̀ говедáрѧ	and, here, we saw one wrangler,

1120:	҆а коне́ те преплáват го́ли:	and horses (have to) swim by themselves (lit. naked),
1121:	҆ами́ като̀ накáрахме коне т да преплꙋ́ват	so, as we forced the horses to swim through,
	не ли́ побѣ́гна назáдь ҆оу го́рꙋ е̂дин кон,	did not one of the horses run away into the forest?!
1122:	бж҃е мо̀и какво̀ да сто́рим	Now, o my God, what should we do?
1123:	претимнѐ,	It became dark,
1124:	҆ѡн҃ныѧ ко́не мѝнаха ѿ срѣ́ща	the (other) horses passed to the other side,
1125:	тоѧ̀ пои́де по го́рꙋ,	that one went into the forest,
1126:	҆оны ли да гле́дами	so should we watch the others?
1127:	то́гѡ ли да фáтиме,	Or should we go to search that one?
1128:	҆амѝ ҆онꙋ́ю смѐртнꙋю рѣ́кꙋ но́щем ҆оу т́емнос҃т кàко да прими́нем	But how can we cross that deadly river in the night, in darkness?
1129:	хо́чем вси́ да сѐ издáвим.	We would drown us all!
1130:	҆алà подадѐ бг҃ь	But God helped,
1131:	тà ҆о̀ныѧ ко́нь не по҆иде на дале́ко	so the horse did not go far away,
1132:	развàрна са	he came back,
1133:	҆и пои́де при ҅о́ныѧ ко̀не.	and he went to the other horses.
1134:	҆и като̀ ми́нахме ҆о́наѧ рѣ́ка	And as we passed that river,
	свѣ́тна ни мáло на ҆о̀чи,	we thought a bit (lit. a bit of light fell on our eyes)
1135:	почто̀ камто́ врàца то́лкова страх не ҆и́маши ѿ карџалı̀ѝ те.	for you donʹt have so much fear from Kirdzhalis towards Vratsa.
1136:	҆и по҆идо̀хме на врàца	And we went towards Vratsa,
1137:	҆и то̀ лѣ́то тàмо сѣдѧх до ст҃го дими́трїа,	and that summer I sat there until the (feast of) St. Demetrius
1138:	не смѣи́хь да ҆излѧза по во́нь ни́какь:	I did not dare to go outside anywhere,
1139:	҆и по ст҃áгѡ- димѝтрїа востáнах	and after the St. Demetrius, I stood up,
1140:	҆и пои̂дох на пле́вень,	and I went to Pleven,
1141:	҆и тáмо бѣ́ха пазвáнски т ха҅идꙋ́ти	and there were Pazvantogluʹs haiduks,
1142:	҆и сѣдѧх до ст҃гѡ нико́лаѧ	and I sat there until (the feast of) St. Nicholas,
1143:	҆и собрàха поп҃ви те мїрı̀а та.	and the priests collected the state tax,
1144:	послѣ́ вѝдѣхь кáко начѐнаха ҅о̀ны мно̀го да сѧ́ соби́рать на пле́вен,	Then I saw, that they (i.e. Pazvantogluʹs haiduks) began to assemble near Pleven,
1145:	оу̂боѧ̀х сѧ да мѧ́ не ҆оучи́нѧт нѧ̀кои́ ѕло̀.	I was afraid, that they would do me some evil.
1146:	и̂ востàнах ѿ пле́вень, вь лѣ́то ·1799· на декем мц͒а	And I stood up from Pleven in the year 1799 in the month of December,
1147:	҆и по҆идо́хь на нїко̀поль да прими́нем дꙋ̀навꙋ,	and I went to Nikopol to cross the Danube,
	҆и да пои́дем пáкь на влàшко,	and to go again to Wallachia,
1148:	҆алá дꙋ́навꙋ- като̀ бе́ше замерзналь ҆и ѿ две́ стрáны,	but, as Danube had frozen from both sides,
	тà не мо̀жаше да сá поми́не,	it was impossible to cross,
1149:	затовá сѣдѐхме ҆оꙋ́ нико̀поли шес҃т дни́,	thus we sat in Nikopol for six days
1150:	по̀слѣ чꙋ́хме кáко ҆и́ди оу нїко́полы- дїавꙋ̀рь и̂мáмь	afterwards we heard, that Giavur Imam marches towards Nikopol,
1151:	҆и ҆оубоѧ̀х се	and I became afraid,
1152:	҆и́ мно́го пари́ подáдꙋх	and I paid a lot of money,
1153:	и̂ принесо̀ха ни на дꙋ́навꙋ	and they ferried us across the Danube,
1154:	҆алá са͒ како́вь стрáхь	but with so much fear!
1155:	пробѝ сѧ лѣ́до	The ice boke,
1156:	҆и поть́на е̂дин ко̀нь	and one of the horses drowned,
1157:	҆и ҆оудàви сѧ,	and it was lost (lit. lost breath),
1158:	а̂ ҆о́ны́ѧ ко́не сверзáха	and other horses were bound,
1159:	҆и по лѣ́до ги на дь́ска привлѧ́коха.	and they pulled them on the ice on planks,
1160:	҆и́ доклѐ пои́дем на зи́мничи хоч̀ехме ѿ стꙋдь да помрѐми,	and until we reached Zimniča, we were going to die of cold,
1161:	влáшка зе́млѧ го́ла	the Wallachian land (is) empty,
1162:	не познáва сѧ ни пꙋ́ть ни мѣ́сто,	not a road, nor a place is known,
1163:	шес҃т час̀а е́̂сть	it is about six hours (long),
1164:	ѐдвам за трѝ дни́ пои̂дохме.	we made it hardly in three days.
1165:	Вь лѣ̀то ·1800· пак̀и сѧ под́игна во҆искá цр͒каѧ ве́рхь пазванџı̀а,	In the year 1800, the imperial army moved again against Pazvantoglu,
	мꙋрꙋ́зь беѝ бꙋкꙋре́шкї҆и ҆из влáшко,	Muruz Bey of Bucharest from Wallachia,
	҆а пашı̀ѝ ѿ тꙋ́рско,	and pashas from Turkey,

1167:	҆и́маше ҆един сꙋлтан на вербѝца се́ло.	There was a Sultan in (lit. of) the village of Verbitsa.
1168:	тà беше славен	He was famous, because he defeated the Germans (Austrians) at Giurgiu,
1169:	почто́ покори не́мцы те на гїꙋ́ргювь,
1170:	҆и спроти́ товá сѧ разго́рди	and because of that he became proud,
1171:	и̂ не хо́чеше да сá покорѧ́ва на вези́рю кат́о бе́ше на шꙋ́мен са͒ ҅оурдı̀а та тꙋ́рецкаѧ,	and he did not want to submit to the Vizier, when he was in Šumen with the Turkish army,
1172:	҆а вези́р повел̀е да мꙋ разсы̀пѧт палáты,	and the Vizier commanded his palace to be destroyed,
1173:	҆и ҅о́нь побѣ́гна ҅оу московı̀а.	and he (the Sultan) ran to Muscovy,
1174:	҆и тáмо сѣ́де шес҃т годи́ни	and he sat there for six years,
1175:	послѣ̀ прїи́де са͒ моско́вскаѧ рꙋ́ка на ц҃риград,	and then he came with the Muscovite hand (?) to Tsarigrad,
1176:	҆и повелѐ мꙋ ц҃рь пáки да си́ напрàви палàты свое́,	and the Emperor commanded him to built his palace again,
1177:	҆а о́нь като́ ѿхо́ждаше на верби́ца, соби́раше во҆иск҆а тꙋ́рцы хр͒тїáни,	and as he (the Sultan) went to Verbitsa, he was collecting an army (of) Turks (and) Christians,
1178:	҆и пои́де на ви́дин	and he moved to Vidin,
1179:	не знам що̀ хорат́иха са͒ пазванџı̀а.	I donʹt know, what they spoke about with Pazvantoglu,
1180:	҆алá ҆излѐзе р́ечь,	but a rumor came out,
	кáко са нагово́рили са͒ пазванџı̀а,	that they conspired with Pazvantoglu,
	сꙋлтáнꙋ да стàне цр҃ь,	the sultan to become the Emperor,
	҆а пазванџı̀а везир,	and Pazvantoglu his Vizier,
1181:	затовá ли за дрꙋ́го ли пак̀ь сѧ повди́гна воѝска вѐрхь вѝдин.	because of that or something else, the army moved again against Vidin.
1182:	҆и ҆áзь какво̀ да сто́рѧ	And, now, what should I do?
1183:	харашлѝк ми не ҅ѡстана,	I had no money (for tax?) left,
1184:	мїрı̀а ҆и́скать ѿ ме́не,	they want the state tax from me,

1191:	не подклонѧ́ваше глàвꙋ ни́комꙋ,	he did not submit his head to anyone,
1192:	҆а нáѝ вече́ на ҆оуггровлахı̀йскїа митрополит	and the least (lit. the most) to the Metropolite of Hungaro-Wallachia,
1193:	҆и о̀̂нь по нѧ́кои сꙋ̀дь бе́ше гѡ заклѝчил ҆оу затво̀рка,	and that one, by some court decision, had put him into prison,
1194:	҆а то́и́ по нѐговаѧ проти́вность що́ да ҅оучи́ни,	and he, by his quarrelsome characters, what would he do?
1195:	прати́ль чл҃вка на вѝдин	He was to send a man to Vidin,
1196:	и ҆ѡбѣщàль на пазванџı̀а четыри десѧт кесı̀и́ пари́ да гѡ ҅оучи́ни ҆архїерѐа на вѝдин,	and he was offering forty kese of money to make him a bishop of Vidin,
1197:	почто̀ пазванџı̀а ҆и́маше гнѣ́вь ҆и ненáвисть на вѝдинскаго ҆архїер́еа по нѧ́коѧ причѝна.	because Pazvantoglu had anger and hate towards the Bishop of Vidin for some reason.
1198:	҆о̀нїа каллїникь калꙋгер като́ знаѧ̀ше товá всѐ затовá	As that Kallinikos knew all about that,
	҆и пои́де на ви́дѝнь са͒ нѧ́коѧ ле́сть,	he went to Vidin by some intrigue,
1199:	҆и распади́ пазванџı̀а о́̂ныѧ а̂рхїере́а	and Pazvantoglu expelled that other bishop,

	доклѐ да прáтѧ ҆àзь чл҃вкь мо̀и́ на вѝдин,	until I sent my man to Vidin,
1210:	҆онь прати́ пазвáнскаѧ тескерѧ́ за ме́не	he sent the permit from Pazvantoglu
	са͒ мꙋбашир да мѧ оу̂зѐме да пои́да на ви́динь	with (his) bailiff to get me (lit. take me to go) to Vidin,
1211:	҆и поидох на видин	and I went to Vidin,
1212:	двà три́ мц͒а слꙋжах по цр҃кви те,	I served for two or three months in churches,
1213:	тàкѡ мꙋ пи́шеши ҆и тескерѧ́ та паш̀оваѧ,	thus it was written in the pashaʹs permit,

1217:	҆ами́ какво́ да сто́рѧ ҅àзь сїромах	Now, what should the poor me do?
1218:	ѕлѐ са верзàхь.	I bound up myself badly.
1219:	҆и сѣдѧх на ви́дин три́ годѝни:	And I sat in Vidin for three years.
1220:	҆ами́ що́ поте́глихь ҆àзь ѿ тогѡ́ каллїни́ка калꙋгерѧ	But what I suffered from that monk Kallinikos?
1221:	сѣдѧх при нѐгѡ като́ нѧ́кои́ послѣ́дныи́ слꙋ́га,	I sat there with him as a lowliest servant,
1222:	не хо̀чеше да мѧ́ знá҆и ни́какь за чл҃вка,	he did not want to treat (lit. know) me as a human,
1223:	҆а ҅ѡстав̀и за ҅архїере́а,	the less as a bishop!
1224:	бе́ше са͒ тꙋ̀рцы те са͒ пазвàнски те ха҆идꙋ́ти ве́дно,	He was a complice with the Turks, with Pazvantogluʹs haiduks,
1225:	҆и не смѣѧ́хь да продꙋ́мамь нѧщ̀о хорати́,	and I did not dare to say a word,
1226:	не пꙋ̀щаше мѧ ни́где да сѧ̀ прохо́дѧ,	they did not let me anywhere to go,
1227:	то̀кмо оу̂ ц҃рква	only to the church,
1228:	҅и то̀ са͒ нѧ́когѡ сщ҃е́нника,	and even there with some priest,
1229:	҆алá да мѧ̀ ҆и пꙋ́щаше	but even if he would let me,
	болѧ̀ха ме нозѣ́ те	my legs ached,
1230:	не мо́жахь да хо̀дѧ,	I could not walk,
1231:	вь ц҃рква все́ са͒ карꙋ́ца хо́дѧх,	I always went to the church with a cart,
1232:	и́ то̀ маи̂сере́ держà две́ години ҆и по̀ль,	and that siege (?) lasted for two and half years,
1233:	каќов ли стрáхь потеглих,	how much fear did I suffer!
1234:	҆и коли́ка ли ско̀рбь ҆и гри́жа ҅и́махь.	And how much sorrow and anxiety I had!
1235:	҆и поче́на са пàкь тре́тое маи̂сере́ на ви́дин,	And then the third siege of Vidin began,
1236:	҆алà ѿ дал́еко сѣдѧ̀ха,	but the (besiegers) sat far away,
1237:	на пл́евень сѣдѧ́ше плѧ́са пáша са͒ ·еı· хїлѧди ҆арнаꙋ́ти.	in Pleven, there was Plyasa Pasha with 15 thousand Arnauts,
1238:	҆а на белќовца сѣде́ше гюр͛џи́ пáша, са͒ толкова воиска:	and in Belkovets sat Gjurci Pasha with so many troops,
1239:	а ѿ влàшка землѧ́ мꙋрꙋ̀зь бе́и́, са͒ ҆ибраил назари́, ҆и а̂и̂ди́нь пашá, са͒ то́лкова воиска.	and, from Wallachia, Muruz Bey with Ibrahim Nazari and Aydin Pasha, with so many troops,
1240:	҆а пазвáнџı̀а ҆ѝмаше при себѣ карџалı̀и́ те	and Pazvantoglu had kirdzhalis by himself,
	що́ бѣ́ха на три́ бюлю́ка:	who were (divided to) three hosts,
1241:	манàфь ҅ибрахим са͒ дв́е- хїлѧди карџалı̀ѝ,	Manaf Ibrahim with two thousand kirdzhalis,
1242:	о̀̂нь порази́ плàсѧ пáша	he defeated Plyasa Pasha,
1243:	҆и ҆оузѐ мꙋ всѐ оу̀̂редь що̀ и́̂ма-ше	and he captured all the equipment he had had,
1244:	҆и принѐсе вс́е ҆оу ви́дин,	and he brought all of that to Vidin,
1245:	а плѧ́са пáша побѣ́гна где́ о́̂чи ви́дѧша,	but Plyasa Pasha ran where his eyes could see,
1246:	҆и при-ведо́ша ѿ во҆иска та мꙋ на вѝдин до хїлѧ̀да дꙋ́шы,	and they brought from his troops about a thousand souls to Vidin,
1247:	҆и даде ҆ѝмь пазванџı̀а по ҆един хлѣ́бь	and Pazvantoglu gave each a loaf of bread,
1248:	҆и распади́ ги.	and he sent them away.
1249:	҆а дрꙋ́гїи́ карџалı̀а фїли́бели карà мостàфа, ҆о́нь басти́са но́щем гюрџи́ пáша,	And the other kirdzhali, Filibeli Kara Mustafa, he ambushed Gjurci Pasha in the night,
1250:	҆и оꙋ́зѐ мꙋ все́ ҆оуре́дь	and he took all the equipment from him,
1251:	҆и прине́соха го на ви́динь.	and they brought it to Vidin.
1252:	҆и дрꙋ́гї҅и бюлю́кь бàши бе́ше гꙋшáницали халѝль,	And another captain was Gushants-Ali Halil,
1253:	ı̂ ҆ѡще мно̀го таки́ва ха҆идꙋти пазванџı̀и́скїи́ стоѧ́ха крѣ́пко проти́во цр͒каѧ воѝсќа,	and many other such Pazvantogluʹs haiduks staunchly withstood the imperial army,
1254:	҆и не дáдоха ҆и́мь да приближáть до вѝдин блѝзꙋ.	and they did not allow them to get closer to Vidin.
1255:	и̂ нàи́ послѣ́ са͒ пазвáнское позволе́нїе-	And, finally, with Pazvantogluʹs permission,
	ми́наха карџалı́ѝ те на влàшко	the kirdzhalis moved against Wallachia,
1256:	и̂ изгори́ха країѡвꙋ ҆и селá,	and they burned down Craiova and (adjacent) villages,
1257:	҆и мног̀о чл҃вцы ҆из͛бı̀ша,	and they killed many people,
1258:	тоги́ва побѣ́гна бе́ѧ михáль во́да ҆оу брáшо́вь, ҆и митрополи́тꙋ- ҅оуггровлахı̀и́скїи́, ҆и вси́ боѧ̀ри, ҆и е̂пк͒пи влáшкїи́ ѿ стрáхь карџїлı̀ѝскїѝ.	then Michael Vodă Bey ran to Brašov, and (with him) the Metropolite of Hungaro-Wallachia, and all the boyars and bishops of Wallachia, because of the fear of kirdzhalis.
1259:	҆и тáкѡ оучѝниша ми́рь са͒ пазванџı́а.	And thus they made peace with Pazvantoglu.
1260:	҆и тогѝва прати́ пазванџı̀а тогѡ́ каллїни́ка на бокореш са͒ пет͛ десѧ́ть тꙋ́рцы на ҆еψѵлàнти беѧ́ на бокорѐшь	And then, Pazvantoglu sent this Kallinikos to Bucharest with fifty Turks to Ypsilanti Bey,
1261:	҆и хїротони́саха го вѝдинскїи́ ҆архїере́а са͒ бѐ҆иское позволе́нїе.	and they appointed him a Bishop of Vidin with the permission of the bey.
1262:	҆и като́ прїиде на ви́дин	And as he came to Vidin,
	тоги́ва ҅и ҅азь слѣ́дь ҆еди́нь мц͒ь по҅ѝскахь позволе́нїе да сѝ пои́да на ҆епархı́ѧ та слѣдь три́ годѝни.	then, one month later, also I asked for a permission to go to my eparchy after three years.
1263:	҆алá карџалı̀҅и те бѣ́ха по ҆епархı́а моѧ́	However, kirdzhalis were still all around my eparchy,
1264:	тà не бы́ ми возмо̀жно да пои́да тáмо,	so it was not possible for me to go there,
1265:	҆и намы́слихь да пои́да на країѡ̀вꙋ да посѣдѧ̀ тáмо,	and I thought to go to Craiova to sit there a bit,
1266:	почто́ ми бе́ше мно̀го дотѐгнало ѿ тоѧ̀ ви́динь,	because I was fed up by that Vidin a lot,
1267:	҆и глѐдах е̂дин ча͒ по ско́ро да сà кортолисам ѿ тáмо.	and I watched for an opportunity to save myself from thre as soon as possible.
1268:	҆и сѣдѧх на країѡ́вꙋ до два десѧт днѝ,	And I sat in Craiova for twenty days,
1269:	҆и мно́го ми почтѐнїе оу̂чи́ни ка҅имакáнꙋ що́ беш костаќи караџе́.	and I was greatly honored by the deputy governor, Kostaki Karaca.
1270:	҆и като̀ сѣдѧх на країѡ̀вꙋ,	And as I sat in Craiova,
	҅оу ҆едѝнь де́нь прїи́де вѣ́сть, как̀о ̂и́дать карџалı́и́ те на країѡ̀вꙋ,	one day a message came, that kirdzhalis are moving on Craiova,
1271:	таѧ̀ но́щь побѣ́гна каи̂макàнꙋ ѿ країѡ̀вꙋ,	on that night the deputy governor fled from Craiova,
	и̂ боѧ́ры ҆и терго́вцы, ҆и калꙋ́геры ҆и поп҃ве,	and also the boyars, and merchants, and monks, and priests,
1272:	҅ѡстáнах ҅áзь сàмь ҅оу е̂пк͒пı́ѧ та,	I remained alone at the bishopric,
1273:	҆и ҆áзь хо́чахь- да побѣ́гна,	and I wanted to flee as well,
1274:	҆алà ко̀ла не можих да наѝда,	but I could not find a cart,
1275:	тà каковь стрàхь поте́глихь ҅и тàмо,	so, now, how much fear did I suffer!
1276:	҆алà не прїидо́ша,	But they did not come,
1277:	по́слѣ са развáрнаха вси́	afterwards everybody returned,
1278:	и̂ до҆идо̀ха си на до́мы сво́е.	and they came back to their houses.
1279:	҅и ҆áзь като̀ вѝдѣхь кàко карџалı̀ѝ те не стáнват ѿ епархı̀а та моѧ́, востáнӑхь ѿ країѡ́вꙋ,	And then, as I saw that kirdzhalis are not going away from my eparchy, I stood up from Craiova,
1280:	и̂ по҆идо́хь на бокореш при дѣцá та,	and I went to Bucharest to my children,
1281:	почто̀ тáмо четѧ́ха е̂пѵстїмı̀а на бе́ѝска та ҅академı̀а.	because they studied sciences at the Bey Academy,
1282:	҆и по҆идохь	and I came there (went?),
1283:	҆и поклони́х сѧ ст҃о́мꙋ митрополи́тꙋ- оу̂ггровлахı̀и́скомꙋ	and I paid respect to the holy Metropolite of Hungaro-Wallachia,
	що̀ бѐше на и́̂мѧ досиѳе́й, чл҃вкь стàрь лѣ̀тами оу̂че́нь ҆и вь мꙋ̀дрости наказан,	who was called Dositheos, a man old by years, educated, and raised in wisdom,
1284:	҆о̀нь мѧ прїѧ̀ любе́зно,	he welcomed me nicely,
1285:	҆и завѐде мѧ при бѐѧ	and he brought me to the bey,
	що́ беш Кон҃стан҃тин вои̂во́да ı̂ψѵлàнти,	who was Constantine voivode Ypsilanti,
	҆и при нѧ̀кои боѧ̀ры,	and to some boyars,
1286:	и̂ сказà ҅и́мь кáко смь- сѣдѧ̀ль на вѝдин три́ годѝни,	and he told them about how I sat in Vidin for three years,
	҆и тол̀ико нꙋ̀жда ҆и ско́рбь що̀ смь поте́глиль.	and how much stress and sorrow I had suffered.
1287:	҆и призов́а ме на митрополı̀а та	And he invited me to the metropolitan see,
1288:	и̂ дàде ми келı̀а да сѣдѧ̀ тáмо при негѡ́,	and he gave me a cell to sit there with him,
	҆и на всѧ́кїи́ де́нь да бꙋ̀дꙋ на трапѐза нѐговаѧ.	and to be every day at his dining table.
1289:	҆и ҅áзь мꙋ сказах все́ моѧ́ нꙋ́жда:	And I told him all what was stressing me:
1290:	кáко мѧ ҆изгабо́саха ҆испе́рва	how they deceived me in the beginning,
1291:	҆и натовàриха мѧ е̂пархиа та скꙋ̀па- за пе́т десѧт ҆и пѧ́ть кесı̀ѝ,	and gave me a costly eparchy of fifty-five kese,
1292:	҆и четы́ри годи́ни не́ с͛мь хо̀диль на е̂пархı̀а та си	and that I did not go to my eparchy for four years,
1293:	нито̀ смь ҆оузе́ль ҆еднá парá,	I did not take a single coin,
1294:	нито́ смь дáль мїрı̀а, ни фа҆идá за тı́ѧ парѝ,	nor did I pay (lit. give) state tax, nor interest, for that money,
1295:	та сѧ̀ стàнали бо̀рчь вы̀ше ѿ ос͛мь десѧт кесı̀й,	so they created a debt of more than eighty kese,
1296:	҆апархı̀а та сѧ разсы́па	the eparchy fell apart,
1297:	селá не ҆ѡстáнаха	the villages did not remain standing,
1298:	҆изгори́ха ги карџалı̀и́ те ҆и пазвàнски те хаи̂дꙋты,	kirdzhalis and Pazvantogluʹs haiduks burned them down,
1299:	чл҃вцы са раз͛бѣ́гоха по влáшко, ҆и по дрꙋ́гїи́ стрáны,	people ran away to Wallachia and other countries,
1300:	҆а сѵнодь не вѣрꙋ́ва	but the Synod does not believe,
1301:	҆ищ́и всѐ рàвно.	(it?) wants (the money?) all the same.
1302:	҆и не́ е возмо́жно да ѝзлѧ́за на главà са͒ таѧ̀ ҆епархı̀а, ҆и са͒ тоѧ́ до́лгь:	And (that) it is impossible to go out with a head (on my neck?) with such an eparchy and debt.
1303:	и̂ (а̂џїдйса) ҆онь ме оу̂щӗдри́,	And he spared (pitied) me,
1304:	҆и помо́ли сѧ на бе́ѧ да мѧ̀ ҆извàди ѿ сѵ̀нодь. паре́ти͒	and he asked the bey to get me a letter of dismissal from the Synod,
	сиреч ѡ̂стàвка	that is, a resignation,
	да бꙋ̀дꙋ свобо̀ден ѿ таѧ̀ е̂пархı̀а,	so that I would be freed from that eparchy,
1305:	҆и бе́ѧ бг҃ь да го́ подари́ многолѣтс͛твїе послꙋ́ша го,	and the bey, may God grant him many years, listened to him,
1306:	҆и прати́ на сѵ̀нодь	and he sent (the request) to the Synod,
1307:	҆и принѐсе ми писáнїе ѡ̂стави́телное,	and he brought me the letter of dismissal,
1308:	҆и свободи́х сѧ ѿ тı́е стрàхове, и ѿ тı̀е вре́менныѧ нꙋ̀жды.	and I freed myself from those fears, and those temporary stress.
1309:	҅и́мам ҆обáче е̂днá ско̀рбь	But I still have one sorrow,
1310:	҆и бою́ сѧ ѿ бг҃а да мѧ́ не сꙋ́ди бг҃ь	and I do fear God to not judge me,
1311:	като́ оу̂зех ҅áзь ҆оное пáствꙋ на рàмена мо́ѧ	as I took that shepherd service and left it,
1312:	҆и ѡ̂стàвих го,
1313:	но̀ пàки надѣ́ю сѧ на бг҃а все мл͒ти́ваго	but I also do hope in God the Most Merciful,
1314:	кàко гѡ не ҆ѡстáвих (зарад) почивàнїе мо́е,	for I did not abandon it for my leisure,
1315:	но̀ ѿ голѧ̀маѧ нꙋ́жда,	but because of a great stress,
1316:	҆и ѿ те́шкїи́ до́лгь що мѧ́- натовáриха,	and because of the heavy debt, which they had put on me,
	҆и що̀ не вѣ́рꙋват кáко са е разсы̀паль свѣто́,	and also those (?), who do not believe that the world is broken,
	҆а нáи́ мно́го ҆о́наѧ стрáна що е́ бли́зꙋ до ви́дин	and, most of all, that country around Vidin,
	що ѐ живѐлище варвáрское ҆и хаи̂дꙋ́тское.	which is a spawning ground of barbarians and haiduks.
1317:	Затовá сѧ трꙋ̀дѧ ҆и ҆àзь сеги́ дѐнем ҆и но́щем	Because of this I work now by day and night,
	да и̂спи́ша нѧ́колико кни́ги по нáшемꙋ бо́лгарскомꙋ ҅ꙗзы́кꙋ,	to write a couple of books in our Bulgarian language,
	тà ҆ако не бы̀ возмо́жно мене́ да сказꙋвам ҆и́мь са͒ ҆оустá мо́ѧ да чꙋ́ѧть ѿ менѐ грѣ́шнаго нѧ́кои́ полѐзное поуч́енїе,	so that, even if it is impossible to tell them with my mouth for them to listen some helpful teaching from the sinful me,
	҆а тı́е́ да прочетꙋ́ть писàнїе моѐ	they could at least read (it in) my writing,
	҆и да оу̂ползꙋ́ет сѧ,	and that they would have use of it,
	҆и за мене́ не досто҆и́нагѡ- бг҃а да мо́лѧть	and may they pray for the unworthy myself
	невѣ́жество моѐ ҆испрáвити,	to improve my lack of wisdom,
	҆и трꙋди́вшаго сѧ проще́нїе- спод҃обѝти,	and to make the one having worked worthy of forgiveness,
	да бы̀ полꙋчи́ти и нам де́сных стоѧ̀нїих вь ден стрàшнаго воздаѧ́нїѧ.	so that it we would receive the place on the right on the Day of terrible Retribution.
1318:	҆ами́нь.	Amen.
1319:	сїѐ мы́ оу̂се́рдно вам желаем,	And this is what I wish for you with all my heart,
1320:	҆и вы̀ трꙋди́вшемꙋ сѧ бл҃гонак͛ло́ннены бꙋдѝте.	and that you would be inclined well towards the one for his work,
