7:	što è tïjà stórila dobrôdě´telь	what goodness she did on the Earth
	na zemlja na epívát'sko mě´sto,	in the land of the town of Epibates
	i na trákïisko,	and in the Thracian (land)
	i na trь´novь,	and in Tarnovo
	i na mísïa,	and in Moesia
	i na dal'máti,	and in Dalmatia
	i nè tь´kmo po tïja mě´sta,	and not merely in those lands
	amì i po síč'ki svě´tь.	but all over the world?
8:	detô nášь umь ne móže da dostígne,	our mind cannot reach there
	ilì ezýkь nášь da iskáže síč'ko to njéino čjúdo, i dobrô, i pos, i slь´zy.	or our language cannot tell of all her miracles and goodness and fasting and tears
9:	amì tь´kmo kól'koto nášь úmь postígnь,	but only as much as our mind could comprehend
10:	i napísax azь eѵ'tímïe patrïár'xь trь´nov'skyʺ, štô znajax.	and so I, Euthymius, Patriarch of Tъrnovo, wrote what I knew

12:	Tázi staa i prpodóbna pét'ka bě´še wt mě´sto epiváti	that Saint and Reverend Petka was from the land of Epibates
13:	wcь njéinь, i máika ì bě´xa dobrỳ i blgočь´stivy,	her father and her mother were good and pious
14:	i xóděxa po bžïi zapovědь	and they lived (ʺwalkedʺ) according to Divine Commandment(s)
15:	mlstínja číněxa,	(they) performed deeds of mercy
16:	i drúgy dóbryni bě´xa u tě´x	and (also) other good deeds were (done) by them
17:	i rodíxa tъ´zi čísta i xva golubica i dvca.	and they gave birth to this pure, Christ's dove and maiden
18:	i rodíxa i drúgo múž'ko, íme to mu ev'tímïe,	and they gave birth also to another male (child), his name (was) Euthymius
	štò bŷ nápokonь na mádïtь epskpь.	who finally became the bishop of Madytos
19:	I naúčixa gy na strax bžïi, i na zákon' dobrě`	and (the parents) tought them to fear God and His law (ʺthe fear of God and the lawʺ) well
20:	i prěstávixa se.	and they died (ʺpresented themselvesʺ, i.e. to God)
21:	i wstà staa pet'ka, sъs' bráta sî ev'tímïa detô bŷ epskpь na madítь,	and St. Petka remained with her brother Euthymius, who became the bishop of Madytos
22:	i tói mnw^go čjúdo pokaza támo.	and he did many miracles there
23:	zaštô bě´še i tóì prosvě´tilь sъs' póstь i mnw^go dobrynì.	because he had shone with his fasting and many good deeds as well (?)
24:	zatovà se i post҃ì.	for that reason he was canonized
25:	i négovy, móšti, i do dnéska čjúdno iscěljénïe čínětь.	and his relics cause a lot of miraculous healing until today
26:	I staa pét'ka, wt katô pogrébe rodítelje svoì, wtrědí gy dobrě`.	and St. Petka, since she buried her parents, she gave them their due well
27:	Togázi započè pos i metánïe i bdě´nïe,	then she began with fasting, and meditation, and staying awake
28:	i porévna ĭ se katô apslьskyʺ zakon'.	and it came to her mind (ʺit wanted to herʺ) as an apostolic law
29:	i na zemlja bez' postélja légnuvaše.	and she laid herself on the ground without a bed
30:	I wt túka pákь i seʺ isplь´ni srdcé to na míslь bžstvnaa	and then her heart was filled by a divine thought

31:	i pobě´gna wt támo,	and she ran from there
32:	i wtidè na pústynja,	and went to the desert
33:	i támo prěbývaše aggl'skyi čínь.	and an angelic host lived there
34:	i podražà i katô ilïa, ilì katô ıoánnь krstlja,	and (it?) followed her example as (if she were) Elijah or (ʺasʺ) John the Baptist
	pos, i bdě´nïe i metnïe i slъ´zy.	(with) fasting, staying awake, meditation and tears
35:	stúdь i pékь, síč'ko trьpě´še.	cold and heat - she endured everything
36:	i vъkúsjuvaše trěvà mě´sto jastïe.	and ate grass instead of food
	i toʺ po mál'ko ná večerь	and (even) that (only) a little in the evening
37:	i mlba neprěstánno číněše.	and she prayed (ʺdid prayerʺ) perpetually
38:	i nìčtô da imaše míslь za mírь,	and she wouldn't have a thought about the world (?)
	ilì za dobrà wdéžda da se wblěčè.	nor about good clothes to wear
	ilì za dómь i za stóka, i za imánïe.	nor about a house and goods and wealth
39:	amì tь´k'mo ꙫčí te i bě´xa slь´zy naplь´njeni i mlba na ba.	but only her eyes were filled by tears and prayers to God
40:	i síč'ka mýslь bě´še i ı nadéžda na ga ba.	and all of her thoughts and hope were of the Lord God
41:	i pomýsljuvaše za vtóro prišь´stvïe za bžïe súdь.	and she thought about the Second Coming, about the Divine Judgment
	i kákь da si ukrasì dšь´ ta, da srě´št'ne xa ba sъ světíl'nikь ukrasénь.	and how to decorate her soul, to meet Christ the God with a decorated (prepared) lamp
	i kak'vô dobrô da stóri,	and what good deed should she do
	da čjúe togázi glas krót'kь wt ga ba.	to hear that meek voice of the Lord God
	i kákь da sì isplь´ni svě´til'nikь sъs' máslo	and how to fill the lamp with oil
	da ulě´ze sъs' múdry te děvíci vъ rái,	to enter the Paradise with the wise maidens
	da se nasýti krasota ráiskaa, i xúbostь i svě´tlo.	to satisfy herself with the heavenly glory and (the) beauty and (the) light
	i pě´sni aggl'sky.	and (the) angelic songs
42:	tь´k'mo za tovà iʺ bě´še mýslь,	her thoughts were (directed) only for that
43:	i tvrь´dě tьgúvaše sъ srdce to sî. kákь da polúči onovà dobrô.	and she yearned powerfully in her heart how to receive that boon
44:	I takà prováždaše svoì živótь po wnъ´zi pústynja za mnw^go vrě´mê.	and thus she lived her life on that desert for a long time
45:	a lukávyi dïávolь ne prěstánuvaše da jù pláši.	but the evil Devil didn't cease to frighten her
46:	i mnw^go pъ´ti seʺ prětváraše katô źvěrь strášnь,	and many times (he) changed himself to a terrible beast
	davnô bŷ jù uplašilь da ostávi pústynja.	to frighten her (and thus force her) to leave the desert
47:	àmi staa pét'ka imáše ba pomóštnika.	but St. Petka had God (as a) helper
48:	i ne prěstánuvaxa ì slь´zi wt ꙫčí te.	and the tears didn't stop (to flow) from her eyes
49:	i síč'ka xýtros dïávol'skaa isčéznuvaše wt njéina ta mlba	and all the devilish cunning was vain because of (ʺdisappeared fromʺ) her prayer
50:	Tak'vъ´zi síla bě´še dobýla wt ba.	such a power she had acquired from God
51:	i tь´i se bě´še podkánila,	and thus she had decided to live
52:	makárь da bě´še ženâ	altough she was a woman
53:	àmì bě´še isplь´njena dxa stgo.	but she was filled (by the) Holy Spirit
54:	i bě´gaše wt njéa síla dïavol'ska	and the devilish force ran away from her
55:	i isčéznuvaše katô dýmь.	and disappeared as a smoke.
56:	dvdь crь. za tak'vizi žény prrokúvaše,	King David prophesized about such women

58:	vъždelě´etь crь dóbrotě tvoeì.	ʺLet the king be enthralled by your beautyʺ
59:	i takà staa pét'ka sъs' golě´mь pos prěbŷ mnw^go godíny vъ pústinja	and thus lived St. Petka for many years in the desert greatly fasting
60:	I vъ ednà nóštь katô	and (ʺinʺ) one night
	si číněše mól'ba i metánïe.	as she was doing her prayers and meditation
	i rucě te sî vdígaše nagórě i pláčěše.	and she raised her hands high and wept
	i náprasno vidě` bžst´vno vidě´nïe	and suddenly she saw a divine apparition
61:	edínь agglь i seʺ javì katô ně´koi mládь mom'kь.	an angel appeared to her as a young boy
62:	i svě´ti, katô svěštь.	and (he) shined as a candle
63:	i réče éi.	and he said to her:
64:	da wstávišь pústynja ta,	ʺ(you should) leave the desertʺ
65:	i idì sî pákь nazádь na tvoè wtčьstvo.	ʺand go back to your homelandʺ
66:	zaštô támo tyʺ podobáe (da) sî wstávišь těló to.	ʺbecause it is good for you to leave your body thereʺ
67:	a dšá ta ti šteʺ (da) búde na krásnyi i ne veštestь´vnyi rái.	ʺand your soul shall be in the beautiful and immaterial Paradiseʺ
68:	Katô (ví)dě staa pétka tovà vidě´nie, i čju tïjá d(umì).	as St. Petka saw this apparition and heard those words
	razumě` če è wt ba tovà vidě´nïe	she understood, that this apparition was from God
69:	i poznà (čï) štè da se prěstávi skóro,	and she found out that she will die soon
70:	i zaraduva se	and she was glad
71:	i grï(ž)ěše se	and she worried:
72:	kak' sî ostávě pústynja ta.	ʺhow can I leave the desert?ʺ
73:	zašt(o) ne móže níšto drúgo da wčísti člku dš(a) (ta), katô pustynja.	because nothing else can purify the human soul as a desert
74:	I togazì staa pet'ka katô čjû w´n'zi glàs,	and then, as St. Petka heard that voice
	i da i sè ne ště´še.	even though she didn't want
	à tïja w´stávi wnь´zi pústynja.	she left that desert
75:	I poidè prь´věnь na cárigrádь,	and first she went to Tsarigrad
76:	i ulě´ze u crkva xva.	and entered the church of Christ
77:	i mlba neprěstánno číněše.	and she prayed (ʺdid prayerʺ) perpetually
78:	kak' da iskáže člkь tól'kozi metánïa i póklony i slь´zy	how could one describe so many kneelings and meditation and tears
79:	i síč'ki dnì i nóšti na bdě´nïe, bě´še.	and she was awake for all the days and nights
80:	i pláčaše i tьgùvaše za pústynja ta.	and she wept and craved for the desert
81:	i wbydè sič'ky crkvi, katô ednà pčelà rabótnaa	and she visited all the churches as a diligent bee
	štô w´b'xodi síč'ki cvě´toově prolě´tny.	which visits all the vernal flowers
82:	i poide u crkva prstě´i bci, čtô sè zovè vlaxérna.	and (then) she went to (the) church of most-holy Mother of God which is called Blachernae
83:	i támo pripáde na ikóna prstěi bci	and there she came (ʺfellʺ?) to the icon of most-holy Mother of God
84:	i slь´zi wt ꙫči te sî mnw^go izlïă.	and she poured a lot of tears from her eyes
85:	i dúmaše i mljaše se bci.	and she said and prayed to the Mother of God:
86:	Tébě` vldčce što sî na síč'ki svě´tь,	ʺUpon yourself, o Lady (ʺwhich isʺ) of the whole worldʺ
	i porodíla esì ga ba.	ʺand who gave birth to Lord Godʺ
	azь móì živótь ú tébe w´stávix.	ʺto yourself I dedicated (ʺleftʺ) my lifeʺ
87:	i na tebě` se nadě´ja da mê pomíluvašь.	ʺand in yourself I hope that you have mercy upon meʺ
88:	i ne dě´ĭ se gnusì wt méne štô sъm tvoà robýnja.	ʺdon't turn away in disgust from me, your servantʺ
89:	zaštô í ázь wt mládostь, tvoému snu poslědovax	ʺbecause I followed your son and prayed since my youthʺ
90:	i mlju se.	ʺand I pray (you)ʺ
91:	i tyʺ znáešь dvce móe to žén'sko jesstvo i móa slábostь.	ʺand you know, o Virgin, my womanly nature and my weaknessʺ
	što è na móa ta dša oznóba.	ʺwhich worries my soulʺ (ʺwhich is my soul's worryʺ)
92:	àmì i tyʺ staa bce,	ʺbut you, o St Mother of Godʺ
	tyʺ mi budì pomóštnica.	ʺyou be my helperʺ
93:	zaštô ósvě´nь tébe na drúgo mě´sto nadežda ne ĭmam.	ʺbecause I have no hope at another place than by yourselfʺ
94:	amì tyʺ mi budì nastávnica	ʺbut you be my teacherʺ
	da mê nastávišь na dobrô i na pokaánïe	ʺso that you leads me to the goodness and remorseʺ
95:	tyʺ da mê oúpázišь wt síč'ko zloʺ.	ʺ(so that) you shall protect me from all evilʺ
96:	zaštô kogà bě´x vъ pústynja, tébe ímax pomoštnica.	ʺbecause I had yourself as my helper as I was in (the) desertʺ
97:	à segà sè vrь´nax vъ mírь.	ʺbut now I have returned into (the) worldʺ
98:	àmì pà´kь i segà mê učjúvai i upazì,	ʺbut now, hear and protect me againʺ
99:	i pomóštnica mi budì,	ʺand be my helperʺ
100:	i pokrŷi mê wt sič'ko zloʺ.	ʺand cover me from all evilʺ
101:	I tovà se pomóli,	and thus she prayed
102:	i plakà wt síč'ko srdce.	and wept from all heart
103:	I izlě´ze,	and she left
104:	i trь`gna da íde na svóe to sî wtčьstvo.	and went (ʺto goʺ) to her (ʺownʺ) homeland
105:	i doĭdè, do epiváti čtô bě´še néino wtčьstvo.	and came to Epibates, which was her homeland
106:	i prěbŷ tamô vrě´me ne málo,	and stayed there for quite some time
107:	i níkoi ne poznávaše jù.	and nobody recognized her
108:	i támo pos metnïe bdě´nïe,	and there (she did much) fasting, meditation (and) staying awake
	kói móže iskáza.	who could tell (how much?)
109:	Vrě´me ně´koe promína se,	some time passed
110:	i poznà čê štè da se prěstávi.	and she understood that she will die (soon)
111:	i stóri sî mlba na ba,	and she gave (ʺdid herʺ) a prayer to God
112:	i rče sъ slъzy.	and said with tears:
113:	Člkoljúb'če vldko,	ʺo Lord, Lover of humansʺ
	da nè ostávišь méne štô sъ´mь rába tvoà,	ʺdo not leave me, (who am) your servantʺ
	detô sъ´mь radì íme tvoè wstávila síč'ko.	ʺwho has left everything for your nameʺ
114:	i k tebě` pribě´gnax.	ʺand to yourself I ranʺ
115:	àmì gi be móĭ, povelì ágglu, mír'no	ʺbut, my Lord God, give a calm command to an angelʺ
	da mî prïémlje dšъ´ ta.	ʺto receive my soulʺ
116:	i da mî ne búde zabránjeno da ulě´za na tvoè crstvo, wt ne čísty i skvrь`ny běswve,	ʺand that I wouldn't be barred from entering your kingdom by unpure and tainted demonsʺ
117:	ami mê spodobì bez' strax da stánъ^ prěd tvói strášnyi prěstólь.	ʺbut make me worthy to stand without fear before your awesome throneʺ
118:	oti sî blsvénь gi vь vě´ky	ʺbecause you are blessed, o Lord, in eternityʺ

120:	I tová se pomóli,	and thus she prayed
121:	i tója čas prědáde si dšь ta bu.	and in that moment she turned her soul over to God
122:	i těló to iʺ pogréboxa ně´koi xrtïáne,	and some Christians buried her body
123:	i ne pozná jà nìkoi, dogdè i pogréboxa jù.	and no one knew her, as they buried her
124:	nì znájaxa jù. wt kydě` běʺ došlà.	nor they knew where she had come from
125:	I takà provódi dnì te svoì túka ná zemlja.	and thus she passed her days here on the Earth
126:	à támo naidè golě´mь pokói.	and there she found peace
127:	A`mì i túka gь bь ne ostávi ę`, da eè za mnw^go dnì sъkrŷena ná zemlja,	but even here, Lord God wouldn't leave her hidden in the Earth for long
	i da è bez' pámetь njéino to čístoe i stoè tě´lo.	to leave her pure and holy body to remain without rememberance
128:	àmì pokáza čjúdo dívno zaradì njéiny te stýe móšti.	but he showed a miracle on her holy relics
129:	Ně´koi póstnikь imáše támo	there was a hermit
130:	na stlъ´pь prěbývaše,	he lived on a pillar
131:	i pósteše se blízu pri w´novà mě´sto gdeʺto e býlь grôbь stě´i pétki.	and he fasted near the site of the St. Petka's grave
132:	I slučí se tà umrě` ně´koi korábnikь,	and it came to pass, a sailor died
133:	i frьlíxa go támo blízu pri w´n'zi stlъ´pь.	and they threw him there, close to that pillar
134:	i počè da isxódi smràdь wt njégo zlьʺ,	and a terrible stench started to come out from him
	kól'koto vekjè ne móžaše támo da pomíne člkь wt zlaʺ miriz'mà.	so much that one couldn't pass by because of the stench
135:	záednô i w´n'zi stlь´pnikь vekjè ne možè da trь´pì w´n'zi smràdь.	neither the stylite could suffer that stench
136:	amì slě´ze wt wn'zi stlъ´pь,	so he climbed down from the pillar
137:	i naidé člci	and he found some men
138:	i povelě` ímь da iskopájutь trápь golě´m,	and he commanded them to dig a big hole
	da túretь onovà tělô. čtô smrьdě`še.	to throw that stinking body (down there)
139:	I wnïa člci poslúšaxa w´nogózi póstnika.	and those people obeyed the hermit
140:	i poidóxa támo	and they went there
141:	i zéxa da kopájutь	and started to dig
142:	i naidóxa těló to stěi pétky cě´lo i xùbavo	and they found the body of St. Petka, healthy and beautiful
143:	i mirizmà xúbava kól'koto navívaše, tázi miriz'mà na w´n'zi smràdь	and how (her) beautiful scent covered the odor of that stench!
144:	I wnïa člci bě´xa glúpavy i ne razúmny,	and those people were dumb and irrational
145:	i ne mogóxa da sê usě´tetь za onovà stoè tě´lo.	and they couldn't understand that (it was a) holy body
146:	zaštô i nìkoi ne znáaše če è támo pogrébena staa pét'ka,	because nobody knew that St. Petka was buried there
147:	óti bě´še o dávna bỳla pogrébena.	because she was buried since long
148:	àmi se mnw^go čjudíxa, kákь da stóretь.	and they wondered a lot what should they do
149:	i rékoxa sî méždu sebě`	and they said to each other:
150:	kói pákь da kopáe na drúgo mě´sto,	ʺwho would dig elsewhereʺ
151:	àmi è tuka tóizi grôbь dósta širókь i glьbókь,	ʺthis grave here is wide and deep enoughʺ
152:	da túrimê, i onázi mrь`ša da nè smrьdì,	ʺlet's throw that corpse (here) as well, so that it doesn't stinkʺ
153:	à tô ako búdje tovà sto tělô. bь šté go izvádi.	ʺand if it would be a holy body, God will take it outʺ
154:	i zarinaxa wnъ´zi mrь`ša támô pri stôe onovà tělô.	and they buried that corpse there next to that holy body
155:	i razydóxa se po domá si.	and they all went home
156:	I wt tě´x ně´koi člkь gew´r'gïe, ime to mu xrtïáninь dóbrь,	one of them (was) a certain Georgi, a good Christian
157:	i tói katô si poidè domâ si. i po večrě nápokónь, stъnъ^ da se pomlì bu	and as he also went home and dined, he stood up to pray to God
	kato sî číněše sě´kogy mlba mnw^go.	as he always did, doing a lot of prayer
158:	I na sъ´(m)nuvane zaspà.	and at the twilight he fell down asleep
159:	i vidě` ednâ ženâ katô ednâ cárica,	and he saw a woman (looking) like a queen
160:	i sědì na stól' zlátь svě´tlíkavь.	and she sat on a shiny golden throne
161:	i okolò njéa stoę´tь mnw^go voíne xúbavi svě´tlikavy.	and many beautiful, shiny warriors stood around her
162:	i tói se upláši	and he was scared
163:	i páde ná zemlja	and he fell to the ground
164:	i rastrépera se wt xúbostь	and he trembled from their beauty
165:	ne móžaše da gléda tója světь.	he couldn't watch that light
166:	i édínь wt onïa xúbavy i světlýkavy mw´m'ci, pristъ´pi	and one of those beautiful shiny young men stepped to him
167:	i uzé go zá ruka,	and he seized his arm
168:	i rče mu.	and he said to him:
169:	stanì gew´r'gïe	ʺstand up, Georgi!ʺ
170:	i óti ste takà stórile,	ʺand as you did soʺ
171:	ta stè ostávile onovà tělô vonéšto. pri těló to stě´i pét'ky.	ʺas you left that stinking body next to the body of St. Petkaʺ
172:	àmì skóro da póĭdešь	ʺyou shall go quicklyʺ
173:	i da izvádišь móšti te stě´i pet'ki.	ʺand you shall retrieve the relics of St. Petkaʺ
174:	i da gŷ wstávišь ou kov'čégь zláty.	ʺand you shall put them to a golden coffinʺ
175:	zaštô crь požáli njéina dobrynà.	ʺfor the King craves for her virtueʺ
176:	i štè gь segà. da jù proslávi po síč'ki svě´tь.	ʺand now Lord will spread her fame in the whole worldʺ
177:	Togázi i tïá mu samâ podúma.	then she spoke to him herself:
178:	skóro izvadě´te mói te móšti.	ʺretrieve my relics quicklyʺ
179:	i položě´te na xúbavo mě´sto.	ʺand put (them) on a nice placeʺ
180:	zaštô ne mógu da trьpim áz'ь za mnw^go tóizi smràdь.	ʺbecause I can't suffer that stench anymoreʺ
181:	ne boíš' li se ba, da nè bŷ pustílь bь w´g'nь da vŷ. popáli.	ʺdon't you fear God that he'd cast fire to burn you?ʺ
182:	I áz esъmь člkь wt máika i wt baštâ rodéna.	ʺand I am a human (too), born from a mother and a fatherʺ
183:	i moè wtčьstvo epiváti što gô zově´te. i déto ste vŷe segâ na njégo.	ʺand my fatherland (is) Epibates, as you call it and where do you live nowʺ
184:	I prěz' tьzi nóštь i drúga žénâ dobrâ xrstïán'ka ime to éi Efímïa. i tïà takvózi vidě´la,	and in that night another woman, a good Christian, her name was Euphemia, saw such (a vision)
185:	i takvízy dúmy i njéi rékle,	and they said such words to her
186:	i zarъ´čale	and commanded:
187:	skóro útrě ráno da kážešь tovâ, da vŷ wt ba w´g'nь ne iz'gorì.	ʺyou shall tell that early in the morning, so that you won't be burned down by the fire of Godʺ
188:	I na utrě izlě´zoxa i dvaʺ ta,	and the both went out in the morning
189:	i kazáxu na síč'ki támo po konécь.	and told to all who where there to the end
190:	I katô čjúxa tovà Epivátscïi ljúdïe. skóro síč'ki tékoxa,	and as the people of Epibates heard it, they all hurried (to the grave)
191:	i sъs' golě´ma rádostь izvádixa, móšti te jéi katô ně´koe mnw^gocě´nno skróvište	and they retrieved her relics with great joy, as a very precious treasure
192:	i mnw^go se čjudíxa na njéino to stóe tě´lo.	and they wondered a lot about her holy body
193:	wt tól'kozi vrě´me kákь stoì cě´lo i krásno,	how could it stay so healthy after so much time
	i blgouxáe, i wt xúbava miriz'mà da sè člkь ne nasýti.	and (how could it) smell of beautiful scent, so that one cannot stop smell it
