4: Вели́ко нѣ́що добро́ й, благослове́ни христїаны, покаѧ́нїе, penance is something very good, blessed Christians
5: и такво́зи добро́ й, and it is such a good,
6: щото́ сѣ́кого чловѣ́ка спасова for it saves every man
7: и си́чки грѣхове́ заличáва, and it removes every sin
8: (n/a) (missing: it removes all the kinds of vices)
9: ни еди́нъ грѣ́хъ, де́то да го ни прости́ богъ, кꙋги́ са покáй. (there is) no sin, which could not be forgiven by God, when you repent
10: Покаѧ́ние стрꙋ́ва вели́ка рáдостъ на небе́ тꙋ и на бога и на áнгели те, penance causes a great joy in the heavens, for God and for the angels
11: кá-кво́то повелѣ́ва и господъ на свето́е евангелїе, as the Lord says in the holy Gospel
кáже: saying:
12: рáдостъ бывáетъ на небеси о еди́номъ грѣ́шницѣ кáющим сѧ. there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents (Lk 15:7)
13: Покаѧ́нıе та е очеще́нїе дꙋше́внꙋ на чловѣ́ка и вто́рꙋ кръще́нїе penance is a spiritual washing of a man and a second baptism
14: сасъ грѣхове́, (because those, who tainted their first baptism) with sins
пáкъ сáсъ покаѧ́нїе мо́же да го добї́й, again, with penance he can gain it
15: покаѧ́нїе та е́ голѣ́мъ до́бивъ на грѣ́шника человѣ́ка, penance is a great boon to a sinful man
16: какво́то го мартꙋри́сватъ кни́ги те на цръква та нáша. thus it is witnessed by the literature of our Church
17: От͛ тꙋ́й покаѧ́нїе спасꙋва мно́го грѣшни человѣ́ци thus many sinful men saved themselves by such penance
18: и нѣ́ токо́ че са спáсꙋха, and they did not only saved themselves
19: ами́ и светы станáха but also they became saints
20: та им са поклáнѣми ны́е дне́шни де́нь and we bow to them (until?) today
21: какво́то и светаѧ Марї́ѧ Єгипте́нина, де́то бе́ши блꙋ́дница и грѣ́шна женá, thus (we bow to) St Mary of Egypt too, who was an adulterous and sinful woman
22: че токо́ защо́ са покáѧ и по́сти са че са посвети for she became a saint only thanks to her penance and fasting
23: и поче́ти са от бога и от человѣци те. and she was honored both by God and humans
24: На тáзи света грѣхове́ те и покаѧ́нїе то щь да прикáжа дне́сь, благослове́ны христїáни. I want to tell you today about her sins and penance, blessed Christians
25: Заради́ тꙋ́й мо́лѧ на вáше господство́ for this reason, I pray you, gentlemen
26: послꙋ́шайте речи́ те сасъ си́чкꙋ ꙋсръ́дїе, do hear my words with all due care
замъ да разꙋмѣ́йте и да разбере́те, ко́лко мо́же покаѧ́нїе да помо́гни на человѣ́ка. so that you understand and learn, how much does penance help to a man
27: В Палести́нска та странá, бе́ши еди́нъ ıеромонáхъ there was a hieromonk in the land of Palestine called Zosima
28: на имѧ́ Зосимá.
29: То́зи стáрецъ бе́ши твръ́дѣ добродѣ́теленъ this old man was very virtuous
30: и то́лкосъ бе́ши похвáленъ на добродѣ́тель, his virtue was respected so much
ко́лкото мнози́на кало́гери от околовръ́стни те монасты́ри отхо́ждаха мно́го пъ́те да чю́етъ сло́во от ꙋстá та на оногосъ стáры. that many other hermits from the monasteries around were coming to hear the words from the mouth of that old man
31: И легоми́, като седѣ́ в͛ онзи монасти́ръ догде́ сто́ри стáрецъ годи́ни пе десе́тъ и три́, then, as he sat in that monastery, until the old man made 53 years
32: тоги́с мꙋ до́ди по́мислъ, тáк͛вьзи then he got an idea
и кáжи, and he said:
33: дали́ са ще наме́ри нѣко́й дето да ма наꙋчи́ нѣ́коѧ рáбота за калꙋ́герство. ʺcould there be found anyone, who would teach me something concerning hermitry?ʺ
34: Дáли́ ще и́ма нѣкой де́то да мꙋ не е ли́ѱало ни́когы ни́що, ами́, е сасъ си́чко довръ́шенъ? ʺis there anyone, who does never need anything, but rather is perfect in all aspects?ʺ
35: Дали́ ще има нѣ́кꙋй в͛ пꙋ́стинꙗ, де́то да ма е заминаль сас добры работы? ʺis there anybody in the desert, who surpasses me in virtue?ʺ
36: Тꙋ́й като́ ми́слеши стáреца тъ, as the old man thought so,
áнгель господень ꙗви́ мꙋ са an angel of the Lord appeared
37: и кáже мꙋ: and he said to him:
38: Зосимá, добри́ са легоми́ и тво́й те добрины́, ʺo Zosima, (ʺbecauseʺ) your virtues are good and greatʺ
39: ами́ ꙗ́ иди́ на Іордáнска та рѣкá, на монасти́рѣ т, де́тꙋ й тáмъ бли́зꙋ, ʺbut go along the river Jordan, to the nearby monasteryʺ
да ви́дишъ дрꙋ́ги по́- голѣ́ми сасъ добри́ рáботы от те́бѣ. ʺso that you can see others, whose virtue is greater than yoursʺ
40: Тоги́зи стáна тꙋ́такси стáрица тъ the old man stood up immediately
41: и оти́де на онзи монасти́ръ. and he went to that monastery
42: И сто́ри метáнїе and he prayed
43: и остáна тáмꙋ. and he remained there
44: А тáмꙋ оне́зи калꙋ́гери и́маха ꙋ́ставъ, those hermits had a custom
45: о́ти в͛ чи́стиѧ тъ понеде́лникъ излѣ́зеха си́чки те калꙋ́гери от монасти́ръ тъ that they all left the monastery on the Clean Monday
46: и отхо́ждаха в͛ пꙋстинѣ, се́кы по башкá на еди́нѣ, and they went one by one into the desert
47: и стрꙋ́ваха тáмꙋ до Връ́бница неде́лѧ. and they remained (ʺmadeʺ) there until the Palm Sunday
48: е спрот о́нзи ꙋстáвъ монасти́рскы изле́зи и стáрецъ Зосїмá, and the old man Zosima went out too, according to the custom of the monastery
49: и пре-минá Jорданска та рѣкá наедно сасъ дрꙋ́ги те калꙋ́гери. and (as) he crossed Jordan with other hermits
И като са отдѣ-ли́ха еди́нъ от дрꙋ́гиго, and as they separated themselves from each other
до́де мꙋ на ми́сль да вле́зи по вьтрешна та пꙋ́-стинꙗ, he thought (ʺa thought came to himʺ) to go deep into the desert
дано наме́ри нѣ́кого стáрца пꙋщинїака to find some old man hermit
да чю́ѧ нѣкоѧ дꙋ́ма божїѧ от не́го. to hear some divine word from him
50: И като́ връве́ши, довтáса чáсъ да чете́ акꙋлꙋѳїа та си, and as he went, the time came to sing his liturgy
51: че стáна на въстокъ and he stood towards the east
52: да са помо́ли богꙋ. and (to?) he prayed to God
53: И, тáмꙋ, де́тꙋ стоѧ́ше, ви́дѣ като́ сѣ́нка че мꙋ сá ꙗви́ человѣческꙋ тѣло and as he stood, he saw a human body, appearing as a shadow
54: и сто́ри са на стáрца токъ като́ че е мечтáнїе дїáволско. the old man thought the vision was a devilish one
55: И тꙋ́таксы сто́ри кръ́стъ на се́бе си. he crossed himself in the moment
56: И като си до-връ́ши аколꙋтї́а та, ви́дѣ очивѣ́стно, and as he finished his service, he saw clearly:
57: че връви́ человѣкъ от де́сна та мꙋ странá, that a human was walking on his right
58: и тѣ̀ло то мꙋ бе́ши трръ́дѣ че́рно, and his body was very black
59: а ко́сми те на главá та бѣхá бѣли като́ памꙋ́к͛, his hair on the head were white as cotton
60: ами́ бѣхá каси́, and they were short
61: токо́ до рáмо тꙋ мꙋ дости́гаха. they reached only to his arms
62: И като го́ ви́дѣ стáрица тъ, зарáдва са твръ́дѣ, and as the old man saw him, he rejoiced very much
63: като наме́ри ꙋнꙋ́й, де́то тръ́сеши. because he found what he was searching for
64: Поче́ да ти́ча поди́ре мꙋ, and he immediately started to run towards him
65: и като ви́дѣ ꙋнꙋ́й, че ти́ча по́- бръжи Зосıмá, то́й хвáна по́- много да бѣ́га, and as he saw Zosima running faster, he began to run (with) more (speed)
66: алá тꙋ́чеши по- бръжи. but he (Zosima) ran faster
67: И като са приближи́ бли́зꙋ, ко́лкото да са чюй глáсъ, расплáка са стáрица тъ as he closed in to the distance of an earshot, the old man cried
68: и като́ на ꙋнꙋ́й, дето са ви́дѣши, and he (said) to the one, who appeared:
69: защо́ бѣгашъ от ме́не грѣ́шнаго, рáбе божїи, ʺwhy are you running from sinful (myself), o servant of God?ʺ
70: защо сá гнꙋси́шъ от ме́не стáраго и не щешъ да сто́ришъ, да ма благослови́шъ. ʺwhy are you disgusted by my old self and (so much, that) you don't want to bless me?ʺ
71: Посто́й за любо́въ Христова, ʺstay for the love of Christ!ʺ
72: защо смъ стáръ ʺbecause I am oldʺ
73: и не мо́га да ти́чемъ поди́ре ти. ʺand I cannot run along yourselfʺ
74: Тꙋ́й като́ дꙋ́маши стáрица тъ и ти́чаши, as he was saying this and running
до-сти́гна до едно́ мѣ́сто, щото́ бе́ши като сꙋ́хъ по́токъ мáлакъ he reached a place, which was like a small, dry brook
75: та че о́нзи, дето са гле́даши, сле́зи and the one, who appeared, went down
76: та пáкъ възле́зи, and he went up again
77: а стáрица тъ ве́ки ꙋстáна but the old man was already weary
и не можá да примине, and he could not cross
78: ами са расплáка по- много. so he cried even more
79: Тоги́съ отгово́ри о́нзи де́то са гле́даше, then the one, who appeared, answered
80: и кáже: and he spoke:
81: Зосїма, да ма прости́шъ. ʺforgive me, Zosimaʺ
Аввá Зосїма, за и́мѧ божїи, ʺFather Zosima, for the sake of the Lord, for I cannot stand to let you see meʺ
82: оти не мо́га да стоѧ́ да ма ви́дишъ,
83: че смъ го́ла какво́то ма ви́дишъ, ʺbecause I am naked, as you see meʺ
84: и дрꙋ́го, ʺand alsoʺ
оти́ смъ же́нска странá. ʺbecause I am a womanʺ (ʺfemale sideʺ ?)
85: Ами́ ако щешъ да станá, а ти ми фръли́ еднá дре́ха ʺbut if you want me to stay, then throw me one of your shirts to clotheʺ
86: и да ми даде́шъ моли́тва та си. ʺand give me your prayerʺ
87: И като чю́ тꙋ́й Зосїмá, като пови́ка на и́мѧ, when Zosima heard it, being called by his name,
почю́ди са заради прозирáнїе то мꙋ, he wondered about her (ʺhisʺ) clairvoyance
88: че тоги́съ фръ́ли еднá от ве́хти те си дре́хи then he threw one of his old clothes
89: и тꙋги́съ ꙋти́ди and he went
90: и сто́ри метáнїе, and he prayed
91: тъ́й и о́нзи сто́ри метáнїе thus, the one (who appeared), prayed too
92: и за мно́го чáсъ стоѧ́ха ничи́шкомъ и двá та. and the both were staying for a long time with faces towards the ground
93: И единъ на дрꙋ́гиго кáзваши: and they were saying to each other:
94: благослови́ ма рáбе бо́жїи. ʺbless me, o servant of Godʺ
95: И поди́ръ мно́го чáсъ кáже онáзи женá: and many times, the woman said:
96: Авва Зосиме, тебѣ́ прили́ча да ма благо-словишъ, ʺo Father Zosima, it is appropriate for you to bless meʺ
97: защо́ си свеще́никъ бога вы́шнѧго ʺbecause you are a priest of the Highest Godʺ
98: и мно́го пъ́те си стоѧ́лъ въ светы́ олтáръ ʺand you have stood many times at (ʺinʺ) the holy altarʺ
99: та си мо́лилъ бога заради́ на дрꙋ́ги съгрѣше́ние то. ʺand you have prayed God for the sins of the othersʺ
100: И заради́ тꙋ́й благослови́ ти ме́не. ʺfor this reason, you bless me!ʺ
101: Тꙋги́зи отгово́ри Зосимá Zosima answered then
и кáже: and he spoke:
102: светице божїѧ, твоѧ́ та благодáтъ изꙗвꙗва та че си ти́ от ме́не по- много, ʺo you God's saint, the blessings on you seem to be stronger than mineʺ
103: защо́ си ти прозорли́ва ʺbecause you can prophesizeʺ
104: и знáйшъ и́ми тꙋ ми и какъ сáмъ свеще́нникъ. ʺand you know my name and that I am a priestʺ
105: Заради́ тꙋ́й та мо́лѧ твръ́дѣ, ʺthat's why I pray you so muchʺ
106: ты́ ма благослови. ʺyou bless meʺ
107: И като ви́дѣ онáсъ женá, де́то са гле́даши че ꙗ ве́ки не благослови́, станá самá as the woman, who appeared, saw, that he was not going to bless her, she stood up herself
108: и кáже: and she spoke:
109: богъ светы́, де́то лю́би на грѣшници те спасе́ние то, то́й да та благослови. ʺmay the holy God, who loves to save the sinners, may he bless youʺ
110: Тоги́зи стáна стáрецъ Зосїмá. then the old man Zosima stood up
111: Отгово́ри света the saint answered
112: и кáже на Зосїмá: and she spoke to Zosima:
113: Авва Зосїмá, защо са си трꙋ́дилъ, та си дошáлъ до тꙋ́ка, да ви́дишъ еднá женá грѣшна? ʺFather Zosima, why did you put such an effort, coming here to see one sinful woman?ʺ
114: Алá легоми́ ко́лко та е доне́слъ го́сподь до тꙋ́ка, речи́ ми, ʺbut because God brought you so far as here, tell meʺ
115: кáкъ са хри-стиáни те, ʺhow are the Christians?ʺ
116: какъ е свѣто́, ʺhow is the world?ʺ
117: какъ са царие́ те, ʺhow are the kings?ʺ
118: как͛ ли е́ цръ́ква та Христова. ʺhow is the Church of Christ?ʺ
119: Отгово́ри стáрецъ the old man answered
120: и кáже: and he spoke:
121: си́чкы те са добре́ сасъ твоѧ́ та преподо́бна моли́тва, ʺall are well enough with your honorable prayersʺ
122: амы́ моли́ бога и за тѣ́хъ и за ме́не, ʺbut pray for those and for me as wellʺ
123: оты́ заради́ тꙋ́й са смъ трꙋ́дилъ то́лкосъ пъ́тъ азъ грѣ́шны. ʺthat is why sinful me went such a wayʺ
124: И кáже мꙋ пакъ онáсъ женá: and the woman again spoke to him:
125: Авва Зосимá, тебѣ́ прили́ча да мо́лишъ бога заради ме́не, ʺFather Zosima, it is appropriate for you to pray God for meʺ
126: алá легоми́ ко́лко ми повелѣвашъ, да сто́рѣ послꙋшáнїе. ʺbut, because you want, let me confess to youʺ
127: Тꙋги́съ стáна на мно́го чáсъ then she stood for a long time
128: и молѣши са светá, and the saint prayed
129: алá гласъ са на чю́ваше от ꙋстá та й. but the voice from her mouth was not heard
130: А стáрец пáдна ничишко́мъ на земѣ́ та and the old man fell to the ground with face down
131: и кáзваше: господи поми́лꙋй. and he was saying ʺGod have mercyʺ
132: И поди́ръ мно́го вре́ме вди́гна си очи́ те, then, he lifted his eyes after a long time
133: и ви́дѣ, че бе́ши женá та еди́нъ лáкат͛ на висо́кꙋ от земѣ та. and he saw the woman being one fathom above the ground
134: И като ѧ ви́дѣ, ꙋгоди́ си на ꙋмо́, оти́ ще да бъ́ди нѣ́кое мечтáние бесо́веко and as he saw her, he put to his mind (the idea) as if it was some kind of devilish vision
135: и стрꙋ́ва са, че сá мо́ли. and that she (only) pretends that she prays
136: Тоги́зи отгово́ри ꙋнáсъ женá then the woman answered
137: и кáже: and she spoke:
138: какви́ по́мисли са тво́й те. Авва Зосїмá, ʺwhat are the thoughts you think about it your mind, Father Zosimaʺ
139: де́то си ꙋгáждашъ на ꙋма тъ че смъ мечтáнїе? ʺwhy (?) you think that I am a vision?ʺ
140: Женá съм по грѣ́шна от си́чкїѧ тъ свѣ́тъ. ʺI am a woman, the most sinful one in the worldʺ
141: И тꙋ́такси стори́ кръстъ на си́чко то си тѣло then she crossed herself over the whole body
142: и кáже на стáрца токъ: and she spoke to the old man:
143: Аввá Зосїмá, богъ да избáви нáсъ от мастꙋрїи́ те дїáволскы. ʺmay God free us of all devilish designsʺ
144: Тоги́съ Зосїмá пáдна до́лꙋ на земѣ́ та сáсъ слъ́зи мно́го then Zosima fell down to the earth with many tears
145: и хвáна са за кракá та светы́е and he embraced the saint's legs
146: и кáже й: and he spoke to her:
147: заклинамъ тѧ, рáбо божїѧ, ʺI pray you, o servant of Godʺ
148: речи́ ми, как͛ са наме́ри в͛ тáсъ пꙋсти́нѧ ʺtell me, how did you appear here in the desert?ʺ
и от гдѣ́ си ʺwhere are you from?ʺ
и кáк͛, са ли пости́ла ʺand how are you fasting?ʺ
и ко́лко времѧ и́машъ де́то си тꙋ́ка? ʺand for how long are you (ʺhow much time you haveʺ) here?ʺ
149: Речи́ ми за любо́въ божиѧ, ʺtell me, for the sake of God's loveʺ
150: не де́й да скриишъ не́що от мене́, ʺdo not hide anything from meʺ
151: оти́ легоми́ зарáди́ тꙋ́й благоволи́лъ богъ и видѣ́х та, ʺbecause that is why God allowed me that (ʺandʺ) I saw youʺ
зáмъ да чю́ѧ и áзъ от твои́ те речи́ нѣ́что и да придобїѧ. ʺso that I (may) hear something in your words, (which would) help meʺ
152: Защо́ да ни ще́ши богъ да та ви́дѣ áзъ, ʺbecause, if God would not want (me) to see youʺ
ни щѣхъ да мо́га да оби́да то́лкось пъ́ть, áзъ стáръ и и не мо́щенъ, ʺI would not walk such a (long) way, me, old and weakʺ
щото не мо́жахъ ни́коги въ́нь от келїꙗ́ та си да излѣза. ʺwho was never able to exit his own cellʺ
153: И като ви́дѣ светá речи́ те и слъзи́ те мꙋ and as the saint saw his words and tears
и кáже на Зосїмá: then she spoke to Zosima:
154: срáм ма ѧ грѣ́шна, да прикáжа работы те си, ʺI, sinful, am ashamed to tell you of my deedsʺ
155: защо́ са плъ́ни сасъ срáмъ. ʺbecause they are full of shame(fulness)ʺ
156: Алá пакъ токо́ да са исповѣ́дамъ дне́сь ꙗвле́но на светинѣ́ ти. ʺbut let me tell you today what is clear for your sainthoodʺ
157: Азъ смь, честны отче, от Єгѵпетъ, ʺI, o honorable old man, am from Egyptʺ
158: и роди́тели те- ми бѣха жи́ви, ʺand my parents livedʺ
159: а áзъ, като́ ʺbut as I reached the age of 12ʺ

да ни зе́мам͛ ни́комꙋ ни́що, ʺto not take anything from anyoneʺ
то́кꙋ да дохáж-датъ мно́го при ме́не, ʺonly that many come to meʺ
165: и то́лкози бѣх͛ си́рота, ʺand I was so poorʺ
166: щото́ токо́ на раце́ те си́ са надѣ́хъ, да рáботѣ и да живе́ꙗ, ʺthat I hoped I can live from my handʺ
167: когы сáсъ пре́лка, ʺsometimes (I lived) by distaffʺ
168: когы сáсъ дрꙋ́га рáбота. ʺsometimes with other worksʺ
169: Алá еди́нъ де́нь излѣ́зохъ въ́нь, по крáй море́ то, ʺthen one day I went out to the beachʺ
170: ви́дѣхъ мно́-жество, мно́го человѣ́ци, ʺand I saw a multitude of peopleʺ
де́то влѣ́зваха въ еднá гемї́а. ʺwho were boarding a shipʺ
171: И като гы ви́дѣхъ, попи́тахъ едного от тѣхъ, ʺand as I saw them, I asked one of themʺ
172: къде́ отхо́ждатъ те́зи человѣци, ʺwhere those people were goingʺ
173: а то́й ми и ре́чи, ʺand he told meʺ
оти́ на Ѥрꙋсали́мъ отхо́ждами, ʺthat they were going to Jerusalemʺ
174: защо́ сегы прнближáва деню на въздвиже́ние честнаго кръста. ʺbecause now there was going to be the Feast of the Cross soonʺ
175: Тоги́съ ре́кохъ на оного́съ, ʺthen I spoke to that oneʺ
176: дали́ щъ́тъ зе́ и ме́не. ʺwhether they wanted me to?ʺ
177: А то́й ми кáже: ʺand he spoke to me:ʺ
178: акꙋ имáшъ нáвлꙋнь да даде́шъ, ни́кꙋй та ни запи́ра. ʺif you have money for the fare to give, then nobody is going to stop youʺ
179: Отгово́рихъ ʺI answeredʺ
180: и áзъ мꙋ ре́кохъ: ʺand I spoke to him:ʺ
181: нáвлꙋнъ не мáмъ, ʺI don't have money for the fareʺ
182: ами́ имáмъ тѣ́ло и да са хрáнѣ и дá йда до Ѥрꙋсали́мь без кирї́а. ʺbut I have a body to feed myself (by it) and go to Jerusalem without fareʺ (?)
183: А то́й като чю́ те́зи дꙋ́ми от ме́не, ʺas he heard my words, he laughedʺ

и побѣ́гна от ме́не, ʺand he went away from meʺ
184: а áзъ. Авва Зосимá, нѣ́ че и́махъ добръ мы́слъ да и́да на Ѥрꙋсали́мъ, ʺbut I, o Father Zosima, somehow got a good intention to go to Jerusalemʺ
185: ами́ ищѣ́хъ да намѣ́ре и дрꙋ́ги человѣ́ци да ми стрꙋ́ватъ во́лѣ та. ʺbut I wanted to find some other people too, so that I can satisfy my desire with themʺ

210: Коги́ сти́гна диню́ тъ на въздвиже́ние, áзъ стрꙋвахъ грѣхо тъ, ʺwhen the Feast of the Cross came, I was sinning again as beforeʺ
211: гле́-дахъ человѣцы нощиꙗ́мъ де́то ꙋтáждаха на че́ркова. ʺand I saw that people were entering a church in the nightʺ
212: Оти́дохъ исти́на и азъ, едно́ токꙋ́ да гле́дамъ момци́ те. ʺI followed them too, just to see the boysʺ
213: Кътꙋ́ да са препо́нꙋвахъ да вле́зѣ. ʺas I tried to enter through the doorʺ

възпомѣнáхъ, защо отъ грѣхове те ми не мо́жа да влѣ́за. ʺI thought, that I could not come in because of my sinsʺ
221: И както плáчахъ рáди грѣхове́ те си, ʺand as I cried because of my sinsʺ
гле́дам от го́рѣ ми ʺI looked above meʺ
222: бе́ши еднá ико́на на пресветáѧ, there was an icon of the Most Holy
223: и като́ ѧ ви́дѣхъ, прослъзи́хъ са ʺand as I saw it, I was filled with tearsʺ
224: и ре́кох: ʺand I saidʺ
225: дѣво, владичице богородице, де́то си роди́ла господа нáшего ʺo Virgin Lady Mother of God, who has given birth to our Lord Jesus Christʺ

защо́ ве́ки да ни́ ꙋмръсѣ́вам͛ снагá та си, ʺso that I (will not) taint my flesh again
229: ами́ когы́ изле́за от че́ркова, ʺbut when I will exit the churchʺ
де́то ма ꙋпрáвеши, да и́да. ʺwhereever you point me, I will go (there)ʺ

231: и зе мáлко разговоръ ʺand I received some chatʺ (?)
232: и са смѣ́си сáсъ дрꙋ́ги человѣ́ци ʺthen I mingled with other peopleʺ
233: и влѣ́зохъ в че́ркова ʺand I entered the churchʺ
234: и веки ни́кꙋй не ма зáпре ʺand nobody was stopping meʺ

235: ами като по- напре́дъ опи́-рахъ ʺbut as (something was) being a barrier to me beforeʺ

236: И тꙋ́такси ма зе́ стрáхъ и трепе́-рени. ʺand suddenly fear and trembling overcame myselfʺ

237: пáднахъ и́стина на земѣ́ та ʺI fell down to the groundʺ
238: и сь по-клони́х. ʺand I bowedʺ
239: Прите́ко(х) на мѣ́сто то, де́то бе́ши истори́санъ богородица ʺI ran again to the place, where the Mother of God was picturedʺ
240: и сасъ слъ́зи плáчахъ ʺand I wept with tearsʺ
и дꙋ̀махъ: ʺand I spoke:ʺ
241: ты́, пресветаѧ дѣво, не мá си остáвила грѣшна и не досто́йна раби́нѣ твоѧ́ ʺyou, o Most Holy Virgin, do not turn away in disgust from me, your sinful and unworthy servantʺ
242: ами́ си мá сподоби́ла да ви́дѣ оно́зи де́то лю́бехъ ʺbut make me worthy to see what I fell in love withʺ
и ищѣ́хъ. ʺand (what) I wantedʺ
243: Ради тꙋ́й, владичице богородице, покажи́ ми пъ́тъ, какъ да се спасá. ʺfor this reason, o Lady Mother of God, show me the way to salvationʺ
244: Ты́ стани́ ꙋправи́телница на спасе́нїе то мое́, ʺyou be the helper of my salvationʺ
245: ты́ дето си́ стáнала кефи́лъ, ти ма ꙋправи́, какъ да арѣсамъ на сина токъ твое́го. ʺyou, who cared (for Him), you help me to please your Sonʺ
246: Дꙋ́мах áзъ те́зи, чю́хъ глáсъ, дето ми́ до́ди, ʺ(as) I spoke thus, I heard a voice as it cameʺ
247: защо́ ако преми-не́шъ Jордáнъ, ще́шъ намѣри голѣмъ поко́й. ʺ(ʺbecauseʺ) if you cross Jordan, you will find a great peaceʺ
248: И като чю́хъ, кли́кнах з͛ голѣ́мъ глáсъ: ʺand as I heard (it), I called with a strong voice:ʺ
249: владичицѣ, владичицѣ, не де́й ма остáве. ʺo Lady, Lady, do not abandon me!ʺ

251: и излѣ́зохъ да и́да кадетꙋ Jордáнъ. ʺand I went out to go to where Jordan (was)ʺ

и връвѣ́хъ в͛ пъ́тю. ʺand I went on the wayʺ
260: И при ве́черъ сти́гнахъ на хрáмꙋ свето́мꙋ Jоáннꙋ Предте́чꙋ, бли́зꙋ при Jоръдáнъ, ʺand in the evening I reached the temple of St. John the Forerunner near Jordan
261: и на диню тъ о́нзи съ причести́хъ на манасти́рю тъ, ʺand on that day I took the Eucharist in the monasteryʺ
262: изѣ́дохъ полови́на хлѣ́бъ ʺand I ate a half of a loafʺ
263: и пи́хъ от водá та Jордáнска. ʺand I drank from the water of Jordanʺ
264: Тоги́зи лѣ́гнахъ ʺthen I laid myselfʺ
265: и спáхъ тáмъ. ʺand I slept thereʺ
266: И на ꙋ́трѣ, коги́ съ́мнъ, ʺand in the morning, at the dawnʺ

274: четири- десе́тъ годи́ни имáмъ. Авва Засїмá, от коги́ самъ тꙋ́ка. ʺ40 years (ʺI haveʺ), o Father Zosima, since I am hereʺ
275: Ре́чи й Зосїмá Zosima spoke to her:
276: от гдѣ́ намѣ́решъ ꙗстїе до дне́с ʺand from where do you take (ʺfindʺ) your food until today?ʺ
277: и кáкъ минá то́лкози годи́ни? ʺor how did you survive so many years?ʺ
278: Рече мꙋ светáѧ: the saint spoke to him:
279: двá хлѣ́ба и полꙋви́на имáхъ, коги́ преминáхъ Jордáнъ ʺI had two and half loaves of bread, when I crossed the Jordanʺ
280: и то́л-кози исъ́хнаха де́то стáнаха като́ кáмикъ. ʺand they were as dry as stoneʺ
281: По мáлко и́стина по мáлко минáхъ сасъ оне́зи и от тръ́ва тъ на тꙋ́й пꙋще́нїе. ʺ(eating) a little by little, I survived with them and the desert grassʺ
282: Отгово́ри стáрцꙋ the old man answered
283: и ре́че й: and he spoke to her:
284: И кáкъ минá то́лкози вре́мѧ? ʺhow did you pass so much time?ʺ
285: Имаши ли нѣ́кой пáкостъ от дїáвола, или не́? ʺdid you have any annoyance from the Devil or not?ʺ
286: Ре́чи мꙋ светáѧ: the saint spoke to him:
287: Аввá Зосимá, рáбота ма си питáлъ, де́тꙋ трипе́ремъ да ти ги кáжа, ʺo Father Zosima, you are asking to say a thing I tremble fromʺ
288: защо ꙗко са смислѣхъ то́лкози пáкостъ детꙋ претръпѣ́(хъ) и пáтихъ. ʺbecause, if I am to remember all the snares I suffered fromʺ

тꙋ́й, де́тꙋ пáкостъ мно́го имáхъ от дїáвола, ʺ(in) which I had many annoyances from the Devilʺ
297: защо́, наче́нѣхъ да ꙗмъ, сми́слѣхъ са ме́со и ры́ба, дето бѣ́хъ в͛ Миси́ръ, ʺbecause (when) I began to eat, I remembered all the meat and fish, which were (ʺI wasʺ having?) in Egyptʺ
298: сми́слѣхъ вино́ то мно́го, де́то пїѧх в Миси́ръ, ʺI remembered all the wines, which I drank in Egyptʺ
299: и изгáреши сръдце то ми. ʺand my heart were set ablazeʺ
300: А тꙋ́ка нити́ во́да не́ ма да пїѧ́. ʺbecause here I did not have even water to drinkʺ
301: И пак са смислѣ́хъ пѣсни те, дето знаѧ́хъ ʺand then again, I was remembering the songs which I knewʺ
302: и наче́нѣхъ да пѣ́ѧ ʺand I used to begin to singʺ
303: и тꙋ́такси сми́слѣхъ грѣхове́ те си, пресветáѧ дѣва де́то ѧ ꙋгоди́хъ кефи́лъ. ʺand then I remembered my sins, and the most holy Virgin, whom I set as my helperʺ
304: И дꙋхáждаха ми слъ́зи ʺand the tears came to meʺ
305: и плáча си́рота. ʺand (I) cried, the poor oneʺ
306: И коги помо́лѣхъ бого-родица, свѣ́тъ мно́го пресвѣте́ши напре́де ми ʺand as I prayed the Mother of God, the world became more bright for meʺ
307: и съ загꙋбѣваши мислъ тъ ми злъ. ʺand my bad thoughts vanishedʺ
308: Кáкъ да ти искáжа. Авва Зосимá, о́гнь тъ, де́то горѣ́ши сръд-це то ми заради кꙋрвáрство тꙋ. ʺhow to tell (you), o Father Zosima, (about) the flame, which was burning in my heart because of adultery?ʺ
309: Ами́, коги́ ми до́деши так͛взи ми́слъ, пáднꙋвахъ до́лꙋ на земѣ́ та сасъ слъ́зи ʺbut as these thoughts were coming, I laid myself on the ground with tearsʺ
310: и нѣ стáвахъ, ако не ви́дѣхъ о́нзи свѣ́тъ да съ размáхни ми́съло тъ ми. ʺand I would not stand up if I did not see the light by which my thoughts fell apartʺ (?)
311: И е́тꙋ сасъ такви́зи пáкости, Аввá Зосимá, пáщахъ в си́дим на дисе тѣ́хъ они́зи годи́ни. ʺand thus, I was annoyed by such evils, o Father Zosima, for those 17 yearsʺ
312: От тоги́зи до дне́шнию де́нь съ́съ по́мощь на пресветаѧ не мам͛ нищо пáкостъ. ʺsince then, up until today, with the help of the Most Pure , I have no annoyanceʺ

318: дре́ха та ми пръ́ва, детꙋ и́махъ, съ расвали́ и пáдна, ʺthe clothes I had before were torn and fellʺ
319: и стꙋтъ мно́го имáхъ нощїамъ ʺand I had many cold nightsʺ
320: и пáкъ денъѧмъ имáхъ мно́го горещинá, ʺand then, I had much heat in the dayʺ
321: то́лкози де́тꙋ многꙋ пъ́тѧ пá-дахъ до́лꙋ като мъ́ртва от стꙋ́тъ мно́го. ʺso much, that (ʺhereʺ) I often fell down as dead because of much coldʺ
322: Ами́ богъ де́то ре́чи, защо́ не токꙋ от хлѣ́бъ жи́въ ѧ человѣкъ, то́й ма хрáнеши и покри́ваше. ʺbut God, who said that man does not live only by bread, He was feeding me and clothing meʺ
323: Защо́ покри́ небиѧ то сасъ облáци. ʺbecause He puts clouds onto heavensʺ (Ps 147:8)

едно́ токꙋ́ свѣтинѧ́ ти дне́сь, ʺ(I saw) only the holy yourself todayʺ
330: ами́ нети́ ѕвѣ́ръ или́ дрꙋ́го нѣ́що ви́дѣхъ то́лкози вре́мѧ, ʺbut I have not seen even a beast nor another animal for such timeʺ
331: нети́ кни́га знáмъ или́ ꙋчи́хъ, Аввá, ʺneither I know the Scriptures, nor did I learn, my Fatherʺ
332: ами́ богъ, де́то дáва рáзꙋмъ на человѣци те, о́нзи ми ги покáзꙋва те́зи дꙋ́ми. ʺbut God, who (ʺwhereʺ) gives reason to (ʺinʺ) humans, He taught me these wordsʺ

и какъ знáеши грѣшки те на манасти́рю тъ. and as she saw the sins of the monastery
355: И тꙋ́такси пáдна на земѧ та he just fell down to the ground
356: и цѣ́лꙋ́на мѣ́сто то, де́то сто́еши светаѧ and he kissed the ground, where the saint stood
357: и възблагодари́ блго and he thanked God (ʺgoodʺ)
