17: Ot' túĭ pokaę´nïe spasuva mnógo grěšni čelově´ci thus many sinful men saved themselves by such penance

i káži, and he said:
33: dalí sa šte naméri někóĭ deto da ma naučí ně´koę rábota za kalúgerstvo. ʺcould there be found anyone, who would teach me something concerning hermitry?ʺ
34: Dálí šte íma někoĭ déto da mu ne e líѱalo níkogy níšto, amí, e sasъ síčko dovrъ´šenъ? ʺis there anyone, who does never need anything, but rather is perfect in all aspects?ʺ
35: Dalí šte ima ně´kuĭ v' pústinja, déto da ma e zaminalь sas dobry raboty? ʺis there anybody in the desert, who surpasses me in virtue?ʺ
36: Túĭ kató mísleši stáreca tъ, as the old man thought so,
ángelь gospodenь javí mu sa an angel of the Lord appeared
37: i káže mu: and he said to him:
38: Zosimá, dobrí sa legomí i tvóĭ te dobriný, ʺo Zosima, (ʺbecauseʺ) your virtues are good and greatʺ
39: amí já idí na İordánska ta rěká, na monastírě t, détu ĭ támъ blízu, ʺbut go along the river Jordan, to the nearby monasteryʺ
da vídišъ drúgi pó- golě´mi sasъ dobrí ráboty ot tébě. ʺso that you can see others, whose virtue is greater than yoursʺ
40: Togízi stána tútaksi stárica tъ the old man stood up immediately
41: i otíde na onzi monastírъ. and he went to that monastery
42: I stóri metánïe and he prayed
43: i ostána támu. and he remained there
44: A támu onézi kalúgeri ímaxa ústavъ, those hermits had a custom
45: óti v' čístię tъ ponedélnikъ izlě´zexa síčki te kalúgeri ot monastírъ tъ that they all left the monastery on the Clean Monday
46: i otxóždaxa v' pustině, séky po bašká na edíně, and they went one by one into the desert
47: i strúvaxa támu do Vrъ´bnica nedélę. and they remained (ʺmadeʺ) there until the Palm Sunday

58: i tě`lo to mu béši trrъ´dě čérno, and his body was very black
59: a kósmi te na glavá ta běxá běli kató pamúk', his hair on the head were white as cotton
60: amí běxá kasí, and they were short
61: tokó do rámo tu mu dostígaxa. they reached only to his arms
62: I kato gó vídě stárica tъ, zarádva sa tvrъ´dě, and as the old man saw him, he rejoiced very much
63: kato naméri unúĭ, déto trъ´seši. because he found what he was searching for
64: Počé da tíča podíre mu, and he immediately started to run towards him
65: i kato vídě unúĭ, če tíča pó- brъži Zosımá, tóĭ xvána pó- mnogo da bě´ga, and as he saw Zosima running faster, he began to run (with) more (speed)
66: alá túčeši po- brъži. but he (Zosima) ran faster
67: I kato sa približí blízu, kólkoto da sa čjuĭ glásъ, raspláka sa stárica tъ as he closed in to the distance of an earshot, the old man cried
68: i kató na unúĭ, deto sa víděši, and he (said) to the one, who appeared:
69: zaštó běgašъ ot méne grě´šnago, rábe božïi, ʺwhy are you running from sinful (myself), o servant of God?ʺ
70: zašto sá gnusíšъ ot méne stárago i ne štešъ da stórišъ, da ma blagoslovíšъ. ʺwhy are you disgusted by my old self and (so much, that) you don't want to bless me?ʺ
71: Postóĭ za ljubóvъ Xristova, ʺstay for the love of Christ!ʺ
72: zašto smъ stárъ ʺbecause I am oldʺ
73: i ne móga da tíčemъ podíre ti. ʺand I cannot run along yourselfʺ
74: Túĭ kató dúmaši stárica tъ i tíčaši, as he was saying this and running
do-stígna do ednó mě´sto, štotó béši kato súxъ pótokъ málakъ he reached a place, which was like a small, dry brook
75: ta če ónzi, deto sa glédaši, slézi and the one, who appeared, went down
76: ta pákъ vъzlézi, and he went up again
77: a stárica tъ véki ustána but the old man was already weary
i ne možá da primine, and he could not cross
78: ami sa raspláka po- mnogo. so he cried even more
79: Togísъ otgovóri ónzi déto sa glédaše, then the one, who appeared, answered
80: i káže: and he spoke:
81: Zosïma, da ma prostíšъ. ʺforgive me, Zosimaʺ
Avvá Zosïma, za ímę božïi, ʺFather Zosima, for the sake of the Lord, for I cannot stand to let you see meʺ
82: oti ne móga da stoę´ da ma vídišъ,
83: če smъ góla kakvóto ma vídišъ, ʺbecause I am naked, as you see meʺ
84: i drúgo, ʺand alsoʺ
otí smъ žénska straná. ʺbecause I am a womanʺ (ʺfemale sideʺ ?)
85: Amí ako štešъ da staná, a ti mi frъlí edná dréxa ʺbut if you want me to stay, then throw me one of your shirts to clotheʺ
86: i da mi dadéšъ molítva ta si. ʺand give me your prayerʺ
87: I kato čjú túĭ Zosïmá, kato povíka na ímę, when Zosima heard it, being called by his name,
počjúdi sa zaradi proziránïe to mu, he wondered about her (ʺhisʺ) clairvoyance
88: če togísъ frъ´li edná ot véxti te si dréxi then he threw one of his old clothes

91: tъ´ĭ i ónzi stóri metánïe thus, the one (who appeared), prayed too
92: i za mnógo čásъ stoę´xa ničíškomъ i dvá ta. and the both were staying for a long time with faces towards the ground
93: I edinъ na drúgigo kázvaši: and they were saying to each other:
94: blagosloví ma rábe bóžïi. ʺbless me, o servant of Godʺ
95: I podírъ mnógo čásъ káže onázi žená: and many times, the woman said:
96: Avva Zosime, tebě´ prilíča da ma blago-slovišъ, ʺo Father Zosima, it is appropriate for you to bless meʺ
97: zaštó si svešténikъ boga výšnęgo ʺbecause you are a priest of the Highest Godʺ
98: i mnógo pъ´te si stoę´lъ vъ svetý oltárъ ʺand you have stood many times at (ʺinʺ) the holy altarʺ
99: ta si mólilъ boga zaradí na drúgi sъgrěšénie to. ʺand you have prayed God for the sins of the othersʺ
100: I zaradí túĭ blagosloví ti méne. ʺfor this reason, you bless me!ʺ
101: Tugízi otgovóri Zosimá Zosima answered then
i káže: and he spoke:
102: svetice božïę, tvoę´ ta blagodátъ izjavjava ta če si tí ot méne po- mnogo, ʺo you God's saint, the blessings on you seem to be stronger than mineʺ
103: zaštó si ti prozorlíva ʺbecause you can prophesizeʺ
104: i znáĭšъ ími tu mi i kakъ sámъ svešténnikъ. ʺand you know my name and that I am a priestʺ
105: Zaradí túĭ ta mólę tvrъ´dě, ʺthat's why I pray you so muchʺ
106: tý ma blagoslovi. ʺyou bless meʺ
107: I kato vídě onásъ žená, déto sa glédaši če ja véki ne blagosloví, staná samá as the woman, who appeared, saw, that he was not going to bless her, she stood up herself
108: i káže: and she spoke:
109: bogъ svetý, déto ljúbi na grěšnici te spasénie to, tóĭ da ta blagoslovi. ʺmay the holy God, who loves to save the sinners, may he bless youʺ
110: Togízi stána stárecъ Zosïmá. then the old man Zosima stood up
111: Otgovóri sveta the saint answered
112: i káže na Zosïmá: and she spoke to Zosima:
113: Avva Zosïmá, zašto sa si trúdilъ, ta si došálъ do túka, da vídišъ edná žená grěšna? ʺFather Zosima, why did you put such an effort, coming here to see one sinful woman?ʺ
114: Alá legomí kólko ta e donéslъ góspodь do túka, rečí mi, ʺbut because God brought you so far as here, tell meʺ
115: kákъ sa xri-stiáni te, ʺhow are the Christians?ʺ
116: kakъ e světó, ʺhow is the world?ʺ
117: kakъ sa carié te, ʺhow are the kings?ʺ
118: kak' li é crъ´kva ta Xristova. ʺhow is the Church of Christ?ʺ
119: Otgovóri stárecъ the old man answered
120: i káže: and he spoke:
121: síčky te sa dobré sasъ tvoę´ ta prepodóbna molítva, ʺall are well enough with your honorable prayersʺ
122: amý molí boga i za tě´xъ i za méne, ʺbut pray for those and for me as wellʺ
123: otý zaradí túĭ sa smъ trúdilъ tólkosъ pъ´tъ azъ grě´šny. ʺthat is why sinful me went such a wayʺ
124: I káže mu pakъ onásъ žená: and the woman again spoke to him:
125: Avva Zosimá, tebě´ prilíča da mólišъ boga zaradi méne, ʺFather Zosima, it is appropriate for you to pray God for meʺ
126: alá legomí kólko mi povelěvašъ, da stórě poslušánïe. ʺbut, because you want, let me confess to youʺ
127: Tugísъ stána na mnógo čásъ then she stood for a long time
128: i molěši sa svetá, and the saint prayed
129: alá glasъ sa na čjúvaše ot ustá ta ĭ. but the voice from her mouth was not heard
130: A stárec pádna ničiškómъ na země´ ta and the old man fell to the ground with face down
131: i kázvaše: gospodi pomíluĭ. and he was saying ʺGod have mercyʺ
132: I podírъ mnógo vréme vdígna si očí te, then, he lifted his eyes after a long time
133: i vídě, če béši žená ta edínъ lákat' na visóku ot země ta. and he saw the woman being one fathom above the ground
134: I kato ę vídě, ugodí si na umó, otí šte da bъ´di ně´koe mečtánie besóveko and as he saw her, he put to his mind (the idea) as if it was some kind of devilish vision
135: i strúva sa, če sá móli. and that she (only) pretends that she prays
136: Togízi otgovóri unásъ žená then the woman answered
137: i káže: and she spoke:
138: kakví pómisli sa tvóĭ te. Avva Zosïmá, ʺwhat are the thoughts you think about it your mind, Father Zosimaʺ
139: déto si ugáždašъ na uma tъ če smъ mečtánïe? ʺwhy (?) you think that I am a vision?ʺ
140: Žená sъm po grě´šna ot síčkïę tъ svě´tъ. ʺI am a woman, the most sinful one in the worldʺ
141: I tútaksi storí krъstъ na síčko to si tělo then she crossed herself over the whole body
142: i káže na stárca tokъ: and she spoke to the old man:
143: Avvá Zosïmá, bogъ da izbávi násъ ot masturïí te dïávolsky. ʺmay God free us of all devilish designsʺ
144: Togísъ Zosïmá pádna dólu na země´ ta sásъ slъ´zi mnógo then Zosima fell down to the earth with many tears
145: i xvána sa za kraká ta svetýe and he embraced the saint's legs
146: i káže ĭ: and he spoke to her:
147: zaklinamъ tę, rábo božïę, ʺI pray you, o servant of Godʺ
148: rečí mi, kak' sa naméri v' tásъ pustínę ʺtell me, how did you appear here in the desert?ʺ
i ot gdě´ si ʺwhere are you from?ʺ
i kák', sa li postíla ʺand how are you fasting?ʺ
i kólko vremę ímašъ déto si túka? ʺand for how long are you (ʺhow much time you haveʺ) here?ʺ
149: Rečí mi za ljubóvъ božię, ʺtell me, for the sake of God's loveʺ
150: ne déĭ da skriišъ néšto ot mené, ʺdo not hide anything from meʺ
151: otí legomí zarádí túĭ blagovolílъ bogъ i vidě´x ta, ʺbecause that is why God allowed me that (ʺandʺ) I saw youʺ
zámъ da čju´ę i ázъ ot tvoí te rečí ně´čto i da pridobïę. ʺso that I (may) hear something in your words, (which would) help meʺ
