6:	njéino čjúdo, i njéinь pós, kói ezíkь móže iskáza,	which tongue could retell all of her miracles and her fasting?
7:	što ê tïà stórila dobrà rábota ná zemlja.	what goodness she did on the Earth
	na epivát'sko mě´sto, i na	in the land of the town of Epibates
	trakï´isko, i na	and in the Thracian (land)
	trь´novь, i na	and in Tarnovo
	mísïa, i na	and in Moesia
	dal'máti. i něʺ	and in Dalmatia
	tь´kmo po tï´a mě´sta, àmì i	and not merely in those lands
	po síč'ki svě´tь.	but all over the world?
8:	dêto nášь úmь ne móže da postígnje,	our mind cannot reach there
	ilì ezíkь nášь da iskáže síčko to njéĭno čjúdo, i dobrò, i póst, i slь´zy.	or our language cannot tell of all her miracles and goodness and fasting and tears
9:	àmì tь´kmo kól'koto nášь úmь postígna.	but only as much as our mind could comprehend
10:	i napísax ázь eѵ'tímïe patrïár'xь trь´nov'skyi, štò znajáxь.	and so I, Euthymius, Patriarch of Tъrnovo, wrote what I knew
11:	àmì i víe blsvénïi xrstïáne poslúšaĭte.	but also you, blessed Christians, do hear
12:	Tázi staa i prpodobnà pétka, bě´še wt mě´sto epiváti.	that Saint and Reverend Petka was from the land of Epibates
13:	baštà njéinь i máĭka ì bě´xa dobrì i blgočь´stivyʺ.	her father and her mother were good and pious
14:	i xóděxa pó bžii zápovědь,	and they lived (ʺwalkedʺ) according to Divine Commandment(s)
15:	mlstýnja číněxa,	(they) performed deeds of mercy
16:	i drúgy dobrinỳ bě´xa u tě´xь.	and (also) other good deeds were (done) by them
17:	i ródixa tь´zi čístaa i xva gь´labica i dvca.	and they gave birth to this pure, Christ's dove and maiden
18:	i ródixa i drúgo mь´ž'ko, íme to mu eѵ'tímïe,	and they gave birth also to another male (child), his name (was) Euthymius
	što by^ nápokonь na madítь vldka.	who finally became the bishop of Madit (Matidia?)
19:	i naúčixa gy na stráx bžïi, i na zákonь dobrě`.	and (the parents) tought them to fear God and His law (ʺthe fear of God and the lawʺ) well
20:	i prěstávixa se.	and they died (ʺpresented themselvesʺ, i.e. to God)
21:	i ostà sta pet'ka sьs' bráta si^ eѵ'tímïa, dêto by^ vldka na madítь.	and St Petka remained with her brother Euthymius, who became the bishop of Madit
22:	i tói mnw^go čjúdo pokáza támo.	and he did many miracles there
23:	zaštò bě´še i tói prosvě´tilь sьs' póstь mnw^go dobrinỳ,	because he had shone with his fasting (and) many good deeds as well (?)
24:	zatová se i postỳ.	for that reason he was canonized
25:	i njégovy móšti i do dnéska čjúdno iscěljénïe čínjatь.	and his relics cause a lot of miraculous healing until today
26:	I staa pét'ka wt katô pogrébe rodítelje svoì, wtredí gy dobrě`.	and St Petka, since she buried her parents, she gave them their due well
27:	togázi započè póstь i metánïe, i bdě´nïe.	then she began with fasting, and bowing, and staying awake
28:	I porévna ĭ se katô apstlьskyʺ zákonь.	and it came to her mind (ʺit wanted to herʺ) as an apostolic law
29:	i ná zemlja bez' postélja légnuvaše.	and she laid herself on the ground without a bed
30:	I wt túka pákь ì se isplь´ni srdcé to na míslь bžst'vnaa	and then her heart was filled by a divine thought
	da íde vъ pústynja.	to go into the desert
31:	i pobě´gna wt támo,	and she ran from there
32:	i wtidè vь pústynja,	and went to the desert
33:	i tamo prěbývaše aggl'skyi čínь.	and an angelic host lived there
34:	i podrьža ì katô ilï´a, i katô ıwánna krstlja.	and (it?) followed her example as (if she were) Elijah or (ʺasʺ) John the Baptist
35:	pos, i bdě´nïe, i metánïe, i slь´zy, stúdь, i pékь, síčko trьpě´še.	fasting, staying awake, bowing and tears, cold and heat - she endured everything
36:	i vьkúsjuvaše trě´va mě´sto jástïe,	and ate grass instead of food
	i tò po mál'ko ná večrь.	and (even) that (only) a little in the evening
37:	i mlba neprěstánno číněše.	and she prayed (ʺdid prayerʺ) perpetually
38:	i níčto da ímaše míslь za tóĭzi svě´tь,	and she wouldn't have a thought about the world (?)
	ilì za dobrà odéžda da sè oblěčè.	nor about good clothes to wear
	ilì za dómь i za stóka i za imánïe.	nor about a house and goods and wealth
39:	àmì tь´kmo ꙫčí tě ì bě´xa slь´zy naplь´njenïi. i m´lba ná ba.	but only her eyes were filled by tears and prayers to God
40:	i síč'ka míslь bě´še ì i nadéžda na ga ba.	and all of her thoughts were the hope of the Lord God
41:	i pomýsljuvaše za vtóro prišь´stvïe za bžïi súdь.	and she thought about the Second Coming, about the Divine Judgment
	i kákь da sì ukrasì dšь´ ta da sréštne xa ba sь světílnikь ukrasénь.	and how to decorate her soul, to meet Christ the God with a decorated (prepared) lamp
	i kakvò dobrò da stóri.	and what good deed should she do
	da čjúe togázi glas krót'kь wt ga ba.	to hear that meek voice of the Lord God
	i kákь da sì isplь´ni světílnikь sьs máslo	and how to fill the lamp with oil
	da vlě´ze sьs' múdry te dvci v' rái,	to enter the Paradise with the wise maidens
	da sè nasýti krasotà ráĭskaa i xùbostь i svě´tlostь,	to satisfy herself with the heavenly glory and (the) beauty and (the) light
	i pě´sny ágglьskye.	and (the) angelic songs
42:	tь´kmo za tovà iʺ bě´še míslь,	her thoughts were (directed) only for that
43:	i tvrь´dě tьgúvaše sьs srdcé to si^,	and she yearned powerfully in her heart
	kákь da polúči onovà dobrò.	how to receive that boon
44:	i takà prováždaše svóĭ živótь po wnь´zi pústynja za mnw^go vrě´me.	and thus she lived her life on that desert for a long time
45:	A lukávyʺ dïávolь ne prěstánuvaše da ę^ pláši	but the Devil didn't cease to frighten her
46:	i mnw^go pь´ti se prěstrúvaše katô źvě´rь strášenь,	and many times (he) changed himself to a terrible beast
	davnò by^ jà uplášilь da ostávi pústynja.	to frighten her (and thus force her) to leave the desert
47:	àmì staa pét'ka ímaše ba pomóštnika.	but St Petka had God (as a) helper
48:	i ne prěstánuvaxa ì slь´zy wt ꙫčí te.	and the tears didn't stop (to flow) from her eyes
49:	i síč'ka xítrostь dïávol'ska izčéznuvaše wt njéina ta m´lba.	and all the devilish cunning was vain because of (ʺdisappeared fromʺ) her prayer
50:	Takvázi síla bě´še dobíla wt ba,	such a power she had acquired from God
51:	i tь´ĭ se bě´še podkánila,	and thus she had decided to live
52:	makàrъ da bě´še ženâ	altough she was a woman
53:	àmì bě´še isplьnjéna dxa stgó.	but she was filled (by the) Holy Spirit
54:	i běgaše wt njéa síla dïávol'ska	and the devilish force ran away from her
55:	i isčéznuvaše katô dýmь.	and disappeared as a smoke.
56:	Dvdь crь za takvízi žéni prrokuvaše,	King David prophesized about such women
57:	i káže.	and said:
58:	vьždelěétь crь dóbrotě tvoéi.	ʺLet the king be enthralled by your beautyʺ (Ps 45:11 NIV)
59:	I takà staʺ pétka prěby^ mnw^go godíny vъ pústynja.	and thus lived St Petka for many years in the desert
60:	I vъ ednà nóštь kató	and (ʺinʺ) one night
	si číněše m´lba i metánïe,	as she was doing her prayers and bowing
	i rьcě´ te sî vdígaše nagórě´ i pláčěše.	and she raised her hands high and wept
	i náprasno vidě` bžst´vno vidě´nïe.	and suddenly she saw a divine apparition
61:	edínь ágglь ì se jávi, katô ně´koi mládь mómьkь,	an angel appeared to her as a young boy
62:	i svě´ti katô svěštь.	and (he) shined as a candle
63:	i réče ì.	and he said to her:
64:	da ostávišь pústynja ta,	ʺ(you should) leave the desertʺ
65:	i idí si pákь nazádь na tvoà báštnina.	ʺand go back to your homelandʺ
66:	Zaštò támo ti prilíče da sì ostávišь těló to.	ʺbecause it is good for you to leave your body thereʺ
67:	a dšá ta ti štê da bь´de na xúbavyʺ i na slád'kyʺ rái.	ʺand your soul shall be in the beautiful and immaterial Paradiseʺ
68:	Katô vidě` staa pét'ka tovà vidě´nïe, i čju tï´a dúmi	as St Petka saw this apparition and heard those words
	razumě če è wt ba tovà vidě´nïe,	she understood, that this apparition was from God
69:	i poznà če štê da sè prěstávi skóro,	and she found out that she will die soon
70:	i zaráduva se.	and she was glad
71:	i grížěše se	and she worried:
72:	kak sì ostávě pústynja ta,	ʺhow can I leave the desert?ʺ
73:	zaštò ne móže níšto drúgo da očísti člku dšь´ ta katô pústynja.	because nothing else can purify the human soul as a desert
74:	I togázi staa pétka katô čju^ onzi glas,	and then, as St Petka heard that voice
	i da ì se ne ště´še	even though she didn't want
	a tià ostávi onázi pústynja.	she left that desert
75:	I poidè prь´věnь na crigrád,	and first she went to Tsarigrad
76:	i vlě´ze v' čérkova xva u staa sófïa	and entered the church of Christ of (ʺtoʺ) St Sophia
77:	i m´lba neprěstánno číněše.	and she prayed (ʺdid prayerʺ) perpetually
78:	kákь da iskáže člkь tól'kozi metánïa i póklony,	how could one describe so many kneelings and bowings
79:	i síčki dnì i nóšti na bdě´nïe bě´še,	and she was awake for all the days and nights
80:	i pláčěše i tьgúvaše za pústynja ta.	and she wept and craved for the desert
81:	I obydè síč'ki čér'kovy katô ednà pčelà rabótna,	and she visited all the churches as a diligent bee
	štotò ob'xódi síčki cvě´twve prólě´tny.	which visits all the vernal flowers
82:	I poidè v' čérkova prěstě´i bci, što sè zovè vlaxérna.	and (then) she went to (the) church of most-holy Mother of God which is called Blachernae
83:	i támo pripáde na íkona prěstě´i bci.	and there she came (ʺfellʺ?) to the icon of most-holy Mother of God
84:	i slь´zy wt ꙫčí tě si mnw^go izlïà.	and she poured a lot of tears from her eyes
85:	i dúmaše i mljaše s bci.	and she said and prayed to the Mother of God:
86:	Tébě vldčce što sì na síčki svě´tь,	ʺUpon yourself, o Lady (ʺwhich isʺ) of the whole worldʺ
	i porodíla si ga ba.	ʺand who gave birth to Lord Godʺ
	ázь móĭ živótь u tébě ostávix.	ʺto yourself I dedicated (ʺleftʺ) my lifeʺ
87:	i na tébě se nadě´a da mè pomluvašь.	ʺand in yourself I hope that you have mercy upon meʺ
88:	i ne dě´i se gnusì wt méne što sь´mь tvoà robinjà.	ʺdon't turn away in disgust from me, your servantʺ
89:	Zaštò i ázь wt mládostь tvoému snu poslě´dováx,	ʺbecause I followed your son and prayed since my youthʺ
90:	i m´lja se.	ʺand I pray (you)ʺ
91:	i tyʺ znáešь bce móa ta žén'skaa rábota i moà slábostь	ʺand you know, o Virgin, my womanly nature and my weaknessʺ
	štô e na móa ta dša oznóba.	ʺwhich worries my soulʺ (ʺwhich is my soul's worryʺ)
92:	àmì i tyʺ staa bce,	ʺbut you, o St Mother of Godʺ
	tyʺ mi bьdì pomóštnica.	ʺyou be my helperʺ
93:	zaštô osvě´nь tébe na drúgo mě´sto né mam da sè nadě´a.	ʺbecause I have no hope at another place than by yourselfʺ
94:	àmì tyʺ mi bьdì nastávnica	ʺbut you be my teacherʺ
	da mê nastávišь na dobrò i na pokaánïe.	ʺso that you leads me to the goodness and remorseʺ
95:	i tyʺ da mè upázišь wt síčko zloʺ.	ʺ(so that) you shall protect me from all evilʺ
96:	zaštò kogà bě´x vь pústynja tébe ímax pomóštnica.	ʺbecause I had yourself as my helper as I was in (the) desertʺ
97:	i segá se vrьnáx vь mírь.	ʺbut now I have returned into (the) worldʺ
98:	àmì pákь i segá me očúvai i upazì,	ʺbut now, hear and protect me againʺ
99:	i pomóštnica mi bьdì,	ʺand be my helperʺ
100:	i pokry^i me wt síčko zloʺ.	ʺand cover me from all evilʺ
101:	I tová se pómli,	and thus she prayed
102:	i pláka wt sè srdce	and wept from all heart
103:	i izlě´ze	and she left
104:	i trьgnà da íde na svóa ta si báštnina.	and went (ʺto goʺ) to her (ʺownʺ) homeland
105:	I doidè do epiváti štò bě´še njéina báštnina.	and came to Epibates, which was her homeland
106:	i prěbŷ támo vrě´me né malo,	and stayed there for quite some time
107:	i níkoi ne poznavaše ja.	and nobody recognized her
108:	I támo póstь metánïe, bdě´nïe,	and there (she did much) fasting, kneeling (and) staying awake
	kói móže iskáza.	who could tell (how much?)
109:	Vrě´me ně´koe promína se	some time passed
110:	i poznà če štê da sè prěstávi.	and she understood that she will die (soon)
111:	i stóri si mlba ná ba,	and she gave (ʺdid herʺ) a prayer to God
112:	i rčé sь slь´zi.	and said with tears:
113:	Člkoljúb'če vldko,	ʺo Lord, Lover of humansʺ
	da nè ostávišь méne što sь´m robínja tvoà	ʺdo not leave me, (who am) your servantʺ
	dêto s'mь zaradʺ tébe ostávila síč'ko,	ʺwho has left everything for youʺ
114:	i k tebě priběgnax.	ʺand to yourself I ranʺ
115:	àmì gi be móĭ, rečì ágglu mírno	ʺbut, my Lord God, give a calm command to an angelʺ
	da mì prïéme dšь´ ta.	ʺto receive my soulʺ
116:	i da mì ne bь´de zabránjeno da ulě´za na tvoè crstvo wt mrь`snïi i ne čístïi bě`sove.	ʺand that I wouldn't be barred from entering your kingdom by unpure and tainted demonsʺ
117:	àmì me spodobì bez' stráx da stána prěd tvóĭ strášny prěstólь.	ʺbut make me worthy to stand without fear before your awesome throneʺ
118:	oti si blsvénь gi vь vě´ky,	ʺbecause you are blessed, o Lord, in eternityʺ

120:	I tová se pom´li,	and she prayed thus
121:	i tóizi čas prědáde si^ bu dšь´ ta.	and in that moment she turned her soul over to God
122:	i těló to i pogréboxa ně´koiʺ xrstiáne.	and some Christians buried her body
123:	i ne pozná ja níkoi dogde (j)ʺa i pogréboxa,	and no one knew her, as they buried her
124:	niʺto znájaxa wt kidě` bě` došlà.	nor they knew where she had come from
125:	I taká si provódi dní te svoì túka ná zemljà,	and thus she passed her days here on the Earth
126:	à támo naidè golě´mo dobrò i lesninà,	and there she found great good and comfort
127:	àmì i túka gь bь ne ostávi ja da ê za mnw^go dni sьkry^ena ná zemljà.	but even here, Lord God wouldn't leave her hidden in the Earth for long
	i da ê bez pámetь njéino to čístoe i stóe tě´lo,	to leave her pure and holy body to remain without rememberance
128:	àmì pokáza čjúdo dívno zaradì njéĭni te stýe móšti.	but he showed a miracle on her holy relics
129:	Ně´koi póstnikь ímaše támo	there was a hermit
130:	na stlь´pь prěbývaše.	he lived on a pillar
131:	i póstěše se blízo pri onovà mě´sto, gdeʺto eʺ bilo` grôbь tь stěí pét'ki.	and he fasted near the site of the St Petka's grave
132:	I slučí se tâ umrě` ně´koi gemeџï^a,	and it came to pass, a sailor died
133:	i frьlíxa go támo blízo pri on'zi stlь´pь.	and they threw him there, close to that pillar
134:	i počè da isxódi wt njégo smràdь zlьʺ,	and a terrible stench started to come out from him
	kól'koto vekíê ne móžaše támo da pomíne člkь wt zlaʺ mirizmà.	so much that one couldn't pass by because of the stench
135:	zaednò i onzi stlь´pnik vekjê ne možè da trьpì onzi smràdь.	neither the stylite could suffer that stench
136:	àmì slě´ze wt on'zi stlь´pь,	so he climbed down from the pillar
137:	i naidè člci,	and he found some men
138:	i rčé ímь da iskopájut trápь golě´m	and he commanded them to dig a big hole
	da túrjatь onovà tě´lo čtôto smrьdě´še.	to throw that stinking body (down there)
139:	i onï´a člcïi poslúšaxa onogózi stlь´pnika,	and those people obeyed the hermit
140:	i poidóxa támo.	and they went there
141:	i zéxa da kopájatь,	and started to dig
142:	i naidóxa těló to stěí pétky, cělo, i xúbavo	and they found the body of St Petka, healthy and beautiful
143:	i mirizmà xúbava, kól'koto navívaše. tázi mϋrizmà na ón'zi smradь.	and how (her) beautiful scent covered the odor of that stench!
144:	i onï´a člci bě´xa glúpavy i ne rázumny,	and those people were dumb and irrational
145:	i ne mogóxa da sè osě´tetь za onovà stóe tě´lo.	and they couldn't understand that (it was a) holy body
146:	zaštò i níkoi ne znáeše čê e támo pogrebéna staa pétka.	because nobody knew that St Petka was buried there
147:	óti bě´še wt dávna bilà pogrebéna.	because she was buried since long
148:	àmì se mnw^go čjúdixa kákь da stórętь.	and they wondered a lot what should they do
149:	i rékoxa si^ méždu sébě.	and they said to each other:
150:	kóĭ pákь da kopáe na drúgo mě´sto.	ʺwho would dig elsewhereʺ
151:	àmì e túka tóizi gróbь dósta širókь i glьbókь,	ʺthis grave here is wide and deep enoughʺ
152:	da túrime i onázi mrь´ša, da nè smrdi.	ʺlet's throw that corpse (here) as well, so that it doesn't stinkʺ
153:	a tò akò bь´de tovà sto tě´lo, bь šte go izvádi.	ʺand if it would be a holy body, God will take it outʺ
154:	i zarínaxa onázi mrь´ša támo, pri onovà stóe tě´lo,	and they buried that corpse there next to that holy body
155:	i razydóxa se po domá sy.	and they all went home
156:	I wt tě´x ně´ko člkь gew´rgïe íme to mu xristïáninь dóbrь,	one of them (was) a certain Georgi, a good Christian
157:	i tói kató si poidè domá si. i po večérě nápokonь stanь^ da sè pom´li bu,	and as he also went home and dined, he stood up to pray to God
	kató si číněše sě´kogy m´lba. mnw^go.	as he always did, doing a lot of prayer
158:	i na sъmnúvanïe zaspà.	and at the twilight he fell down asleep
159:	i vidě` ednà ženâ katô ednà crca	and he saw a woman (looking) like a queen
160:	i sědì na stólь zlátь světlikavь,	and she sat on a shiny golden throne
161:	i okolo njéa mw´m'ci xúbavy světlíkavy.	and many beautiful, shiny boys (stood) around her
162:	i tóĭ se upláši,	and he was scared
163:	i páde ná zemlja,	and he fell to the ground
164:	i rastrepéra se,	and he trembled
165:	wt xúbostь ne móžaše da gléda tója svě´tь.	he couldn't watch that light for its beauty
166:	I edínь wt onï´a xúbavy i světlíkavy móm'ci pristь´pi	and one of those beautiful shiny young men stepped to him
167:	i uzé go za rьkâ,	and he seized his arm
168:	i rčé mu.	and he said to him:
169:	stanì gew´rgïe	ʺstand up, Georgi!ʺ
170:	i óti ste takà stórile,	ʺand as you did soʺ
171:	ta stè ostávile onovà tě´lo vonéšto, pri tě´lo to stě´i pét'ky.	ʺas you left that stinking body next to the body of St Petkaʺ
172:	àmì skóro da póĭdešь	ʺyou shall go quicklyʺ
173:	da izvádišь móšti te stě´i pét'ky,	ʺand you shall retrieve the relics of St Petkaʺ
174:	i da gỳ ostávišь u kóvčegь zlatь.	ʺand you shall put them to a golden coffinʺ
175:	zaštò crь požáli njéina dobrynà.	ʺfor the King craves for her virtueʺ
176:	i štè gь segà da ja proslávi po síč'ki světь.	ʺand now Lord will spread her fame in the whole worldʺ
177:	Togázi i tïá mu samâ podúma.	then she spoke to him herself:
178:	skóro izvadě´te moí te móšti,	ʺretrieve my relics quicklyʺ
179:	i položě´te gi na xúbavo mě´sto.	ʺand put them on a nice placeʺ
180:	Zašto ne mógu da trьpę^ ázь za mnw^go tóĭzi smrád.	ʺbecause I can't suffer that stench anymoreʺ
181:	ne boíš li se ba, da nè by^ pústilь bь óg'nь da vŷ popáli.	ʺdon't you fear God that he'd cast fire to burn you?ʺ
182:	i áz es'mь člkь wt máĭka i wt baštь^ ródena,	ʺand I am a human (too), born from a mother and a fatherʺ
183:	i moà báštnina ta ê epiváty štotó go zovь´tь, i déto ste výe segà na njégo.	ʺand my fatherland (is) Epibates, as you call it and where do you live nowʺ
184:	I prěz tь´zi nóštь drúgaa ženâ xrstïán'ka, íme to ì eftímïe, i tïà takvózi vidě´la.	and in that night another woman, a good Christian, her name was Efimia, saw such (a vision)
185:	i takvízy dúmy i njéi rékle	and they said such words to her
186:	i zarь´čale.	and commanded:
187:	skóro útrě ráno da kážete tovâ da vi^ wt ba óg'nь ne izgorì.	ʺyou shall tell that early in the morning, so that you won't be burned down by the fire of Godʺ
188:	I naútrě izlě´zoxa i dvaʺ ta,	and the both went out in the morning
189:	i kázaxa na síčki te támo po konécь.	and told to all who where there to the end
190:	I katô čjúxa tovà epivát'scïi ljúdïe, skóro síč'ki te tékoxa	and as the people of Epibates heard it, they all hurried (to the grave)
191:	i sьs golě´ma rádostь izvádixa móšti te ì, katô ně´koe mnw^gocě´n'noe skriválište.	and they retrieved her relics with great joy, as a very precious treasure
192:	i mnw^go se čjúdixa na njéino to tě´lo,	and they wondered a lot about her body
