| 430: | avva zosima pogrěbi tělo směrenie marie sie iže obrěte | Father Zosima, bury the body of this humble Mary, which you have found |
| 431: | i mli ba o mně radi | and pray God for my sake |
| 432: | skončax že se vъ mscъ farmuѳia sireč aprilia vъ nošti onoi ideže pričestix se | I have passed away in the month of Parmouti, that is April, in the night when I took the Eucharist |
| 433: | sia pisania jakože vidě zosima čjuždaše se kto ix sъpisa | as Zosima saw these writings, he wondered, who has written them |
| 434: | rekla bo bě emu sta kako ne věstъ pisania | because she had told him, that she does not know how to write |
| i kako dva dsetъ dni puta vъ edinъ čas poide staa | and (he wondered) how the saint could pass 20 days of walk in an hour | |
| 435: | i proče čjuždaše se paki sъ čimъ iskopati zemlju | and also he wondered how to dig the ground |
| 436: | tamo vidě malo drěvo dolě na zemli povrъženno | he saw there a small piece of wood thrown on the ground |
| 437: | i načetъ sъ nimi kopati zemlju | and he began to dig the ground with it (them) |
| 438: | i ne vъzmože | and he could not |
| 439: | jako bě starъ | because he was old |
| 440: | nъ i město bě mnogo suxo | but also the place was very dry |
| 441: | i abie vidě edinogo lъva iže ližaše nozě stěi | and suddenly he saw a lion, licking the saintʹs legs |
| 442: | i jakože ego vidě ouboa se | and as he saw (the beast), he became afraid |
| 443: | jako vъspominaše slovo stěi ideže rče jako źvěra ne vidě vъ četiri dsetъ lět | because he remembered the word of the saint, (where she said) that she did not saw a beast in forty years |
| 444: | proče sъtvori krstъ svoi | then he crossed himself |
| 445: | i naděe se ne vrěditi ego | and he hoped to not harm him |
| 446: | i otvěšta kъ lъvu | and he said (answered) to the lion |
| 447: | i rče | and said: |
| 448: | o źvěru ne ukrotimi poneže sila bžia prinesla te est zde pomošti mi | o untameable beast, as the power of God has brought you here to help me, |
| iskopai zemlju pogrebsti stěi mošti | dig the ground to bury the relics of the saint! | |
| 449: | jako esmъ azъ starъ | because I am old |
| 450: | i ne vъzmogu niže kopati niže poiti prinesti dělania kopati | and I cannot dig nor bring tools (?) for digging |
| 451: | i sego radi ti sъtvori grobъ stěi | for this reason, you do make a grave for the saint |
| 452: | sice rče starcъ | thus spoke the elder |
| 453: | i abie lъvъ vъzъmъ sъ prědnimi nogami | and the lion quickly began (to dig) with his forward legs |
| 454: | i iskopa eliko pokriti tělo stěi | and he dug out so much (as needed) to cover the body of the saint |
| 455: | i jakože iskopa sъtvori metania kъ starcu | and as he finished digging, he did a prayer towards the elder |
| 456: | i vъnide vъnutrъ pustini | and he went into the desert |
| 457: | starcъ že pogrebe tělo stie tamo ideže ju obrěšte | the elder then buried the body of the saint where he found her |
| 458: | i vъzvrati se vъ monastirъ slavešti i pojušti ba | and he returned to the monastery praising and singing to God |
| 459: | nъ igumenъ ioannъ obrěte mnogaa prěgrěšenia vъ monastiri jakože rče sta | but abbot John found many sins in the monastery, as the saint said |
| 460: | tamo bo vъ tom mostiri skonča se starcъ zosima *r* lět starosti | the elder Zosima passed away there in that monastery (being) 100 years old |
| 461: | sia sutъ děla bludnici ljubimici | These are the deeds of the harlot, my dear |
| 462: | si sut dobroděteli ouničiženie ženi | these are the virtues of a despicable woman |
| 463: | bludnica po istině bě | she was truly a harlot |
| 464: | nъ i velikie dobrodětelie ee spdobiše ju vъ crstvi nbsněmъ | but also her great virtues made her worthy for (in) the Kingdom of Heaven |
| 465: | grěšnaa bě | she was sinful |
| 466: | nъ i pokaaniemъ spse se | but she saved herself by penance |
| 467: | zane da vidimъ kako posti se | so that we see her fasting |
| 468: | da vdimъ kako trudi se | so (that) we see how she worked |
| 469: | ne bě li taa grěšnica | wasnʹt she a sinner? |
| 470: | ne bě li i ta uničižena | wasnʹt she contemptous? |
| 471: | sego radi i i mi da pokaem se o grěsěx našix | for this reason, also we should repent about our sins |
| 472: | i da ne pademъ vъ otčaanie ašte i jakože peskъ morskii sut sъgrěšenia naša | and we should not fall into depression, if you sins are numerous as the sand of the sea |
| 473: | něst ni edinъ grěx ideže bolitъ mlstъ bžia | there is no sin, which surpasses (?) the mercy of God |
| 474: | niže est nikoe prěgrěšenie iže ne ispravljaet se pokaaniemъ | nor is there any transgression, which cannot be amended by penance |
| 475: | priemlet bъ pokaaniemъ vъsakomu | God accepts the penance of anyone |
| 476: | tъčiju prilěžne da obratim se | (he needs) only to turn away (from the sin) accordingly |
| 477: | sъ vъsem srdcemъ da kaem se | let us repent with all heart |
| 478: | i priemletъ nas bъ | and God will accept us |
| 479: | jako est mlsrdъ i mngo mlstivъ | because he is gracious and very merciful |
| 480: | i da ne glemъ jako da tvorim grěxi mnogi i poslěžde xoštem kaati se | and let us not say that we should do many sins and afterwards we will repent |
| 481: | jako kto trъžъstvuetъ tako spsenie ego ne spdobljaetъ bъ takovago pokaati se | who makes such a trade out of salvation, God does not make him worthy to repent |
| 482: | i čto věmъ ašte i do včera umrem | and do we know, whether we will not die until the evening? |
| 483: | ili kogda razuměimъ čas sъmrъti našei | or when we will know the hour of our death? |
| 484: | sego radi povelě gъ vъ stmъ eѵglii | that is why the Lord said in the holy Gospel: |
| 485: | bdite jako ne věstě dnъ ni čas vъ nže snъ člčski priidet | Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour in which the Son of Man is coming (Mt 25:13 NKJV) |
| 486: | i poneže ne věmi čas sъmrъti našei da ne lenim se spsenia našego | and because we do not know the hour of our death, let us not be lazy about our salvation |
| 487: | da ne otčaim se dobroti dši našei | let us not despair about the good of our souls |
| 488: | zane lěnostъ nikogda dobro ne ispravljaetъ | because sloth never does any good |
| 489: | nikogda blgo ne sъvrъšaetъ niže tělesnoe niže dševnoe | it never finishes any good: neither corporeal, nor spiritual |
| 490: | i jakože kto ašte oblěnit se nivě svoei ili loziju svoemu i ne okopavaetъ ju pogubljaetъ se ot trъniemъ i biliemъ | (and) as when someone is lazy on his acre or in his vineyard and does not cultivate it, it is lost to thorns and weed |
| 491: | tako est i vъ dši vъsakomu xrstianinu | so it is also with the soul of every Christian |
| 492: | egda oblěnit se člkъ dělaniju bžiju i prinošenie dši ego abie pogibaetъ dša člku onomu ot pomišlenia zla ot mъčtania běsovska i ot ina naxoždenia lukava | when a human is lazy in divine works and in helping his soul, suddenly his soul is lost to that man because of bad thoughts, of devilish dreams, and other evil ideas |
| 493: | sego radi podbaetъ ne leniti se dobroti dše našei | that is why it is good not to be lazy about the goodness of our soul |
| 494: | i glemъ | and (it is not good to) speak: |
| 495: | dnsъ grěxi da sъtvaraemъ | let us do sins today |
| 496: | i zautra xoštem pokaati se | and tomorrow we will repent |
| 497: | vъ junosti našei da sъgrěšenie tvorim | let us sin in our youth |
| 498: | i vъ starosti našei xoštemъ kaati se | and we will repent in our old age |
| 499: | zane takova pomišlenia sut lukavago diavola iže dobroti dšamъ našim ne xoštet | because such thoughts are from the evil Devil, who does not want the good for our souls |
| 500: | ašte vъ junosti našei ne xoštem pokaati se ideže možem rabotati kanona dxovnika našego | if we will not repent in our youth, where we can work according to our religion (regulations of our clergy ?) |
| kako pokaem se vъ starosti našei ideže ne moštni tělesem našeimъ | then, how we will (be able to) repent in our old age, when we are bodily weak? | |
| iže ne možemъ niže pokaati se niže postiti se niže bděti niže ini trud tvoriti grěx radi našix | then, we can neither repent, nor fast, nor stay awake, nor perform any work for the sake of our sins | |
| 501: | nnja ideže imami vrěme | (it is) now, when we have time |
| 502: | nnja da pokaem se vъsako | (it is) now (the time) to do any penance |
| 503: | dnsъ ideže tvorimъ grěxi dnsъ ispovědaim se | today we sin, today we confess |
| 504: | zane jakože glet prěmǫdri solomonъ | because, as the most wise Solomon says: |
| ne věmi čto raditъ zautra | we know not what (will be there) to do tomorrow (cf. Preacher 7:14) | |
| 505: | sirečъ ne věmi čto xoštet biti daže do utra | that is, we do not know, what will be even tomorrow |
| 506: | da ne javljaemъ sebe jako besъmrъtni | let us not consider ourselves to be deathless |
| 507: | da ne sъgrěšaemъ jako eže ne xoštem umreti kogda | let us not sin as if we were not ever going to die |
| 508: | nъ razuměvaimъ jako kratkъ i vrěmeni est životъ naš | but let us understand that our life is short and temporal |
| da ispravim sami sebě | let us mend ourselves | |
| 509: | da otvratim volju našu vъ blgoe | let us turn our will to good |
| 510: | da izměnim oumišlenia naša kъ polzi dši našei | let us change our thoughts for the profit of our soul |
| 511: | ne pomišljaimъ tъkmo kako obogatiti se ili kako oblěšti se ili kako pitati se | Let us not think only about how to get rich or clothe or feed ourselves |
| 512: | nъ pače množae da pomišljaimъ kako ugoditi xu kako da sъvrъšim dobrodětelъ kako da ulučim crstvie nbsnoe | but let us think more about how to please Christ, how to gain virtue, how to receive the Kingdom of Heaven |
| 513: | zane i gъ tako namъ zapověda vъ stmъ eѵglii | because thus tells us the Lord in the Holy Gospel |
| 514: | i gletъ | and He says: |
| 515: | ne pecete se dšeju vašeju što jaste ili čto piete niže tělom vašimъ vъ čto oblěcěte se | do not worry in your souls, what you will eat˸ or about your body, what you will wear (Lk 12:22) |
| 516: | ne dša li bolše est pišti i tělo oděždi | is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? (23) |
| 517: | sireč ne pomišljaite vъnutrъ dšax vašix čto jaste ili piete | that is: do not worry inside your souls, what you will eat or drink |
| 518: | niže iměite pomišlenia vъ čto oblěčete telěsi vašego | nor think of in what you clothe your body |
| 519: | něst li dša vaša bolšaa ot astia | is not the soul more than food? |
| 520: | něst li tělesa vaša bolša ot oděžde | is not your body more than the clothes? |
| 521: | skazuetъ jako eže oumišljaetě radi jastia iže něst ničtože kako ne pecěte se i dše svoee radi iže est vešt čъstněiša vъsego mira | he says, that what you think about food is in vain, if you donʹt care about your soul, which is something more precious than the whole world |
| 522: | i paki povelě po dolě gъ | and again, he says below: |
| 523: | vъzrite na ptici nbsni | look at the heavenly birds (Lk 12:24) |
| 524: | jako ni sejutъ | they do not sow |
| 525: | ni žnut | nor they reap |
| 526: | ni sъbirajutъ vъ žitnici | nor they have no barn |
| 527: | i otcъ vašъ nbsnii pitaetъ e | and your heavenly Father feeds them |
| 528: | ne vi li lučšii estě oněx | are you not better than these? |
| 529: | kto že li ot vas pešti se možetъ priložiti vъzrastu svoemu lъkatъ edinъ | and who among you can add a cubit to your life? (25) |
| 530: | sirěč viditě na ptice ideže lětajutъ po vъzduxu | that is: you see (to) the birds, which (where) they fly in the sky |
| 531: | kako ni sějutъ | as they do not sow |
| 532: | ni žnut | nor they reap |
| 533: | niže sъbirajutъ vъ žitnice | nor they have no barn to collect in |
| 534: | i bъ otcъ vъsem pitaetъ texъ | and God the All-Father feeds them with everything |
| 535: | vi že bo člci ne izměnenili estě množae ot těx | are you not, humans, better than these? |
| 536: | kto že li ot vasъ umisliti možet priložiti tělesi svoemu lъkat edin | and who among you, worrying, can add a cubit to your body? |
| 537: | i paki povělě | and again, he speaks: |
| 538: | o oděžde čto pečete se | why are you anxious about clothes? |
| 539: | vъzrite na krini selnie | look at the wild flowers (Lk 12:27-28) |
| 540: | kako rastǫtъ | how they grow |
| 541: | ne truždajut se | they do not labor |
| 542: | ni prědut | nor they spin |
| 543: | glju že vamъ | yet I tell you |
| 544: | jako ni solomonъ vъ vsei slavě svoei oblěče se jako edinъ ot six | not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these |
| 545: | ašte že seno selnoe dnsъ sušte i utre vъ peštъ vъlagaemo bъ tako ostavljaetъ kolmi pače vasъ malověri | if that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into fire, how much more will He clothe you, you of little faith? |
| 546: | sirěč počto radi umišljaete radi odežde | that is: why do you think of clothes? |
| 547: | pone razuměite cvětie polskoe | think at least of the wild flowers |
| 548: | kako rastut | how they grow |
| 549: | ne truždajut se | they do not labor |
| 550: | niže prědut | nor they spin |
| 551: | glju vamъ | yet I tell you |
| 552: | jakože ni solomonъ vъ mnozěx ego krasotax i čъsti ne oblěče se jakože edinъ ot six oblěšti se takovoju krasotu jakože sut oukrašenna cvětia | not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these |
| 553: | ašte že sěno polskoe ideže dnsъ est i zautra vъlagajutъ vъ peštъ i sъgaraetъ bъ oděvaetъ i oukrašaetъ tako koliko pače vas malověri ne xoštet li vi oblěšti | if that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into fire, how much more will He clothe you, you of little faith? |
| 554: | ne oubo pečete se gljušte čto jami ili čto piemъ ili čimъ oblěcěm se | do not worry, saying , ʹwhat we eatʹ or ʹwhat we drinkʹ or ʹwhat to put onʹ (cf. Lk 12:29-30) |
| 555: | vъsěx bo six ezičnici ištut | for this is what the heathens want |
| 556: | věstъ bo otcъ vašъ nbsnii jako trěbuete vъsa siix | and your Father knows that you need them |
| 557: | ištete prěžde crstvia bžia i pravdi ego | seek first His Kingdom and His truth |
| 558: | i sia vъsa priložit se vam | and this all will be included |
| 559: | sireč proče ne pomišljaite gljušte što jami ili čto piemъ ili čimъ oděždim se | that is: do not worry, saying , ʹwhat we eatʹ or ʹwhat we drinkʹ or ʹwhat to put onʹ |
| 560: | zane sia vъsa ęzici ištut | for this is what all the heathens want |
| 561: | zane bъ otcъ vašъ iže est na nbsěxъ věstъ trěbovania sia vъsa | and your Father knows that you need them |
| 562: | sego radi ištete prъvěe crstvie bžie i pravdi ego | thus seek first His Kingdom and His truth |
| 563: | i sia vъsa sъviše podaet se | and this all will be given to you from above |
| 564: | proče i imi ljubimici ne pomišljaimъ takovaa | let us think us too, my dear |
| 565: | nъ dšamъ našim prinošenia da pomišljaimъ | but let us think of spiritual gain |
| 566: | spseniju našemu da poučaim se | let us gain knowledge for the sake of salvation |
| 567: | dšamъ našim da potaštim se kako pitaniixъ sъ slovom bžiemъ | let us struggle for the sake of our souls by feeding them with the Word of God |
| 568: | dšamъ našim da potъštim se kako napoiti ix sъ učeniemъ bgougodnix | let us struggle for the sake of our souls by giving them to drink of the teachings of those, who are pleasing to God |
| 569: | dši naše da ponudim kako oblěšti se sъ dobrodětelmi | let us train our souls how to clothe themselves in virtues |
| 570: | radi da nas spdobitъ xs zde prěiti zdrava bespečalni blgodnъstavni ne blaznъni ot vragovъ dševniix i tělesniix | so that Christ will find us worthy, here (beyond?) to come healthy, without despair, virtuous, not seduced by enemies of the soul and of the body |
| 571: | tamože nas da spdobitъ věčnaago ego crstvia | there He will make us worthy of His eternal Kingdom |
| 572: | jako tomu pdobaetъ slva čstii i poklanjanie sъ beznačelnim ego ocemъ i prěstmъ i blgimъ i životvoreštiimъ ego dxomъ | for His is the glory, honor and respect, with beginning-less Father of Him, and with Most Holy and good and life-giving Spirit |
| nnja i prsno i vъ věki věkom | now and ever and forever | |
| 573: | amin | amen |
