| 313: | ѿ толѣ даже до днс҄ь съ помо́щїю прѣчс҄тыю ми, не ҆имѣю̀ никою̀ досáдꙋ, | since then, up until today, with the help of the Most Pure , I have no annoyance |
Zosima spoke to her: |

| because He puts clouds onto heavens (Ps 146:8) |

| and he said to her: |
| 327: | вѣ́си ли ст҃а моà ѿ пи́сани; | does my saint know of the Scriptures? |
| 328: | ҆илѝ на҆ꙋчи́ те кто̂; | or by whom have you been taught? |
| the saint spoke to him: |
| 330: | ҆аввâ зосимâ, ӑзь чл҃ка ҆є́ще не ви́дѣх ѿне́лиже прїи́дохʹ зде̏, | o Father Zosima, I did not see a man since I came here |

| for that pray to God, o Father Zosima, for my sinful self |
| thus the saint spoke |

| 336: | тогдà ко́снꙋ се ҆ємꙋ̂ ст҃а | then saint interrupted him |

| she just said to him: |
| o Father Zosima, about this, what I told you and you heard, be aware not to tell (show) that to anyone, until I die |

| 439: | ҆ꙗко бѣ стáрь | because he was old |
| but also the place was very dry |
| 441: | ҆и ҆áбїе ви́дѣ ҆єди́ного лъвâ ҆и́же лижаше но́зѣ ст҃ѣѝ | and suddenly he saw a lion, licking the saintʹs legs |

| 444: | проч҄е сътво́ри крс҄ть своѝ, | then he crossed himself |
| 445: | ҆и надѣє̆ се не врѣ́дитї ҆єго̀, | and he hoped to not harm him |
| 446: | ҆и ѿвѣ́ща къ лъ́вꙋ | and he said (answered) to the lion |

| thus spoke the elder |
| 453: | ҆и ҆абїѐ лъ́вь възъмь съ прѣдни́ми но́гами | and the lion quickly began (to dig) with his forward legs |
| 454: | ҆и ҆иско́па ҆єли́ко покрити тѣло ст҃ѣи, | and he dug out so much (as needed) to cover the body of the saint |

| the elder then buried the body of the saint where he found her |
| and he returned to the monastery praising and singing to God |
| but abbot John found many sins in the monastery, as the saint said |
стáрости, | the elder Zosima passed away there in that monastery (being) 100 years old |
| These are the deeds of the harlot, my dear |
| these are the virtues of a despicable woman |
| 463: | блꙋдница по ҆исти́нѣ бѣ̏, | she was truly a harlot |
| but also her great virtues made her worthy for (in) the Kingdom of Heaven |
| 465: | грѣ́шнаа бѣ̏, | she was sinful |
| but she saved herself by penance |
| so that we see her fasting |
| so (that) we see how she worked |
| 469: | не бѣ ли та̏а грѣшни[ца]; | wasnʹt she a sinner? |
| for this reason, also we should repent about our sins |
| and we should not fall into depression, if you sins are numerous as the sand of the sea |
| there is no sin, which surpasses (?) the mercy of God |
| nor is there any transgression, which cannot be amended by penance |
| God accepts the penance of anyone |
| (he needs) only to turn away (from the sin) accordingly |
| let us repent with all heart |
| and God will accept us |
| because he is gracious and very merciful |
| and let us not say that we should do many sins and afterwards we will repent |
| who makes such a trade out of salvation, God does not make him worthy to repent |
| 482: | ҆и что̂ вѣ́мь ӑще ҆и до вч҄ера ҆ꙋмрем; | and do we know, whether we will not die until the evening? |
| 483: | ҆илѝ когда разꙋмѣймь чáс҄ съмръ́ти нашеѝ, | or when we will know the hour of our death? |
| 484: | сего рад̀ повелѣ̀ г҃ь въ ст҃мь ҆єѵг҄лїи, | that is why the Lord said in the holy Gospel: |
Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour in which the Son of Man is coming (Mt 25:13 NKJV) |
| and because we do not know the hour of our death, let us not be lazy about our salvation |
| let us not despair about the good of our souls |
| because sloth never does any good |
| it never finishes any good: neither corporeal, nor spiritual |
| 490: | ҆и ҆ꙗко́же кто̂ ӑще ҆ѡблѣ́нит се нивѣ̀ сво҆еѝ ҆илѝ лози́ю своӗмꙋ ҆и не ҆ѡкопавáеть ю, погꙋблꙗ́еть се ѿ тръ́нїемь ҆и бы́лїемь | (and) as when someone is lazy on his acre or in his vineyard and does not cultivate it, it is lost to thorns and weed |
| so it is also with the soul of every Christian |
| when a human is lazy in divine works and in helping his soul, suddenly his soul is lost to that man because of bad thoughts, of devilish dreams, and other evil ideas |
| 493: | се́го радѝ подбаеть не ленити се до́броТи дш҃е нáшеи, | that is why it is good not to be lazy about the goodness of our soul |
| 494: | ҆и гл҃е́мь, | and (it is not good to) speak: |
| 495: | днс҄ь грѣхы да сътвáраемь, | let us do sins today |
| and tomorrow we will repent |
| 497: | въ ҆юности нáшеи да съгрѣшенїе творим, | let us sin in our youth |
| and we will repent in our old age |
| because such thoughts are from the evil Devil, who does not want the good for our souls |
| 500: | ӑще въ ю̆ности нáшеи не хо́щем покаáти се, ҆идеж҄ можем рáботати кáнона дх҃овника нáшего, | if we will not repent in our youth, where we can work according to our religion (regulations of our clergy ?) |
| then, how we will (be able to) repent in our old age, when we are bodily weak? | |
| then, we can neither repent, nor fast, nor stay awake, nor perform any work for the sake of our sins | |
| (it is) now, when we have time |
| (it is) now (the time) to do any penance |
днс҄ь ҆исповѣдаи́м се, | today we sin, today we confess |
| 504: | занѐ ҆ꙗкож҄ глет҄ прѣмѫ́дри соломонь, | because, as the most wise Solomon says: |
| we know not what (will be there) to do tomorrow (cf. Preacher 7:14) | |
| 505: | си̏ре́чь не вѣ́ми что̂ хо́щет҄ бы́ти дáже до ҆ꙋтрà, | that is, we do not know, what will be even tomorrow |
| let us not consider ourselves to be deathless |
| let us not sin as if we were not ever going to die |
| but let us understand that our life is short and temporal |
| let us mend ourselves | |
| let us turn our will to good |
| 510: | да ҆измѣним ҆оумы́шленїа нáша къ полʹзы дш҃и нáшеи, | let us change our thoughts for the profit of our soul |
| Let us not think only about how to get rich or clothe or feed ourselves |
| but let us think more about how to please Christ, how to gain virtue, how to receive the Kingdom of Heaven |
| 513: | занѐ ҆и г҃ь тáко нáмь зáповѣда въ ст҄мь ҆єѵг҄лїи | because thus tells us the Lord in the Holy Gospel |
| and He says: |
| do not worry in your souls, what you will eat˸ or about your body, what you will wear (Lk 12:22) |
| 516: | не дш҃а ли бо́лше єс҄ пи́щи ҆и тѣло ҆одѣжды; | is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? (23) |
| 517: | сы̏реч не помы́шлꙗи́те вънꙋтръ дш҃ах вáших что̂ ꙗ́сте ҆илѝ пїете, | that is: do not worry inside your souls, what you will eat or drink |
| nor think of in what you clothe your body |
| is not the soul more than food? |
| 520: | нѣс҄ ли тѣлесà вáша болʹша ѿ ҆ѡдѣ́жде; | is not your body more than the clothes? |
| he says, that what you think about food is in vain, if you donʹt care about your soul, which is something more precious than the whole world |
| 522: | ҆и пакы̀ повелѣ̀ по до́лѣ г҃ь, | and again, he says below: |
| 523: | възрите на птици нбс҄ны, | look at the heavenly birds (Lk 12:24) |
| 524: | ҆ꙗко нѝ се́ютъ | they do not sow |
| 526: | ни събы́рають въ жи́тници, | nor they have no barn |
| 527: | ҆и ѿц҃ъ вáшь нбс҄ныи пи́таеть е, | and your heavenly Father feeds them |
| 528: | не ви́ ли лꙋчшїи є̆стѣ ҆ѡнѣх, | are you not better than these? |
| 529: | кто̂ же ли ѿ вас҄ пе́щи се мо́жеть приложи́ти възрáстꙋ своӗмꙋ̂ лъкать ҆єди́нь, | and who among you can add a cubit to your life? (25) |
| 530: | си̏рѣч҄ ви́дитѣ на пти́це ҆иде́же лѣ́тають по въздꙋхꙋ, | that is: you see (to) the birds, which (where) they fly in the sky |
| 531: | кáко ни сѣ́ють | as they do not sow |
| 533: | нижѐ събы́рають въ жи́тнице, | nor they have no barn to collect in |
| 534: | ҆и б҃ъ ѿц҃ъ въсем питаеть те́хь, | and God the All-Father feeds them with everything |
| 535: | вы̏ же бо̂ чл҃цы не ҆измѣненили ҆єстѣ мно́жае ѿ тѣ́х; | are you not, humans, better than these? |
| and who among you, worrying, can add a cubit to your body? |
| 537: | ҆и пакы̀ повѣлѣ̀ | and again, he speaks: |
| why are you anxious about clothes? |
| 539: | възриТе на кри́ны селные, | look at the wild flowers (Lk 12:27-28) |
| 540: | кáко растѫ́ть, | how they grow |
| they do not labor |
| nor they spin |
| 543: | гл҃ю же вáмь | yet I tell you |
| not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these |
| 545: | ӑще же се́но се́лное днс҄ь сꙋ́ще, ҆и ҆ꙋтрѐ въ пе́щь вълагае́мо, б҃ъ тáко ҆ѡставлꙗ́еть, ко́лми пáче вась мáловѣ́ры, | if that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into fire, how much more will He clothe you, you of little faith? |
| that is: why do you think of clothes? |
| 547: | поне разꙋмѣи́те цвѣ́тїе полʹское, | think at least of the wild flowers |
| 548: | кáко рáстꙋтʹ | how they grow |
| 549: | не трꙋждаю́т се, | they do not labor |
| nor they spin |
| 551: | гл҃ю вáмь | yet I tell you |
| not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these |
| 553: | ӑще же сѣ́но полʹское ҆иде́же днс҄ь єс҄, ҆и заут҄рà вълагають въ пе́щь ҆и съгáраеть, б҃ъ ҆ѡдѣ́ваеть ҆и ҆оу́крáшаеть тáко, ко́лико паче вас мáловѣры нε хо́щет ли ви ҆ѡблѣ́щи, | if that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into fire, how much more will He clothe you, you of little faith? |
| 554: | не ҆оу́бо печете с҄ гл҃ю́ще, чТо̀ ҆ꙗмѝ, ҆илѝ что̂ пїемь ҆или чимь ҆ѡблѣцѣм се, | do not worry, saying , ʹwhat we eatʹ or ʹwhat we drinkʹ or ʹwhat to put onʹ (cf. Lk 12:29-30) |
| for this is what the heathens want |
| and your Father knows that you need them |
| 557: | ҆ище́те прѣжде црс҄твїа бж҃ı́а ҆и прáвды ҆єго̀ | seek first His Kingdom and His truth |
| and this all will be included |
| that is: do not worry, saying , ʹwhat we eatʹ or ʹwhat we drinkʹ or ʹwhat to put onʹ |
| for this is what all the heathens want |
| and your Father knows that you need them |
| thus seek first His Kingdom and His truth |
| and this all will be given to you from above |
| let us think us too, my dear |
| but let us think of spiritual gain |
| let us gain knowledge for the sake of salvation |
| let us struggle for the sake of our souls by feeding them with the Word of God |
| let us struggle for the sake of our souls by giving them to drink of the teachings of those, who are pleasing to God |
| let us train our souls how to clothe themselves in virtues |
| so that Christ will find us worthy, here (beyond?) to come healthy, without despair, virtuous, not seduced by enemies of the soul and of the body |
| there He will make us worthy of His eternal Kingdom |
| for His is the glory, honor and respect, with beginning-less Father of Him, and with Most Holy and good and life-giving Spirit |
| нн҃ꙗ ҆и прс҄но ҆и въ вѣкы̀ вѣкѡм, | now and ever and forever | |
| 573: | ҆амин҄:♣ | amen |
