ʾi vъzvráti se vъ monas҄tírь slávešti ʾi pojúšti b҃a. and he returned to the monastery praising and singing to God
nь^ ʾigúmenь ʾıʾwánnь obrě´te mnwgaa prěgrěšénïa vъ monas҄tíri, ʾjakóže rč҄e st҃a. but abbot John found many sins in the monastery, as the saint said
támo bw` vъ tom mostíri skončá se starcь zosimâ .r҃, lě´t҄. stárosti, the elder Zosima passed away there in that monastery (being) 100 years old
Sï´a sutь dě´la bludnici ljúbymici. These are the deeds of the harlot, my dear
sȉ sut҄ dobrodě´teli ʾouničižénïe ženỳ. these are the virtues of a despicable woman
bludnica po ʾistíně bě̏, she was truly a harlot
nь̏ ʾi velíkye dobrodětelïe єˇe, spdobyše ju vъ crs҄tvy nbs҄němь. but also her great virtues made her worthy for (in) the Kingdom of Heaven
 grě´šnaa bě̏, she was sinful
nь^ ʾi pokaánïemь sp҃sé se. but she saved herself by penance
zanè da vidímь kako pósti se. so that we see her fasting
da vdímь [káko] trúdi se. so (that) we see how she worked
ne bě li tȁa grěšni[ca]; wasnʹt she a sinner?
ne bě̏ li ʾi tȁ ʾuničížena; wasnʹt she contemptous?
ségo radì ʾi ʾí my̏ da pokaém se ʾw grěsě´x našix. for this reason, also we should repent about our sins
ʾi da ne pádemь vъ wtčaánye, ăšte ʾi ʾjakóže peskь mórʹskyi, sút҄ sъgrěšenïa náša. and we should not fall into depression, if you sins are numerous as the sand of the sea
ně´s҄ ni ʾєdínь grě´x ʾidéže bolitь mls҄tь bž҃ï´a. there is no sin, which surpasses (?) the mercy of God
nižè єs҄ nikoe prěgrě´šenïe, ʾíže ne ʾispravljáet se pokaánïemь. nor is there any transgression, which cannot be amended by penance
prïémlet҄ b҃ъ pokaánïemь vъsákomu. God accepts the penance of anyone
tъčïju prilěžne da ʾwbrátim se. (he needs) only to turn away (from the sin) accordingly
sъ vъsem srdcemь da kaєˇm se. let us repent with all heart
ʾi prïémletь nas҄ b҃ъ. and God will accept us
ʾjako єs҄ mls҄rdь ʾi mng҄o mls҄tívь. because he is gracious and very merciful
ʾi da ne gl҃emь ʾjako da tvorim grě´xy mnógy, ʾi poslěžde xoštem kaáti se. and let us not say that we should do many sins and afterwards we will repent
ʾjako kTo trьžьsTvuetь táko sp҃senïe ʾєgò, ne spdobljáetь b҃ъ tákovago pokaati se. who makes such a trade out of salvation, God does not make him worthy to repent
ʾi čtô vě´mь ăšte ʾi do vč҄era ʾumrem; and do we know, whether we will not die until the evening?
ʾilì kogda razuměĭmь čás҄ sъmrъ´ti našeì, or when we will know the hour of our death?
sego rad` povelě` g҃ь vъ st҃mь ʾєѵg҄lïi, that is why the Lord said in the holy Gospel:
bditè, ʾjako ne věstě dn҃ь, nì čás҄, vъ nže sn҃ь čl҃čsky prïídet҄, Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour in which the Son of Man is coming (Mt 25:13 NKJV)
ʾi ponéže ne věmi čas҄ sъmrъ`ti nášei, da ne lénim se sp҃sénïa nášego. and because we do not know the hour of our death, let us not be lazy about our salvation
da ne wtčaím se dobroti dš҃i našeì. let us not despair about the good of our souls
zanè lě´nostь nikogdà dóbro ne ʾispravljáetь. because sloth never does any good
nìkogdà bl҃go ne sъvrъ´šaetь. nìže tělésnoe nìže dš҃evnoe. it never finishes any good: neither corporeal, nor spiritual
ʾi ʾjakóže ktô ăšte ʾwblě´nit se nivě` svoʾeì ʾilì lozíju svoeˇmu ʾi ne ʾwkopaváetь ju, pogubljáetь se wt trъ´nïemь ʾi býlïemь (and) as when someone is lazy on his acre or in his vineyard and does not cultivate it, it is lost to thorns and weed
táko єs҄ ʾi vъ dš҃i vъsákomu xrs҄tï´áninu. so it is also with the soul of every Christian
ʾєgdà ʾwblě´nit se čl҃kь dělánïju bž҃ı´ju ʾi prinošénïe dš҃i ʾєgò, ʾábïe pogýbaetь dš҃a čl҃ku ʾwnómu wt pomýšlenïa zlȁ, wt mъčtanïa běsw´vska. ʾi wt ʾína naxóždenïa lukava. when a human is lazy in divine works and in helping his soul, suddenly his soul is lost to that man because of bad thoughts, of devilish dreams, and other evil ideas
ségo radì podbaetь ne leniti se dóbroTi dš҃e nášei, that is why it is good not to be lazy about the goodness of our soul
ʾi gl҃émь, and (it is not good to) speak:
dns҄ь grěxy da sъtváraemь, let us do sins today
ʾi zaуt҄ra xoštem pokaáti se. and tomorrow we will repent
vъ ʾjunosti nášei da sъgrěšenïe tvorim, let us sin in our youth
ʾi vъ stárosti nášei xoštemь kaáti se. and we will repent in our old age
zanè tákova pomýšlenïa sút҄ lukavago dïávola. ʾíže dóbroti dš҃amь našim ne xóštet҄. because such thoughts are from the evil Devil, who does not want the good for our souls
ăšte vъ juˇnosti nášei ne xóštem pokaáti se, ʾidež҄ možem rábotati kánona dx҃ovnika nášego, if we will not repent in our youth, where we can work according to our religion (regulations of our clergy ?)
káko pokaém se vъ stárosti našeì ʾidéže ne moštʹni tělesem nášeimь. then, how we will (be able to) repent in our old age, when we are bodily weak?
ĭže ne móžemь nižè pokaáti se, nižè póstiti se. nižè bdě´ti nižè ʾinì trud tvóriti grě´x radì nášix. then, we can neither repent, nor fast, nor stay awake, nor perform any work for the sake of our sins
nnja ʾidéže ʾimami vrě´me. (it is) now, when we have time
nn҃ja da pokaém se vъsáko. (it is) now (the time) to do any penance
dns҄ь ʾidéže tvorímь grě´xy. dns҄ь ʾispovědaím se, today we sin, today we confess
zanè ʾjakož҄ glet҄ prěmǫ´dri solomonь, because, as the most wise Solomon says:
ne vě´mi čtô ráditь zaуt҄rà. we know not what (will be there) to do tomorrow (cf. Preacher 7:14)
sȉréčь ne vě´mi čtô xóštet҄ býti dáže do ʾutrà, that is, we do not know, what will be even tomorrow
da ne ʾjavljáemь sebe ʾjako besъmrъ`tny. let us not consider ourselves to be deathless
da ne sъgrěšaemь ʾjako ʾє´že ne xoštem ʾumréti kogda. let us not sin as if we were not ever going to die
nь^ razúměvaímь ʾjako krátkь ʾi vrě´meny єs҄ žívotь náš҄. but let us understand that our life is short and temporal
da ʾispravim sámi sebě. let us mend ourselves
da wtvrátim volju nášu vъ bl҃goe. let us turn our will to good
da ʾizměnim ʾoumýšlenïa náša kъ polʹzy dš҃i nášei, let us change our thoughts for the profit of our soul
ne pomýšljaimь tъkmo káko ʾwbógatiti se. ʾilì káko ʾwblě´šti se. ʾilì káko pítati se. Let us not think only about how to get rich or clothe or feed ourselves
nь^ páče množae da pomišljáimь káko ʾugóditi x҃u. káko da sъvrъ´šim dobrodě´telь. káko da ʾulučim crs҄tvïe nbs҄noe. but let us think more about how to please Christ, how to gain virtue, how to receive the Kingdom of Heaven
zanè ʾi g҃ь táko námь zápověda vъ st҄mь ʾєѵg҄lïi because thus tells us the Lord in the Holy Gospel
 ʾi gl҃etь. and He says:
ne pécete s҄ dš҃eju vášeju štô ʾjastè ʾilì čtô pïéte nìže tělom vášimь vъ čtô ʾoblě´cěte s҄. do not worry in your souls, what you will eat˸ or about your body, what you will wear (Lk 12:22)
ne dš҃a li bólše єs҄ píšti ʾi tělo ʾoděždy; is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? (23)
sy̏reč ne pomýšljaíte vъnutrъ dš҃ax vášix čtô jáste ʾilì pïete, that is: do not worry inside your souls, what you will eat or drink
nižè ʾiměíte pomýšlenïa vъ čtô ʾoblě´čete telěsi vášego. nor think of in what you clothe your body
něs҄ lì dš҃a váša bólšaa wt ʾásTïa. is not the soul more than food?
něs҄ li tělesà váša bolʹša wt ʾwdě´žde; is not your body more than the clothes?
skazúetь ʾjakó eˇže ʾoumyšljáetě radì ʾjastïa ĭže něs҄ ničtóže, káko ne pecě´te s҄ ʾi dš҃e svoeeˇ radì ĭže єs҄ veštʹ čъsTněíša vъsego míra. he says, that what you think about food is in vain, if you donʹt care about your soul, which is something more precious than the whole world
ʾi pakỳ povelě` po dólě g҃ь, and again, he says below:
vъzrite na ptici nbs҄ny, look at the heavenly birds (Lk 12:24)
ʾjako nì séjutъ they do not sow
 ni žnut҄ nor they reap
ni sъbýrajutь vъ žítnici, nor they have no barn
ʾi wtc҃ъ vášь nbs҄nyi pítaetь е, and your heavenly Father feeds them
ne ví li lučšïi єˇstě ʾwněx, are you not better than these?
ktô že li wt vas҄ péšti se móžetь priložíti vъzrástu svoeˇmû lъkatь ʾєdínь, and who among you can add a cubit to your life? (25)
sȉrěč҄ víditě na ptíce ʾidéže lě´tajutь po vъzduxu, that is: you see (to) the birds, which (where) they fly in the sky
káko ni sě´jutь as they do not sow

ktô že li wt vásь ʾumísliti móžet҄ priložiti tělesi svoeˇmu lъ´kat҄ ʾєdínʹ. and who among you, worrying, can add a cubit to your body?
ʾi pakỳ povělě` and again, he speaks:
ʾo ʾwdě´žde čtô pečéte se. why are you anxious about clothes?
vъzriTe na kríny selnye, look at the wild flowers (Lk 12:27-28)
