5: Єгдà слнце колико снѧать, по всꙋдꙋ, As (ʺwhenʺ) the sun shines everywhere,
6: тако и- преподобниа мати Петки, тако просвещаеть. so much does the (memory of) reverend mother Petka shine
7: нейно житие и неини, сти мощѝ, и неино чꙋдо сьс пость и със сльзи. кои езикь можеть изрещи. Whose tongue could tell (of) her life and her holy relics, and her wonder with the fasting and with tears?
8: колика добродеть показа, на епиватско место и на тракитское и трьновь и на мисиа и на далмати. How much virtue she showed in the land of Epibates and in the Thracian (land) and in and in Tъrnovo, and in Moesia, and in Dalmatia!
и не ткмо по тиа места нь и по- всꙋдꙋ. And not only there, but also everywhere else
9: нашь ꙋмь не можеть разꙋмети. и езикь не може-ть сказати, неина чꙋдеса колико трꙋдь колико сль-зи. Our mind cannot reach and our language cannot tell of all her miracles and the difficulties and tears
10: тъкмо колико нашь ꙋмь постигнеть but only as much as our mind could comprehend
11: толико азь написах евтимиа трьновски патриархь so much did I, Euthymius, Patriarch of Tъrnovo, write
12: нъ и ви блгсословени христиане послꙋшайте, сьс вьниманїе. But also you, blessed Christians, listen with attention
13: Стаѧ преподобна мти петка. беше ѿ место епи-вати. The Saint and Reverend Petka was from Epibates
14: ѿць ей и мати беха блгочестиви христїане. Her father and mother were good Christians
15: ходеха по заповеди гсдни they lived (ʺwalkedʺ) according to the Lord's commandments
16: и беха милостви. and they were merciful
17: ходеха по заповеди бжии, they lived (ʺwalkedʺ) according to the God's commandments
18: и родиха таѧ чиста девица. and they gave birth to this pure maiden
19: родиха и дрꙋго мꙋжко ѿроче, име емꙋ евтимиа, they gave birth also to another, male child, his name was Euthymius
20: и стана на мадить град епископь. and he became the bishop of Matidia
21: и наꙋчиха ги на страх бжии и на законь христиански. And they taught them to fear God and His law
22: и неини ро-дители преставиха се And her parents presented themselves (died)
23: и ѡстана стаѧ със брата сво-его ефтимиа. and (Petka) remained with her brother
24: и ѡнь много чꙋдо показа, And he did many miracles too
25: понеже беше и тои много простиль всꙋ странꙋ ѡнꙋ. със пость и чистота. because he was and enlightened his entire country with his fasting and purity
26: того ради и негови мощи исцелениѧ творать... Therefore his relics cause healings
27: и стаа петка егда погребе. родители своѝ, тогда поче посное житие. And St Petka, when she buried her parents, she began her fasting life
пость и- воздрьжание б͛дение поклонение низꙋлегание, (that is) fasting and chastity, vigil, kneeling, laying on the floor (for prayer)
28: ни- ꙗстие имаше, ни постелѧ. she had neither food nor soft bedding
29: и поиде вь пꙋстиню And she went to the desert
30: и та-мо пребиваше агглскаго житиа, ꙗкоже илїа ı иѡана крстителѧ. and there lived an angelic life, like Elias and John the Baptist
31: пость бденїе метание сльзи и воздиханїе Fasting, vigil, prayer, tears and gasps
32: Зиме ѿ стꙋдь трьпераше in the winter was trembling from cold
33: лете ѿ слнце гореше. in the summer she was burning from the sun
34: и. трава беше ей ꙗстие, And grass was her food
и то на заходь слнце. and even that only at the sunset
35: и мо-лба не престано твораше, and she prayed (ʺdid prayerʺ) perpetually
36: и никако не имаше помисль ни за дом ни за родителе ни за сродници ни за красни ѡдежди, ни за ꙗстиа и питиа. and (she) wouldn't have a thought neither about a house, nor about the parents, nor kinsman, nor about beautiful clothes, nor food and something to drink.
37: никако не помишлѧше тако. She did not think about anything like that
38: тькмо сьс сльзи и молба пребиваше, And with tears and prayers she lived
39: и на всакь час второ пришествие хво мислеше. and she thought every time about the Second Coming of Christ
40: како хощеме да посрещнеме ха сьс светли светилници. how she will meet Christ with a prepared lamp?
41: и како би добро сьтворила да ꙋкрасить свою дшꙋ, And so how to decorate her soul
и да почꙋеть глас евангелски ѿ ха to hear that voice of Christ from the Gospel:
42: прїидите милостиви девици, да се насладите кра-сота рáйскаѧ. ʺCome, dear maidens, enjoy the beauty of the paradise!ʺ
43: и тако провождаше животь свои по ѡнаа пꙋстинѧ за многꙋ време, And thus she lived her life on that desert for a long time
44: лꙋкави же диаволь не престано плашеше ѧ. But the Devil always frightened her
45: и претвараше се ꙗко страшень ѕверь. And many times (he) changed himself to a terrible beast
46: и плашеше ю да би ѡставила пꙋстиню, (and he) would frighten her (away) quickly to leave the desert
47: нъ стаа имаше ха помощнїка But St. Petka had Christ as a helper
48: и не престано на него вьзираше and she look at Him perpetually
49: и сльзи испꙋщаше, and she poured tears
50: егдà призиваше ба на помощь, вса сила диаволска ѿгонѧше When she called God's help, the entire devilish power left
51: ꙗкоже рече двдь, because David said
52: возжделееть црь доброти твоеѧ. ʺthe King shall crave for your goodnessʺ
53: тако и стаѧ със пость. пребисть многа лета въ пꙋсти-ни. And like that the Saint (Petka) lived many summers in the desert fasting
54: и въ една нощь егдà твораше молба и молитва, And in one night, when she did prayer and prayer,
рꙋце свои възвишаше горе, (she) raised her hands high and wept
и лице свое със сльзи ѡмиваше, and she washed her face with tears
и напрасно виде бжествено видение. then she saw a divine vision
55: и единъ аггль се ꙗвѝ стеи како единь млади юношь an angel appeared to her as a young boy
56: лице его ꙗко слнце сиꙗеше. His face shone like the sun
57: и рече ей да ѡставить пꙋстиню, и да идеть пакь въ епиватъ, въ свое ѿьчество And he told her to leave the desert and go to Epivat again, her fatherland
58: тамо ти подо-баетъ да ѡставиши мощи, ʺThere you should leave your relicsʺ
59: а дшꙋ вь нбснаѧ красота. ʺbut your soul will be in the heavenly beautyʺ
60: Єгда стаѧ таково видение виде разꙋме како ѿ ба есть това видение. When the Saint saw this vision, she understood that this vision was from God
61: и позна како хощеть скорꙋ да се преста-вить And she knew she was to die soon
62: и радꙋваше се, and she rejoiced
63: нь грижа имаше како да ѡставит пꙋстиню, and (she) was worried about leaving the desert
64: дшевни разговорь. (which provides?) consolation of the soul
65: и тогда стаа ѡстави пꙋстиню, And then the Saint left the desert
66: и ѿиде прежде вь цриградь. and she went first to Tsarigrad
67: и ꙋлезе ꙋ црковь And she entered the church
68: и не престано молѧше се бꙋ, and she prayed to God perpetually
69: и поиде по вси цркви ꙗ̀коже некоѧ пчела трꙋдолюбна. And she went to every church like a hard-working bee
70: и поиде вь црков престеи бдци нарицаемеи влахерна. and (then) she went to (the) church of St Mary which is called Blachernae
71: и тамо припаде на икона пре-стеи бдци, And there she bowed to the icon of the holy Saint Mary
72: и много излиа сльзи and she shed many tears
73: и тако молѧше се, And so she prayed
74: гпже Бце мати моѧ влдчце, що си породила гсда ба иса ха моего. ʺO lady, Mother of God, my mother, my lady, who gave birth to my Lord God Jesus Christʺ
и азь на тебе надею се да ме по(м)илꙋеши ʺand in thee I hope that thou hast mercy upon meʺ
и да се не возгнꙋсиши ѿ мене. ʺdon't turn away in disgust from meʺ
ни ѿ мои грехове ʺnor of my sinsʺ
75: понеже ѿ мою младось твоемꙋ снꙋ последовах ʺbecause I followed thy son and prayed since my youthʺ
76: и молю ти се влдчце ʺand I beg you, o ladyʺ
77: ти знаеши женско есьство. мою слабость ʺyou know my womanly nature and my weaknessʺ
78: и тебе имамь помощница ʺand I have you as a helperʺ
79: разве тебе дрꙋго не имамь. ʺI have not got anything else except you.ʺ
80: и егда бехь вь пꙋстиню тебе. имахь помощницꙋ. ʺAnd when I was in the desert, I had you as a helperʺ
81: и сега есмь вь мире ʺbut now I have returned into (the) worldʺ
82: и паки не ѡстави мене гпже бдце. ʺand again, don't leave me, o Lady, Mother of Godʺ
83: и поиде стаѧ вь свое ѿьчество епивать. And the Saint went to her fatherland Epivat
84: и пребисть тамо време не мало, And there she stayed some time
85: и никои не познаваше ѧ, and nobody knew her
86: и егда виде свое преставление. сътвори молба кь бꙋ and as she saw her death (coming), she prayed to God
87: и рече. and she said:
88: члвеко-любче влдко, да не ѡставиши рабꙋ твою. ʺO, Lord, Lover of humans, do not leave me, Your servantʺ
89: на тебе, гсди азь надею се. да ме не ѡставиши, ʺI put my hopes on You, o Lord, that You will not leave meʺ
90: и настави рабꙋ твою. ʺso help Your servantʺ
91: кь тебе прибегла есмь. ги бже мои. ʺTo you I fled, my Lord God.ʺ
92: повели агглꙋ. мирнꙋ. да прїиметь мою дшꙋ. и да ѧ сочететь със аггли и архаггли, ʺGive a command to a peaceful angel to take my soul and to place it among angels and archangelsʺ
93: ꙗко блгословень еси во веки ве-ковь ʺfor You are praised in eternityʺ
94: аминь.,, ʺamenʺ
95: и вь тоѧ час предаде дшꙋ свою вь- рꙋце бжїи, And in this time she surrendered her soul into the arms of God
96: и некои хрїстиане, погребоха тело, And some christians buried her body
97: и- не знаеха ѿ где беше пришла. and they did not know from where she came
98: и тако проводи дни. свои на сего живота. And so came the day in this one's life
99: и тамо наиде вечни покои,, and there she found eternal peace
100: И да покажеме како и сьмрьти показа чꙋдо. And may us show what miracle she showed (after) death
101: некои постникь имаше тамо There was a man fasting
102: на стльпь пребиваше, he lived on a pillar
103: и постеше се тамо близь гроба стеи петки. and he fasted close to the site of St. Petka's grave
104: и прилꙋчи се тамо And so it came to pass
105: и ꙋмре некои корабчиа. that one sailor died
106: и корабчїи врьлиха го тамо бли-зꙋ при сльпа. And the (other) sailors threw him in the vicinity of the pillar
107: и поче да исходить смрадь ѿ онова тело And stench started to come out of this body
108: и- повеле посникь да ископають дꙋпка голема при сльпа и да го закопаѧть. And the hermit commanded to dig a big hole next to the pillar and to bury it
109: егда почеха копати найдоха тело стей петки. When they started to dig, find the body of Saint Petka
110: испꙋщаше блгоухание. it had a nice scent
111: и некои члвекь именемь геѡргїа, помоли се бꙋ да мꙋ покажеть бь And a certain man, with the name Georgi, prayed to God to show him (?).
112: егда вечерь бисть, леже спати. When it was evening, he lied down to sleep
113: и виде на снь една жена црца красна седе на престоль злати и воине много около неѧ. And he saw a woman in his dream, a beautiful queen, sitting on a golden throne and many warriors around here
114: и ꙋфати геѡргїа And (one of the soldiers) seized Georgi
115: и рече мꙋ and he said to him:
116: почто ѡставихте смрьд-ливо тело при мощї стеи, ʺWhy did you leave the dead body next to the holy relics?ʺ
117: нъ скорꙋ поиди ʺGo quicklyʺ
118: и извади мощи стеи петки. ʺand retrieve the relics of Saint Petka!ʺ
119: и постави ги ꙋ говчегь злати, ʺAnd put them in a golden coffinʺ
120: понеже и црь пожали неини мощи, ʺbecause the king honoured her relicsʺ
121: и гь хощеть да ѧ прославить. ʺand God wants to make her famousʺ
122: и ста ꙗви мꙋ се And the saint appeared to him
123: и рече мꙋ and she said to him:
124: скоро да ме извадиши ѿ тоѧ смрадь. ʺyou should get me out of this stench quicklyʺ
125: не боиши ли се ба да не паднеть огнь ѿ нбса да ви пого-рить ʺdon't you fear God will throw fire from heaven on you?ʺ
126: понеже азь есмь ѿ епиватиа ʺbecause I am from Epibatesʺ
127: и таѧ нощь и- дрꙋга некоѧ жена именемь ефимиа And this night and some other woman, called Efimia,
и ѡна таково видение виде, and she saw such a vision
128: и егда сказаха на епиватски людие, And when they told to the people of Epivat
скорꙋ приидха сьс многꙋ радость. soon they came closer with a lot of happiness
129: и наидоха многоценое ськровище. and they found the very precious treasure
130: и їзвадиха сти мощи. And they took out the holy relics
131: и занесоха ихь сьс теми-анъ и свещи and they took them with thyme and candles
132: и положиха ихь вь црковь стих аптль and they laid them down in the church of the Holy Apostles
133: и- тамо много чꙋдо сътвори. And there many miracles happened
134: тогда много бесни исцели. слепи глꙋхи и всакна болезни кои прихождаха сьс вера. then she healed many possessed, blind, deaf and all (other) ill, who came with faith
135: и прочꙋ се по вса землѧ епиватска, and it was famous around the whole land of Epibates
136: не тъкмо епивати нъ- до Цриград͛. (and) not only in Epibates, but in Tsarigrad, too
137: и тогда беше ѡслабело грьческо цртво. And afterwards the Greek kingdom weakened
138: и сьс бжїемь произволениемь прїидоша римлѧне And with God's will the Romans came
139: и ꙋзеха цриград, and they took Tsarigrad
140: ꙗкоже рече прркь двдь, because the prophet David said
141: със палица жилезна ꙋдръжахь, ʺWith an iron stick I ruledʺ
146: и тогда плениха френци And then Franks pillaged
147: и вса ѡбраха. and they robbed everything
148: и мощи стеи ѿнесоша вь римь.,,, And they took the holy relics to Rome
149: И вь то време блгочестиви црь, болгарски. вь тръново ıѡанъ асенъ, синь старомꙋ црꙋ асеню, крепко дрьжаше тогда црство, And at this time the honorableBulgarian king in Tъrnovo, Ioan Asen, son of the old king Asen, strongly held the kingdom back then.
150: и никако не ꙋбо-ꙗ се ѿ And he did not fear the Franks
френци, егда ꙋзеха цриград, when they took Tsarigrad
151: нъ воздвиже велика воиска болгарска, but he raised a great Bulgarian army
152: и поплени не честиви френци. and he defeated the dishonorable Franks
153: и много землѧ ꙋзе ѿ нихь. със бжїимь повелениемь. and he took many of their lands with God's will
македонска землѧ и серска, и ста гора и солꙋнь. The land of Macedon, the Serbian Land, the Holy Mountain and Solun
154: и вса землѧ ѳеѳа-лииска, и тривалиѧ ꙋзе, и далматиа и And he took the entire Thessalonian Land and Tribalia and Dalmatia
що е арбанашка дръжава, и до драча. and also what is the Albanian country, up to Dyrrhacium
155: и до где ꙋзе, постави митрополїти. и епископи блгочестиви. And till where he freed, he put metropolitans and revered episcopes
156: сти хрисофꙋли що есꙋ сега ꙋ славна лавра ꙋ стиа гори. (as it is written in) holy chrysobuls what are now in the glorious lavra on the Holy mountain
157: не тъкмо тиа земли прие нь и цриград He did not just take these lands, but also Tsarigrad
158: и тамо, що беха френци, поклониха мꙋ се And the Franks there bowed to him
159: и дань даваха мꙋ. and they gave him tax
160: егда почꙋ црь како стаѧ творить толико чꙋдеса и исцелениа. и пожали за ѡниа мощи. when the king heard about the saint, how she performs so many miracles and healings, he wished for her relics
161: и повеле на ѡниа, що бехꙋ ꙋ цриград френци, and he commanded the Franks in Tsarigrad
162: и рече имъ and he told them:
163: не искамь ѿ вась ни злато, ни сребро, тъкмо що имать ꙋ епиватъ мощи стеи петки да ми го послете сьс ковчега ʺI don't want gold or silver from you, only the relics of Saint Petka that there are in Epivat, that you send me them with the coffinʺ
164: то искамь ѿ вас, ʺthat is what I want from youʺ
165: тогда почꙋха френци, що беха ꙋ цриградь, Then the Franks in Tsarigrad heard (obeyed?)
166: послаха писание до цра they sent a letter to (ʺintoʺ) the king
167: и рекоха, and they said:
168: црꙋ честити молимо ти се, да повелить твоѧ дрьжава да прїидꙋть епископи и да пренесꙋть мощи стеи петки вь твое славное црство,, ʺO honored King, we beg you, that your land will command bishops to come and take the relics of St. Petka to your glorious landʺ
169: Єгда почꙋ црь такива речи, проводи преѡсщеннаго марка митрополита великаго със многою чьсть. да поидеть до епивать град да пренесеть тело прпдбнїа петки. вь славнии град трьновь. When the king heard these words, he commanded Marko the superior mitropolit with great honors to go to Epibates and to take the body of the Reverend Petka in the glorious city of Tarnovo
170: и поиде епискꙋпь тамо And the bishop went there
171: и ꙋзе чстнїа мощи сьс великою почесть and he took the honorable relics with a great glory
172: идеше, he went
173: и хвалѧше ба и преподобною. and praised God and the Reverend (Petka)
174: и где минеха със сти мощи, вси изидеха клирици и сщеници сьс многꙋ почесть и сьс красно блгоухание. And where he passed with the holy relics, all clerics came and candlesticks with big honour and beautiful fragrance
175: и егда почꙋ црь ıѡань асень како идꙋтъ сти мощи, And when King John Asen heard that the holy relics came
изиде из град сьс мтрїю своею црца елена. и сьс свою црцꙋ аннꙋ, he went out of the city with his mother, Queen Elena and and his Queen Anna
и патриархь чстни го-сподинъ василиа, със всемь причетомь црковнимь и множеством безчисленимь народомь. and also the honorable lord, Patriarch Basil with all the clergy and endless people
176: црь же и вси сꙋщии сь нимь. сьс многꙋ чсть посрещнаха мощи стеи, King and all went with them, with great honour honoured the relics of the Saint
177: и любезно лѡбизахꙋ ихь and they kissed them with love
178: и чстно положиха въ цркви црстеи, and they placed them honorably in the royal church
179: и аще кои махꙋ различни боле-сти. прихождахꙋ сь верꙋю And numerous that had various illnesses came with faith
