4:	Внемлите ви читáтели и слишáтели ро́дѣ бо́лгарстыи	hear, o readers and audience (of the) Bulgarian nation
5:	кои́ ревнꙋ́еть и оусерд͛свꙋ-еть под͛ своего рода и по свое ѿе́чество бо́лгарское,	(you), who care and desire for the sake (ʺunderʺ ?) your nation and your Bulgarian fatherland
6:	и желàеть разꙋме́ти и знáти извѣ̀стно ради́ свое́го болгарскаго ро́да	and (you, who want to) understand and know what is famous about their Bulgarian nation
	и за свое́ оци и прáоци, и црове и патриарси и стихь˸	and about their fathers, and forefathers, and kings, and patriarchs, and saints
7:	како са испѐрва поживе-ли и проишле́	how they lived in the beginning and passed
8:	и вàмь потре́бно и полѣ́зно есть да знáите изве́стно деѧ́ние ѡць вáшихь	and it is needed and helpful for you to know the famous deeds of your fathers
	като щꙋ знáѧть вси́ дрꙋ́ги род-ове, и имѣ̀ють ıстори́и,	as all other nations have chronicles
9:	и всѧ́кыи кни́ж-никь ѿ нихь знáеть и сказꙋ́еть и хва-лит сѧ сас сво́и родь и ꙗзи́кь.	and every writer among them knows and tells and praises their own nation and people
10:	того рàди и áзь вáмь написахь по ре́дꙋ и изве́стно за вáшь ро́дь и ꙗзи́кь	for that reason also I wrote for you orderly famous (deeds) of your nation and people
11:	четáите	read (it)
12:	и да зна-ите	and may you know
	зàмь да не бáдите ѿ дрꙋ́ги те родове́ и ꙗзѝци подсме́ѧни и засрàмлени и оукоре́ни.	so that you will not be mocked and ashamed and rebuked by other nations and peoples
13:	азь бо из лиха поревновáхь по рода и по ѿечество бо́лгарское,	because poor myself had a desire for my Bulgarian fatherland
14:	и много трꙋд имѧ́хь собирáти ѿ разли́чнихь кни́ги и ıсторїи,	and I had a lot of work collecting from various books and chronicles
15:	дондеже собрáхь и совокꙋ-пихь деѧ̀нїе рода бо́лгарскаго вь кни́жицꙋ сıю́	until I collected and amassed the deeds of the Bulgarian nation into this book
	ради вáшеѧ по́лза и похва-лà,	for your profit and praise
16:	зане áще кто̀ хо́щеть, и люби́ть свои родь и ꙗзи́кь и ѿчство болга-рское,	because if one wants and loves his nation and people and the Bulgarian fatherland
	и лю́бить знàти за свои ро́дь и ꙗзи́кь,	and loves to know about his nation and people
	да препи́шить ıсторию́ сıю́	(then) he should transcribe this Chronicle
	да се не погꙋ́би.	so that it will not get lost
17:	защо́ нѐцыи члве́ци не любать за свои родь бо́лгарскыи знáти,	because some people don't love to know about their Bulgarian nation
18:	но- сѧ ѡбрáщать на чꙋ́ждаѧ политикá, и на- чꙋ̀ждыи ꙗзи́кь,	but they turn themselves to foreign polities and to foreign peoples
19:	и не радѧ́ть за сво́и род. и ѧзи́кь бо́лгарски	and they don't work for the sake of their Bulgarian nation and language
20:	и оꙋ́чать сѧ читáти и гово-ри́ти по гречески	and they learn to read and speak Greek
21:	и срáмѧт сѧ да се́ нарекꙋ́ть бо́лгари:	and they are ashamed to call themselves Bulgarians
22:	ѡ не разꙋ́мне и ю́роде члвче	o you unreasonable and foolish man!
	защо́ са с-рáмѧшь да нариче́шь себѣ̀ бо́лгаринь.	why are you ashamed to call yourself Bulgarian?
23:	и не чете-шь сво̀ѧ та кни́га	and (why) do you not read your own literature?
	що ѐ пꙋ тво́ѧ ꙗзи́кь	which is in your language
24:	и не гово́ришь по сво́и ꙗзѝкь	and you don't speak your language?
25:	илѝ не сà и-мáли и бо́лгари црство и гсдáрство за- толи́ко вре́мѧ,	or did not Bulgarians have a kingdom and state for so (much) time?
26:	и црствꙋвáли	and they ruled as kings
27:	и бѝли слá-вни и чꙋ́дни по си́чкаѧ землѧ́	and were famous and wondrous all over the world
28:	и мно̀го пь́ти нави́вали	and they vindicated many times (the wise Greeks and strong Romans)
29:	и взѐмали дáнь ѿ гре́-ци мꙋ́дри, и ѿ ри́млѧни си́лни	and they took tribute from the wise Greeks and strong Romans
30:	и дáва-ли имь црове и крáлюве свои́ црски дь-щери за женѝ,	and emperors and kings gave them their princesses for wives
	то́кмо да би́ха, имѧ́ли мѝрь и любо́вь, сь ни́мь	only to have peace and good relations with them
31:	и нáи слáвни би́ли ѿ всего славѐнскаго наро̀да	and they were the most famous among the whole Slavic nation
32:	и ѿ- нихь пе́рвога нарѐкли црове	and they were the first among them to have emperors
33:	и перво тие кралюве и патриáрхи имáли,	and they were the first to have kings and patriarchs
34:	и перво- са тие кращавали ѿ дрꙋги те ꙗзици по напре́ть	and they were the first to be baptized among other (Slavic?) peoples
35:	и наи мно́го землѧ ти́е оусвоили	and they held to most land
36:	и тако ѿ всегѡ̏ слове́нскаго ро̀да ѡни́ нáи си́лни и честни́ би́ли	and they were the most powerful and honorable among the whole Slavic nation
37:	и пе́рво слове́нски све-тыи ѿ бо́лгарски ро́дь и ꙗзи́кь просїѧ́ли	and the first Slavic saints shone out from the Bulgarian nation and people
38:	како пꙋ ре́дꙋ всѣхь защо́ истории́цꙋ напи́сахь,	I wrote (this) Chronicle duly about all (these things)
39:	зато́ имамь ѿ мно́го кни́ги и ѿ много ıсторї́и свиде́телствꙋ	I have for them testimonies from various books and chronicles
	какь е и-стинна товá сѐ за бо́лгари що помѧнꙋ́хь.	how it is true, that what I mentioned
40:	но защо́ са срáмѧть ты́ не разꙋ́мнѣ члве́че ѿ сво́и ро́дь,	but (then) why do you feel ashamed, you foolish man, for your nation?
	и влáчишь са по чꙋ́ждыи ꙗ-зи́кь:	creeping yourself to foreign peoples?
41:	но ще да риче́шь,	you will say:
42:	защо́ са гре́ци по мꙋ́дри, и по поли́тични,	ʺbecause Greeks are more wise and skilled in politicsʺ
43:	а бо́лгари са п-рости и глꙋ́пави	ʺwhile Bulgarians are simple and dumbʺ
44:	и не имать речи поли-ти́чни,	ʺand they don't have a political life (republic?)ʺ
45:	затовá по дꙋбрѧ́ е да сá приме-сѧмь по гре́чески.	ʺthat's why it is better to mix up with Greeksʺ
46:	но азь тебѣ да ска-жꙋ̀:	but I would tell you:
47:	виждь не разꙋ́мне ко́лко има ѿ гре-ци по мꙋ́дри и славни,	look, fool, how many wise and famous men are there among Greeks
48:	дали ѡставѧ нѧ-кꙋи ѿ тѧ́хь сво́и ро́дь и ꙗзи́кь	did any of them abandon his nation and people?
	или свое́ оуче́ние,	or his learning?
	като тебѣ̀ безꙋ́мнѣ що оустáвѧшь сво́и ꙗзѝкь и оучение	as you do, foolishly abandoning your people and your learning
	и при-месѧшь сѧ вь греческаѧ мꙋдрость и- политикá	and you try to participate in Greek wisdom and politics
	щото не машь ꙋ не́ѧ ни́кои преби-токь нито разꙋмѧ́вашь.	while not having any profit from it, nor understanding it
49:	ты члвече болга-рине не прелщáи сѧ	you, Bulgarian man, do not fool yourself
50:	зане знàи сво̀и ро́дь и ꙗз-икь	but rather (ʺfor that reasonʺ) know your nation and people
51:	и оучи́ сѧ по свое́мꙋ ꙗзи́кꙋ,	and learn about your people/in your language
52:	по добрѧ́ е. болгарскаѧ простотá и незло́бие. ѿ гре́ческаѧ политика и мдрость.	Bulgarian simplicity and meekness are better than Greek politics and wisdom
53:	бо́лгари про́сти и не ве-жи,	Bulgarians are simple and uneducated
54:	но всѧкаго члвѣка прїѐмлють вь до- свои	but they accept anyone in their house
55:	и оугощають	and they are good to guests
56:	и млсти́ню дáрꙋють, кои́ ѿ тѧхь про́сѧть,	and they give alms (to) those who beg
57:	а мꙋдрїи и́ полити́чни товá ни творѧ́ть,	and the wise and political not only do that not
58:	но и ѡщи ѿне́мать ѿ про́сти те	but they even take from the simple ones
59:	и грàбѧть не прáведно,	and they steal unjustly
60:	и по́ вече грѣ̀хь прие-(мать) ѿ тѧхна мꙋдрость и политикá.	and they have more sin because of their wisdom and politics
	а не́ по́лза,	and not profit
61:	и́ли са срáмѧшь чи са гре́ци по мꙋдри терго-фци	or do you feel shame, because Greeks are more clever traders?
	и славни на земли ѿ сво́и ро́дь и ꙗзи-кь,	and more famous from their nation and peoples?
62:	а болгáри са про́сти	while Bulgarians are simple
63:	и не ма ѿ тѧ́хь тарго́фци, и хи́три кни́жници	and they don't have traders and clever writers
	и славни, на земли́ на товá вре́мѧ,	and famous in the world in this time
64:	но по́ вече са ѿ тѧ́хь прости ѡрачи и ѡвчáри и копáчи	but rather, more of them are simple plowers and shepherds and diggers
	и про́сти земли́делатели и занаѧтли́и.	and simple peasants and craftsmen
65:	азь на то́, во крáтцѣ да те́ скажꙋ́:	I would say to that shortly:
66:	ѿ адáма дáже до двда и прáведнаго ıѡаки́ма,	from Adam to David, and even to just Joachim
	и ıѡ́сифа бдци ѡбрꙋ́чникь,	and Joseph, the husband of Mary
	ı ѡще ко́лко биха пра-ведни и́ сти́ пророци и патрїáрси,	and how many others were just and (became) holy prophets and patriarchs
67:	и нарекꙋха- са велѝкѝ на землѧ́ та, и пред бга,	and they were called great both in the world and in front of God
68:	ала не биха ѿ тѧ́хь никои терго́виць	but there was no trader among them
	или́ прехи́трь и гордели́вь,	nor a clever one, nor a proud one
	катѡ сигáшни те хитреци́ що ги́ ты́ имáшь за по́чсть	like the today's clever ones, whom you do praise
69:	и чꙋ́дишь са сась тѧ́хь,	and who fascinate you
70:	и влáчишь са пꙋ техниѧ ть ꙗзи́кь и на тѣ̀хни ѡбичáи	and behind whose people and customs you do creep
71:	но ѡни стыи и прáвдни праоѡци си́чки били земледелáтели и ѡвчари,	but these saint and just forefathers were all peasants and shepherds
72:	и бы́ли богáти сас ско́ти и пло́ди зе́мльныи	and they were rich by cattle and fruits of the earth
73:	и би́ли про́сти и не- злобѝви,	and they were simple and meek
74:	и́ самь ıсь хрстсь бгь сле́зи оу дом про́стаго и ни́щаго ıѡсифа:	and even Jesus Christ, God Himself, descended to the house of the simple, lowly Joseph
75:	и тамо поживе́	and thence he lived
76:	виждь кáко милва бгь по́ вече прости те и- не ѕлоби́ви те ѡраче и ѡвчáрѣ	see, how much (ʺmoreʺ) God loves the simple and meek ploughers and shepherds!
77:	и наи пе́рво тѧхь возлюбѝль на землѧ̀ тѧ	and He loved them as the first ones on the Earth
78:	и прослàвиль ги:	and He made them glorious
79:	а ти са срáмѧшь защо́ са бо́лгари прости́ и не хи́три ѡвчаре и ѡрáче	and you feel shame because Bulgarians are simple shepherds and ploughers?
80:	и ѡстàвѧшь сво́и ро́дь и ꙗзи́кь	and you abandon your nation and people
81:	и хвáлишь са сась чꙋ-жди ꙗзи́кь,	and you praise yourself with a foreign people
82:	и влáчишь са на тѧхно ѡб-ичáи,	and you creep to their customs
83:	то́ азь ви́дѣхь мно́го члвѣ̀ци ѿ- бо́лгари	this is what I saw about many people among Bulgarians
84:	защо́ тáко стрꙋ́вать	why do they do so?
85:	идать по- чꙋ̀ждыи ꙗзи́кь и ѡбичáи,	they follow foreign peoples and customs
86:	а сво̀и ꙗзи́кь хꙋ́лѧть,	and they mock their own people?!
87:	затовá ꙗ напи́сахь тꙋ́ка, на ѡни оцерꙋгáтели	that's why I wrote this to those father-blasphemers
	де́тꙋ не лю́бѧть сво́и ро́дь и- ꙗзи́кь,	who do not love their nation and people
88:	а вїе които ревнꙋ́ите за сво́и ро́дь и ѡчество	but (for) you (I wrote this), who have a desire for the sake of your nation and fatherland
	и ищете да знáите и да чꙋите	you, who want to know and listen
89:	зато-вá испи́сахь вáмь	for you I have written (this book)
	да знáите како ни са, би́ли и наши бо́лгарскыи црове и патриар-си и архиерѐи, безь лѣтопи́сни кни́ги и конди́ки	so that you know, why our Bulgarian kings and patriarchs and archpriests had no chronicles and codices
	що сá за толи́ко лѣ̀та црствꙋвáли и гсдства-ли на земли,	while ruling for so many years in the world
90:	и имали ıсторї́и црски, и конди́ки архиере́иски всѣ̀хь извѣ̀стно,	and yet they had royal chronicles and episcopal codices, as it is well known
	и житиѧ́ и пра-ви́лахь сти́хь бо́лгарскихь мно́го,	and many lives (of saints) and orthodox regulations in Bulgaria
91:	но не би-ло вь ѡ́но времѧ щáмби по слове́нски ꙗзи́кь,	but there was no print in that time among the Slavic peoples/in Slavonic
92:	а члвѣ̀ци ѿ небреже́ние не (преписовáли),	and, because of crises, people did not transcribe
93:	но на- мáло са мѣстá, наме́рѧли таквѝсь кни́ги,	but on some places there were such books to be found
94:	а кога оузе́ли тꙋрци, бо́лгарскаѧ землѧ́ на-прáсно,	but as the Turks suddenly took the Bulgarian land
	и погáзили и попалиле цркви, и- и монасти́ри,	then they stomped and burned churches and monasteries
	и црски и архıере́иски дворо́ви.	and royal and episcopal palaces
95:	вь то́ вре́мѧ члци́ те, ѿ стрáха и ѿ нꙋжда, и ѿ оужáса тꙋ́рскаго бѣ̀гали, да ꙋпáзѧть, сво̀и живо̀ть,	in that time, people from fear and need and terror of the Turks fled to save their lives
96:	и вь то́ вре́мѧ лютое погꙋби́-ли ѡныи црские ıсторı́и, и кондики́ архиере-искиѧ и патриáршескиѧ	and in those harsh times they lost those royal chronicles and episcopal and patriarchal codices
	и на мно́го сты́и, житие́ и прáвила,	and lives of many saints and regulations
97:	и сегá не ма ѿ ѡни́ѧ к-кни́ги, лѣтопи́сни,	and now these historical books, are lost
	що сá были прострáнно напи́сани, заради́ всегѡ наро́да, и цреи бо́-лгарскихь:	(although) once widely spread, written for the whole Bulgarian nation and (its) kings
98:	áзь много кни́ги и премногѡ прочето́хь и взискáхь, прилѣ̀жнѡ за мно́го вре́мѧ	I read and collected many, many books during a long time
99:	и не возмого́хь, ни́како да наме́рѧ та-квась кни́га	and I could not find such a book
	или печатна, или́ рꙋкꙋпи́сна,	neither printed, nor handwritten
100:	намерѧ са ала по мáло и рѧ́дко во кратцѣ,	but (one could) find a little and short (information)
101:	наме́рихь иднá, крáткаѧ ıсторї̀ица що ѧ, би́ль препи́саль, нѧкои лати́нинь	I found one short chronicle, written by some Latin (Catholic)
	на и́мѧ мавробирь,	whose name was Mavrobir (Mauro Orbini)
	ѿ гре́ческаѧ ıстори́ѧ, за болга-бо́лгарские црове,	from a Greek chronicle (as a source) about Bulgarian kings
102:	но весмá крáтка,	but (as it is) very short
103:	едвам наме́рихь, тѐхни именá,	I could hardly even find their names
	и ко̀и по кꙋ́егѡ црꙋ́валь,	and who ruled after whom
104:	самь то́и напѝсаль, ако грѐ-ци ѿ зáвисть и ѿ ненавѝсть що имеѧ́ли на бо̀лгари,	he himself wrote, that because of jealousy and hate the Greeks had towards Bulgarians
	та не пи́сали хрáбриѧ постꙋ́пки и слáвнаѧ деѧ́ниѧ, цреи и наро́да бол͛га-рскаго,	they did not write about the brave and famous deeds of Bulgarian kings and nation
105:	но во крáтцѣ и вопре́ки пѝсали,	but they still did shortly write in spite of this
	кáко е тáмь би́ло оуго́дно,	how it was great
	зáмь да ни- имь е срамотá,	to compensate their shame
106:	защо́ ги бо́лгари, мно́го пь́ти побѣждàли,	because Bulgarians defeated them for many times
107:	и дáнь ѿ тѧ́хь зе́ма-ли.	and they took taxes from them
108:	и азь ѿ того̀ мавроби́ра, и ѿ дрꙋ-гїи мно́го кни́ги и ıсторї́и собрáхь за- мно́го вре́мѧ	and I collected (information) about many periods from this Mavrobir and many other books and chronicles
	по при́лика,	in a similar manner
109:	и распро́стра-страни́хь и совокꙋпи́хь сїю ıсторı́ицꙋ,	and I expanded and collected this chronicle
110:	макáрь акꙋ са нахо́дѧ оу дрꙋ́ги мно́го кни-ги и ıсторıи	even if (the information) can be found in many other books and chronicles
	по мáло и во крáтцѣ написа-но за бо́лгари,	more concisely (?) and shortly written about Bulgarians
111:	ала ни мо́жи, сѣки члкь да има ѡниѧ кни́ги, и да чите и да по́мни	but not every man is able to have all those books and to read and remember
112:	того̀ рáди разсꙋди́хь	that's why I decided
113:	и совокꙋпихь всѧ заедно́ во книжицꙋ сїю́ изволѧи да чтеть.	and I collected everything into this little booklet, willing (?) to have it read (?)
