| 2: | хощꙋ вмъ сказати на въше господъство. ради блаженою таїсїю. начело ҆и конацъ. | I shall tell to your lordships about the blessed Thaïs, (her) beginnings and (her) end: |
| 3: | како наче зло, | how she began (to do) evil |
| 4: | ҆и како савръши добро. | and how she did good in the end |
| 5: | кои почꙋетъ неино житие въсаки хощетъ се полъзꙋвъти. | everyone, who hears her Life, shall benefit |
| 6: | таꙗ ста таисїа ҆имеꙗше злооумна мати, ҆и прокꙋдлива. | this St Thaïs had a malevolent, vile mother |
| 7: | егда виде, не҆ина мати, како беше красна девица таїсїа. рече въ себе. | as her mother saw, how Thaïs was (becoming a) beautiful maiden, she said to herself: |
| 8: | азъ могꙋ многꙋ, многꙋ богатаство сабрати сасъ мою девицꙋ таисїа. | ʺI can amass a lot, a LOT of wealth with this maiden of mine, Thaïsʺ |
| 9: | тако ҆и сатвори до последи. | and thus she did afterwards |
| 10: | завѣде ю оу блꙋдилище. | she brought her to a brothel |
| 11: | ҆и наиде млади прокꙋдливи. | and she found vile youths |
| 12: | ҆и поче да имъ сказꙋет͛, како ҆иматъ, красна щеръка. | and she began to tell them about her (ʺhaving aʺ) beautiful daughter |
| 13: | тако похвалаше ю, не҆ина безакона мати. | thus her lawless mother praised her |
| 14: | ҆и наꙋчиха се, многꙋ прокꙋдливи да прихождатъ. ради неино красно лице. | and many vile (men) learned to come for her beautiful face |
| 15: | и многꙋ сребро и злато даваха и. | and they gave her a lot of silver and gold |
| 16: | и многꙋцени премени приношаха и, ради не҆ино, красно красно лице. | and they were bringing here very precious clothes because of her beautiful face |
| 17: | ҆и нищо не жалеха. | and they would not regret (giving her) anything |
| ни сребро ни злато, ни драги камениꙗ. ни бисери. | neither silver, nor gold, nor precious stones, nor pearls | |
| тъкмо да биха се савъкꙋпиле с ноино тело. | only to be with her body together | |
| 18: | толико беше опоилъ врагъ грехолюбиви рачителе. | so much did the Enemy intoxicate the sinful lechers |
| 19: | и сасъ свое тело, многꙋ богатаство беше сабрала. | and she amassed a lot of wealth by her body |
| 20: | ҆и беше се прочꙋло неино красно лице. | and her beautiful face became famous |
| 21: | ҆и преподобни ẅцъ павъхнꙋтїа, въ пꙋстинꙋ почꙋлъ бе. ради неино красно лице. | even the Reverend Father Paphnutius in the desert did hear about her beautiful face |
| 22: | помисли да ҆идетъ да ꙗ видитъ. | (and) he thought about going to visit her |
| 23: | ҆и ҆облече се въ бели, мир͛ски премени. | and he clad himself in white, secular clothes |
| да го не познаетъ. како естъ калꙋгеръ. | so that no one finds out he was a monk | |
| 24: | егда прииде павънꙋтїа, на҆иде ꙗ | as Paphnutius came, he found her |
| 25: | седеше на врата дома того. | she was sitting at the door of that house |
| 26: | ẅнъ ҆и даде жлътица. | he gave her a gold coin |
| 27: | ẅна го фана за рꙋка, | she took him by the hand |
| 28: | ҆и рече мꙋ | and she told him: |
| 29: | ҆иди по мне. | ʺfollow meʺ |
| 30: | егда ꙋлезе павънꙋтїа оу кащи. виде ҆одаръ широко ҆и високъ. ҆и ꙋкрашенъ. ҆и послано. | as Paphnutius came into the house, he saw a wide and high bed, nicely prepared |
| 31: | ẅна възиде на ẅдаръ. | she climbed to the bed |
| 32: | ҆имꙋт͛ ẅбичае блꙋдници, да есꙋ оу красни премени. ҆и да ҆имꙋтъ при себе многꙋ миризъми. да прелащаютъ рачителе. | the prostitutes have a custom to have pretty clothes and many perfumes with them, so that they can seduce the lechers |
| 33: | тако и ẅна беше оукрашена. | and thus also she was made pretty |
| 34: | и многꙋ миризъми имаше при себе. | and she had many perfumes with her |
| 35: | егда възиде ẅна на ҆одаръ. рече павънꙋтїю | as she climbed to the bed, she said to Paphnutius: |
| 36: | възиди ҆и ти на ҆одаръ при мене. | ʺcome to me to the bed tooʺ |
| 37: | ẅнъ же рече, | but he said: |
| 38: | не имат͛ ли дрꙋго по скришно место. | ʺis there not a more intimate place?ʺ |
| 39: | рече таїсїа | Thaïs said: |
| 40: | почто ти е. дрꙋго место. | ʺwhy do you need another place?ʺ |
| 41: | рече павънꙋтїа. | Paphnutius said: |
| 42: | да не видитъ нас неко. | ʺso that nobody sees usʺ |
| 43: | рече емꙋ таїсїа, | Thaïs said to him: |
| 44: | това место ради такова работа правено. | ʺthis place is made for such thingsʺ |
| 45: | или се ѿ людие срамꙋеши, | ʺor do you shame yourself from people?ʺ |
| 46: | егда се срамꙋеши почто си пришалъ. | ʺif you shame yourself, why did you come?ʺ |
| 47: | не требꙋетъ да се срамꙋеме ѿ людие, | ʺwe don't have to shame ourselves from the peopleʺ |
| 48: | аще ли се ѿ бога боиши. то нигде не можеши да се сакрие. | ʺ(but) if you fear God, then you cannot hide anywhereʺ |
| 49: | аще ҆и подъ земли не можеши се сакрити да те не видит͛ бгъ | ʺnot even under earth you can hide, so that the God does not see youʺ |
| 50: | ѣ почꙋ павънꙋтїа такива речи ѿ неꙗ. рече и | as Paphnutius heard such words from her, he said: |
| 51: | ти знаеши бга. | ʺdo you know God?ʺ |
| 52: | ẅна же рече | and she said: |
| 53: | знамъ и раи ҆и (мꙋ)ка бгъ сатворилъ естъ. | ʺI know (that) God created both the Paradise and the Tortureʺ |
| 54: | рече и старацъ. | the old man said to her: |
| 55: | егда знаеши бга. почто не боиши се ѿ ного. | ʺif you know God, why don't you fear Him?ʺ |
| 56: | нъ ẅскврънаеши толико члвци, ҆и сама себе. | ʺbut rather, you taint the people and yourself?ʺ |
| 57: | егда такови речи оуслиша. ѿ старъца. паде на нозе негови. | as she heard such words from the old man, she fell down to his legs |
| 58: | ҆и рече | and she said: |
| 59: | сега познахъ. како иматъ. грешникꙋ, спасение, | ʺnow I know how (even?) a sinner has salvationʺ |
| 60: | тъкмо почекаи ме три часа. | ʺjust wait for me for three hours, then do with me what you know to doʺ |
| 61: | потомъ сатвори с мене како сам͛ знаеши. | ʺthen do with me what you know by yourselfʺ |
| 62: | ẅна же ꙋзе ẅнова имение. ҆иже беше го сабрала са свое тело. | and she took the wealth, which she amassed with her body |
| 63: | ҆и разъдаде го, на сироти и на сиромаси. | and she gave it to orphans and the poor |
| 64: | ҆и беше ẅнова богатаство до четири десет͛ литаръ злато. | and the wealth amounted to up to forty pounds of gold |
| 65: | ҆и поведе ю старацъ. | and the old man took her |
| 66: | ẅна по него идеꙗше | she went behind him |
| 67: | ҆и плакаше свое сагрешенїа. | and she wept (for) her sins |
| 68: | заведе ю старацъ въ женъски манастиръ. | the old man brought her to a monastery for women |
| 69: | ҆и поиска старацъ ѿ игꙋмени са, една мала келиꙗ. | and the old man asked the abbess for a small cell |
| 70: | тамо затвори блаженою таїсїю | there he closed the blessed Thaïs |
| 71: | ҆и сасъ ҆олово запечатли врата. | and he seal the door with lead |
| 72: | тъко единъ мали прозорацъ ẅстави. | he left just a single small window |
| 73: | ѿ тамо даваха и хлебъ ҆и вода. ҆и то на ·ѳ· часъ на денъ. | trough this they gave her bread and water at the 9th hour of the day |
| 74: | рече емꙋ таїсїа | Thaïs said to him: |
| 75: | где бꙋдꙋ телесни смрадъ пꙋскати. | ʺwhere should I leave my bodily excrement?ʺ |
| 76: | рече и старацъ. | the old man said to her: |
| 77: | оу келию пꙋскаи. | ʺleave it in the cellʺ |
| 78: | како си мерисалала, разълични, меризъми, ҆и благооуханїа. сега мериши, свои смрадъ, | ʺas you have smelled so many perfumes, now you can smell your own stenchʺ |
| 79: | скажи ми ẅче како да се мола бгꙋ, да би простилъ гъ бгъ моꙗ сагрешенїа, | (Thaïs asked:) ʺtell me, Father, how should I pray to God, so that He forgives my sins?ʺ |
| 80: | рече и старацъ. | the old man said to her: |
| 81: | не си достоина, да речеши ҆име бжие. | ʺyou are not worthy to speak out the name of Godʺ |
| 82: | твои ꙋста не чисти есꙋ. | ʺyour mouth is impureʺ |
| 83: | и твои рꙋце ẅсврънила еси сасъ твои зли работи. | ʺand you have tainted your hands by your evil deedsʺ |
| 84: | тъкмо стои на въстокъ, | ʺjust stand up towards the eastʺ |
| 85: | ҆и говори | ʺand speak:ʺ |
| 86: | гди саздави ме ҆и помилꙋи ме. | ʺO Lord, renew me and be merciful to meʺ |
| 87: | ҆и сатвори тамо таїсїа три лета. въ ҆онаꙗ келїа, затворена. | and Thaïs was closed in the cell there for three years |
| 88: | всъхоте старацъ да ꙗ помилꙋетъ. | (then) the old man wanted to be merciful to her |
| 89: | ѿиде при стомꙋ анъдонїю. | he went to St Anthony (the Great?) |
| 90: | ҆и сказа емꙋ въса како сатворилъ. | and he told him about everything he had done |
| 91: | тъкмо не знамъ рече дал ю простилъ бгъ. | he said: ʺI just don't know, whether God has forgiven herʺ |
| 92: | рече мꙋ сти анътонїа. | St Anthony said to him: |
| 93: | таꙗ нощъ въси да се помолимъ бгꙋ | ʺlet us all pray to God this nightʺ |
| 94: | ҆и хощетъ ни показати бгъ ради то, | ʺand God shall show us (a sign) about itʺ |
| 95: | ҆и рече на свои ꙋченици, въсаки да се затворит͛ въ своꙗ келїа. | and he told his followers to close themselves in their cells |
| 96: | ҆и въсꙋ нощъ. да се помолиме бгꙋ. да би ҆объꙗвилъ бгъ ради затворъница. | and (he said:) ʺlet us pray to God, so that He shows us (a sign) about the prisonerʺ |
| 97: | ҆и тако сатвориша. | and thus they did |
| 98: | ҆и показа бгъ паѷлꙋ оученикꙋ анъдони҆овꙋ. | and God showed (a sign) to Paul, a follower of Anthony |
| 99: | виде небеса ѿвръзена. | he saw opened heavens |
| 100: | ҆и виде ẅдаръ | and he saw a bed |
| 101: | ҆и беше оукрашенъ. | and it was made pretty |
| 102: | ҆и три девици, стрежахꙋ ẅдра того | and three maidens guarded that bed |
| 103: | [† ҆и красни вѣнацъ беше на одра.] | and a beautiful wreath was on the bed |
| 104: | и рекохъ | ʺand I said:ʺ |
| 105: | комꙋ ꙋготовънъ естъ тоꙗ ẅдаръ ҆и вѣнацъ. дали ẅцꙋ моемꙋ анъдонїю. | ʺfor whom were this bed and wreath prepared, for my Father Anthony?ʺ |
| 106: | ҆и при҆иде ми ѿ нбеса гласъ | and a voice came out of the heavens |
| 107: | и рече ми. | and it told me: |
| 108: | не е тоꙗ ҆одаръ, ҆и венацъ, анътонїẅвъ. | ʺthe bed and the wreath are not for Anthonyʺ |
| 109: | нъ на таїсїа блꙋдница. естъ ẅдаръ ҆и венацъ. | ʺbut for Thaïs the Harlot are both the bed and the wreathʺ |
| 110: | егда самна, сказа паѷелъ елика виде, ҆и слиша, | at the dawn, Paul explained, what he saw and heard |
| 111: | егда почꙋ павънꙋтїа такова словѣса ѿ паѷла. ѿиде оу манастиръ, | as Paphnutius heard such words from Paul, he went to the monastery |
| 112: | ҆и въсхоте да ѿворитъ врата, да ҆изидет͛ таїсїа, | and he wanted to open the door, so that Thaïs goes out |
| 113: | ẅна же молаше го, да ю ẅставит͛, да не изъходитъ. нъ до самръти тамо да седитъ. д̶о̶ с̶а̶м̶р̶ъ̶т̶ъ̶ | but she prayed him to leave her, so that she does not have to go, but rather that she would stay until her death |
| 114: | понеже многꙋ есамъ грешна. | (saying:) ʺbecause I am very sinfulʺ |
| 115: | рече и старацъ. | the old man said to her: |
| 116: | не бои се чедо | ʺfear not, o childʺ |
| 117: | простилъ тї естъ бгъ сагрешенїа твоꙗ. | ʺGod has forgiven you your sinsʺ |
| 118: | и извѣде ю вънъ | and he took her outside |
| 119: | и рече ка немꙋ блажена, | and the blessed one said to him: |
| 120: | ҆имаи ми вѣрꙋ ẅче сти. | ʺbelieve me, o holy fatherʺ |
| 121: | ѿ когда вънидох въ таꙗ келїю. познахъ мои грехове, како некое тешъко бреме. | ʺsince I came into that cell, I understood (that) my sins (are) like a heavy burdenʺ |
| 122: | ҆и ѿ таковою теготꙋ пъшъках ҆и въдихахъ. | ʺand I moaned and breathed heavily from such a weightʺ |
| 123: | ҆и колико азъ тако творах прихождаше ми, некое благооухание. и до сего часа. | ʺand as I did so much (my repentance?), some kind of relief came to me up to this momentʺ |
| 124: | и рече старацъ | and the old man said: |
| 125: | виде бгъ твое покаꙗние, ҆и трꙋди. | ʺGod has seen your repentance and worksʺ |
| 126: | ҆и прости твое сагрешенїа. | ʺand He has forgiven your sinsʺ |
| 127: | потомъ поминꙋше ї едни и ҆оболе, три дни, | then one-two-three days passed |
| 128: | ҆и почи са миромъ, | and she laid her down in peace |
| 129: | и сподоби се, са въсеми, преподобними, и правѣдними иже ꙋгодивъши бгꙋ. | and she was sanctified with all the reverend and just ones, who have pleased God |
| 130: | вѣлико, и похвалъно покаꙗние. показа преподобна таїсїа. | Reverend Thaïs showed a great and praiseworthy repentance |
| 131: | погибла беше, | she was lost |
| 132: | ҆и на҆иде се, | and (then) she was found |
| 133: | мрътва беше | she was dead |
| 134: | ҆и ҆оживе. | and she became alive |
| 135: | бгꙋ нашемꙋ слава въ вѣки | praise be to our God forever! |
| 136: | аминъ. | amen |
