2: xoštu vmъ skazati na vъše gospodъstvo. radi blaženoju taïsïju. načelo ʾi konacъ. I shall tell to your lordships about the blessed Thaïs, (her) beginnings and (her) end:
3: kako nače zlo, how she began (to do) evil
4: ʾi kako savrъši dobro. and how she did good in the end
5: koi počuetъ neino žitie vъsaki xoštetъ se polъzuvъti. everyone, who hears her Life, shall benefit
6: taja sta taisïa ʾimejaše zlooumna mati, ʾi prokudliva. this St Thaïs had a malevolent, vile mother
7: egda vide, neʾina mati, kako beše krasna devica taïsïa. reče vъ sebe. as her mother saw, how Thaïs was (becoming a) beautiful maiden, she said to herself:
8: azъ mogu mnogu, mnogu bogatastvo sabrati sasъ moju devicu taisïa. ʺI can amass a lot, a LOT of wealth with this maiden of mine, Thaïsʺ
9: tako ʾi satvori do posledi. and thus she did afterwards
10: zavěde ju ou bludilište. she brought her to a brothel
11: ʾi naide mladi prokudlivi. and she found vile youths
12: ʾi poče da imъ skazuet', kako ʾimatъ, krasna šterъka. and she began to tell them about her (ʺhaving aʺ) beautiful daughter
13: tako poxvalaše ju, neʾina bezakona mati. thus her lawless mother praised her
14: ʾi naučixa se, mnogu prokudlivi da prixoždatъ. radi neino krasno lice. and many vile (men) learned to come for her beautiful face
15: i mnogu srebro i zlato davaxa i. and they gave her a lot of silver and gold
16: i mnoguceni premeni prinošaxa i, radi neʾino, krasno krasno lice. and they were bringing here very precious clothes because of her beautiful face
17: ʾi ništo ne žalexa. and they would not regret (giving her) anything
ni srebro ni zlato, ni dragi kamenija. ni biseri. neither silver, nor gold, nor precious stones, nor pearls
tъkmo da bixa se savъkupile s noino telo. only to be with her body together
18: toliko beše opoilъ vragъ grexoljubivi račitele. so much did the Enemy intoxicate the sinful lechers
19: i sasъ svoe telo, mnogu bogatastvo beše sabrala. and she amassed a lot of wealth by her body
20: ʾi beše se pročulo neino krasno lice. and her beautiful face became famous
21: ʾi prepodobni ẅcъ pavъxnutïa, vъ pustinu počulъ be. radi neino krasno lice. even the Reverend Father Paphnutius in the desert did hear about her beautiful face
22: pomisli da ʾidetъ da ja viditъ. (and) he thought about going to visit her
23: ʾi ʾobleče se vъ beli, mir'ski premeni. and he clad himself in white, secular clothes
da go ne poznaetъ. kako estъ kalugerъ. so that no one finds out he was a monk
24: egda priide pavъnutïa, naʾide ja as Paphnutius came, he found her
25: sedeše na vrata doma togo. she was sitting at the door of that house
26: ẅnъ ʾi dade žlъtica. he gave her a gold coin

32: ʾimut' ẅbičae bludnici, da esu ou krasni premeni. ʾi da ʾimutъ pri sebe mnogu mirizъmi. da prelaštajutъ račitele. the prostitutes have a custom to have pretty clothes and many perfumes with them, so that they can seduce the lechers
33: tako i ẅna beše oukrašena. and thus also she was made pretty
34: i mnogu mirizъmi imaše pri sebe. and she had many perfumes with her
35: egda vъzide ẅna na ʾodarъ. reče pavъnutïju as she climbed to the bed, she said to Paphnutius:
36: vъzidi ʾi ti na ʾodarъ pri mene. ʺcome to me to the bed tooʺ
37: ẅnъ že reče, but he said:
38: ne imat' li drugo po skrišno mesto. ʺis there not a more intimate place?ʺ
39: reče taïsïa Thaïs said:
40: počto ti e. drugo mesto. ʺwhy do you need another place?ʺ
41: reče pavъnutïa. Paphnutius said:
42: da ne viditъ nas neko. ʺso that nobody sees usʺ
43: reče emu taïsïa, Thaïs said to him:
44: tova mesto radi takova rabota praveno. ʺthis place is made for such thingsʺ
45: ili se wt ljudie sramueši, ʺor do you shame yourself from people?ʺ
46: egda se sramueši počto si prišalъ. ʺif you shame yourself, why did you come?ʺ
47: ne trebuetъ da se sramueme wt ljudie, ʺwe don't have to shame ourselves from the peopleʺ
48: ašte li se wt boga boiši. to nigde ne možeši da se sakrie. ʺ(but) if you fear God, then you cannot hide anywhereʺ
49: ašte ʾi podъ zemli ne možeši se sakriti da te ne vidit' bgъ ʺnot even under earth you can hide, so that the God does not see youʺ
50: ě poču pavъnutïa takiva reči wt neja. reče i as Paphnutius heard such words from her, he said:
51: ti znaeši bga. ʺdo you know God?ʺ
52: ẅna že reče and she said:
53: znamъ i rai ʾi (mu)ka bgъ satvorilъ estъ. ʺI know (that) God created both the Paradise and the Tortureʺ
54: reče i staracъ. the old man said to her:
55: egda znaeši bga. počto ne boiši se wt nogo. ʺif you know God, why don't you fear Him?ʺ
56: nъ ẅskvrъnaeši toliko člvci, ʾi sama sebe. ʺbut rather, you taint the people and yourself?ʺ
57: egda takovi reči ousliša. wt starъca. pade na noze negovi. as she heard such words from the old man, she fell down to his legs
58: ʾi reče and she said:
59: sega poznaxъ. kako imatъ. grešniku, spasenie, ʺnow I know how (even?) a sinner has salvationʺ
60: tъkmo počekai me tri časa. ʺjust wait for me for three hours, then do with me what you know to doʺ
61: potomъ satvori s mene kako sam' znaeši. ʺthen do with me what you know by yourselfʺ
62: ẅna že uze ẅnova imenie. ʾiže beše go sabrala sa svoe telo. and she took the wealth, which she amassed with her body
63: ʾi razъdade go, na siroti i na siromasi. and she gave it to orphans and the poor
64: ʾi beše ẅnova bogatastvo do četiri deset' litarъ zlato. and the wealth amounted to up to forty pounds of gold
65: ʾi povede ju staracъ. and the old man took her
66: ẅna po nego idejaše she went behind him
67: ʾi plakaše svoe sagrešenïa. and she wept (for) her sins
68: zavede ju staracъ vъ ženъski manastirъ. the old man brought her to a monastery for women
69: ʾi poiska staracъ wt igumeni sa, edna mala kelija. and the old man asked the abbess for a small cell
70: tamo zatvori blaženoju taïsïju there he closed the blessed Thaïs
71: ʾi sasъ ʾolovo zapečatli vrata. and he seal the door with lead
72: tъko edinъ mali prozoracъ ẅstavi. he left just a single small window
73: wt tamo davaxa i xlebъ ʾi voda. ʾi to na *ѳ* časъ na denъ. trough this they gave her bread and water at the 9th hour of the day
74: reče emu taïsïa Thaïs said to him:
75: gde budu telesni smradъ puskati. ʺwhere should I leave my bodily excrement?ʺ
76: reče i staracъ. the old man said to her:
77: ou keliju puskai. ʺleave it in the cellʺ
78: kako si merisalala, razъlični, merizъmi, ʾi blagoouxanïa. sega meriši, svoi smradъ, ʺas you have smelled so many perfumes, now you can smell your own stenchʺ
79: skaži mi ẅče kako da se mola bgu, da bi prostilъ gъ bgъ moja sagrešenïa, (Thaïs asked:) ʺtell me, Father, how should I pray to God, so that He forgives my sins?ʺ
80: reče i staracъ. the old man said to her:
81: ne si dostoina, da rečeši ʾime bžie. ʺyou are not worthy to speak out the name of Godʺ
82: tvoi usta ne čisti esu. ʺyour mouth is impureʺ
83: i tvoi ruce ẅsvrъnila esi sasъ tvoi zli raboti. ʺand you have tainted your hands by your evil deedsʺ
84: tъkmo stoi na vъstokъ, ʺjust stand up towards the eastʺ
85: ʾi govori ʺand speak:ʺ
86: gdi sazdavi me ʾi pomilui me. ʺO Lord, renew me and be merciful to meʺ
87: ʾi satvori tamo taïsïa tri leta. vъ ʾonaja kelïa, zatvorena. and Thaïs was closed in the cell there for three years
88: vsъxote staracъ da ja pomiluetъ. (then) the old man wanted to be merciful to her
89: wtide pri stomu anъdonïju. he went to St Anthony (the Great?)
90: ʾi skaza emu vъsa kako satvorilъ. and he told him about everything he had done
91: tъkmo ne znamъ reče dal ju prostilъ bgъ. he said: ʺI just don't know, whether God has forgiven herʺ
92: reče mu sti anъtonïa. St Anthony said to him:
93: taja noštъ vъsi da se pomolimъ bgu ʺlet us all pray to God this nightʺ
94: ʾi xoštetъ ni pokazati bgъ radi to, ʺand God shall show us (a sign) about itʺ
95: ʾi reče na svoi učenici, vъsaki da se zatvorit' vъ svoja kelïa. and he told his followers to close themselves in their cells
96: ʾi vъsu noštъ. da se pomolime bgu. da bi ʾobъjavilъ bgъ radi zatvorъnica. and (he said:) ʺlet us pray to God, so that He shows us (a sign) about the prisonerʺ
97: ʾi tako satvoriša. and thus they did
98: ʾi pokaza bgъ paϋlu oučeniku anъdoniʾovu. and God showed (a sign) to Paul, a follower of Anthony
99: vide nebesa wtvrъzena. he saw opened heavens
100: ʾi vide ẅdarъ and he saw a bed
101: ʾi beše oukrašenъ. and it was made pretty
102: ʾi tri devici, strežaxu ẅdra togo and three maidens guarded that bed
103: [† ʾi krasni věnacъ beše na odra.] and a beautiful wreath was on the bed
104: i rekoxъ ʺand I said:ʺ
105: komu ugotovъnъ estъ toja ẅdarъ ʾi věnacъ. dali ẅcu moemu anъdonïju. ʺfor whom were this bed and wreath prepared, for my Father Anthony?ʺ
106: ʾi priʾide mi wt nbesa glasъ and a voice came out of the heavens
107: i reče mi. and it told me:
108: ne e toja ʾodarъ, ʾi venacъ, anъtonïẅvъ. ʺthe bed and the wreath are not for Anthonyʺ
109: nъ na taïsïa bludnica. estъ ẅdarъ ʾi venacъ. ʺbut for Thaïs the Harlot are both the bed and the wreathʺ
110: egda samna, skaza paϋelъ elika vide, ʾi sliša, at the dawn, Paul explained, what he saw and heard
111: egda poču pavъnutïa takova slověsa wt paϋla. wtide ou manastirъ, as Paphnutius heard such words from Paul, he went to the monastery
112: ʾi vъsxote da wtvoritъ vrata, da ʾizidet' taïsïa, and he wanted to open the door, so that Thaïs goes out
113: ẅna že molaše go, da ju ẅstavit', da ne izъxoditъ. nъ do samrъti tamo da seditъ. d̶o̶ s̶a̶m̶r̶ъ̶t̶ъ̶ but she prayed him to leave her, so that she does not have to go, but rather that she would stay until her death
114: poneže mnogu esamъ grešna. (saying:) ʺbecause I am very sinfulʺ
115: reče i staracъ. the old man said to her:
116: ne boi se čedo ʺfear not, o childʺ
117: prostilъ tï estъ bgъ sagrešenïa tvoja. ʺGod has forgiven you your sinsʺ
118: i izvěde ju vъnъ and he took her outside
119: i reče ka nemu blažena, and the blessed one said to him:
120: ʾimai mi věru ẅče sti. ʺbelieve me, o holy fatherʺ
121: wt kogda vъnidox vъ taja kelïju. poznaxъ moi grexove, kako nekoe tešъko breme. ʺsince I came into that cell, I understood (that) my sins (are) like a heavy burdenʺ
122: ʾi wt takovoju tegotu pъšъkax ʾi vъdixaxъ. ʺand I moaned and breathed heavily from such a weightʺ
123: ʾi koliko azъ tako tvorax prixoždaše mi, nekoe blagoouxanie. i do sego časa. ʺand as I did so much (my repentance?), some kind of relief came to me up to this momentʺ
124: i reče staracъ and the old man said:
125: vide bgъ tvoe pokajanie, ʾi trudi. ʺGod has seen your repentance and worksʺ
126: ʾi prosti tvoe sagrešenïa. ʺand He has forgiven your sinsʺ
127: potomъ pominuše ï edni i ʾobole, tri dni, then one-two-three days passed
128: ʾi poči sa miromъ, and she laid her down in peace
129: i spodobi se, sa vъsemi, prepodobnimi, i pravědnimi iže ugodivъši bgu. and she was sanctified with all the reverend and just ones, who have pleased God
130: věliko, i poxvalъno pokajanie. pokaza prepodobna taïsïa. Reverend Thaïs showed a great and praiseworthy repentance
131: pogibla beše, she was lost
132: ʾi naʾide se, and (then) she was found
133: mrъtva beše she was dead
134: ʾi ʾožive. and she became alive
135: bgu našemu slava vъ věki praise be to our God forever!
