4: | zašto moskale vъ onova vreme ne bexu krteni | Because at that time the Muscovites were not baptized. |
5: | i reče crъ na svoi nastoinici štoto mu bexu nai verni | And the king said to his retainers, who were his most loyal ones: |
6: | da idete po svi gradove kude ima crie ili kralove | ʺGo to all the cities, where there are emperors or kings!ʺ |
7: | da gledate koja vera kakvo drъži čistotu i kakvo jadene ede i koja vera kakvo se moli bgu | ʺObserve, how which faith upholds its purity, what it eats, and how which faith prays to God!ʺ |
8: | tova po svi te veri da vidite | ʺSee it for each faith!ʺ |
9: | i da napišete na knigu | ʺAnd write it in a book!ʺ |
10: | i da mi donesete pismo to | And bring me the writing!ʺ |
11: | i azъ da vidimъ koja e vera nai čista i nai xubava | ʺAnd may I see, which is the purest and most beautiful faith!ʺ |
12: | i ja da budemъ na taja vera | ʺMay I will be of that faith too!ʺ |
13: | takoi saka moe srdce | ʺThus my heart wills.ʺ |
14: | takoi reče crъ | Thus the king said. |
15: | i otidoxu onię nastoinici | And those retainers went out. |
16: | i xodixu po svi gradove i po svi crki dvorove | And they went around all the cities and all the royal palaces. |
17: | i koju veru kakvo vidoxu takoi na knigu zapisaxu | And what they saw (about) which faith, thus they wrote to the book. |
18: | i otidoxu u tursku zemlju prez more u anadolъ | And they went to the Turkish land through the sea, to Anatolia. |
19: | i tamo vidoxu kakvo drъžutъ turъci veru | And there they saw, how Turks uphold their faith. |
20: | često se mijutъ | They wash often. |
21: | i često se klanjat | And they bow down often. |
22: | i edutъ meso goveždo i ovče | And they eat beef and lamb. |
23: | i ne drъžutъ nikogi ni sredu ni petokъ | And they hold no (fasting on?) Wednesday and Friday. |
24: | i vidoxu i turъsku čistotu kakvo drъžutъ turъci | And they saw the Turkish purity, which the Turks uphold. |
25: | i tova zapisaxu na knigu | And they wrote that to the book. |

27: | i vidoxu koja vera kakvo drъži | And they saw, what which faith holds. |
28: | i sve zapisaxu | And they wrote all down. |
29: | nai posle otidoxu u crigrad pri cra kostanъdina | Finally, they came to Tsarigrad, to Emperor Constantine, |
i tamo da vidutъ crъ kostanъdinъ kakva vera deržitъ | to see, what faith does Emperor Constantine hold, | |
i kakva čistota imatъ i kakvo jadene edutъ | and what purity they have, and what do they eat. | |
30: | i vide gi crъ kostanъdinъ | And Emperor Constantine saw them. |
31: | i pita svoi slugi | And he asked his servants. |
32: | i reče | And he said: |
33: | tija člveci ot kudu esu | ʺThose people, where are they from?ʺ |
34: | i oni rekoxu | And they said: |
35: | cru čestiti tia člveci sutъ nastoinici moskovъskomu cru petrovi | ʺO honorable Emperor, those people are retainers of Peter, King of Muscovy.ʺ |
36: | i prizva gi crъ | And the emperor invited them. |
37: | i pita gi | And he asked them. |
38: | i reče | And he said: |
39: | vie pošto radi doidoxъte do tuva | ʺWhy did you come here?ʺ |
40: | kažete mi pravo | ʺTell me the truth!ʺ |
41: | i oni rekoxu | And they said: |
42: | ti da si živъ cru | ʺMay you live (well), o Emperor!ʺ |
43: | nię doidoxъme do tvoju ruku i da vidimo kakva vera vie veruvate | ʺWe came to your hands, to see, what faith you follow,ʺ |
i kakva čistota vie drъžite i kakvo jadene vie edete | ʺand to see, what purity do you uphold, and what food do you eat,ʺ | |
i nie da vidimo i nie da verъvamo | ʺso that we would see and believe too,ʺ | |
i nie takovo da edemo | ʺand so that we would eat thus,ʺ | |
i da budemo i nie cru rabi tvoi | ʺand so we, too, will become your servants, o Emperor!ʺ | |
44: | i kato ču crъ takviva mirъni dumi ot tię člveci a onъ reče na svoi nastoinici | And when the emperor heard such peaceful words from those men, he said to his servants: |
45: | skoro donesete na tię putnici po edinъ katъ ruba | ʺBring soon for each of those (?) travellers a dress!ʺ |
46: | i donesoxa ruba | And they brought the dress. |
47: | i premenixu gi xubavo i čtno kakvoto e cru prilično | And they clothed them nicely and honorably, as it is appropriate for an emperor. |
48: | i gostixu gi dostolepno | And they fed them wonderfully. |
49: | i napoixu gi | And they gave them drinks. |
50: | i jadoxu ot svekakvi jastia različnia crъski | And they ate from various royal dishes. |
51: | i dobre obiknaxu | And they like it well (?) |
52: | kogi bi u jutro stanu crъ kostanъdinъ rano | When the morning came, Emperor Constantine woke up early. |
53: | i prizva svoi patiarъsi i svoi vldci i popove i klirici i pevci | And he summoned his patriarchs, and his bishops, and priests, and clerics, and singers. |
54: | i otidoxu vъ velikoju crkvu crskoju | And they went to the great royal church. |
55: | i počexu da drъžutъ stuju liturgiju | And they began to hold the holy liturgy. |
56: | kogi reče popъ blagosloveno crtvo | When the priest said: ʺBlessed (be) the kingdom!ʺ |
crъ pade sasъ lice svoe na zemli | the emperor fell with his face to the ground. | |
57: | i pokloni se | And he bowed. |
58: | i reče | And he said: |
59: | gdi spi ljudie tvoi | ʺO Lord, save your people!ʺ |
60: | i blglovi dostojanie tvoe | ʺAnd bless your inheritance!ʺ |
61: | i stanu crъ ot zemli | And the emperor stood up from the ground. |
62: | i sede na zlatenъ prestolъ svoi | And he sat on his golden throne. |
63: | i po malo vreme doide redъ da celujutъ čtnie i stie ikoni | And after a short time the time came to kiss honorable and holy icons. |
64: | priide crъ i patriarъxъ | The emperor and the patriarch came. |
65: | i celovaxu čtnie i stie ikoni | And they kissed honorable and holy icons. |
66: | po cra i patriarxa priidoša vldci | After the king and patriarch, the bishops came. |
67: | i svi boljare crevi celovaxu stie ikoni | And all the boyars of the emperor kissed the holy icons. |
68: | takoi i svi xrtiani priidoxu | Thus, also all the Christians came. |
69: | i celovaxu stie ikoni | And they kissed the holy icons. |
70: | a onija pevъci crevi kogi zapexu glasъ tri stimъ pesnъ človeku umъ zanosexu | And those singers, when they sang the song (in?) Tone Three (?) for the saints, they were carrying away (?) the minds of men. |
71: | takoi umileno peexu glasъ kato nekoi aggeli bžii | They sung the Tone nicely as some angels of God. |
72: | a onię nastoinici crъ petrovi stoexu u crkvu na tronove | And those retainers of King Peter sat (lit. stood) on the thrones in the church. |
73: | i kato vidoxu u crkvu toliko xubostъ i vidoxu toliko pesnъ i toliko slava što e imalo u xristianъsku veru počudixu se | And when they saw so much beauty and saw so much singing and glory, which is in Christian faith, they were amazed. |
74: | i udivixu se | And they were astonished. |
75: | i sve što vidoxu tamo zapisaxu na knigu | And all, what they saw, they wrote down into the book. |
76: | i otidoxu si u moskoviju | And they went forth to Muscovy. |
77: | i zanesoxu cru pismo to | And they brought the writing to the king. |
78: | i dadoxa mu go | And they gave it to him. |
79: | i crъ petrъ prizva svoi četъci i knižnici | And King Peter summoned his readers and librarians. |
80: | i pročetoxu onova pisanie što bexu napisali onia nastoinici kade što bexu videli po crki te veri | And they read that writing, which was written by those retainers, what (and) where they saw in royal faiths. |
81: | sve iskazaxu cru petru po redu za svi te crie i za svi te veri | And they told to King Peter everything duly about all the kings and all the faiths, |
koi kakvo drъži čistotu i koi kakvo jadene ede | who and how upholds purity, and who what kind of food eats. | |
82: | nai posle pročetoxu i crъ kostanъdinovo dejanie | Finally, they read also about the deeds of Emperor Constantine, |
kakvo crъ kostanъdinъ drъži veru xubavu | that Emperor Constantine has a beautiful faith, | |
i drъži čistu svoju dšu | and (that) he holds his soul pure, | |
i samъ sasъ svoe lice na zemli pada vo vreme | and he himself falls with his face on the ground, in the time, | |
kogi reče popъ blgosloveno crtvo | when the priest says: ʺBlessed (be) the kingdom!ʺ | |
83: | takoi pravo ispravixu nastoinici crъ petrovi cru petru buru | Thus well the retainers of King Peter explained (it) to King Peter-Buro. |
84: | i samъ crъ petrъ takoi reče | And King Peter himself spoke thus: |
85: | čuite | ʺListen!ʺ |
86: | i razumeite | ʺAnd understand!ʺ |
87: | zašto ne ma ni edna vera po čista i po xubava ot xrtianъsku veru na toja stъ | ʺFor there is no faith more pure and more beautiful than the Christian faith in this world!ʺ |
88: | takoi i svi crevi ugodnici rekoxu | Thus also all the king's favorites spoke: |
89: | vo istinu ne imat ni edna vera po čista i po xubava ot xrtianъsku veru na toja stъ | ʺTruly, there is no faith more pure and more beautiful than the Christian faith in this world!ʺ |
90: | togiva reče crъ petrъ moskovъski | Then Peter, King of Muscovy, said: |
91: | skoro idete u carigradъ da doide crъ kostanъdinъ | ʺGo soon to Tsarigrad, so that Emperor Constantine comes,ʺ |
da me pokrti da budemъ i ja nemu bratъ | ʺso that he would baptize me, so that I, too, will be his brother!ʺ | |
92: | i otidoxu slugi crъ petrovi | And the servants of King Peter went. |
93: | i rekoxu | And they said: |
94: | cru kostanъdine da idešъ vъ našъ gradъ mosъkoviju | ʺO Emperor Constantine, may you go to our city of Muscovy,ʺ |
da pokrtišъ cra našego petra da bude tebe bratъ | ʺso that you baptize our king Peter, so that he will be your brother!ʺ | |
95: | a carъ kostanъdinъ reče | But Emperor Constantine said: |
96: | ja ne možemъ da idemъ da pokrtimъ cra vašego u zemlju vašu | ʺI cannot go to your land to baptize your king!ʺ |
97: | no ako mu trebue da doide u moi gradъ da go pokrъstimъ dxomъ stimъ | ʺBut if he needs, let him come to my city, so that I baptize him by Holy Spirit.ʺ |
98: | i ne otide | And he did not go. |
99: | i vidoxu slugi crъ petrovi | And the servants of King Peter saw (it clear): |
100: | ne šteja crъ kostanъdinъ da ide u grada moskovъskago da pokrъsti buru cra moskovъskago | Emperor Constantine did not want to go to the city of Muscovy to baptize Buro, King of Muscovy. |
101: | otidoxu | They went. |
102: | i kazaxu cru petru | And they told King Peter. |
103: | i onъ požali | And he was sad. |
104: | i reče | And he said: |
105: | skoro da idete i vtori putъ | ʺGo soon for the second time!ʺ |
106: | i rečete cru kostanъdinu da doide da me pokrъsti | ʺAnd tell Emperor Constantine to come to baptize me!ʺ |
107: | če ako ne doide i vtori putъ da me pokrti da se ne nada na dobro | ʺFor if he does not come the second time to baptize me, he should not expect any good.ʺ |
108: | posle ja xoštemъ dignuti svi moi boljare i svi moi knezove i svu moju voisku na nego | ʺThen I will raise all my boyars, and all my princes, and all my troops against him.ʺ |
109: | i porazi štem mu svu deržavu | ʺAnd I shall crush all of his country!ʺ |
110: | i otidoxu crъ petrovi slugi | And the servants of King Peter went: |
111: | i rekoxu | And they said: |
112: | cru kostanъdine poidi u moskoviju u našъ gradъ | ʺO Emperor Constantine, go to our city of Muscovy,ʺ |
da pokrtišъ cra našego buru | ʺto baptize our King Buro!ʺ | |
113: | i paki ne otide crъ kostanъdinъ da pokrti cra buru | And again, Emperor Constantine did not go to baptize King Buro. |
114: | i otidoxu | And they went away. |
115: | i kazaxu cru če ne šte da doide crъ kostanъdinъ da pokrti cra buru moskovъskago | And they said to the king, that Emperor Constantine will not come to baptize King Buro of Muscovy. |
116: | togiva se zle rasrъdi crъ buro moskovski | Then King Buro of Muscovy became very angry. |
117: | i reče | And he said: |
118: | skoro voiska da se zbere | ʺMay the army is assembled soon.ʺ |
119: | da porazimъ svu drъžavu kostanъdinovu | ʺLet me crush all the Constantine's realm!ʺ |
120: | i da mu uzmemъ sela i gradove | ʺAnd let me take his villages and cities!ʺ |
121: | i da mu pogubimъ svi boljare i knezove | ʺAnd let me kill his boyars and princes!ʺ |
122: | i da mu ne ostavimъ ni edinъ načalъnikъ u negovo crtvo | ʺAnd let me leave not a single commander in his kingdom!ʺ |
123: | i svo voinъstvo negovo da potopimъ | ʺAnd let me drown all of his forces!ʺ |
124: | nai posle i nego da posečemъ | ʺFinally, let me kill him too!ʺ |
125: | i ženu negovu da uzmemъ ja da bude moja | ʺAnd let me take his wife, so that she will be mine!ʺ |
126: | tako otgovori crъ buro moskovъski | Thus answered King Buro of Muscovy. |
127: | i zbra se voiska bezъčislena | And a countless army assembled. |
128: | ni broi imaše koliko milione bexu se zbrali da idutъ na cra konъstanъdina | There was no count of millions, who assembled to go against Emperor Constantine. |
129: | i doide xabarъ cru kostanъdinu če ide voiska silna na nego | And the news came to Emperor Constantine, that a strong army is going against him. |
130: | i onъ samъ vide če ne ma xairъ ot nego | And he himself saw, that he does not have fortune against (lit. from?) him. |
131: | i reče | And he said: |
132: | skoro menъzilъ da ide da nosi knigu poslanicu ot cra kostanъdina | ʺMay a messenger goes quickly, to bring a written message from Emperor Constantine:ʺ |
133: | da se vrъne voiska nazatъ | ʺMay the army returns back.ʺ |
134: | i da me ne posrami crъ buro | ʺAnd may King Buro does not put me to shame.ʺ |
135: | i ja xoštemъ dati sestru moju nemu za ženu | ʺAnd I will give him my sister for a wife.ʺ |
136: | i tako oprosti go crъ buro | And thus King Buro forgave him. |
137: | i uze mu milu sestru za ženu sebe | And he took his beloved sister for a wife for himself. |
138: | a koliko topove beše prigotvilъ | But how many guns he had prepared! |
139: | ni broi imaše | There was no count (of it)! |
140: | i sve povrъnu nazatъ ot kakvo se predade emu crъ kostanъdinъ | And he returned all back, as Emperor Constantine gave himself over. |
141: | i kogi se primirixu crie po nekolko vreme dignu se ot mesto crъ kostanъdinъ | And when the kings made peace, after some time Emperor Constantine rose up from (his) city. |
142: | i poide da ide u moskoviju da pokrti cra buru | And he went (lit. to go) to Muscovy to baptize King Buro. |
143: | i povede po sebe patriarъsi i vldci i popove i klirici i pevъci | And he took with him patriarchs, and bishops, and priests, and clerics, and singers. |
144: | i otide cru buru u dvorove | And he went to the palaces of King Buro. |
145: | i konъdisaxu tamo | And they made a camp there. |
146: | i vide gi crъ buro | And King Buro saw them. |
147: | i zaradva im se jako | And he rejoiced a lot about them. |
148: | i privede gi na domъ svoi | And he brought them to his house. |
149: | i počete gi | And he paid them respect. |
150: | gosti gi | He gave them a feast. |
151: | i napoi gi dostolepno kakъvoto e cru prilično | And he gave them drinks, as it is appropriate for a king. |
152: | i popita gi | And he asked them. |
153: | i reče | And he said: |
154: | možem li i ja da priidemъ na vašu veru i da budemъ bratъ vašъ | ʺIs it possible for me too, to receive (lit. come to) your faith, and to become your brother?ʺ |
155: | i crъ kostandinъ produma | And Emperor Constantine spoke. |
156: | i reče | And he said: |
157: | budi volja tvoja cru | ʺYour will be done, o king!ʺ |
158: | da te pokrtimъ | ʺLet me baptize you!ʺ |
159: | no ne imeešъ cru stuju crkvu | ʺBut you have no holy church, o king.ʺ |
160: | i ne imeešъ čъstnie ikoni | ʺAnd you have no honorable icons.ʺ |
161: | i ne e prilično namъ cromъ da se krtime bezъ crkvu i bezъ čъstnie stie ikoni | ʺAnd it is not appropriate for us, kings, to get baptized without a church and without honorable, holy icons.ʺ |
162: | togiva pita crъ buro cra kostanъdina | Then King Buro of Muscovy asked Emperor Constantine: |
163: | što e tova crъkva | ʺWhat is that (thing, which you call) a church?ʺ |
164: | i za kakvo se nariča crkva | ʺAnd why is it called a church?ʺ |
165: | i za koju e potrebu tova što go vie zovete crkva | ʺAnd for which purpose is that, what you call a church?ʺ |
166: | a crъ kostanъdinъ reče | And Emperor Constantine said: |
167: | o cru brate moi tova što se zove crkva ona prosvetva člveci | ʺO king, my brother, that, what is called a church, it enlightens people.ʺ |
168: | crkva provodi človeci u rai bžii | ʺA church brings people to the Paradise of God.ʺ |
169: | crkva vъvodi člveci u crtvo nbnoe | ʺA church brings people to the Kingdom of Heaven.ʺ |
170: | crkva se zove domъ bžii | ʺA church is called a house of God.ʺ |
171: | tako reče crъ kostanъdinъ cru moskovskomu | Thus spoke Emperor Constantine to the king of Muscovy. |
172: | i toja časъ reče crъ buro | And in that moment King Buro said: |
173: | skoro crkvu da mi napravite | ʺMay you make me a church soon!ʺ |
174: | i doidoxu maistori | And builders came. |
175: | i zagradixu crъkvu źelo velika | And they built a very large church. |
176: | i podpisaxa ju sasъ stie obrazi | And they painted (?) it with holy pictures. |
177: | i sovrъšixa ju xubavo lepo i čъstno | And they finished it nicely, well, and honorably. |
178: | i vlezoxu u crkvu oba cra | And the both kings entered the church, |
i patriarъsi i vladici i popove i klirici i pevci | and (with them) the patriarchs, and bishops, and priests, and clerics, and singers. | |
179: | i počexu da četut stoe pravilo da osvetutъ crkvu | And they began to read the liturgy, so that they consecrate the church. |
180: | i ostixa ju | And they consecrated it. |
181: | i doide redъ i časъ da drъžutъ svetuju liturъgiju | And the turn and time came to hold the holy liturgy. |
182: | i reče patriarxъ blgosloveno crtvo | And the patriarch said: ʺBlessed (be) the kingdom!ʺ |
183: | i poklonixu se oba cra sasъ lice do zemi | And the both kings bowed with faces to the ground. |
184: | tako i svi člveci poklonixu se do zemli | And thus all the people bowed to the ground. |
185: | i kogi zapexu pevъci glasъ umileni člveku i umъ zanosexu | And when the singers sang the loving tone, even the man's mind was carried way. |
186: | tako lepo cru peexu glasъ | So beautifully they sang the tone to the king. |
187: | i crъ buro ot mltъ viknu sasъ golemъ glasъ koliko može | And King Buro exclaimed from mercy with a strong voice, as much as he could. |
188: | i reče | And he said: |
189: | ox mltivi bže moi koja e xubostъ imalo u pravoslavnuju veru xrtianъsku | ʺO my merciful God, what beauty is there in the Orthodox Christian faith!ʺ |
190: | i sъvrъšixu stuju liturgiju | And they finished the holy liturgy. |
191: | i pokrъstixu cra buru sas vodu dxomъ svetimъ | And they baptized King Buro with water (and) with Holy Spirit. |
192: | i pričestixa go | And they gave him Eucharist. |
193: | i dadoxa mu nafora | And they gave him the host. |
194: | i kato mu beše ime crъ buro | And, as his name was King Buro, |

197: | i puknaxu emu i dve te oči | And both of his eyes broke up. |
198: | i uplaši se | And he became afraid. |
199: | i reče | And he said: |
200: | o mltivi bže dobre si ja crtvuvaxъ po moju veru | ʺO merciful God, I ruled well in my faith!ʺ |
201: | da ne bexъ se pokrtilъ ne štexъ oslepeti sasъ dve te moi oči | ʺIf I would have not got baptized, I would not have become blind with both of my eyes.ʺ |
202: | toko tova izreče | He just said that, |
203: | i toja časъ ispadnu emu izъ oči te mreža | and in that moment a network fell from his eyes, |
kato cipa lukova | like a shell from an onion. | |
204: | i progleda | And he started to see (again). |
205: | togiva emu prosię stъ | Then the light shone him through. |
206: | togiva vide slnъce i mesecъ | Then he saw the sun and the moon. |
207: | togiva vide jasni i svetlivi zvezdi | Then he saw the clear and shiny stars. |
208: | togiva mu se otvrъzaxu oči | Then his eyes were unbound. |
209: | i vide planini i gori i xolъmi i vsja predeli zemli | Then he saw the mountains and hills and barrows, and all the borders of the Earth. |
210: | i reče | And he said: |
211: | se priidoxъ na veru | ʺBehold, I came to faith.ʺ |
212: | i krtix se sa vodu | ʺAnd I was baptized by water.ʺ |
213: | i vidoxъ stъ istini | ʺAnd I saw the real world.ʺ |
214: | tako da pokrtimъ i vesъ rodъ člvečeski | ʺThus, let me baptize the whole mankind!ʺ |
215: | i povele crъ petrъ cru kostandinu i patriarъxu | And he commanded Emperor Constantine and the patriarch. |
216: | i prosvetixu vodu | And they consecrated water. |
217: | i sъbra se sъvъ narodъ što beše u crъ petrovu drъžavu | And all the people, who were in the kingdom of King Peter, assembled. |
218: | i uze patriarxъ čašu srebrenu | And the patriarch took a silver cup. |
219: | i sipuvaše onuju stuju vodu svekomu člveku na glavu | And he was pouring that holy water on everyone's head. |
220: | i tako pokrtixu se mosъkale | And thus the Muscovites were baptized. |
221: | i tako vosprijaša vserodnoe krštenie vъ leto *cni* | And thus they received the all-national baptism in the year 958. |
222: | i tako pogodiša se crie | And thus the kings made peace. |
223: | i tako smiriša se | And thus they reconciled. |
224: | i tako sebe postaviša bratu bratъstvo | And thus they made a brotherhood (to be to each other as) brother. |
225: | i cru crtvo | And (thus they gave to each other as) king (the title to?) a kingdom. |
