| [Title] Legend of King Alexander |
That King Alexander, when he raised an army to fight Greeks, he fought for a long time. |
And when he went out of his home, |
҆и ѡтидѐ на во́йскꙋ | and went to war,
҆и не врь́нꙋ се вь домь свои четири десеть ле́та | he did not return home for forty years.
He was just ceaselessly going on and fighting. |
And wherever he was attacking, he was victorious. |
And he was not stopping the fight in any way. |
He just beat the army. |
And thus his servants saw it - (those,) who were his baker, his cook, and his cupbearer. |
And the three of them agreed to poison King Alexander. |
Because they had been annoyed by the journeys, going each year with the king to fight. |
And for that (reason) the three of them agreed to poison the king, |
да ꙋмре дано́ би се разне́ла во́йска та | so that he would die, so that the army will be dispersed (?),
҆и ҆ѡ́ни да се приберꙋть на до́мь, сво́й | and so they would return home.
And they went into a city. |
And the king made camp at the edge of the city. |
And those three servants of the king saw a mulberry tree, green and pretty, a nice one. |
And they spread a tent for the king beneath the tree. |
And the king sat down beneath the tent into shadow. |
And the time came to eat bread. |
And the three servants of the king thought, how they could get an opportunity to poison the king. |
And one of them, |
щото слꙋ́жеше вино́ сáсь чáшꙋ, цр҃ꙋ на трьпе́зꙋ | who served wine to the king with a cup at a table,
҆и ѡнь се чꙋдеше кáкво̀ цр҃а да ҆ѡ́тро́ви | he, too, wondered, how to poison the king,
да би ꙋ҆мрель | so that he would die,
да сѝ ҆идꙋть све́ки на до́мь сво́й | so that everyone would go to his home.
Because the endless bloodshed became very annoying to them. |
And the servant of the king took the poison. |
And he smeared the poison on the mulberry tree, on one leaf. |
And they brought bread and (other?) food to the king. |
And the king began to eat. |
And that servant poured a cup of wine to the king. |
And he suddenly (?) said, that the cup is somewhat dusted. |
And he reached with hand upwards to the tree. |
And he plucked the leaf, which had been smeared with poison. |
And he dipped the leaf into the cup at once, |
като че щѐ да йзвади рꙋ́сь сась ли́сто ҆ись чáша та | as if to remove the dust with the leaf from the cup.
And he washed the leaf with the poison in the cup. |
And he gave (it) to the king. |
And the king drank. |
And after some time, the king began to jitter. |
And he began to throw himself to the ground. |
And it became very torturing for him. |
And the time of death came: The king will die. |
And all the viziers of the king assembled soon. |
And all the boyars assembled, and all the princes, |
҆и сви́ вое́води ҆и сви кадїи ҆и свѐ во́йнство цр҃ево | and all the commanders, and all the judges, and all the king's soldiers,
да ви́дꙋть каквá би та҆ꙗ́ рабо́та | to see, what was that, what happened.
And until they could assemble to see (what happened), the king died. |
And those viziers said: |
Quickly tear up a mule to put it around the king, so that he would not die!ʺ |
And they put the king inside, into the body of the mule. |
They left only his head outside, so that the king would become alive again. |
And he could not. |
But he died. |
And thus, in that time, King Alexander ended his soul (i.e. died). |
 | Пре́дь самрь́ть цр҃евꙋ три чети́ри днѝ ко́нь цр҃евь що го сáмь цр҃ь ҆ꙗ́здеше ҆ѡ́нь токо̀ цвилѝ | The king's horse, on whom the king himself was riding three (or) four days before his death, he only neighed. |
And he kicked with his legs. |
And from his eyes tears were flowing like a hailstorm. |
And he neighed. |
 | ҆и копáе | And he kicked. |
And the horse cries for his lord. |
And the horse was getting tired of sorrow. |
And the vizier said: |
Go (and) release and unbind the horse,ʺ |
да ви́димо дали́ ще сторѝ ко́нь не́коѧ чꙋдеса ҆или некое знаме́нїе | ʺso that we see, if the horse will do some miracle or some sign!ʺ
And people came. |
And they released and unbound the horse. |
And, the poor horse, how terribly he galloped down through that mighty army! |
And how terribly he neighed! |
And how bloody tears did he shed from his eyes! |
And how terribly did he bite his flesh! (?) |
And he ran. |
And he neighed. |
And he looked around, to find the man, who poisoned the king. |
The horse ran. |
And he searched. |
And the army was stepping aside. |
And after some time, the king began to jitter. |
And he caught him with the teeth. |
And he bite all of his flesh with the teeth. |
And he broke all of his bones and joints because of his master, king Alexander. |
Thus also the king's cupbearer badly ended his life. |
Thus the viziers of Alexander wrote. |
This famous miracle (happened) for a sign and praise of the king. |
Such an end King Alexander received. |
And that is his royal glory and honor. |
