Thus Asen defeated the Greeks. |
And he expelled them from the land of Bulgaria. |
From there he went on against Serbs with an army. |

And because (?) a lot of bloodshed, Emperor Asen expelled Serbs and Greeks from Bulgaria. |

After John, Greek Emperor Alexius rose up. |
And he assembled an army from many nations. |
And he went against Bulgaria. |
When they began to fight, Bulgars defeated the Greeks. |
And Emperor Alexius ran away. |
And how heartily did he run! |
Even his royal helmet fell from his head! |
And Bulgarian warriors took that helmet. |
And they brought it to their Emperor Asen. |
Thus, again, Bulgars defeated the Greeks. |
And that time Emperor Asen took many cities from Greeks. |
Again, for the second time, Emperor Alexius took a lot of troops. |
And he sent against Asen a great and powerful terror (?), and Constantine and (his) generals (?) |
There were a lot of troops, and Greek generals, and commanders, and princes, and zhupans. |
And the army was (of) 270 thousand (men). |
But, by the will of God, Bulgars defeated them. |
And they subdued (them). |
And not a single commander returned to Emperor Alexius. |
There was such an unspeakable bloodshed. |
When Emperor Alexius heard, how many troops were destroyed, |
҆ꙋплáши се стрáшно ҆и тврь́де ѕлѐ | he was terribly and very badly scared.
And he sent his men to sue Emperor Asen for peace. |
But he did not receive (the peace). |
He sent, again, for the third time, an army against Emperor Asen. |
But Emperor Asen was defeating him many times. |
But Emperor Alexius sent a fourth army against Asen, with some general Isaac (Seba)stocrator. |
That Isaac killed three thousand Bulgars. |
Afterwards, Bulgars captured Emperor Alexius. |
And they surrounded the whole Greek army. |
Thus they mowed them down and captured. |
A few of them ran away. |
Thus the Greek land remained deserted, without army. |
The Greeks themselves thus count (their losses), in truth and justice: |
Three hundred thousand Greek troops were slaughtered and captured by Bulgars. |
Thus, in that time, made the emperor his revenge against Greek emperors. |
Because they first did a lot of evil to Bulgars. |
But a double revenge was returned to them. |
They did not believe, that Emperor Asen by the will of God was installed as an Emperor of Bulgaria. |
But they blasphemed against him. |
And they were raising armies so many times against him. |
But he did not go against them in any way. |
But as they were coming against him, he was defeated them staunchly with the help of God. |
 | ҆и тáко за ·н· го́динѝ непрестáно брáнь чини́ли грьци сась ҆ꙗ́сена цр҃а догдѐ погꙋби́ли свѐ своѐ войньствѡ́ | And thus, the Greeks were constantly battling Asen for 50 years, until they lost all their army. |
And their kingdom was impoverished. |
Then Emperor Alexius submitted to Asen, the great emperor. |
And he was paying tax, as long as Asen, Emperor of Bulgaria, reigned. |
And he took an immense amount of tax from Greek emperors. |
And thus Greeks and Bulgars stopped the fight, so that they won't fight (again?) |
Asen subdued them under his might. |
And thus he became famous on the Earth. |
Because he subdued many kings and emperors. |
Thus he was called an Emperor of the Universe. |
Because he had Roman caesars as his taxpayers. |
And Asen subdued many other kings under his might. |
Thus he had holy men and patriarchs (around himself?) |
And he listened to them humbly. |
And they led him to a great virtue. |
| And his name was glorious. |
