18: i kogi prizoveše siromasi u domъ svoi And when he called the poor to his house,

19: i sam si na noze stoeše And he stood alone on his legs.

21: a onъ samъ na devetъ časa xlebъ edeše And he himself ate bread at nine o'clock.
22: i negovi srodnici mlogo puti go srъdexu sasъ nixъno to bezъumъstvo And his relatives were many times angry with him because of their folly.
23: i dumaxa mu And they were telling him:
24: ti tolъko si člvekъ boljarinъ ʺYou are such a noble man!ʺ
25: pa zašto samъъ stoišъ na noze ʺSo why do you stay on your feet?ʺ
26: i služišъ na tija siromasi ʺAnd (why do you) serve those poor ones?ʺ
27: zašto ne zapovedašъ na slugi te svoi da imъ sluguvatъ ʺWhy don't you command your servants to serve them?ʺ
28: a tebe ne e prilično da imъ sluguešъ ʺFor (lit. and, but) it is not appropriate to you to serve them.ʺ

33: i koi sluguva siromaxu samomu xrtu sluguva ʺAnd he who serves a poor one, serves the Christ Himself.ʺ

35: i ona beše žena razumna i počitna And she was a wise and respectable woman.

40: i rodixu sina And they gave birth to a son.
41: i narekoxa mu ime aleѯia And they gave him the name Alexius.
42: i golema radostъ imaxu And they had a great joy.
43: i očuvaxa go And they raised him.
44: i poraste And he grew up.
45: i dadoxa go da se nauči knigu And they gave him (to teachers) to learn literature.
46: i beše ostroumno dete And he was a clever (lit. sharp-minded) child.
47: i skoro nauči bžtveno pisanie And he learned the Holy Scripture soon.
48: i beše sovrъšenъ mudrecъ And he was (became?) a perfect sage.
49: i pomisli na svoi pametъ And he thought in his mind.
50: i poče da nenavidi toja stъ And he began to hate this world.
51: i fanu da mrazi imane srebro i zlato And he began to hate property, silver and gold.
52: i pomisli da si spi dšu And he thought about saving his soul.
53: i neprestano bgu se moleše And he prayed to God without stopping,
dano bi go bgъ spodobilъ u crtvo svoe nbnoe so that God makes him worthy of His Kingdom of Heaven.
54: i napravi si riza ot kozinu And he made himself a fur shirt.
55: i obleče ju na sebe na golo And he put it on himself on the naked (skin).
56: i ot gore noseše svileni drexi And over (it) he was wearing silken clothes.
57: i pokrivaše kozinava ta riza And he was covering the furry shirt,
da ju ne vidi nikoi so that nobody sees it,
niti da se dosetat negovi roditele and so that his parents won't find out.
58: i oni po malo doseštaxu se kakvo nenavidit aleѯia da sedi u mirъ And (but?) they were little by little getting the idea, that Alexius hates to stay in the civilized world,

59: nъ se potkanixu da go oženutъ po skoro But they decided to wed him soon,
da ne bi negde otišlъ po manastire so that he would not leave for some monasteries,
da gi ostavi leaving them.

ot blagъ rodъ i bogata from a good family and rich.
61: i aleѯia za ženidbu i ne misleše And (but?) Alexius did not think about marriage.
62: tъkmo gore na nba misleše He was thinking only upwards, towards (?) the heavens.
63: i žaleše And he was sad.
64: zašto se beše vъselilъ dxъ sti u negovo srdce Because the Holy Spirit had settled itself in his heart.
65: i na roditele svoi dumaše kakvo ne šte da se ženi i da ima mlogo griža i prebitlъkъ And he was telling his parents, that he did not want to marry, and to have many worries and (material?) profits.
66: a oni go molexu da gi posluša da go oženatъ But they prayed him to listen to them, to (let them) wed him.
67: zašto posle ne možat da naidutъ takava izbrana devica Because afterwards they cannot (were not going to be able?) find such an exquisite maiden.
68: i misleše aleѯia da sotvori volju ocu svoemu i maike si And Alexius was thinking about fulfilling the wish of his father and his mother.

90: i ostavi si xubavu mladu nevestu na svilenu postilkju And he left his beautiful, young bride on the silken bed.
91: i doide na krai more And he came to the sea shore.
92: i naide edin korabъ privezanъ And he found one tied ship.
93: stoeše prazdenъ It stood empty.
94: i uleze u nego And he entered it.
95: i plava po more to do gradъ laodikia And he sailed on the sea to the city of Laodicea.
96: pa izleze iz koraba na suxu zemlju And then he stepped out of the ship on the dry ground.
97: i pomoli se bgu And he prayed to God.
98: i reče And he said:
99: bže mltivi ti si sotvorilъ nebo i zemlju ʺO merciful God, you have created the heavens and the earth.ʺ
100: i mene začuvai ot toja lъžovni stъ da ne pogibnemъ i ja sasъ ne dostoini ʺProtect me, too, from that deceitful world, so that I don't perish with the unworthy.ʺ
101: no spodobi me gdi ot desnuju tebe sasъ sti tvoi što su tebe ugodili ʺBut make me worthy, o Lord, (to stand) at your right (side) with your saints, who had pleased you.ʺ

104: i poide da ulezne u gradъ laodikiju And he went to enter the city of Laodicea.
105: i u toę časъ go srešnaxu člveci što gi beše pratilъ bašta mu da go tražutъ And in that moment, people, whom had sent his father to search for him, have met him.
106: i ideše kamъto gradъ zaedno sasъ nix And he went to the city together with them.
107: i uleze u gradъ And he entered the city.
108: i prodade si svileni te drexi ot sebe And he sold all the silk clothes from him.
109: i obleče se u drugi drexi grozni i razdrani And he clothed himself in other clothes - ugly and torn ones.
110: i što beše uzelъ ot doma si srebro i zlato sve go razdade na siromasi And the gold and silver, which he took from the home, he distributed it all among the poor.
111: i onъ sedeše kato prosjak na crkovni vrata And he sat as a beggar at the church door.
112: i posteše se ot nedelja do nedelja And he was fasting from Sunday to Sunday.
113: uzimaše nafora He was taking communion.
114: i edeše po dve ugli xlebъ siirečъ po dva drama And he was eating two ounces of bread, that is two drams.
115: i po dve čaši vodu pieše And he was drinking two cups of water.
116: i dogde bi tamo na taja crkva svu nošt ne speše And as he was at that church, he did not sleep the whole night.
117: sve se bgu moleše He was only praying to God.
118: i što mu človeci za bga davaxu And what the people were giving him for God (alms),
onъ i tova na siromasi davaše he was giving even that to the poor.
119: a bašta mu pušti člveci da go tražutъ nizъ gradъ laodikiju And his father sent people to search for him in the city of Laodicea.
120: i ne naidoxa go And they did not find him.
121: i otidoxu u gradъ efesъ And they went to the city of Ephesus.
122: i tražixu And they searched (for him).
123: i naidoxa go And they found him.
124: ali ne možexu da go poznajutъ But they could not recognize him.
125: i dadoxa mu za bga kato na prosjaka And they gave him (alms) for God, as to a beggar.
126: i otidoxu si slugi te baštini mu And the servants of his father went away.
127: a onъ nixъ pozna And he recognized them.
128: i ne šteja da im se prikaže And (but?) he did not want to make himself known to them.
129: no mlъčeše But he was silent.
130: i bga neprestano moleše And he prayed to God without stopping.
131: i reče aleѯia And Alexius said:
132: slava tebe gospodi ʺGlory (be) to you, o Lord!ʺ
133: kakvo mi doidoxu domašni rabi ʺHow the servants of my house came!ʺ
134: i ne poznaxu me ʺAnd they did not recognize me!ʺ
135: i dadoxu mi za bga mltinju ʺAnd they gave me alms for God!ʺ
136: kogi obidoxu po sela i po gradove i po mntire i nigde go ne naidoxu When they went around the villages and the cities and the monasteries, they did not find him anywhere.
137: i nigde go ne razbraxu And they did not understand him (his location?) anywhere.
138: i vrъnaxu se nazadъ u rimъ gradъ And they returned back to the city of Rome.
139: i otidoxu si u domъ svoi And they returned to their home.
140: i kazaxu efimianu ocu aleѯinomu kakvo nigde ne su razbrali aleѯiju And they told Euphemianus, that they had not understood (location of) Alexius anywhere.
141: togiva golema skrъbъ postignu efimiana Then, a great sorrow afflicted Euphemianus.
142: i svi srodnici negovi oskrъbexu And all of his relatives became sad.
143: i svъ grad malo i golemo požali aleѯovu ženidbu And the whole city more or less was sad because of the Alexius' wedding.
144: i samъ crъ zaplaka se And the Emperor himself cried.
145: bašta mu i maika mu nikogi ne utešъvaxu se His father and his mother were never consolated.
146: plačexu žalъno za nego They cried bitterly for him.
147: a zlobidna maika negova zatvori sebe u edna tesna kelia And his misfortunate mother closed herself in a small room.
148: i sobleče mlogoceni drexi ot sebe And she put off the precious clothes from her.
149: i obleče se u razdrani črъni And she put on torn, black (clothes).
150: i posipa si glavu sasъ pepelъ And she spilled ash on her head.
151: i plačeše gorъko i žalъno za sina svoego aleѯiju And he cried bitterly and sadly for his son Alexius.
152: i zločesta mlada nevesta aleѯova plačeše za svoe zlopolučenie kakvo skoro obdove And the misfortunate young bride of Alexius cried for her misfortune, how quickly she became a widow.
153: i tako plačeše mlada nevesta And thus the young bride cried.
154: i žalъni dumi dumaše And she spoke sorrowful words.
155: ot aleѯie ljubimiče moi zašto bi tolъko ne milostivъ ʺO Alexius, my beloved, why you were so merciless?ʺ

189: i sede u korabu And he sat in the ship.
190: i misleše da ide u tarъsiski gradъ And he thought about going to the city of Tarsus.
191: i tamo imaše prexubava crkva aptlu pavlu And there was a very beautiful church of St. Paul.
192: tamo misleše aleѯia da sedi There, Alexius thought about sitting down,
i nikoi da go ne poznae kakvъ e i ot kude e and that nobody will recognize him, who he is, and where is he from.
193: i kato plavaše po more to And as he was sailing on the sea,
i otvodeše u tarъsiski gradъ and going towards the city of Tarsus,
i z božiemъ poveleniemъ izvi se protivni vetrъ by the command of God, an adverse wind came up.
194: i obrъnu korabu na drugu stranu And it turned the ship to the other side.
195: i poxodi nekolъko dni And he went on (?) for some days.

205: što imamъ rabotu po čuždi domove da dosaždam ʺWhy (?) should I (lit. what work I have to) annoy houses of strangers?ʺ
206: no da idemъ u doma ocu moemu da sedimъ okajani ja ʺBut may I go to my father's house, to sit (there), the wretched myself.ʺ
207: kude li mislex da idemъ ʺWhere to did I think to go?ʺ
208: kude li me bgъ spodobi ʺWherever God makes me to!ʺ
209: i otide aleѯia u crkvu And Alexius went to the church,

da mu pomogne što e namislilъ da sotvori to help him (with) what he thought to do.
210: kogi izleze isъ crkvu srete oca svoego When he left the church, he met his father.

212: i po nego mlogo slugi idexu And many servants went behind him.
213: i pokloni se aleѯia do zemli And Alexius bowed to the ground.
214: i reče mu And he said to him:
215: gdne molimъ tvoe blgorodie ʺO lord, I pray your highness!ʺ
216: sotvori mltъ sasъ mene ʺShow me your mercy!ʺ
217: če smъ čuždinecъ ʺFor I am a stranger.ʺ
218: i bezъ domъ smъ ispadnulъ ʺAnd I have fallen (to the state of being) without a house.ʺ
219: i ne mamъ gde glavu da podъklonimъ ʺAnd I have no (place), where to lay my head.ʺ
220: priimi me u domъ tvoi stranago ʺAccept me, the stranger, into your household!ʺ
221: i poxrani me sasъ trošici gdeto padatъ ot trapezu tvoju ʺAnd feed me with the crumbs which fall from your table!ʺ
222: gdne priimi me ne poznanago ʺO lord, accept me, the unknown one!ʺ
223: če i ti imašъ gladnika ʺFor you have a hungry one too.ʺ
224: i xodi po čuždi zemli ʺAnd he walks in foreign lands.ʺ
225: da te spodobi bgъ da go vidišъ ʺMay God makes you worthy of seeing him.ʺ
226: kogi ču efimianъ takviva dumi i pomenu sina svoego aleѯiju As Euphemianus heard the words, he remembered his son Alexius.
227: i sažale mu se tešъko And he was overcome by heavy sorrow.
228: i reče ednomu slugu svoemu verъnomu And he said to one his loyal servant:
229: priimi togova čuždinъca ʺTake that stranger!ʺ
230: i drugo ništo da ne rabotišъ ʺAnd may you do nothing else,ʺ

235: i vodicu pieše And he was drinking water.
236: i tova sasъ meru And (he was doing even) that with measure.
237: i svaku nedelju pričaštavaše se And he was taking communion every Sunday.
238: i tova ne može da trъpi vragъ And the Enemy could not suffer this.
239: vozъdviže na nego golema borъba He stirred against him a great upheaval,
da napravi pakostъ to make injustice,
da go iskaratъ izъ keliju tu so that they would expel him from the room.
240: i ne može And he could not.
241: posle dignu diavol svi te slugi efimianovi Then the Devil stirred all the servants of Euphemianus,
da mu tvorut ošte po mlogo pakostъ so that they would do him even more injustice,
davno bi pobegnulъ ili da pofuli na bga so that he would run away or curse against God.
242: edni go ѱuvaxu Some were cursing him.
243: drugi go ukorъvaxu Others were deriding him.
244: i smeexa mu se And they were making fun of him.
245: i posipuvaxa go sasъ pepelъ And they were spilling ash on him.
246: i podlevaxu go sasъ vodu And they were pouring water on him.
247: i biexa go And they were beating him.
248: a onъ tvrъdo trъpeše And he was staunchly enduring.

da priidešъ gdeto ne imat ni skrъbъ ni pečalъ ni vozdixanie ʺso that you come there, where is neither sorrow, nor sadness, nor moaning.ʺ

346: i za uverenie zapisa u knigu tu da verujutъ kako e bilъ samъ aleѯia u domъ oca svoego And he wrote into the book (evidence?) for (his relatives) to believe, that it was he, Alexius himself, (who was) in the house of his father.
347: i pisa kakvo taino xorotuva na svoju nevestu And he wrote, what he secretly said to his bride.
348: i dade i prъsten i poesъ i drugi nekoi potaini raboti And he gave her the ring, and the belt, and some other secret things.

383: i paki ot ne vidima priide glasъ And again, voice came out of nowhere:
384: vъ domъ efimianovъ tamo estъ člvekъ bžii ʺ(In) the house of Euphemianus, there is the Man of God.ʺ

397: i uzexu čtni ikoni slugi te efimianovi da posrešnutъ cra i patriarxa And the servants of Euphemianus took honorable icons to meet the Emperor and the Patriarch.

399: i sednaxu svi boljare na prestole And all the boyars sat on the thrones.
400: i efimianъ poče da pituva slugi svoi za onogova stranago člveka And Euphemianus began to ask his servants about that strange man.
