Title] when the day and the time comes to begin to search for a wife
Title] O Father, bless the (one) reading these words before the people |
He who loves Christian faith and wants to search for a wife, as it is a custom, |
дль́жень е͒ да прочетѐ ꙋ зако́на да ви́ди какво пи́шет ст҃и ҆áп͒ль пáвель | he should read in the Law, what is written by St. Paul the Apostle,
҆и да сѐ наꙋчи какво̀ да тво́ри | and to learn, what to do
Because when a woman is found and you want to take her, |
҆и ако бꙋде ѿ бащꙋ и ѿ мáйкꙋ не наꙋчена и не ҆испедеѱана | and if she will not be raised and taught properly by her father and her mother,
҆и ҆áко бꙋде безь҆о́чли́ва ҆и безьсрáмна и ꙋстáта (҆и) сластолю́бица ҆и пи҆ꙗ́ница | or if she will be unrespectful, and speaking too much, and lustful, and a drunkard,
какво̀ можешь да ю претрьпишь | how would you be able to suffer her?
And if she will be an unbeliever, and a sorceress, and a diviner, and sarcastic, |
҆и за това си дль́жень да ю претрьпишь | even then you have to suffer her
Because of that you should have had four eyes: |
Watch well, from what kind of family you take the wife |
Because a woman thinks every time about what is the worst |
So that she does thus |
Thus the Enemy teaches a woman, to do evil |
If she would be an adulterer, you are not going to suffer her |
But leave her, so that you will not lose your head about her |
But leave her |
And cast her away from you |
And take another |
Because if you marry such a woman, you bring a lot of troubles and sin on yourself |
That is why I said to you: |
If one wants to marry, he should have four eyes, |
да избе́ре се́бе женꙋ̀ да бꙋде ѿ бащꙋ наꙋчена нá свекакво добро | to choose a woman taught by her father to all the good,
҆и ѿ мáйкꙋ ҆испеде́ѱана ҆и наказана да е крот͛ка ҆и сми́рена ҆и покорли́ва | and raised and disciplined by her mother to be humble, and peaceful, and meek,
҆и срáмна ҆и мꙋдра ҆и бг҃ꙋбо҆ꙗ́зна | and shy, and wise, and fearing God
Choose such a child |
And marry |
And God will help you to create a house and home with a well-minded bride |
Thus we are taught by the holy Law of Christ |
Think yourself: |
When you buy a house, or a vineyard, or a servant, or a horse, |
҆áко ти́ не сꙋ ꙋго́дни ле́сно можеш да гѝ врь́нешь | if you will not like them, you can easily return them
But if a wife will not be to your liking, you cannot return her |
That is why the Law writes to have four eyes when looking, what woman are you taking |
For if she will be poor and bad, more likely you can get her away |
But if she would be rich, you would (?) suffer much evil |
And you cannot easily get away from here |
For when a man finds an adulterous woman, |
не ꙋводи токо̀ сама себе ꙋ мꙋкꙋ вечнꙋю | she does not bring only herself to the eternal torment,
нь ҆и дрꙋги млого чл҃ве́ци ко́йто прихо́дꙋть при ню | but also many other people, who come to her
Thus they are taught by the Enemy |
And they take their lovers by magic |
And they finally give them over to death |
When a man sees such mindless women and sorceresses, then he is far from the help of God |
And the adulterous woman takes him on herself and to her will |
And she calls the Devil for help |
And she gives that man to the Devil's hands |
And then she remains for ashamed in front of all people and for reproach |
If you wish to save your soul, |
гри дꙗвол͛ски | do not go there, where there are devilish songs and dances,
҆и каде се гово́рꙋт кꙋрьварски дꙋми | and where adulterous words are being said
Because you fall into a deep pit |
But find humble and peaceful people, who fear God |
Communicate with this kind of people often |
And meet with such people, to you hear from them good words, |
҆и ти да се наꙋчишь да се бо́йшь бг҃ꙋ | so that you also learn how to fear God
And may your guardian angel never falls apart from you |
And when you see a beautiful woman, |
҆и прїйде ти зль помисль зá ню | and a bad thought about her comes to your mind,
҆а ти помислѝ какво̀ есѝ земл҆ꙗ́ ҆и прáхь ҆и пепель | then think about how you are of soil, dust and ashes
And put your hand to fire, if you can suffer fire |
Thus it is also to think of a strange woman |
And may you imagine an ill woman, laying and stinking |
What would you think? |
Or if you see an old woman, |
҆ѡслепела ҆и станꙋла гро́зна ҆и гнꙋсна | who became blind, and ugly, and disgusting,
помислѝ | think! | |
And say: |
That old woman, when she was young, how beautiful she was |
But now, her eyes (became) blind |
(Her) ears (are) deaf |
(Her) teeth fell out |
(Her) face became ugly |
Tears fall out of her eyes |
You are afraid and disgusted from looking at her |
And when the Enemy brings you a beatiful woman to your mind, |
҆á тѝ ско́ро принеси, старою ҆и гнꙋснꙋ бабꙋ | may you bring soon an old, disgusting wench
And what you thought of, will pass |
And many pretty girls die |
And then go after three days |
And see in the grave, what beauty there is |
And you cannot stand from that stinking corpse |
Do you see, people of God, how we get disgusted from a dead human body? |
Thus also God is disgusted from those people, who wish a beautiful body of a woman |
Thus also the Christ Himself said: |
He who sees a beautiful woman and thinks about her, |
като че се е ҆исходи́ль сась ню | he is like if he went together with her (to adultery)
Thus you should believe, when you see a (beautiful) face, |
҆á ти ꙋстреле́нь бꙋдꙋешь ѿ врáга | and when you are (as) shot by the Enemy
And it would be better that you would not see that face |
Because many women have a beautiful face |
But inside the heart they have some malady |
And you would start to be disgusted from her (because of it) |
And if a man would see a woman having scabies on herself, he would not look on her |
But you would run away too from her, |
да не префанешь зла крáста ҆и шꙋга ѿ не́ꙗ | so that you will not get bad scabies from her |
