| 2: | kakvo ne podobaetъ xrtianinu da bude tafraџia i kavgaџia i visokoumen | [Foreword] How it is inappropriate for a Christian to be a braggart and conflicting and haughty. |
| 3: | reče ♣ blženi ioanъ zlatoustъ | Blessed John Chrysostom said: |
| 4: | o člveče bžii kogi sakašъ visokoumnago člveka da ukrotišъ ne dei go mlogo učiti | O man of God, when you want to tame a haughty man, do not teach him a lot! |
| 5: | no malъko mu produmai nekoja rečъ mudra i izbrana | But tell him a bit of wise and chosen words. |
| 6: | ta mu reči | So tell him: |
| 7: | prinesi mu na pamet člvečeska sila i nemoštъ | Bring to his mind human strength and weakness! |
| 8: | ako ti posluša duma ta a ti paki reči mu | If he listens to your word, then tell him: |
| 9: | o člveče počto toliko voznosiši se | ʺO man, why do you brag about so much?ʺ |
| 10: | i pošto tolъko tafra činišъ | ʺO man, why do you show so much arrogance,ʺ |
| i digaši se na golemo kato divъ | ʺand raise yourself to heights as a wild one?ʺ | |
| 11: | ta ne vidiš li če si i ti člvekъ kato i nie | ʺAnd so you cannot see, that you are a human as we are?ʺ |
| 12: | i ti si zemlja i pepelъ kato i sveki člvekъ | ʺYou are, too, earth and ash, as every man!ʺ |
| 13: | zašto ni bgъ sozdade ot zemlju | Because God created us from the earth. |
| 14: | i ne može visokoumenъ člvekъ da poznae sebe če e i onъ zemlja i pepelъ | And a haughty man cannot know himself, that he is earth and ash too. |
| 15: | nelo se obzira na svoi xubavi premeni | Because he looks on his beautiful clothes. |
| 16: | i natafrilъ se | And he has decorated himself |
| 17: | i na golemo xodi i slavenъ na lъžovna pofala | And he walks as a great one, a glorious one, (following?) false praise. |
| 18: | i kogi imъ stojutъ slugi na noze na trъpezu i nimъ ošte po drago ide | And when servants stay for them by their feet at the table, they feel (lit. it goes) even more precious. |
| 19: | i počnutъ da se šeguvat sasъ nixъ | And they begin to make fun of them. |
| 20: | i smejutъ se | And they laugh. |
| 21: | i dumatъ svekakvi ne potrebni dumi | And they speak many inappropriate words. |
| 22: | i po tova ne može da poznae člvekъ kakvo šte da promine na toja stъ | And afterwards a man cannot know, how (?) will he pass into that world. |
| 23: | a zašto ne ide na grobišta | But why does he not go to a cemetery, |
| da vidi kakvo su grobove plъni sasъ kosti člvečeski smrъdlivi | to see, how the graves are full of stinking human bones? | |
| 24: | i ne može trъpeti tolъkova smradъ | And he cannot (would not?) stand so much stench. |
| 25: | nelo se obzira na xubavi premeni mlogoceni | Because he looks on his beautiful, precious clothes. |
| 26: | i paki da vi rečemъ | And let me tell you again: |
| 27: | ne poznavate li sebe če ste zemlja i pepelъ | Don't you know yourself, that you are earth and ash? |
| 28: | i smrъdlivo telo ne poznavate li slaboe | And you know not the stinking, weak body? |
| 29: | i kratko e člvečeski životъ | And the human life is short. |
| 30: | ne nadaite se koga približi samrъtъ | Have no hope, when the death comes closer! |
| 31: | togiva da se pokaete | Then, you should repent. |
| 32: | zašto togiva ne možešъ da poznaeš kakvo lesno priide samrъtъ | Because then, you will not be able to know, how easily death comes. |
| 33: | zašto e človekъ zemlja i pepelъ | Because human is earth and ash. |
| 34: | i ne može da vidi strašni anggeli | And he cannot see the terrible angels, |
| kakvo slazutъ ot nbsa | as they descend from the heavens, | |
| da mu zabiju sluxъ | to crush his hearing, | |
| da se ne pamti | so that he would not remember, | |
| na koi e stъ | on which world he is. | |
| 35: | no paki tegli | But still he draws (the hearing?) |
| 36: | i misli da ide na nebo | And he thinks, that he goes to the heavens. |
| 37: | no razumeite xrtiani | But do understand, o Christians! |
| 38: | po samrъtъ ne ma pokajanie | There is no repentance after the death! |
| 39: | kogi idešъ na onja stъ tamo i da davaš srebro ili zlato da se opravišъ predъ bga | When you go to the other world, you may (want to?) give there even silver or gold, to buy yourself out from God. |
| 40: | ili da se pokaešъ tamo | Or you may (want to?) repent there. |
| 41: | ne ma koi da uzme srebro i zlato da te otduma predъ bga | (But) there is no one to take silver and gold from you, to defend you in front of God. |
| 42: | nelo dogde si živъ na toja suetni stъ pokai se | So, repent, as long as you are alive in this vain world! |
| 43: | i pomoli se bgu | And pray to God! |
| 44: | i proslъzi se | And shed tears! |
| 45: | i pomisli za strašni sudъ bžii | And think about the terrible judgement of the God! |
| 46: | a ne podnosi se na golemo | And do not take yourself for great! |
| 47: | zašto životъ člveku lesno dotraiva | Because the human life easily ends. |
| 48: | paki reče sti ioanъ zlatoustъ | St. John Chrysostom also said: |
| 49: | o člveče bžii takviva dumi i cru reči | O man of God, say such words even to a king! |
| 50: | ne boi se ot negovъ venecъ crki i ot xubavi premeni negovi | Have no fear from his kingly wreath and nice clothes! |
| 51: | zašto tako reče božestvenoe pisanie | For thus says the divine Scripture. |
| 52: | vasaka slava člvečeska kato trava i kato cvetъ i kato rosa utrenja | All the glory of humans (is) like grass, and like a flower, and like the morning dew. |
| 53: | no ti visokoumni člveče pošto se tolъko podnosišъ | But you, o haughty man, why do you take yourself for so great? |
| 54: | pošto se tolъko veličaešъ | Why do you proclaim yourself so great? |
| 55: | ti li si sotvorilъ nbo i zemlju | Did you create the heavens and the earth? |
| 56: | ja padni ot visoko mesto na zemi | Fall from a high place to the ground! |
| 57: | nali xočešъ da se ubiešъ | Would you not kill yourself? |
| 58: | smisli sъga svoju nemoštъ kakva e bila kratъka | Think of your weakness, how short it has been! |
| 59: | a ne dlъgi životъ | And (it was not?) a long life! |
| 60: | po dobre bi ti bilo da ti zapoveduetъ drugi | It would be better for you, if another would command you, |
| negli ti da zapoveduešъ drugomu | than that you would command another one. | |
| 61: | koja faida imašъ da si načelnikъ drugomu | What advantage do you have, when you are a chief to another one? |
| 62: | no samъ sebe da si sluguvašъ | But serve yourself! |
| 63: | i pomisli za grexъ svoi | And think of your sin! |
| 64: | togiva se naričašъ kako prodani robъ | Then you are named as a sold slave! |
| 65: | koja e pofala člveku | What praise is for a human? |
| 66: | da e gospodinъ i načelъnikъ | To be a lord and chief? |
| 67: | i posle da go bijutъ negovi rabi i slugi | And then, to be beaten by slaves and servants? |
| 68: | kogi e člvekъ osuždenъ i bitъ i ukorenъ | If a man is convicted, and beaten, and humbled, |
| kakvo smee da zapoveduetъ nadъ mlogo ljudie | how can he command over many people? | |
| 69: | o bezumni člveče dša tvoja biena i sakrušena | O mindless man, your soul (is) beaten and broken! |
| 70: | i po svude ima rani ot grexovei tvoi | And it has wounds from your sins everywhere. |
| 71: | a ti tolъko se podnosišъ če imašъ tolъko mlogo žlъtici okajane | And you boast so much, that you have a lot of golden coins, you wretch! |
| 72: | i imašъ mlogo slugi | And (you boast that) you have a lot of servants. |
| 73: | nъ tija slugi ne su tvoi | But those servants are not yours! |
| 74: | ako mene ne veruešъ smotri po prežni te bogati ljudie | If you don't believe me, look at earlier rich people! |
| 75: | i nauči se | And learn! |
| 76: | ako li i ot nixъ ne štešъ se naučiti a ti počekai malo | If you will not even from them learn (something), wait shortly! |
| 77: | i sam xočešъ videti | And you will see for yourself. |
| 78: | togiva ni edna pomošt ne štešъ da imašъ ot suetno bogatъstvo kogi fanešъ da berešъ dšu | When you start to take (?) soul, you will have no help from your wealth. |
| 79: | togiva ni edinъ časъ ne možešъ biti da gospodaruvašъ | |
| 80: | togiva i nei sakašъ da vidišъ svoe bogatъstvo eli e mlogo ili e malъko | Then you will not even want to see your wealth, be it big or small. |
| 81: | a ne znaeš li člveče če imane e kato sažъdi i prax i pepelъ i kato slama i seno | And don't you know, o man, that wealth is like soot, and dust, and ash, and like hay? |
| 82: | tolika e i člvečeska sila | So big is the human power. |
| 83: | i ne možešъ da poznaešъ sebe če si i ti takovъ | And you cannot know, that you are such, too! |
| 84: | nelo se podnosišъ sa xubavi premeni i sasъ mlogo imane | Because you brag about with nice clothes and a lot of wealth! |
| 85: | a jutre i ti umirašъ kato i onija člveci štoto su siromasi | And tomorrow, you (are going to) die, as those people, who are poor. |
| 86: | imane kato na sъnъ bivaetъ kogi sъnuvašъ noštemъ če si stanulъ crovъ namesnikъ | Wealth is often like in a dream, when you dream in the night, that you had become a royal official. |
| 87: | i kogi se razbudišъ a ti si paki člvek kakvoto si bilъ | And when you wake up, you are again a human, as you were before. |
| 88: | tako e i mlogo imane po pravdu i po istinu | Such is the wealth by justice and truth. |
| 89: | skoro xočet videti takovi bogatъ svoe imane kakvo sve xoče da ostane na toja stъ | Such a rich one will soon see his wealth (in a way), that all will remain in this world. |
| 90: | a člveku telo črъvja izidaju | And the worms eat the body of a human. |
| 91: | i ništo ne može da uzme ot svoe to imane | And he cannot take anything from his wealth. |
| 92: | tъkmo grexъ breme teško | Only sin - the heavy burden. |
| 93: | tъkъmo po pravdu i po istinu | Only (sin) - by justice and truth. |
| 94: | tako rekoša crkovni naši učitele | Thus spoke our Church Fathers. |
| 95: | smirenъ člvekъ i krotokъ ot svude imatъ pofala i ot bga i ot člveci | A humble and meek man has praise from everywhere - from both God and humans. |
| 96: | xubava premena e člveku mudra glava i smireno srdce | Nice clothes for a human are a wise head and a humble heart. |
| 97: | smirenago člveka sveki miluva | Everyone loves a humble man. |
| 98: | i bgъ mu pomaga | And God helps him. |
| 99: | i grexъ mu bgъ oprošteva | And God forgives his sin. |
| 100: | tъkmo vrag ne ljubi smirenago člveka | Only the Enemy does not love the humble man. |
| 101: | što piše u stoe pisanie | As it is written in the Holy Scripture: |
| 102: | ot goleminju i ot visokoumie ništo po zlo drugo ne ma na toja stъ | There is nothing worse in this world than pride and arrogance. |
| 103: | zašto u prežno vreme beše edinъ anggelъ | Because there was an angel in previous times. |
| 104: | i poče da se golemi | And he began to be arrogant. |
| 105: | i stanu diavolъ | And he became the Devil. |
| 106: | i beše stъ | And he was saint. |
| 107: | posle stanu tma i pomračenъ | Then he became darkness and clouded. |
| 108: | toi i adama izmami | It was he, who deceived Adam. |
| 109: | i reče mu | And he said to him: |
| 110: | adame ti šteše da stanešъ bgъ | ʺO Adam, you would have become a god.ʺ |
| 111: | i adamъ togiva poče da se veliči | Then Adam began to make himself important. |
| 112: | prestupi zapovedъ bži | (And) he transgressed against the law of God. |
| 113: | i otpadei ot slavu bžiju | And he fell from the glory of God. |
| 114: | zašto vragъ znaeše če beše adamъ besamrъtenъ | Because the enemy knew, that Adam was immortal. |
| 115: | i kogi otpade ot slavu bžiju togiva poče negovo roždenie da umira | And when he fell from the glory of God, then his kin began to die. |
| 116: | tako i blženago iova vragъ voznenavide | Thus the Enemy also began to hate blessed Job. |
| 117: | i obori domъ negov | And he destroyed (?) his house. |
| 118: | i po sve to mu telo rani napravi | And he made him wounds all over the body |
| 119: | poxraka go diavolъ | The Devil scrubbed (?) him. |
| 120: | i proču se negovo dlъgo trъpenie po svu zemlju | And his long suffering became known all over the land. |
| 121: | zašto diavolъ negovi čeda pogubi | Because Devil killed his children. |
| 122: | i bogatъstvo negovo dovrъši | And he ended his wealth. |
| 123: | i telo mu izъgnoi | And he made his body full of pus. |
| 124: | i živago črъvja izedoša | And worms ate him alive. |
| 125: | i nastavi diavolъ ženu iovinu na lošъ pametъ da dosadi iovu mužu svoemu | And Devil incited the wife of Job to bad thoughts to annoy Job, |
| dano bi nešto poxulilъ na bga | so that he would blaspheme against God, | |
| da go bgъ voznenavidi da otpadne ot glavu bžiju | so that God would begin to hate him, to make him fall from glory of God. | |
| 126: | da ne beše bila milos bžia na nasъ sve bi vragъ otъvnulъ ot nasъ | If there was no mercy of God, Devil would tear everyone away from us (?) |
| 127: | i sъvъ stъ bi pogubilъ | And he would destroy the whole world. |
| 128: | takovja e zlъ i ljutъ zverъ i prokletъ diavolъ | Such an evil, and fierce, and accursed beast is the Devil. |
| 129: | i ne imatъ nasištenie zlo da tvori | And he is never satisfied in doing evil. |
| 130: | zatova bgъ ne dade djavolu da ima volju na sve | That is why God did not give Devil (lit. to have) the power over everything. |
| 131: | tako bgъ sotvori mltъ i člvekoljubie † | Thus God did mercy and love of humans. |
| 132: | tomu že slava i čtъ i poklonenie | And to him (we give) glory and honor and respect, |
| beznačalъnomu ocu so edinorodnimъ tvoimъ sinomъ | to unbegotten Father, with Your Single-Born Son, | |
| i prestim i blgimъ i životvoreštimъ tvoimъ dxomъ | and Your Most Holy and Good and Life-Giving Spirit, | |
| nině i prisno i vo veki vekov | now and ever and forever! | |
