1: | сло́во ҆ижѐ во ст҃и ҆оц҃а нáшего ♣ ҆и҆ѡ҆ана ни́щолюби́ваго ҆и злато҆ꙋстаго | [Title] Homily of our father John the Poor-Loving and Golden-Mouthed (Chrysostom). |
2: | оч҃е бл͒глови, проче́сти ст҃ое | [Title] O Father, bless the reader of the holy (Scripture?)! |
3: | Какво заповедꙋ́еть нáмь ст҃и ҆иѡˇань злáтоꙋсть | What does St. John Chrysostom tell us: |
4: | послꙋ́шайте ѡ͒; не сми́слени чл҃веци; | Listen, o imprudent people! |
5: | пощо́ се не смисли́те | Why don't you start to think? |
6: | защо се не разꙋме́ете | Why don't you become reasonable? |
7: | защо́ се не ꙋплашите ѿ бг҃а | Why don't you fear God? |
8: | защо престꙋпꙋ́ете заповед бж҃ию | Why do you transgress the command of God? |
9: | защо проклинꙗ́ете сáми се́бе | Why do you curse yourselves? |
10: | защо ҆ѡбезьчествꙋ́ете се ҆ѡка҆ꙗ́ни | Why do you, wretched ones, make yourselves lose honor? |
11: | защо толи́ко зло́ тво́рите | Why do you do so much evil? |
12: | ҆и помишлꙗ́ете кáко не ймать стрáшни сꙋ́дь ҆и мꙋче́нїе | And you think, that there is no terrible Judgement and (Eternal) Torment! |
13: | ҆и говори́те | And you say: |
14: | чл҃веколюби́вь е͒ бг҃ь ҆и мл͒ти́вь | ʺGod is human-loving and merciful.ʺ |
15: | ҆и не хощеть мꙋчи́ти злѝ ҆и гре́шни чл҃веци | ʺAnd He will not torture bad and sinful people.ʺ |
16: | добрѐ ре́кли е́сте по ҆истинꙋ ҆и по прáвдꙋ | You have spoken in truth and justice. |
17: | лю́би бг҃ь чл҃веци | God (indeed) loves humans. |
18: | нь ҆и по прáвдꙋ сꙋ́ди ко́йто сьгрешают ҆и творꙋть зло на све́ки де́нь | But He also justly judges (those), who sin and do evil every day, |
҆и не ҆имꙋть гри́жа да сѐ покають | and do (lit. have) not care to repent. | |
19: | не лѝ сꙋ; ти́ꙗ досто́йни за мꙋченїе | Are those not worthy of torment? |
20: | да бех͛мо ни́ꙗ твори́ли заповедь ҆и во́лю, бж҃ию не би́ се толи́ко бг҃ь расрьди́ль на нась | If we would do God's commands and will, God would not become angry with us. |
21: | мо́жете ли ре́к͛ти како не согрешáвате нá вьсаки чáсь | Can you say, that you don't sin every moment? |
22: | нь мл͒тиви бг҃ь не срьди́ се защо млого сьгрешáваме | But the merciful God is not angry, because we do sins a lot. |
23: | нь се срьди защо се никак не покáйваме | But He is angry, because we do not repent in any way, |
҆и никак се за бг҃а не сещаме | and (because) we don't think about God at all. | |
24: | рече́те | (Let you) say: |
25: | сáми ѿ се́бе мо́жете ли нáйти неко́ꙗ ви́на на ти҆ꙗ́, ре́чи | Can you find something wrong (?) on those words? |
26: | не ли́ ви бг҃ь пре́жде наꙋчи | Did God not teach you earlier? |
27: | не ли́ ви скáза какво̀ законь да дрьжи́те ҆и какво да верꙋ́ете ҆име хр͒тово ҆и ка;кво да сѐ мо́лите бг҃ꙋ | Did He not tell you to uphold the Law, to believe in the name of the Christ, and to pray to God? |
28: | не ли́ ви бг҃ь ꙋплаши | Did God not make you fear? |
29: | не ли́ ви помо́гнꙋ вь нꙋ́жно вре́ме | Did He not help you in the time of need? |
30: | не лѝ мло́го добро̀ сотворѝ вáмь бг҃ь | Did God not make a lot of good for you? |
31: | не лѝ распе́тїе претрьте рáди ва͒ | Did He not suffer the crucifixion because of you? |
32: | ҆и паки гре́шници ни́какь не покáют сѐ | And, again, the sinners repent in no way. |
33: | тако́ й вась ꙋчить врáгь да тво́рите не́го́ва во́лꙗ | Thus the Enemy, too, teaches you to do his bidding. |
34: | ҆и речеть вáмь | And he says to you: |
35: | не бо́йте се, | ʺHave no fear!ʺ |
36: | мл͒ти́вь ҆есть бг҃ь | ʺGod is merciful!ʺ |
37: | не ви́дите лѝ земльни сꙋдни́ци що тво́рꙋть | Don't you see, what the earthly judges do? |
38: | кои чл҃ве(и)ци прихо́дꙋть при ни́хь | Those people, who come to them, |
тà ймь творꙋть добро ҆и волю ймь чи́нꙋть | and do good to them, and do their will, | |
҆и ѡни ги м҆илꙋ́ють | they (the judges) give them mercy. | |
39: | ҆и почитат͛ ги | And they respect them. |
40: | ҆и радꙋють йм се | And they are happy for them. |
41: | ҆á който творꙋть зло̀ мꙋчат͛ ги | But they torture those, who do evil. |
42: | ҆и бию,т͛ ги | And they beat them. |
43: | помисле́те | Think! |
44: | не хочет͛ ли ҆и бг҃ь такви́ва лю́дие сꙋди́ти | Will not God, too, judge such people? |
45: | ҆и паки не ѡставлꙗ́т͛ се зли ѿ зло | And, again, the evil do not cease to (do) evil. |
46: | ҆и на васáки де́нь творꙋть гре́хь | And they do sins every day. |
47: | тако́ и намь казꙋва ст҃ое писанїе | And thus says the Holy Scripture to us, too. |
48: | защо́ ҆има на гре́шни лꙋге мꙋче́нїе те́шко | For there is (indeed) hard toment for sinful people. |
49: | ҆ѡ христи҆ꙗ́ни помисле́те ҆и сáми | Think by yourself, o Christians! |
50: | какво да не́ ма на гре́шнѝ мч҃нїе | How could there be no torment for the sinful ones? |
51: | защо́ би тол͛кова стрáшень потопь ва вре́ме прáведнаго ҆иѡва | Why there was such a terrible flood in the time of righteous Job? |
52: | ко́й пꙋщи ѿ нб҃са ҆ѡ́гнь | Who sent the fire from the heavens? |
53: | ҆и пого́ри сáдома ҆и гомо́ра | And he burnt the Sodom and Gomorrah? |
54: | се́дмь грáдове погоре́хꙋ | Seven cities were burned down. |
55: | ҆и злѝ; зле погибнáхꙋ безако́ни мꙋжелож͛ци | And the evil ones, the lawless homosexuals, perished. |
56: | ҆и ҆ѡще ҆и место́ то сто́й ҆и до дне́сь ҆и смрьди где́ сꙋ живе́ли ҆о́ниа безако́ници | And the place, where those lawless ones had lived, is still standing (?) until today and stinks. |
57: | ко́й потопи гор͛деливаго фарáѡˇна ꙋ чер͛но мо́ре | Who drowned the haughty Pharaoh in the Black Sea? |
58: | ко̀й погꙋбѝ ꙋ пꙋстиню шесь сто́тинь лю́дие ҆евре́иски | Who killed six hundred Hebrews in the desert? |
59: | кой ҆изгорѝ собори́ще ҆евре́йско | Who burned down the Hebrew temple? |
60: | ко҆и ре́че зе́мли да ѿво́ри ꙋста сво́й да погль́не сед͛мь хилꙗди лю́дие жи́ви ꙋ цр҃ь дв҃дово вре́ме | Who told the earth to open its mouth, to swallow seven thousand people alive in the times of King David? |
61: | ко́й погꙋби ҆ѡсмь десеть ҆и петь хи́лꙗди лю́дие ҆аси́р҆ꙗ́не вь вре́ме пророка ҆исáиꙗ | Who killed eighty five thousand people of Assyria in the time of Prophet Isaiah? |
62: | не ли вѝди́ме(и) | Don't we see? |
63: | на васáки де́нь пꙋща бг҃ь на нáсь, зло | Every day, God sends evils on us, |
҆и глáдове(и) те́шки ҆и мори́ꙗ ѕла беззре́дна ҆и бездь́ждие сꙋ́ша ҆и разми́рици; ҆и гоне́нїе ҆и пле́нь | and hard famines, and evil seas (?) | |
64: | товá е све рáди нáше безꙋ́мие | All this is (happening) because of our mindlessness. |
65: | защо̀ не верꙋемо що казꙋва нам ст҃ое писанїе | Because we don't believe, what the Holy Scripture is telling us. |
66: | ҆á ко́й ве́рꙋва наказанїе божїе мло́го до́бро | But (he,) who believes in the divine punishment, |
хо́щеть нáйти ꙋ рàй бж҃їи | will find a lot of good in the Paradise of God, | |
҆и гради́ни ҆испль́нени сáсь хꙋбави цве́тове | and gardens filled with beautiful flowers. | |
67: | ҆и ст҃ьци тáмѡ веселат͛ се | And the saints rejoice there. |
68: | ҆и не изрече́ни пе́сни ꙋмиле́ни пею́ть | And they sing nice, unheard of songs. |
69: | ҆а ко́и не дрьжꙋть прáвдꙋ ҆и їстинꙋ хоче да бꙋде ҆ѡсꙋжде́нїе те́шко на ни́хь | But on those, who do not hold justice and truth, there will be a harsh judgement, |
҆и вьздиханїе ве́чна мꙋка гро́зна плáчь ҆и риданїе | and moaning, and terrible, eternal torment, crying and weeping. | |
70: | ҆и рекà ҆ѡгне́на тече́ть | And a fiery river flows (there). |
71: | ҆и ледь ҆и мрáзь; ҆и млого зло пригото́вено ҆есть тамѡ за гре́шни | And ice, and frost, and a lot of evil is prepared there for the sinful, |
ко́йто сагрешáють ҆и не покают се, | who are doing sins and are not (going to?) repent. | |
72: | какво ре́че нáмь хр͒тось | As the Christ told us: |
73: | ко́й грàби чꙋ́ждо све́жете мꙋ рꙋ́це ҆и нозе, | ʺBind the hands and legs [of the one, who steals from another one]!ʺ |
74: | ҆и фрьле́те го ꙋ тмꙋ кроме́шнꙋю | ʺAnd throw him into the outer darkness!ʺ |
75: | ҆áко ли бꙋдеш ҆ѡб҆ꙗ́дникь ҆и пи҆ꙗ́ница | If you would be a glutton and a drinker, |
҆á ти послꙋшáи какво рекохꙋ богати те члвеци ҆áврамꙋ щото бе́хꙋ ꙋ мꙋ́ка та | then listen, what the rich people, who were in the Torment, said to Abraham: | |
76: | ҆áврáме допратѝ лáзара да мѝ ҆истꙋдить ҆ꙗ́зикь [с мало водꙋ] | ʺO Abraham, send Lazarus to cool my tongue with a bit of water!ʺ |
77: | защо, ҆изгорех͛мо ѿ не гаси́маго ҆о́гнꙗ | ʺBecause we were burned by the inextinguishable fire.ʺ |
78: | тако ꙋмиле́но гово́рехꙋ | So nicely did they speak! |
79: | ҆áли не́ ма ко̀й да ги чꙋе дá ймь принесет во̀дꙋ, | But there is no one, who would hear them, to bring them water. |
80: | такáва е зла вечна мꙋка смрáдна темни́ца | So evil is the Eternal Torment, the stinking dungeon. |
81: | ꙋ не́ꙗ ҆о́гнь гори | The fire burns in it. |
82: | ҆á не ст҃и ѿ тмà ҆и мрáкь | And it does not shine because of darkness and clouds. |
83: | ҆единь дрꙋ́гаго не́ видит | One cannot see another one. |
84: | ҆и мло́го тꙋгà ҆и мꙋченїе ҆има тáмо | And there is a lot of sorrow and torment. |
85: | защо̀ ҆и до днешни́ день ҆о́гнь горѝ тамо | Because the fire burns there even until today. |
86: | та затовá го нарекохꙋ не гаси́ми ҆о́гнь | And thus they called it indistinguishable fire. |
87: | ҆и ни ҆едно мꙋченїе не́ ма по стрáшно ҆и по тешко ѿ ҆áдово мч҃нїе | And there is no (lit. not a single) torture more terrible and more harsh than the torture of Hades. |
88: | коги ꙋлезне неко́й члвекь некогѝ ꙋ темницꙋ | When a man once comes into a dungeon, |
҆и ви́ди тáмо хӑйдꙋци ҆и крьвни́ци ҆ѡсꙋжде́ни́ на самрь́ть ҆и ꙋ жи́ле́за ҆ѡко́вани на ши́ю ҆и на рꙋце ҆и на но́зе | he sees there robbers and murderers, convicted to death and shackled in iron on the back, and on the hands, and on the legs, | |
҆á дрꙋги ꙋ тꙋмрꙋ́ци тꙋ́рени ꙋ темно ҆и ꙋ смрáдно ме́сто затво́рени | and others put into wooden shackles, incarcerated in dark and stinking places. | |
89: | не ли́ сꙋ стрáшни т҆иꙗ ме́ста | Are those places not terrible? |
90: | ҆á коги поведꙋть нáсь тáмо ꙋ ве́чнꙋ мꙋкꙋ да ни затво́рꙋть | And when they take us there, to lock is in the Eternal Torment |
какво̀ хо́чемо тоги́ва; твори́ти | what shall we then do? | |
91: | ѡͯ гор͛ко нáмь | O, (it will be) bitter for us! |
92: | тоги́ва ҆и които хо́чать нáсь да во́дꙋть ꙋ мꙋка та не сꙋ като нáсь не́мощни чл҃ве́ци | Then (it will be seen that those?), who will bring us into the Torment, are not like us, weak humans. |
93: | нь сꙋ ҆áн҃гли си́л͛ни ҆и стрáшни ҆и вели́ки | But they are angels, strong, and terrible, and great. |
94: | ҆и млого срьд͛бꙋ хо́щꙋть да ймать на нáсь; | And they will be very angry with us. |

96: | ► защо мло́го нїе ҆ѡскрь́бих͛мо гд͒а бг҃а нашего; ҆ı́ис͒а хр͒та | Because we made our Lord God sad, Jesus Christ. |
97: | ҆и ст҃ое кр҃щенїе гд͒не ҆ѡмрьси́хмо | And we tainted the holy baptism of Lord. |
98: | ҆и цр҃ки господни погазих͛мо | And we stomped royal churches. |
99: | ҆и прáзници хр͒тови не дрьжи́мо | And we do not uphold the feasts of the Christ. |
100: | ҆и сш҃теници цр҃ков͛ници не почи́тамо | And we respect not the priests (and) clerics. |
101: | ҆и рꙋгаемо на нихь | And we blaspheme against them. |
102: | ҆и ѱꙋвамо сш҃тени́ци | And we curse the priests. |
103: | ҆á сш҃тени́кь се нарича ҆áп͒ль хр͒то́вь | But the priest is called an apostle of Christ. |
104: | ҆á ви́е ҆ѡ не смислени чл҃ве́ци не ꙋплаших͛те се ни́ ѿ наꙋка ни ѿ сꙋдь мо́й | But you, o mindless humans, did not have fear because of teaching, nor because of my (?) judgement, |
҆ни ѿ сꙋшꙋ ни ѿ глáдь ни ѿ по́морь | not because of drought, nor famine, nor pestilence, | |
ни ѿ те́шки сне́гове ни ѿ злѝ зими нѝ, ле́те ѿ же́гꙋ | nor heavy snows, nor bad winters, nor heat in summer, | |
ни ѿ бездь́ждие ни ѿ гром ни́ ѿ тре́сакь нѝ ѿ мльнїе страшно | nor rainless periods, nor thunder, nor quake, nor terrible thunderstorms, | |
нї ѿ войскꙋ ни ѿ роб͛ство ни́ ѿ пле́нь агарен͛ски | nor wars, nor servitude, nor captivity (under) Hagarenes, | |
ни ѿ ҆огнь не гаси́ми | nor from the inextinguishable fire. | |
105: | но тькмо що ҆ꙋчить вась врáгь него́вꙋ во́лю тво́рите | You just do the will of the Enemy, as he teaches you. |
106: | ҆и врагꙋ сте се предáли | And you have given yourself to the Enemy, |
да ви́ заве́де ꙋ мꙋкꙋ вечнꙋю | so that he brings you into the Eternal Torment, | |
да се мꙋчите до́ века | so that you will be tortured forever. | |
107: | ҆и ҆ѡще кáкво ре́че нáмь гд͒ь бг҃ь їис҃ь хр͒тось | And what also says the Lord God, Jesus Christ: |
108: | волю мо́ю творе́те | ʺDo my will!ʺ |
109: | ꙋ̂ цр҃кви мо́й ходе́те непрестáно | ʺGo to my churches without ceasing!ʺ |
110: | празници да дрьжите | ʺUphold my feasts!ʺ |
111: | ҆и сш҃теници мо́й почитáйте | ʺRespect my priests!ʺ |
112: | ҆и не хꙋле́те ги | ʺDo not slander them!ʺ |
113: | ҆и законь мо́й не поразꙋ́ите | ʺAnd do not break my Law!ʺ |
114: | ҆и верꙋ, мою не ꙋничижáйте | ʺAnd do not destroy my faith!ʺ |
115: | ї ҆ꙗ́ вáсь да помилꙋвамь | ʺAnd may I give you mercy.ʺ |
116: | да вѝ даде́мь пло́дь зе́мльни | ʺMy I give you fruit of the land.ʺ |
117: | ҆и да ви даде́мь дь́жь блáгь вь време свое | ʺAnd may I give you good rain in its time.ʺ |
118: | ҆и да ꙋкротимь цр҃ие земльни; да вѝ не гонꙋть ези́чници проклети ҆агаре́не | ʺAnd may I make the kings of the Earth humble, so that the accursed heathens, the Hagarenes, will not persecute you.ʺ |
119: | ҆и да ви ҆избавимь ѿ ве́чнꙋю, мꙋкꙋ диавол͛скꙋ | ʺAnd may I free you from the Eternal Torment of the Devil.ʺ |
120: | да ви заведе́мь ꙋ рáй; мо́й гдето е непрестáно радость и веселїе | ʺAnd may I lead you into my Paradise, where is an endless happiness and joy.ʺ |
121: | какво̀ пею́ть ҆áнг҃ели ꙋмиле́но тáмо | How nicely angels sing there! |
122: | какво̀ се весе́лꙋть праведници тáмо | How are the righteous ones feasting there! |
123: | какво цве́ти́е хꙋбаво меризливо ҆има тамо | How (much?) flowers are there, nice (and) well-smelling. |
124: | каквà хꙋбось ҆и красотà ҆има тамо каквото никоги паметь чл҃вечески не мо́же домисли́ти | How much beauty and nicety, as no human mind can think of, is there! |
125: | тамо е не йзречена бл҃годáть бж҃їа пригото̀вена за прáви люди́е | There is an unspoken of blessing of God prepared for the just people, |
ко́йто сꙋ твори́ли во́лю бж҃їю | who were doing will of God. | |
126: | ҆и нико̀ги не ще бг҃ь ѡсꙋди́ти прáведнаго чл҃века | And God will (wants to?) never condemn a righteous man. |
127: | тькмо ко́йто сꙋ бо́гꙋ прегреши́ли ҆и зло, сотвори ҆и не сꙋ се пока҆ꙗ́ли | (He will condemn) only (those), who had sinned against God, and did evil, and did not repent. |
128: | на такви́ва чл҃ве́ци рáсте ҆ѡсꙋжде́нїе тешкѡ като плáмень ҆ѡгне́ни | On such people, a harsh judgement grows as the flame of fire. |
129: | ѡͯ гор͛ко ҆имь ѡка҆ꙗни | O, (it will be) bitter for them, the wretched ones! |
130: | ҆ѡ хр͒те, ҆ис҃е | O Christ, Jesus! |
