 | Бл҃горо́дни ҆и досто̀по́чете́ни ҆и хри́сто̀люби́ви хр͒тиӑни брáтйи мо́й возлюбле́ни послꙋ́шайте за дне́ши дн҃ь | O noble, and respect-worthy, and Christ-loving Christians, my dear brothers, listen (to the homily) for this day! |
Let us tell you, so that you understand, how our Lord Jesus Christ was born. |
The Lord said to Archangel Gabriel: |
Go, o angel, (and) tell the handsome Joseph to go the city of Nazareth for Virgin Mary!ʺ |
I gave the command to him to take her.ʺ |
And Virgin Mary will be called the Bride of Joseph.ʺ |
Thus God commanded. |
And some days passed. |
And Joseph went away. |
And he saw Virgin Mary. |
And as he watched her, it came to his mind, that Mary is still a young child. |
And Joseph was a prudent, and just, and a God-fearing man. |
So he did not want to tell anybody that God had sent him to take Virgin Mary for a wife. |
But he thought to leave her. |
And thus he thought in that night. |
And Gabriel, the angel of God, appeared to him. |
O Joseph, son of David, may you have no fear from anything.ʺ |
Just take your wife Mary by the hand!ʺ |
And protect her!ʺ |
And that, what Mary has in her bosom, she had conceived by Holy Spirit.ʺ |
And she will give a birth to a son.ʺ |
And you give him the name Jesus!ʺ |
Because he will save all the human race from sin.ʺ |
And when Joseph woke up, he thought. |
And he did, as the angel said to him. |
 | ҆и вь ҆о́но́ва вре́ме ҆излезе повеленїе ѿ цр҃а ҆áвгꙋстà да сѐ подпи́с-ва све́ки чл҃ве́кь по́дь цр҃евꙋ рꙋкꙋ | And in that time, a command came from Emperor Augustus, for every man under the Emperor's hand, to subscribe, |
҆и да знáе цр҃ь ко́й кáквь е члвекь ҆и све́ки да е запи́сань ꙋ цр҃ска кни́га | and so that the Emperor knows, what kind of man everyone is, everyone to be written in the imperial accounts.
And (it was done so?) because the Emperor understood, that a great king was going to be born from Virgin Mary. |
Thus the Emperor feared, that he would take over his domain. |
And that is why he wanted to write down all the people in his accounts, |
҆и да знае комꙋ̀ какво́ е ҆имѐ | and to know, how is everyone called.
And it was, then, Joseph's turn to subscribe himself. |
And he wrote himself. |
Joseph was from the house of King David. |
And as they were writing themselves, the time had come for Virgin Mary to give birth. |
And God sent an angel. |
And he said: |
O Joseph, go (and) take your wife, Mary!ʺ |
And flee to Bethlehem!ʺ |
And he took her by the hand. |
And he ran far away, so that he will not be found. |
And they entered a cave. |
And there, the Most Pure Mother of God gave birth to our Lord Jesus Christ. |
 | ҆и като̀ чꙋеше ст҃аꙗ бдца такви́ва дꙋ́ми ѿ цр҃а ҆ѡнà се боеше за хр͒та си́на сво́его̀ | And as the holy Mother of God heard such words (?) from the Emperor (?), she feared for the Christ, her son. |
And she wrapped him in diapers. |
And she put him into a cradle. |
And thus she hid him. |
Because there was a wide place in the cave. |
And so travellers were coming. |
And thus a cradle was made. |
And thus they were binding on (it) horses, or oxen, or mules, or whatever (they had). |
And there the holy Mother of God hid the Christ in the cradle in front of the oxen. |
And shepherds were there, close to that cave. |
And they were whistling on their flock. |
And one of the shepherds saw the great light in the cave. |
And he became afraid. |
An angel of God came to them. |
And he said to them: |
Have no fear!ʺ |
 | дꙋ́мамь вáмь | ʺI say to you:ʺ |
There will be great joy here.ʺ |
Go to the cave!ʺ |
And you will find there the holy Mother of God.ʺ |
And you will see, how she wraps the Christ, her son, in diapers.ʺ |
And you (will?) hear, how the angels sing there:ʺ |
Glory (be) to God in the highest!ʺ |
And peace (be) on the Earth!ʺ |
Good will (be) in the people!ʺ |
And as the shepherds heard the voice, they went there, into that cave. |
And they found, what the angel said to them. |
And in the days of King Herod, other, three kings came to him, mages (lit. wise ones) from the East. |
They came to Jerusalem. |
 | ҆и питáхꙋ | And they asked: |
Where will be born the King of Jews?ʺ |
Because we saw a star in the East.ʺ |
And we want to go to him, to pay respect to him.ʺ |
As King Herod heard that word, he became afraid. |
And he called for leading people - bishops, and learned men, and priests. |
And he asked them, where the Scripture writes, that the Christ-King will be born. |
And they said to him: |
Prophet Micah said:ʺ |
The Christ will be born in Bethlehem.ʺ |
Then King Herod secretly summoned those three mage-kings. |
And he said to them: |
 | ҆идете | ʺGo!ʺ |
And ask, where the Christ has been born,ʺ |
и ни́ꙗ да ҆иде́мо при не́го да мꙋ се покло́нимо | ʺso that we, too, go to him, to pay respect.ʺ
And when you find home, come (back)!ʺ |
And tell me, so that I, too, go to pay respect to him!ʺ |
Thus spoke the heathen-mannered Herod. |
He was not going to pay respect to him. |
But he thought about releasing evil evil-thinkers to kill the Christ. |
For he feared, that he (could) take his kingdom, to rule. |
Then those three wise kings left Jerusalem. |
And they went, where the star stood in Bethlehem over the child in the cave. |
And they found, where the Christ was born. |
Then those kings opened their stashes. |
Then, those three kings took out gifts to grant them to the Christ. |
One king gave gold to the holy Mother of God. |
And another gave thyme. |
 | ҆á трети ҆измир͛нꙋ | And the third (gave) myrrh. |
An angel of God said to the kings: |
Do not go to King Herod!ʺ |
But go by your own way!ʺ |
And they returned by another way. |
And they went away to their own country. |
And they praised the name of the Christ all over the Earth. |
Then, from where did those wise kings understand, that the Christ was going to be born? |
There was no sign (for them). |
But still, God Himself showed (a sign). |
He made the star appear, which we call Morning Star. |
It began to shine. |
And those wise men understood, that a king of all the world will be born. |
(And) why does not the star shine now, in our evil days, |
като през͛ь ҆ѡнїѧ години коги бе́ше берике́ть на зе́млю | as during those years, when there was abundance on the Earth?
Because even it became dark because of our evil mindlessness! |
O (it is) evil and hard and bitter for us, the miserable ones! |
And those wise unbelievers followed that star. |
And they found the Christ in the cave. |
Because the angel of God showed them two years earlier. |
And the angel appeared in front of (their) eyes as a star. |
Afterwards, King Herod rose up with a great army. |
And he went to the city of Bethlehen, and to Galilee, and to Nazareth, |
да трáжи хр͒та да го̀ погꙋ́би | to search for the Christ, to kill him,
да не преꙋзме негово цр͒тво да цр҃ꙋва хр͒то́сь нáди цр҃а ҆ирода | so that he would not take his kingdom, to rule over King herod.
He searched, |
 | ҆и питà за хр͒тан҆и | and he asked for Christians (?) |
As he could not find him (?), |
нело мꙋ доне́се врáгь зло̀ на пáметь | the Enemy brought evil to his mind.
And he slaughtered fourteen thousand small children up to (?) two years (of age), |
дано́ би нашль ҆и хр͒та да го погꙋ́би | so that he would find the Christ, to kill him too.
And he could not find him to kill him. |
When the time came, he gave himself over to the hands of the Jews, |
да го мꙋчꙋть зарадѝ родь хр͒тиан͛ски да ни ҆избáви ѿ ве́чное мꙋче́нїе | to torture him for the Christian kin, to save them from Eternal Torment.
And glory (be) to this Christ, our God, |
҆и чт͒ь ҆и поклоненїе | and honor and respect,
҆о́ц҃ꙋ: ҆и си́нꙋ ҆и ст҃о́мꙋ дх҃ꙋ | to Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit,
нинѣ ҆и при́сно ҆и во век | now and ever, and forever! |
