2: | Єдно вре́ме ҆имаше ҆едно̀ млáдо: мом͛че | Once there was a young boy |
3: | ҆и сиромахь беше | And he was poor |
4: | ҆и пасе́ше гꙋс͛ки | And he was grazing geese |
5: | ꙋ грáда то́го гдето̀ ҆о́но́й, мом͛че седе́ше ҆и на вратá та град͛ски пи́сань ҆о́брáзь їѡáна бг҃ослова хꙋ́бавь ҆оꙋ́стро҆ень | And in the town where that boy was sitting, on the town doors an image of John the Evangelist was painted, beautiful and well constructed |
6: | ҆á ѡнои мом͛че стáне зáрань | And that boy gets up in the morning |
7: | та подбе́ре гꙋ́ски те | so he collects the geese |
8: | ҆и минꙋва по краи врáта та градски | And he walks by the town's doors |
9: | ҆и призира на обрáзь ст҃аго їѡ҆анà | And he looks at the image of St. John |
10: | ҆и пи́ше сáсь прьсь на пе́сакь | And he writes with his finger on the sand |
11: | ҆и дꙋмаше | And he was saying |
12: | гд͒и дáй ми да се наꙋ́чимь да препи́шемь то҆ꙗ́ ҆о́брáзь | ʺLord, allow me to learn how to copy that imageʺ |
13: | жáли ми дш҃а та да би се изь҆ꙋчи́ль | ʺMy soul desires that I would be able to learnʺ |
14: | ҆и беше си тꙋри́ло ҅он҅ои мом͛че ми́саль ҆и паметь ҆и ҆очи тамо ꙋ ҆ѡбрáзь ст҃омꙋ | And that boy had put his thought and mind and eyes there on the image of the saint |
15: | ҆и три го́динь све пи́шеше | And three years he was always drawing |
16: | ҆и не престá҆ꙗ́ше | And he was not stopping |
17: | ҆и като пи́шеше сась прь́сь по пес͛кь | And as he was drawing with his finger on the sand |
҆и прїиде ст҃и ҆и҅ѡань бг҃ословь ҆очи́весно при негѡ | St. John the Evangelist came to him clearly | |
18: | [и] ре́че мꙋ | And he said to him: |
19: | що прáвишь товà гꙋсарꙋ | ʺWhy are you doing this, o Gusar?ʺ |
20: | сась прьсти по пе́с͛кь пи́шешь | ʺYou are writing with fingers on the sandʺ |
21: | ҆и гꙋсарь ре́че ҆иѡанꙋ | And Gusar said to John: |
22: | ҆иди | ʺGoʺ |
23: | возри на врáта грáдꙋ | ʺLook at the town's doorsʺ |
24: | ҆и вишь ҆о́бразь иѡанꙋ бг҃осло́вꙋ | ʺAnd see the the image of John the Evangelistʺ |
25: | ҆и него тре́то ле́то ꙋчим͛ се | ʺI am learning it for the third yearʺ |
26: | ҆и пишем по пе́скꙋ | ʺAnd I draw on the sandʺ |
27: | ҆и рече мꙋ ст҃и ҆и҅ѡань | And St. John said to him: |
28: | ҆á хо́чешь ли ҆ико́ни да сѐ ꙋчишь да пи́шешь | ʺDo you want to learn to draw icons?ʺ |
29: | ре́че ҆емꙋ гꙋсáрь | Gusar said to him: |
30: | сáка ми срдце да сѐ наꙋчимь | ʺMy heart wants me to learnʺ |
31: | тоги́ва їѡ҆ань ꙋзе перо̀ ҆и мастѝло | Then John took a feather and ink |
32: | ҆и написà кни́гꙋ послàницꙋ | And he wrote a letter of recommendation (?) |
33: | ҆и писà ꙋ кни́гꙋ | And in the letter he wrote: |
34: | ҆áзь ҆иѡ́ань бг҃ословь пратихь товà де́тище те́бе мáстерꙋ хинáрꙋ .:. | ʺI, John the Evangelist, sent this child to you, master Chēnarios.ʺ |
35: | на де́тище ҆име гꙋсáрь | ʺThe name of the child is Gusarʺ |
36: | да го̀ ҆изьꙋчи́шь да пи́ше ҆ико́ни | ʺMay you teach him how to draw iconsʺ |
37: | ҆и запечатѝ кни́гꙋ сась печáть | And he sealed the book with a stamp |
38: | ҆и даде ю гꙋсáрꙋ | And he gave it to Gusar |
39: | ҆и рече мꙋ | And he said to him |
40: | ҆иди ꙋ цр҃игрáдь | ʺGo to Constantinopleʺ |
41: | ҆има тáмѡ цр҃евь писе́ць | ʺThere is a king's painterʺ |
42: | ҆име мꙋ е хинáрь | ʺHis name is Chēnariosʺ |
43: | то́й ꙋ злати дворо́ве цр҃еви пи́шеть | ʺHe paints in the golden courts of the kingʺ |
44: | ҆и дáй мꙋ послáницꙋ | ʺGive him the messageʺ |
45: | и речѝ | ʺAnd say:ʺ |
46: | дáде ми ю ҆и҆ѡань бг͒ло́вь | ʺJohn the Evangelist gave it to meʺ |
47: | ҆и по не́го ҆иди | ʺAnd go after himʺ |
48: | товà ҆изре́че ӥѡ҅ань | John said this |
49: | ҆и ни́кои го не виде кадѐ ҆ѡтидѐ | And no one saw where he went |
50: | ҆á гꙋсарь ско́ро ҆ѡтидѐ ꙋ грáдь | And Gusar soon went to the city |
51: | ҆и наидѐ хинáра цр҃еваго пис͛цà | And he found Chēnarios, the king's painter |
52: | ҆и даде мꙋ кни́гꙋ | And he gave him the letter |
53: | ҆и ѡтиде по не́го | And he went after him |
54: | ҆и писе́ць проче́те кни́га та | And the painter read the letter |
55: | ҆и подиви́ се какво̀ беше пи́сано | And he wondered at what was written |
56: | гꙋсáрь казà све какво̀ е писáль сáсь прь́сти по пес͛кь | Gusar told about everything he had drawn with fingers on the sand |
57: | ҆и ҆ѡбиде зави́сть срдце пис͛цꙋ какво да го не́ изь҆ꙋчѝ | And jealousy filled the heart of the painter (so much), that he was not going to teach him. |
58: | ҆á еди́нь цр҃евь чл҃векь ре́че х҆инáрꙋ | And one king's man said to Chēnarios: |
59: | напи́шете́ ми ҆иконꙋ во ҆о́бразь ст҃áго и҆ѡана бг҃осло́ва | ʺDraw for me an icon in the image of St. John the Evangelistʺ |
60: | ҆ꙋ́зе мá҅исторь хинáрь потре́бїю бою̀ | Master Chēnarios took paint |
61: | ҆и даде ю гꙋсáрꙋ | And gave it to Gusar |
62: | ҆и рече мꙋ | And he said to him: |
63: | трькáи бою | ʺRub the paintʺ |
64: | при́готви ю | ʺPrepare itʺ |
65: | ҆и по бж҃їю повеле́нїю ꙋгладѝ гꙋсáрь ҆ѡновà ме́сто до ҆ѡбе́дь | And by the God's will Gusar evened out that place until noon |
66: | ҆и прїиде при не́го їѡ́ань бг҃осло́вь | And John the Evangelist went to him |
67: | ҆и ре́че мꙋ | And he said to him: |
68: | що прáвишь товà гꙋсáрꙋ | ʺWhy are you doing this, o Gusar?ʺ |
69: | ре́че гꙋсáрь | Gusar said: |
70: | пригладꙋ́вамь ме́сто да пишеме ҆иконꙋ ї҆ѡана бг҃осло́ва мастерꙋ мо́҅емꙋ | ʺI am evening the place to draw an icon of John the Evangelist for my masterʺ |
71: | ҆и рече́ мꙋ ҅иѡ́ӑнꙋ | And John said to him: |
72: | стáни | ʺGet up!ʺ |
73: | пишѝ | ʺDraw!ʺ |
74: | ҆и ꙋзе перо̀ | And he took a feather |
75: | ҆и написá ҆о́брáзь на д͛скꙋ | And he drew an image on the board |
76: | ҆изиде светло́сть | Light came out |
77: | ҆и просвети́ се дво́рь ѿ иконꙋ като̀ ѿ сл҃нце | And the court lightened up from the icon like from the sun |
78: | ҆á гꙋсарь фáнꙋ да плáче | And Gusar began to cry |
79: | ҆и мислеше | And he was thinking: |
80: | що ще да ми́ бꙋде ѿ маистора | ʺWhat will master think of me?ʺ |
81: | ҆и прїиде мáйсторь | And the master came |
82: | ҆и онь почѐ да сѐ чꙋ́ди какво́ би това не доми́слено чꙋдѡ | And he began wondering what this not thought out .......... was |
83: | ҆и казахꙋ цр҃ꙋ | And they told the king |
84: | ҆и рекохꙋ | And they said: |
85: | ҆има ҆ꙋ твое́го пи́сцà ꙋченикь тре́ти де́нь какво́ е доше́ль да се ꙋчи | ʺIn your court there is a painter, a student for the third day, who has come to learnʺ |
86: | ҆á вче́ра написáль ҆иѡана бг҃осло́ва ҆ико́нꙋ | ʺAnd yesterday he drew an icon for John the Evangelistʺ |
87: | ҆и дво́рь тво́й цр҃ꙋ светѝ ѿ неꙗ кáто̀ ѿ сл҃н͛це | ʺAnd your court shone from it like from the sunʺ |
88: | ҆и во ꙋмь чл҃векꙋ не прїйдеть | ʺAnd it cannot be comprehended by (lit. does not come to) a human mind (?)ʺ |
89: | ҆и ꙋзехꙋ ҆иконꙋ | And they took the icon |
90: | ҆и зане́соха ю при́ цр҃а | And they brought it to the king |
91: | ҆и като ю̀: видѐ цр҃ь ҆и него ҆ѡбидѐ стрáхь ѿ светло́сти ҆ико́ни | And when the king saw it, a fear of its brightness took over him |
92: | ҆и като̀ зáсрами се цр҃е́вь писе́ць ѿ цр҃еви настои́ници | And when the king's painter got ashamed in front of the king's officials, |
҆и ѡни́ си междꙋ̀ се́бе дꙋ́махꙋ | they were saying to each other: | |
93: | ҆ꙋчени́ко ҆ще да надпи́ше майстора | ʺThe student will outdraw the masterʺ |
94: | ҆á дрꙋги ре́кохꙋ | And others said: |
95: | майсторь ще да надпи́ше | ʺThe master will outdraw (him)ʺ |
96: | ҆а цр҃ь ре́че | And the king said: |
97: | ҆ꙗ право сꙋ́димь кои кого̀ ще дá надпи́ше | ʺI will rightly judge who will outdraw whomʺ |
98: | да напи́шете двà ҆ор͛лà ꙋ мо́й дворо́ве | ʺYou will draw two eagles in my courtsʺ |
99: | ҆единь пише́те на сте́нꙋ | ʺOne you draw on the wallʺ |
100: | ҆и дрꙋ́ги бли́зꙋ при не́го пáки на сте́нꙋ напи́ше́те | ʺAnd the other you draw close to it again on the wallʺ |
101: | ҆и ҆ꙗ́ да зе́мемь соко́ль мо́й да го пꙋ́щимь | ʺAnd I will take my falcon to let it goʺ |
102: | та ко́҆его ҆ор͛ла нáчне соко́ль | ʺAnd whose eagle my falcon begins (to chase),ʺ |
то҆ꙗ́ мáйсторь надпи́сꙋва | ʺthat master outdraws (the other)ʺ | |
103: | ҆и сви настоиници ре́кохꙋ | And all guardians said: |
104: | право рекль ҆есѝ цр҃ꙋ | ʺYou have said it rightly, kingʺ |
105: | ҆и ѡтидо́хꙋ ско́ро | And soon they went |
106: | ҆и написáхꙋ два ҆о́рла | And they drew two eagles |
107: | ҆ед́инь писа ҆едного ҆орла | One drew the one eagle |
108: | ҆á дрꙋги писа дрꙋ́гаго | And the other one drew the other |
109: | ҆и гледахꙋ лꙋге мáйсторе ва писанїѧ | And people were looking at the masters' drawings |
110: | ҆и дꙋ́махꙋ | And they were saying |
111: | не ма ꙋ то́ꙗ ст҃ь такво́во | ʺThere is no such thig in this world!ʺ |
112: | ҆и погледвахꙋ гꙋсáрово писанїе | And they were looking at the Gusar's drawing |
113: | ҆и ꙋмь ҆имь зано́сеше ѿ хꙋбо́сть чи́сто ҆и чт͒но | And their mind was overcame purely and truly by the beauty |
114: | ҆á цр҃ь ꙋзе соко́ль | And the king took the falcon |
115: | ҆и пꙋщи го | And he let it go |
116: | ҆и соколь фáнꙋ гꙋсáровꙋ пти́цꙋ на сте́не | And the falcon caught the Gusar's bird on the wall |
117: | ҆и ѿ тоги́ва ꙋзе цр҃ь гꙋсáра при се́бе | And from then on the king took Gusar with him, |
да мꙋ̀ пи́ше хꙋбост по дворо́ве | so he paints beauty in his courts | |
118: | ҆и гꙋсáрово писáнїе ҆излезе по хꙋбаво ѿ мáйстора мꙋ хинáра | And the Gusar's drawing came out more beautiful that that of his master Chēnarios |
119: | знáйте ҆и разꙋмейте хр͒тиáне какво ти́а двѐ пти́ци ҆и до дне́шни де́нь сто́ють ꙋ цр҃ви дво́рове напи́сани на с́тенꙋ | Know and understand, o Christians, that those two birds still stand drawn in the king's courts |
120: | ҆á ико́нꙋ що бе́ше писал гꙋсáрь ҆и҅ѡана бг҃осло́ва ꙋнесоха ю ꙋ цр͛ьквꙋ | And the icon of John the Evangelist that Gusar had drawn, they took to the church |
121: | ҆и празноваша са рáдостїю | And they celebrated with joy |
122: | ҆ѡ хр͒те ии͒се гд͒е нáшемь | Of Jesus Christ, our Lord |
123: | ҆емꙋ же слáва ҆и нинѣ ҆и при́сно и во ве́ки веко́вь васе́гда | Glory to him now and ever and forever! |

125: | Ѡ ди́вно ҆и преслáвное чꙋдо брáте | O brother, (behold) the miraculous and most famous miracle! |
126: | ѡ͒ не изрече́на ҆и не доми́слена дела ҆и чꙋде͒а бж҃їа | O, (behold) unspoken and unthought of works and miracles of God! |
