҆и проще́нїю: би́в͛шꙋ покаѧнїемь ҆ѡ блꙋде: ♣ | [Title] and (about how he was) forgiv(en) by the repentance about the sin | |
2: | Попь не́кои ҆имаше ꙋ костан͛динов грáдь | There was a priest in the city of Constantinople |
3: | ҆и надви мꙋ дӥаволь | And the Devil defeated him |
4: | та ҆ѡтидѐ | So he went away |
5: | та ꙋпáде ҆оꙋ́ кꙋр͛вар͛ство | And he fell into adultery |
6: | ҆и по некол͛ко дни́ по́мисли за своѐ согреше́нїе | And for some days he thought about his sin |
7: | ҆и плáчеше потáйно | And he was secretly crying |
8: | ҆и дꙋ́маше | And he was saying: |
9: | ꙋвѝ ме́не сиромáхꙋ какво́ си ꙋмрь́сихь дш҃ꙋ ҆и тело̀ | ʺWoe to me, the poor one, how I tainted my soul and my body!ʺ |
10: | какво щем сега да сѐ сто́римь | ʺWhat am I going to do now?ʺ |
11: | и да [помолим] проще́нїе грехо́вь мо́ймь | ʺHow am I going to ask for forgiveness of my sins?ʺ |
12: | ҆и станꙋ | And he got up |
13: | ҆и ѿидѐ на едно место високо ꙋ еднꙋ го́рꙋ | And he went to a high place in a mountain |
14: | тáмо ҆имаше мн͒трь ҆и дх҃о́вници | There was a monastery and some clerics |
15: | ҆и ѿидѐ презви́терь тамо да се покаѐ при некое́го дꙋхо́внаго ҆о́ц҃а | And the presbyter went there to repent in front of some spiritual father |
16: | ҆и нáйде тáмо стар͛ца | And there he found an old man |
17: | ҆и ҆испо́веда попꙋ всѧ со́греше́нїѧ | And he confessed his sin to the priest |
18: | ҆и по това казà ҆и кꙋр͛вар͛ство согреше́нїе | And after that he told about the sin of adultery |
19: | ҆и ре́че мꙋ стáрець | And the old man said to him: |
20: | ѡͯ презви́тере те́жекь гре́хь ҆е́сть то́ꙗ | ʺOh presbyter, this sin is a heavy one!ʺ |
21: | не ꙋбоꙗ́ ли се да слꙋ́жишь ст҃ꙋю литꙋр͛ги́ю | ʺWere you not afraid to serve the holy liturgy?ʺ |
22: | ҆и рече по́пь | And the priest said: |
23: | ҆е҆и ҆о́ч҃е ст҃и слꙋжи́хь: | ʺHoly father, I served itʺ |
24: | ҆и ре́че стáрець | And the old man said: |
25: | лепо гле́даи чáдо | ʺLook closely (lit.: well), childʺ |
26: | когѝ ꙋпадне по́пь ꙋ такови гре́хь не има немꙋ проще́нїе | ʺWhen a priest falls into such sin, there is no forgiveness for himʺ |
27: | но да нѐ слꙋ́жи ве́че | ʺbut he will not serve any moreʺ |
28: | защо сáсь вели́ко пока҆ꙗнїе тре́бе да пристꙋ́пишь при бг҃а | ʺfor you must approach God with great repentanceʺ |
29: | ҆и ꙋ ере́йство паки да не прїйдеш | ʺand (you must) not go back to priesthood againʺ |
30: | н ет͒ь те́бе проще́нїе | ʺThere is no forgiveness for youʺ |
31: | ҆и попь ре́че | And the priest said: |
32: | не ймамь ли ҆о́ч҃е пока҅ѧнїе | ʺFather, do I not have repentence?ʺ |
33: | ҆á стáрець се сми́сли: | And the old man started thinking |
34: | ҆и ре́че | and he said: |
35: | прости́ ме чáдо гд͒а рáди | ʺForgive me, child, for Godʺ |
36: | каков смь ҆ꙗ́ тако́в | ʺWhat am Iʺ ʺSuchʺ |
37: | и грехь не ꙋбо҆ꙗх се да сꙋдим | ʺAnd I was not afraid to judge a sinʺ |
38: | токо да мо́жемь ҆áзь ѿ мо́й гре́хь да се покáемь | ʺOnly so I can repent for my own sinʺ |
39: | товà чꙋ їер҅еи | The priest heard this |
40: | ҆и поклони́ се старцꙋ | And he bowed to the old man |
41: | ҆и ѿидѐ скрь́бень | And he went away sorrowful |
42: | ҆и като́ си ѿтво́де́ше срешнá го ҆áв͛ва ҆и пе́трь | And as he was walking away, the Father and Peter met him |
43: | ҆и видо́ха го скрь́бень | And they saw him sorrowful |
44: | ҆и рече мꙋ пе́трь | And Peter said to him: |
45: | що ти е чáдо | ʺWhat is the matter with you, child?ʺ |
46: | ҆á по́пь рече | And the priest said: |
47: | чт͒ни ҆о́ч҃е прїидо́хь кь ономꙋ стар͛цꙋ | ʺHonorable father, I went to the old manʺ |
48: | ҆исповедáхь ве́сь мо́и грех | ʺI confessed all my sinʺ |
49: | ҆á онь ме ꙋ ѡча҆ꙗнїе в͛веде | ʺbut he brought me into despairʺ |
50: | ҆и ре́че ҆емꙋ пе́трь | And Peter said to him: |
51: | чꙋемь чáдо що дꙋ́машь | ʺI hear what you are saying, childʺ |
52: | доиди ҆ꙋ мою̀ келїю | ʺCome to my cellʺ |
53: | и ҆ꙗви ми ве́сь тво́й гре́хь | ʺand show me all your sinʺ |
54: | та вече какво̀ ще бг҃ь направи́ти | ʺand then whatever God doesʺ |
55: | ҆и ѿидѐ презви́терь ꙋ пе́тровꙋ келїю | And the presbyter went to Peter's cell |
56: | ҆испове́да кꙋр͛вар͛ство де́ло | And he confessed the deed of adultery |
57: | ҆á петрь ре́че | And Peter said: |
58: | по йстине рекль тї е ст҃и стáрець їере́ю | ʺThe holy old man told it to you truthfully, fatherʺ |
59: | то҆ꙗ гре́хь те́жекь ет͒ь | ʺThis sin is heavyʺ |
60: | ҆и не ҆имать проще́нїе тебе ере́ю | ʺAnd there is no forgiveness for you, fatherʺ |
61: | ѿ се́га не возможно тї е да слꙋ́жишь | ʺFrom now on it is impossible for you to serveʺ |
62: | токо да сѐ постриже́шь; на монáшески чи́нь | ʺonly to cut your hair for monasticismʺ |
63: | ҆и да се покáеш, ҆истино | ʺand to repent trulyʺ |
64: | ҆и ꙗ се наде́емь на бл҃годать | ʺAnd I hope for the grace of Lord Jesus Christ,ʺ |
гд͒а ıи҃са хр͒тá да сотво́ри мл͒ть сáсь те́бе като са сви́ те чл҃веци що се пока҆ꙗ́ть | ʺso that he gives (lit. does) mercy for you like for all people who repentʺ | |
66: | ҆онь като чꙋ та҆ꙗ дꙋ́ма ҆и паде | As he heard this word, he fell down |
67: | ҆и покло́ни се стар͛цꙋ | And he bowed to the old man |
68: | ҆и ре́че попь стар͛цꙋ | And the priest said to the old man: |
69: | ҆ѡче петре коги́ ме бг҃ь при́веде въ ст҃ıѧ твоѧ̀ рꙋки не ще́мь да се ѿлꙋчимь ѿ те́бе | ʺFather Peter, ever since God led me into your holy hands, I do not want to separate myself from you!ʺ |
70: | ҆и постри́же го старе́ць петрь въ монáшески ҆обрáзь | And the old man Peter cut his hair in the image of a monk |
71: | ҆и бе́ше сáсь тиꙗ дꙋхо́вници въ по́сть ҆и вь пока҆ꙗ́нїе | And he was fasting and repenting with those clerics |
72: | са͒ сльзи непрестáно плáчеше за сво́й грех | And he cried unceasingly with tears for his sin |
73: | ҆и бг҃а мо́леше | And he was praying to God |
74: | ҆имаше стáрець по́дь свою̀ хи́жицꙋ едну̀ скꙋ́тничкꙋ | The old man had a cellar under his cabin |
75: | ҆и моле́ше се попь стар͛цꙋ пе́трꙋ да го пꙋ́щи ꙋ ѡнáꙗ скꙋтничка | And the priest was begging to the old man Peter to let him into that cellar |
тамо да седѝ ꙋ ѡнáꙗ теснота догде́ е жи́вь | to sit there in that tight place as long as he is alive | |
76: | ҆и стáрець го ꙋпꙋщи ҆ꙋ скꙋтницꙋ | And the old man let him into the cellar |
77: | вьлезе ереи ва ню̀ | The priest went into it |
78: | ҆искова юже желе́зно ҆и на юже то пиро́не | He forged an iron rope (wire) And on the rope (he forged) nails |
79: | ҆и ҆ѡколь; шию сво́ю ҆исковà желе́зни ҆ѡкови сире́чь хáпове | And around his neck he forged iron shackles, that is handcuffs |
80: | ҆и дрꙋгиа крáй н юже́ то закова ꙋ стенꙋ | And he nailed the other end of the rope to the wall |
81: | ҆и като се бе́ше ҆ѡковаль самь се́бе ҆ѡ́каꙗ́ни за сте́нꙋ ҆и не ҆изле́зе три́ днѝ при́ стар͛ца | And as he had nailed himself, the miserable one, to the wall, he did not go out to the old man for three days |
82: | ҆и стáрец видѐ че не излáзи по́пь ҆изь скꙋтницꙋ | And the old man saw that the priest was not going out of the cellar |
83: | ҆á стáрець въле́зе при попà самь | And the old man hilself went in to the priest |
84: | ҆и видѐ попà | And he saw the priest |
85: | ҆ѡколь шїю попꙋ ҆ѡко́ви желе́зни | Around his neck (were) iron shackles |
86: | ҆и ҆юже желе́зно на шїю попꙋ ҆и ꙋ сте́нꙋ заковано | And an iron rope (was) nailed to the priest's neck and to the wall |
87: | ҆и видѐ стáрець | And the old man saw (it) |
88: | ҆и почꙋди́ се | and he started wondering |
89: | ҆и ре́че | and he said: |
90: | що си стори́ль сн҃е тако́ва чꙋдесà | ʺWhy did you do such miracles, o son?ʺ |
91: | ҆и кáко щешь да ҆изи́дешь на про́ходь като си се тꙋ́ка привезáль ҆и ѡковáль | ʺAnd how will you go out for a pass (toilet?) if you have chained and shackled yourself here?ʺ |
92: | ҆и где́ ли потре́бꙋ телꙋ̀ твое́мꙋ да ҆ꙋзмешь | ʺAnd where will you take what you need for the body?ʺ |
93: | ҆á ере́й: ре́че | And the priest said: |
94: | ст҃и ҆о́че ҆ꙗ́ по напре́дь бл҃гꙋ мери́змꙋ ѳимꙗ́новꙋ насити́х͛ се | ʺHoly father, first I had enough of the good scent of the incenseʺ |
95: | ҆и бл҃гаго ми́ра и їзмир͛нꙋ паки довол͛но насити́х͛ се | ʺAnd I had enough of the good peace and the myrrh tooʺ |
96: | ҆á сега злосмрáдиа що ҆излази ѿ ме́не да се наси́тимь | ʺBut now, let me satisfy myself with the evil stench, which pours from me.ʺ |
97: | защо̀ тело ме жен͛ско хотенїе возискà | ʺBecause my body wanted the lust for women.ʺ |
98: | ҆и дш҃ꙋ ҆и те́ло мое ҆ѡмрьси́хь | ʺAnd I tainted both my soul and my body.ʺ |
99: | ҆и не ҆имамь гдѐ глáвꙋ мо́ю подклони́ти | ʺAnd I have nowhere to put my head down.ʺ |
100: | но ти оч҃е бг҃ь да настáви твою ст҃иню | ʺBut you, father, let God guide your truthʺ |
101: | въ двà днѝ или въ три днѝ да приноси́ши ми мáло хле́ба ҆и во́ди; кол͛кото да живи́мь те́ло | ʺBring me a little bread and water every two days or three days just so I keep my body aliveʺ |
102: | ҆и прїими; стáре́ць мол͛бꙋ попо́вꙋ | And the old man accepted the priest's request |
103: | ҆и по два днѝ; прїносеше ҆емꙋ хле́бь ҆и по мàло во́дꙋ | And every two days he brought him bread and a little water |
104: | ҆и по́пь когѝ зе́меше ѿ тоꙗ хле́бь ҆и сась сльзи го ҆ѡблꙗеше | And whenever the priest took from that bread, he poured tears on it |
105: | ҆и тако ѿ хле́ба еде́ше | And he ate from the bread like this |
106: | ҆и тер͛пе ҆о́нь ꙋ тако́во смрáдно ме́сто трѝ го́динь | And he suffered at that stinking place for three years |
107: | ҆и по товà рáди моле́нїе попово ҆ѡпрости бг҃ь ҆емꙋ согреше́нїе | And after that, because of the priest's prayer, God forgave him his sin |
108: | ҆и доиде ҆áньгель гд͒нь | And an angel of God came |
109: | ҆и рече мꙋ | and he said to him: |
110: | ҆ѡ їерее гото́вь бꙋди́ | ʺOh priest, be ready!ʺ |
111: | дойде де́нь да се престáвишь | ʺThe day has come for you to dieʺ |
112: | ҆и паки ре́че петрꙋ ҆áгг҃ель | And the angel said to Peter again: |
113: | ҆иди стар͛че | ʺGo, old manʺ |
114: | разре́ши; покаꙗнїе ере́ю | ʺAllow the priest repentenceʺ |
115: | ҆и приближи се петрь | And Peter went near (him) |
116: | ҆и рече ҆ере́ю | And he said to the priest: |
117: | ти ще́шь сега да ҆ꙋмрешь | ʺYou will now dieʺ |
118: | ҆á попь се молеше стар͛цꙋ | And the priest was begging the old man: |
119: | не ѿвезꙋваи ме ѿ стенꙋ; | ʺDo not untie me from the wall!ʺ |
120: | тако приве́зань да ҆ꙋмремь | ʺLet me die tied like this!ʺ |
121: | ҆á петрь рече | And Peter said: |
122: | не де́й чáдо мое | ʺMy child, do not!ʺ |
123: | не подобáеть те́бе тако да бꙋде | ʺIt is not appropriate for you to be.ʺ |
124: | ҆ере́й бо ҆есѝ | ʺFor you are a priestʺ |
125: | но моли́твꙋ те́бе да прочетемь на исхо́дь дш҃и | ʺBut let us read a prayer for the departure of your soul.ʺ |
126: | ҆и тако бг҃ꙋ дш҃ꙋ свою предаде | and so he gave up his soul to God |
127: | ҆и ꙋспе са миром | and he died in peace |
128: | ҆ѡ їере́и братїа мо́й возлюбле́ни | O priests, my dear brothers, |
како мо́жешь прочете́ти сїе | as you can read this, | |
тáко мо́жеши ҆и сачꙋвáти себе ѿ блꙋ́днаго ҆ѡнаго сотворенїꙗ | thus you can save yourself from the sinful creation. | |
129: | ни́како не подобáеть сщ҃еникꙋ да беседꙋ́еть сáсь млáдимь чꙋ́ждимь женам | It is not appropriate for a priest to have idle conversations with strange, young women, |
нежели ҆и сась старою жено́ю | (more?) than with an old woman. | |
130: | понеже: же́на ҆о́гнь бо ҆есть | Because a woman is a fire. |
131: | добрѐ храни́ се ѿ бесе́дь жен͛ски ҆ꙗ́ко же ѿ ҆ѡг͛нь | Guard yourself from idle discussions with women like from the fire. |
132: | † ◄ [зрѝ] | Look! |
133: | Сїе оц҃и ст҃и сś҃еници ҆и братїѧ мо́й | O holy fathers, priests and my brothers, |
҆или ҆ини читáтель ко́й ꙋбо слꙋчи́т͛ се чи̇тати сїе | or any other reader, who happens to read this, | |
токмо то́мꙋ потре́бно ҆есть разꙋмети сїе, сщ҃енїческо́ де́ло ҆и гре́хь ради сщ҃еническїи; | it is important to (any reader to?) understand this matter of priesthood and sins of the priests. | |
134: | [то ҆есть] сами себе да ꙋмꙋ́дриме | That is: Let us make ourselves wise! |
135: | ҆и да поми́слиме никакь бг҃ꙋ да нѐ согрешáеме | And let us think, how not to sin against God in any way. |
136: | поне́же ҆áг҃гел͛ски вене́ць на глáвꙋ нáшꙋ носїме | Because we carry an angelic wreath on our head(s). |
137: | ҆áще ко́й попь не разꙋме́еть сїе пїсáние | If any priests does not understand this writing, |
то́й ни ва цр҃ковь бж҃їю да не вни́деть | may he does not even enter a church of God! | |
138: | но ҆и мир͛ꙗномь сїе ни́какь да йзвестит | But do not even let him to speak to laymen about this! |
139: | понеже ми сщ҃еници ҆есми нáше согреше́нїе да не вни́деть во ꙋши мир͛ꙗномь | Because we are priests. May our sin does not enter the ears of the laymen! |
141: | но сáми се́бе да ꙋничижи́ме | But let us destroy by ourselves. |
142: | ҆и да се педеп͛шеме дá не ва мꙋкꙋ ве́чнꙋю ꙋпáднеме | And let us educate ourselves, so that we will not fall into eternal torment. |
143: | тамо горко ест | (For) it is bitter there. |
