4: чꙋ́йте бл҃го́словени ҆хр͒толюби́ви хр͒тиáне какво пи́ше ҆и ст҃ое сказáнїе за ст҃и празни́ци да гѝ празнꙋ́ваме [Prologue] Hear, o Christ-loving Christians, what is written in holy books about holy feasts
҆и да гѝ почи́таме ҆и онѝ ст҃и нáмь да бꙋдꙋть помощни́ци; [Prologue] so that we give them due respect, and that the saints will be our helpers
5: Ст҃и преподо́бни ҆о́ц҃ь нáш ї҆ѡӑнь вели́ки по́сникь бе́ше ѿ село скри́на Our Holy Reverend Father John, the great hermit, was from the village of Skrina
6: ҆и бе́ше жи́вь во вре́ме хр͒толюби́ваго петра цр҃а болгар͛скаго And he lived in the time of the Christ-loving Peter, King of Bulgaria
7: ҆и оц҃ь него́вь бе́ше бл҃гочести́вь And his father was pious
8: ҆и не беше ҆ꙗ́кѡ̀ богáть And he was not very rich
9: ҆á ст҃и ҆и҆ѡ҆áнь ѿ младось бг҃а возлю́би And St. John loved God from his youth
10: ҆и ѡстáви свое богаст͛во бáщино́ си And he left the wealth of his father
11: ҆и раздáде го на сиромáси ҆и на не́мощни And he gave it over to the poor and the ill
12: ҆á ѡнь ꙋзе рáзꙋмь And he took up his mind
13: и [ꙋми]сли да ҆иде по́стникь And he decided to go (to be a) hermit
14: ҆и по́йде And he went
15: и ҆ѡстави бащин͛ си, вилае́ть And he left his father's vilayet
16: ҆и ни́що на се́бе не зане́се ва [...]нꙋ And he took nothing with himself to (the desert?)
17: но зане́се токо́ ҆еднꙋ ри́зꙋ ѿ кожꙋ But he took only one leather shirt
18: ҆и ѡ́тиде ꙋ еднꙋ го́рꙋ висо́кꙋ ҆и пꙋстꙋ And he went to a high, deserted mountain
19: ҆и тамо седе́ше And he sat there
20: ҆и ди́ви корен͛ци ко́паше And he dug for wild roots
21: тá си дш҃ꙋ хрáнеше And thus he gave food for his soul
22: ҆и, мал͛ко вре́ме по́минꙋ And some time had passed
23: ҆и диáволь наве́де на него зло́дей разбо́иници And the Devil sent evil robbers against him
24: ҆и доидо́хꙋ но́щемь And they came in the night
25: ҆и фанахꙋ го And they seized him
26: ҆и мно́го го би́хꙋ And they beat him a lot
27: ҆и испꙋди́ха го ѿ тáмо And they expunged him from there
28: ҆иѡ́ань ст҃и ѿ тꙋю го́рꙋ ҆избе́же St. John ran away from the mountain
29: ҆и ѿи́дѐ ꙋ пꙋ́стиню рил͛скꙋю And he went to the desert of Rila
30: ҆и тамо кре́пко бг҃а; мо́леше And there he staunchly prayed to God
31: ҆и нáйде ҆едно шꙋплѡ́ дрь́во And he found a hollow tree
32: та ꙋ дрьво́ то седе́ше And thus he sat in that tree
33: това мꙋ бе́ше хи́жица That was his house
34: ҆и тáмо; де́нь ҆и но́щь седе́ше And there he sat for the day and the night
35: ҆и посте́ше се And he fasted
36: на моли́твꙋ стое́ше He stood (awake) for praying
37: ҆и мно́го сльзи ҆изь ҆ѡч҃и проли́ваше And he poured a lot of tears from his eyes
38: ҆и непрестáно бг҃а мо́леше And he endlessly prayed to God
39: ҆И на това ме́сто седѐ ї҆ѡань ·ѯ· го́динь And John sat there for 60 years
40: ҆и дрꙋ́го ни́що за ꙗдене не́ маше And he had nothing else to eat
41: тькмо бе́реше диви́ рошковци ҆и дивѝ корен͛ци He was taking only wild snails and wild roots
42: та сѝ дш҃ꙋ живе́еше Thus he fed his soul
43: ҆и то́ва ꙋ трѝ днѝ ҆еди́нь пꙋть ҆еде́ше And even that he ate once in three days
44: ҆и ли́це чл҃вече ·ѯ· го́динь не́ видѐ And he did not see a human face for 60 years
45: но сáсь дивѝ зверове се ви́дваше But he was seeing each other with wild beasts
46: ҆и него́во вели́кое трьпе́нїе ви́де гд͒ь And the Lord saw his great suffering
47: ҆и тамо при ҆онꙋю оуню шꙋплю̀ хи́жицꙋ їѡáновꙋ бг҃ь повелѐ And God commanded next to that hollow house of John
48: та изрáсте ҆една тревица And a plant grew
49: зове́ше се сланꙋ́тка It was called chickpea
50: ҆и ѿ тꙋ́ю треви́цꙋ бл҃жени ҆оц҃ь нáшь ст҃и ҆иѡ́ань на мно́га ле́та поживѐ And our blessed father St. John lived for many years from that plant
51: ҆и ва ҆едно́ вре́ме при́идѐ еди́нь пасти́рь And once one shepherd came
52: ҆и видѐ ст҃аго ҆иѡ́ана And he saw St. John
53: ҆и ҆ѿиде And he went away
54: ҆и расказа свꙋ́де по се́ла ҆и по грáдове And he told (about him) everywhere, in all villages and towns
55: ҆и разбрáхꙋ бол͛ни And the ill understood (about him)
56: ҆и мно́гѡ чл҃веци при не́го прихо́ждахꙋ And many people were coming to him
57: ҆и прино́сеха мꙋ; дари за исцеле́нїе And they were bringing him gifts for healing
58: ҆и сась моли́твꙋ ст҃омꙋ здравие прїймахꙋ And by a prayer of the saint they were receiving health
59: ҆и ѿхо́ждахꙋ сѝ And they were departing (thus healed)
60: и изи́де слава ст҃омꙋ по свꙋ̀ зе́млю And the glory of the saint went out all over the world
61: ҆и мно́го хр͒тиӑни. прїидо́хꙋ да седꙋ́ть при не́го And many Christians came to sit with him
62: ҆и тамо ҆ꙋ о́нꙗ вер͛тепь дето̀ седе́ше ст҃и ї҆ѡань ҆и тáмо направи́хꙋ цр҃квꙋ And at that shack, where St. John was sitting, they made a church
63: ҆и наре́кохꙋ ст҃аго начáлника ҆и пасти́ра And they made the saint their leader and shepher
64: ҆и о́нь добрѐ пасе́ше стáдо сво́е And he herded his flock well
65: ҆и много лю́дие бг҃ꙋ приве́де And he brought many people to God
66: ҆и мно́гѡ чꙋдесà со́твори And he made many miracles
67: ҆и дльбо́кꙋ стáрось достигнꙋ And he reached deep old age
68: ҆и много беше мл͒ти́вь And he was very merciful
69: ҆и са миром ко[...] жи́вотꙋ прїиде And (the end?) of his life came peacefully
70: ҆и престáви се And he presented (himself to God, i.e. died)
71: ҆и прїидохꙋ ꙋченици него́ви And his followers came
72: ҆и погре́боха го̀ And they buried him
73: ҆и минꙋ неколи́ко вре́ме And some time passed
74: ҆и ҆ꙗви́ се на ҆ꙋченици те сво́й на с͛нь And he appeared to his followers in a dream
75: ҆и повеле ҆имь да мꙋ̀ прене́сꙋть мощи́ те ꙋ срет͛ски; градь And he commanded them to translate his relics to the town of Sredets
76: ҆и ҆о́ни ѿкри́хꙋ гро́бь ст҃омꙋ And they uncovered the grave of the saint
77: ҆и видо́хꙋ; цело тело́ то преподо́бномꙋ ҆о́ц҃ꙋ нáшемꙋ їѡàнꙋ And they saw (that) the body of our Reverend Father John is whole
78: сто́й не́ погрозне́ло It remains intact
79: ҆и хꙋбава во́нꙗ ҆и блáга меризмà ҆излáзи ҆из гро́ба And nice scent and good odor comes from the grave
80: ҆и прослави́хꙋ бг҃а And they praised God
81: ҆и прене́сохꙋ чт҃ни́ те мо́щи ꙋ среде́ць грáдь And they carried the honorable relics over to the city of Sredets
82: ҆и положи́хꙋ ги ꙋ цр҃квꙋ ст҃омꙋ еѵ͒ли́стꙋ лꙋ́ки And they placed them in the church of St. Luke the Evangelist
83: ҆и по́сле направи́хꙋ дрꙋ́га цр҃ква прехꙋбава And afterwards they made a new, most beautiful church
84: ҆и нарекоха ю во и́ме ст҃омꙋ ҆иѡ́ӑнꙋ And they named it after the name of St. John
85: ҆и мно́го ди́вни ♣ ҆и преслáвни цел͛би ҆исцелевахꙋ бол͛ни And the ill were healed (by?) many miraculous and glorious healings
86: ҆и по това ҆имаше ҆еди́нь крáль ꙋ ҆ѡстрого́мь грáдь And in that time there was a king in the city of Esztergom
87: та бе́ше и сам͛ сѝ краль дочꙋль чꙋдеса ст҃омꙋ їѡáнꙋ And the king himself had heard about the miracles of St. John
88: ҆и поиде да пле́ни грь́ческꙋ зе́млю And he went to conquer the land of Greece
89: ҆и ѡпленї ю And he conquered it
90: ҆и дости́гнꙋ до средець грáдь дето̀ бе́ше тело́ то ст҃омꙋ, їѡ҆анꙋ And he reached the city of Sredets, where was the body of St. John
91: и повеле да зе́ме ҆о́нова чт͒ное телѡ да го занесе ꙋ свое хотáрище And he commanded to take that honorable body to bring it to his territory
92: ҆и зане́соха го And they took it
93: ҆и положи́ха го ꙋ острого́мскꙋ цр҃квꙋ And they placed it in the church of Esztergom
94: ҆и тамо много ҆исцеленїе ҆и чꙋдеса со́твори And it performed many miracles there
95: ҆á ние ѿ много, мал͛ко да скáжеме But let us say less from much
96: ҆и дочꙋ товà ҆о́строго́м͛ски влдка че е слáвень їѡáнь пре́дь бг҃а And the bishop of Esztergom heard, that John is famous before God,
҆и прослáви мꙋ се чꙋдеса по свѝ стрáни and (that) his miracles are famous all around the world
97: ҆á влдка ҆о́строгомски не́ веровà And the bishop of Esztergom did not believe
98: но ре́че But he said:
99: не мамь ҆ꙗ́ ꙋ мое пи́санїе за того́ва чл҃века да се поменꙋ́ва ҆или да прáви чꙋдеса ʺI don't have (anything written) in my books about that man, that he should be respected or that he does miraclesʺ
100: ҆и не́ щеꙗ дá йде да мꙋ се покло́ни ст҃омꙋ ҆обрáзꙋ And he did not want to go to bow down to his holy icon
101: ҆и рече влдка And the bishop said:
102: ҆áзь не верꙋвамь ʺI do not believeʺ
103: ҆и тоꙗ чáсь ҆ѡнеме влдка та And in that moment the bishop became mute
104: ҆и като̀ ҆ѡнеме ҆á ҆ѡнь по́зна че заради това чꙋ́до їѡаново ҆ѡнемѐ And as he became mute, he understood, that he became mute because of a miracle of John
105: ҆и ꙋплаши́ се And he became scared
106: ҆и скоро прїиде при ко́вчего ст҃омꙋ ҆и҆ѡанꙋ And he came soon to the coffin of St. John
107: ҆и припáде на коле́на And he felt to his knees
108: ҆и приплáка And he started to cry
109: ҆и поцелова ст҃омꙋ ков͛чего And he kissed the coffin of the saint
110: ҆и молеше мꙋ се And he prayed to him
111: ҆и дꙋмаше And he spoke:
112: ҆ѡ пр҃подо́бни ҆о́ч҃е ҆ѡверзи́ ми ҆ези́кь ʺO Reverend Father, free my tongueʺ
113: ҆и ст҃и ꙋгодникь хр͒то́вь то́ꙗ чáсь ꙋслишà молбꙋ владикинꙋ And the holy follower of Christ heard the prayer of the bishop in the moment
114: ҆и па мꙋ подáде цел͛бꙋ, ҆и ези́кь And he gave him healing and tongue
115: и продꙋма си ꙗ́сно ҆и хꙋбаво And he spoke clearly and nicely
116: ҆и виде влдка че по[...] And the bishop saw, that (...)
117: и ҆исце́ле And he became healthy
118: тоги́ва сась голема чт҃ь поверꙋвà Then he believed with great honor
119: ҆и сас голе́мь плáчь сво́й гре́хь ҆исповедà And he confessed his sin with a great cry
120: ҆и преподо́бнаго ҆о́ц҃а ҆и самь ҆о́нь прослави And he praised the Reverend Father by himself
121: ҆и б҃а помолѝ And he prayed to God
122: ҆и тáꙗ преславнаꙗ чꙋдеса крáль ви́де And the king saw those most glorious miracles
123: ҆и ꙋди́ви се And he was amazed
124: и са стрáхомь вели́кимь ст҃омꙋ молеше се непрестáно And he prayed endlessly to the saint with a great fear
125: ҆и донесе бг҃ь крáлю разꙋмь, And God brought mind to the king
126: та нáправи ст҃омꙋ ков͛чегь свѐ ѿ Сре́бро ҆и ѿ злато And he made a coffin wholly of silver and gold for the saint
127: ҆и ѿ мл̂ти на де́нь по трѝ пꙋти ходеше And for the sake of mercy he went three times daily
128: та ст҃омꙋ мощи те ҆и ков͛чего цели́ваше And he was kissing the relics and the coffin of the saint
129: ҆и сась мно́го чт҃ь ст҃омꙋ пá го зане́сохꙋ ꙋ средец грáдь And then, with great honors, they brought him back to the town of Sredets
130: ҆и положи́ха го пáки ва цр҃квá та негова And they put him again in his church
131: ҆и по семь повеле́ крáль сщ҃еномꙋ патриар͛хꙋ васи́лию And afterwards the king gave a command to the holy Patriarch Basileus
132: ҆о́че прїиди да прене́семе преслáвнаго ков͛чега до цр͒каго грáда тернова ʺO father, come, so that we carry the glorious coffin to the royal city of Tarnovoʺ
133: и приве́де крáль три́ ста во́йне ҆избрани, да испратáть ст҃аго And the king brought 300 chosen soldiers to escort the saint
134: ҆и патриар͛хь васили́ꙗ. положѝ ст҃аго їѡ҆ана на ко́ла And Patriarch Basileus placed St. John on a wagon
135: ҆и пойдохꙋ свѝ воине по пꙋть And all the soldiers went on the road
136: сась рáдостию вели́кꙋю ҆идѐхꙋ They went with great joy
137: ҆и сась пе́сни ҆и весе́лие ҆и славехꙋ бг҃а ҆и ст҃аго And they praised God and the saint with songs and celebration and (...)
138: ҆и сáсь ти́ꙗ во́йне ҆идехꙋ калꙋ́гере ѿ монасти́рь ст҃омꙋ ҆о́ц҃ꙋ ҆и игꙋ́мень иѡники́ꙗ; сáсь ни́хь And monks from the monastery of the saint went with those soldiers, including Abbot Ioannikios with them
139: ҆и самь бл҃гочести́ви цр҃ь скоро́ ѿтиде на цр͒ки грáдь And the honorable emperor himself went soon to the royal city
140: ҆и повелѐ And he commanded:
141: скоро направете цр҃квꙋ ꙋ грáдь ҆и трьпе́зицꙋ да поло́жиме ст҃аго ҆о́ц҃а ʺMake a church and a table soon in the city, so that we place the holy father (there)ʺ
142: ҆и виде цр҃ь че при́ближи патриархь васи́лиа ҆и сви́ те во́йне що но́сехꙋ ст҃аго ҆о́ц҃а And the emperor saw coming Patriarch Basileus and all the soldiers, who carried the holy father
143: ҆и изле́зе пáки самь цр҃ь да сре́шне ст҃аго на ҆ѡкопь град͛ски And then the emperor himself went out to meet the saint at the ditches of the city,
и свѝ болꙗ́ре сась не́го ҆и воиво́ди ҆и много народь люди́е and all the boyars with him, and dukes, and many many people
144: ҆и рад͛вахꙋ се на ҆оно̀ва чт͒но́е те́ло And they rejoiced at that honorable body
145: ҆и видо́ха го And they saw it
146: ҆и поклони́ха мꙋ се And they paid respect to it
147: ҆и радвáха мꙋ се колико не може члове́кь ҆изре́кти And they rejoiced at it, so much that it cannot be told
148: и седѐ тело́ то преподо́бномꙋ ҆оц҃ꙋ на ок҆оть сед͛мь днѝ догде́ се догрáди црьква тà And the body of the Reverend Father sat on the ditch for seven days, until the church was finished
149: ҆и соврьши́хꙋ ю And they finished it
150: ҆и прине́сохꙋ мощи́ те ст҃омꙋ And they carried in the relics of the saint
151: ҆и положи́хꙋ ги ꙋ ст҃ꙋю но́вꙋ цр҃квꙋ And they placed them in the holy new church
152: ҆и бг҃олеп͛но ҆и до дне́шни де́нь лежѝ на врьхь; землю товà чꙋдотво́рное те́ло преподономꙋ ҆о́ц҃ꙋ And that miraculous body of the Reverend Father gloriously lays until this day on the top of earth
153: ѿ не́го ҆исцеленїе ҆има не изре́чено From it, unspeakable healing comes
154: ҆и до дне́шни де́нь тво́ри чꙋдесà And it performs miracles until today
155: из неговь ҆исто́чникь ҆извира ст҃аꙗ води́ца дето е самь .:. ст҃и ҆о́ц҃ь пиль From its well sprouts holy water, which the holy father himself had drank
156: сле́пи тáмо приходꙋть The blind come there
157: ҆á сь ҆о́ч҃и здрáви ҆отво́дꙋть And they depart with healthy eyes
158: ҆á ѿ недꙋ́гь сле́кави ѿти́дꙋть And hunchbacked from illness go
159: ҆и ѡнѝ ва до́мь сво́й здрáви ѿхождат And they go home healthy
160: безь ҆ꙗ́зикь не́ми тáмо прїидꙋть The mute go there without a tongue
161: а би́стро ҆и бл҃го после хоратꙋ́ють And they speak quickly and well afterwards
162: ҆и бесни тáмо прихо́дꙋт And the mad go there
163: ҆и ҆ѡни ҆исцелевáють And they become healthy
164: ҆и недꙋжени ҆и немо́щни ҆и ѿ све́каквѝ бо́лести And the ill and weak, and (suffering) from any disease,
тамо ко́й прїиде сáсь верою ҆и сáсь све́ срдце whoever (of them) comes there with faith and all heart,
здравїе ҆и исцеленїе при҆емлють .:. they receive health and healing
165: но ѡ͒ пр͒чнаꙗ главо ҆и бл҃годáти ҆и ст҃аго дх҃а ҆исполне́наꙗ сп͒ово со ҆оц҃е́мь ҆ѡбитáлище But, o you most honorable head, filled by virtue and Holy Spirit,
предсто́jӑи ҆ꙋ престо́ла всех цр҃ꙗ stand in front of thrones of all kings with the Father
166: ҆и наслажде́нїе ст҃а ҆еди́носꙋ́щнꙋю тро́йцꙋ Enjoy(ʺmentʺ) the light of the consubstantial Trinity
167: ҆и херꙋвим͛ски со ҆áнг҃гли возглашáй пе́снь: трѝ ст҃ꙋю, And sing the thrice-holy song of Cherubim with the angels
168: вели́ко не йследовáное дерзновенїе ҆име҅ѧѝ Having a great, incomprehensible daring,
моли́ се все мл͒тивомꙋ бг҃ꙋ да сп͒е́ть сро́дники тво҆ꙗ́ тво́й ези́кь pray to the most merciful God to save your relatives, your nation,
не честиви да потре́би to destroy the dishonorable
169: помозѝ ҆оч҃е держáвномꙋ цр҃ꙋ нáшемꙋ Help, o Father, our ruling emperor
170: ҆и покорѝ емꙋ в͛сꙗ проти́вниꙗ враги под но́зе ҆его̀ And subdue all his oppressive enemies beneath his feet
171: ҆áми́нь Amen
172: ве́рꙋ непорочнꙋю: соблюдѝ Watch over untained faith
173: ҆áми́нь, Amen
174: градове нáши ꙋтве́рди Make our cities strong
175: мир ве́сь ꙋмири Give peace to the world

177: глáда, ҆и пагꙋби ҆избавѝ нѝ, Save us from hunger and destruction

179: ҆и ѿ нападе́нїꙗ ѿ дрꙋги ве́ри зачꙋвáй ни And protect us from attacks of other religions
180: ҆ами́нь, Amen
181: стáри лꙋ́ге ҆ꙋтешѝ, Give consolation to the old
182: ҆ами́нь Amen
183: ҆á млáди нáꙋчѝ на зако́нь бж҃їй, And teach the young the Divine Law
184: ҆áми́нь, Amen
185: ҆а безьꙋмни ꙋмꙋдрѝ, Give wisdom to the foolish
186: ҆áми́нь, Amen
187: вдови́ци и си́ротѝ помилꙋ́вай, Give mercy to widows and orphans
188: ҆ами́нь, Amen
189: млáденцѝ воспитáи, Give manners to children
190: ҆áмин Amen
191: ҆и свѝ люди́е тво́й зачꙋ́вай ѿ васáкиа напáсти, And protect all of your people from any danger
192: ҆áми́нь, Amen
193: ҆и ва де́нь стрáшнаго сꙋ́да ѿ левою̀ стрáнꙋ ҆избави́ ни, And at the day of the terrible Judgement save us from the left hand
194: ҆áминь Amen
195: ҆и ѿ деснꙋю странꙋ мл͒твáми твои́ми сподоби́ ни, And make us worthy of the right side by Your prayers
196: ҆áми́нь, Amen
197: ҆и да чꙋ́еме бл҃же́ни ҆о́нь глáсь ѿ влдкꙋ хр͒та б҃а нашего And may us hear that blessed voice of our Lord Christ, our God
198: да нѝ речѐ May He tells us:
199: прїиди́те ҆оц҃а мое́го ʺCome, (you blessed) of my Father,ʺ
дá ви́дите какво́ смь ꙋгото́вил вáмь цр͒тво мое нб͒ное, ѿ сложе́нїе ми́ра се́го ʺso that you see my Kingdom of Heaven I have prepared for you since the beginning of this worldʺ
200: То́мꙋ же ҆о́ц҃ꙋ нáшемꙋ їѡанꙋ, слáва ҆и чт͒ь ҆и поклоненїе: To him, our father John, (be) glory and honor and respect,
оц҃ꙋ ҆и си́нꙋ ҆и ст҃о́мꙋ дх҃ꙋ, (and also) to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit,
нинѣ̀ ҆и при́сно и во ве́ки веко́вь now and ever and forever
