5: St̃i prepodóbni ʾóc͂ь náš ïʾwănь velíki pósnikь béše wt selo skrína Our Holy Reverend Father John, the great hermit, was from the village of Skrina
6: ʾi béše žívь vo vréme xr͒toljubívago petra cr̃a bolgar͛skago And he lived in the time of the Christ-loving Peter, King of Bulgaria
7: ʾi oc͂ь negóvь béše bl͂gočestívь And his father was pious
8: ʾi ne beše ʾjákw` bogátь And he was not very rich
9: ʾá st̃i ʾiʾwʾánь wt mladosь bg͂a vozljúbi And St. John loved God from his youth
10: ʾi wstávi svoe bogast͛vo báštinó si And he left the wealth of his father
11: ʾi razdáde go na siromási ʾi na némoštni And he gave it over to the poor and the ill
12: ʾá wnь uze rázumь And he took up his mind
13: i [umi]sli da ʾide póstnikь And he decided to go (to be a) hermit
14: ʾi póĭde And he went
15: i ʾwstavi baštin͛ si, vilaétь And he left his father's vilayet
16: ʾi níšto na sébe ne zanése va [...]nu And he took nothing with himself to (the desert?)
17: no zanése tokó ʾednu rízu wt kožu But he took only one leather shirt
18: ʾi w´tide u ednu góru visóku ʾi pustu And he went to a high, deserted mountain
19: ʾi tamo sedéše And he sat there
20: ʾi dívi koren͛ci kópaše And he dug for wild roots
21: tá si dš̃u xráneše And thus he gave food for his soul
22: ʾi, mal͛ko vréme póminu And some time had passed
23: ʾi diávolь navéde na nego zlódeĭ razbóinici And the Devil sent evil robbers against him
24: ʾi doidóxu nóštemь And they came in the night
25: ʾi fanaxu go And they seized him
26: ʾi mnógo go bíxu And they beat him a lot
27: ʾi ispudíxa go wt támo And they expunged him from there
28: ʾiw´anь st̃i wt tuju góru ʾizbéže St. John ran away from the mountain
29: ʾi wtídè u pústinju ril͛skuju And he went to the desert of Rila
30: ʾi tamo krépko bg̃a; móleše And there he staunchly prayed to God
31: ʾi náĭde ʾedno šuplw´ drь´vo And he found a hollow tree
32: ta u drьvó to sedéše And thus he sat in that tree
33: tova mu béše xížica That was his house
34: ʾi támo; dénь ʾi nóštь sedéše And there he sat for the day and the night
35: ʾi postéše se And he fasted
36: na molítvu stoéše He stood (awake) for praying
37: ʾi mnógo slьzi ʾizь ʾwč̃i prolívaše And he poured a lot of tears from his eyes
38: ʾi neprestáno bg̃a móleše And he endlessly prayed to God
39: ʾI na tova mésto sedè ïʾwanь *ѯ* gódinь And John sat there for 60 years
40: ʾi drúgo níšto za jadene né maše And he had nothing else to eat
41: tьkmo béreše diví roškovci ʾi divì koren͛ci He was taking only wild snails and wild roots
42: ta sì dš̃u živéeše Thus he fed his soul
43: ʾi tóva u trì dnì ʾedínь putь ʾedéše And even that he ate once in three days
44: ʾi líce čl͂veče *ѯ* gódinь né vidè And he did not see a human face for 60 years
45: no sásь divì zverove se vídvaše But he was seeing each other with wild beasts
46: ʾi negóvo velíkoe trьpénïe víde gd͒ь And the Lord saw his great suffering
47: ʾi tamo pri ʾonuju ounju šupljù xížicu ïwánovu bg̃ь povelè And God commanded next to that hollow house of John
48: ta izráste ʾedna trevica And a plant grew
49: zovéše se slanútka It was called chickpea
50: ʾi wt túju trevícu bl̃ženi ʾoc͂ь nášь st̃i ʾiw´anь na mnóga léta poživè And our blessed father St. John lived for many years from that plant
51: ʾi va ʾednó vréme príidè edínь pastírь And once one shepherd came
52: ʾi vidè st̃ago ʾiw´ana And he saw St. John
53: ʾi ʾwtide And he went away
54: ʾi raskaza svúde po séla ʾi po grádove And he told (about him) everywhere, in all villages and towns
55: ʾi razbráxu bol͛ni And the ill understood (about him)
56: ʾi mnógw čl̃veci pri négo prixóždaxu And many people were coming to him
57: ʾi prinósexa mu; dari za iscelénïe And they were bringing him gifts for healing
58: ʾi sasь molítvu st̃omu zdravie prïĭmaxu And by a prayer of the saint they were receiving health
59: ʾi wtxóždaxu sì And they were departing (thus healed)
60: i izíde slava st̃omu po svù zémlju And the glory of the saint went out all over the world
61: ʾi mnógo xr͒tiăni. prïidóxu da sedútь pri négo And many Christians came to sit with him
62: ʾi tamo ʾu ónja ver͛tepь detò sedéše st̃i ïʾwanь ʾi támo napravíxu cr͂kvu And at that shack, where St. John was sitting, they made a church
63: ʾi narékoxu st̃ago načálnika ʾi pastíra And they made the saint their leader and shepher
64: ʾi ónь dobrè paséše stádo svóe And he herded his flock well
65: ʾi mnogo ljúdie bg̃u privéde And he brought many people to God
66: ʾi mnógw čudesà sótvori And he made many miracles
67: ʾi dlьbóku stárosь dostignu And he reached deep old age
68: ʾi mnogo beše ml͒tívь And he was very merciful
69: ʾi sa mirom ko[...] žívotu prïide And (the end?) of his life came peacefully
70: ʾi prestávi se And he presented (himself to God, i.e. died)
71: ʾi prïidoxu učenici negóvi And his followers came
72: ʾi pogréboxa gò And they buried him
73: ʾi minu nekolíko vréme And some time passed
74: ʾi ʾjaví se na ʾučenici te svóĭ na s͛nь And he appeared to his followers in a dream
75: ʾi povele ʾimь da mù prenésutь moští te u sret͛ski; gradь And he commanded them to translate his relics to the town of Sredets
76: ʾi ʾóni wtkríxu gróbь st̃omu And they uncovered the grave of the saint
77: ʾi vidóxu; celo teló to prepodóbnomu ʾóc͂u nášemu ïwànu And they saw (that) the body of our Reverend Father John is whole
78: stóĭ né pogroznélo It remains intact
79: ʾi xubava vónja ʾi blága merizmà ʾizlázi ʾiz gróba And nice scent and good odor comes from the grave
80: ʾi proslavíxu bg̃a And they praised God
81: ʾi prenésoxu čt̃ní te móšti u sredécь grádь And they carried the honorable relics over to the city of Sredets
82: ʾi položíxu gi u cr͂kvu st̃omu eѵ͒lístu lúki And they placed them in the church of St. Luke the Evangelist
83: ʾi pósle napravíxu drúga cr̃kva prexubava And afterwards they made a new, most beautiful church
84: ʾi narekoxa ju vo íme st̃omu ʾiw´ănu And they named it after the name of St. John
85: ʾi mnógo dívni ♣ ʾi preslávni cel͛bi ʾiscelevaxu bol͛ni And the ill were healed (by?) many miraculous and glorious healings
86: ʾi po tova ʾimaše ʾedínь králь u ʾwstrogómь grádь And in that time there was a king in the city of Esztergom
87: ta béše i sam͛ sì kralь dočulь čudesa st̃omu ïwánu And the king himself had heard about the miracles of St. John
88: ʾi poide da pléni grь´česku zémlju And he went to conquer the land of Greece
89: ʾi wplenï ju And he conquered it
90: ʾi dostígnu do sredecь grádь detò béše teló to st̃omu, ïwʾanu And he reached the city of Sredets, where was the body of St. John
91: i povele da zéme ʾónova čt͒noe telw da go zanese u svoe xotárište And he commanded to take that honorable body to bring it to his territory
92: ʾi zanésoxa go And they took it
93: ʾi položíxa go u ostrogómsku cr͂kvu And they placed it in the church of Esztergom
94: ʾi tamo mnogo ʾiscelenïe ʾi čudesa sótvori And it performed many miracles there
95: ʾá nie wt mnogo, mal͛ko da skážeme But let us say less from much
96: ʾi doču tovà ʾóstrogóm͛ski vldka če e slávenь ïwánь prédь bg̃a And the bishop of Esztergom heard, that John is famous before God,
ʾi proslávi mu se čudesa po svì stráni and (that) his miracles are famous all around the world
97: ʾá vldka ʾóstrogomski né verovà And the bishop of Esztergom did not believe
98: no réče But he said:
99: ne mamь ʾjá u moe písanïe za togóva čl̃veka da se pomenúva ʾili da právi čudesa ʺI don't have (anything written) in my books about that man, that he should be respected or that he does miraclesʺ
100: ʾi né šteja dá ĭde da mu se poklóni st̃omu ʾobrázu And he did not want to go to bow down to his holy icon
101: ʾi reče vldka And the bishop said:
102: ʾázь ne veruvamь ʺI do not believeʺ
103: ʾi toja čásь ʾwneme vldka ta And in that moment the bishop became mute
104: ʾi katò ʾwneme ʾá ʾwnь pózna če zaradi tova čúdo ïwanovo ʾwnemè And as he became mute, he understood, that he became mute because of a miracle of John
105: ʾi uplaší se And he became scared
106: ʾi skoro prïide pri kóvčego st̃omu ʾiʾwanu And he came soon to the coffin of St. John
107: ʾi pripáde na koléna And he felt to his knees
108: ʾi pripláka And he started to cry
109: ʾi pocelova st̃omu kov͛čego And he kissed the coffin of the saint
110: ʾi moleše mu se And he prayed to him
111: ʾi dumaše And he spoke:
112: ʾw pr͂podóbni ʾóč̃e ʾwverzí mi ʾezíkь ʺO Reverend Father, free my tongueʺ
113: ʾi st̃i ugodnikь xr͒tóvь tója čásь uslišà molbu vladikinu And the holy follower of Christ heard the prayer of the bishop in the moment
114: ʾi pa mu podáde cel͛bu, ʾi ezíkь And he gave him healing and tongue
115: i produma si jásno ʾi xubavo And he spoke clearly and nicely
116: ʾi vide vldka če po[...] And the bishop saw, that (...)
117: i ʾiscéle And he became healthy
118: togíva sasь golema čt̃ь poveruvà Then he believed with great honor
119: ʾi sas golémь pláčь svóĭ gréxь ʾispovedà And he confessed his sin with a great cry
120: ʾi prepodóbnago ʾóc͂a ʾi samь ʾónь proslavi And he praised the Reverend Father by himself
121: ʾi b̃a pomolì And he prayed to God
122: ʾi tája preslavnaja čudesa králь víde And the king saw those most glorious miracles
123: ʾi udívi se And he was amazed
124: i sa stráxomь velíkimь st̃omu moleše se neprestáno And he prayed endlessly to the saint with a great fear
125: ʾi donese bg̃ь králju razumь, And God brought mind to the king
126: ta nápravi st̃omu kov͛čegь svè wt Srébro ʾi wt zlato And he made a coffin wholly of silver and gold for the saint
127: ʾi wt ml̂ti na dénь po trì puti xodeše And for the sake of mercy he went three times daily
128: ta st̃omu mošti te ʾi kov͛čego celívaše And he was kissing the relics and the coffin of the saint
129: ʾi sasь mnógo čt̃ь st̃omu pá go zanésoxu u sredec grádь And then, with great honors, they brought him back to the town of Sredets
130: ʾi položíxa go páki va cr͂kvá ta negova And they put him again in his church
131: ʾi po semь povelé králь sś͂enomu patriar͛xu vasíliju And afterwards the king gave a command to the holy Patriarch Basileus
132: ʾóče prïidi da prenéseme preslávnago kov͛čega do cr͒kago gráda ternova ʺO father, come, so that we carry the glorious coffin to the royal city of Tarnovoʺ
133: i privéde králь trí sta vóĭne ʾizbrani, da ispratátь st̃ago And the king brought 300 chosen soldiers to escort the saint
134: ʾi patriar͛xь vasilíja. položì st̃ago ïwʾana na kóla And Patriarch Basileus placed St. John on a wagon
135: ʾi poĭdoxu svì voine po putь And all the soldiers went on the road
136: sasь rádostiju velíkuju ʾidèxu They went with great joy
137: ʾi sasь pésni ʾi vesélie ʾi slavexu bg͂a ʾi st̃ago And they praised God and the saint with songs and celebration and (...)
138: ʾi sásь tíja vóĭne ʾidexu kalúgere wt monastírь st̃omu ʾóc̃u ʾi igúmenь iwnikíja; sásь níxь And monks from the monastery of the saint went with those soldiers, including Abbot Ioannikios with them
139: ʾi samь bl͂gočestívi cr̃ь skoró wttide na cr͒ki grádь And the honorable emperor himself went soon to the royal city
140: ʾi povelè And he commanded:
141: skoro napravete cr͂kvu u grádь ʾi trьpézicu da polóžime st̃ago ʾóc̃a ʺMake a church and a table soon in the city, so that we place the holy father (there)ʺ
142: ʾi vide cr̃ь če príbliži patriarxь vasília ʾi sví te vóĭne što nósexu st̃ago ʾóc̃a And the emperor saw coming Patriarch Basileus and all the soldiers, who carried the holy father
143: ʾi izléze páki samь cr̃ь da sréšne st̃ago na ʾwkopь grad͛ski And then the emperor himself went out to meet the saint at the ditches of the city,
i svì boljáre sasь négo ʾi voivódi ʾi mnogo narodь ljudíe and all the boyars with him, and dukes, and many many people
144: ʾi rad͛vaxu se na ʾonòva čt͒nóe télo And they rejoiced at that honorable body
145: ʾi vidóxa go And they saw it
146: ʾi pokloníxa mu se And they paid respect to it
147: ʾi radváxa mu se koliko ne može človékь ʾizrékti And they rejoiced at it, so much that it cannot be told
148: i sedè teló to prepodóbnomu ʾoc͂u na okʾotь sed͛mь dnì dogdé se dográdi crьkva tà And the body of the Reverend Father sat on the ditch for seven days, until the church was finished
149: ʾi sovrьšíxu ju And they finished it
150: ʾi prinésoxu moští te st̃omu And they carried in the relics of the saint
151: ʾi položíxu gi u st̃uju nóvu cr͂kvu And they placed them in the holy new church
152: ʾi bg̃olep͛no ʾi do dnéšni dénь ležì na vrьxь; zemlju tovà čudotvórnoe télo prepodonomu ʾóc͂u And that miraculous body of the Reverend Father gloriously lays until this day on the top of earth
