2: i beše na edinъ mntrъ igumenъ And he was an abbot of a monastery
3: i na mnogo dxovnici beše načelnikъ And he was the head of many other clerics
4: a gdъ bgъ našъ iisъ xrtosъ sakaše da go ispita But our Lord God Jesus Christ wanted to test him
5: zašto isъ prъvno vreme miluvaše siromasi i siroti because in the beginning he loved poor ones and orphans
6: i za nixъ bga moleše And he prayed God for them
7: a boljare nenavideše But he despised the haughty (boyars)
8: posle se otfrъli ot siromasi
9: i poče da druguva sasъ bgati boljare And he began to make friendship with rich boyars
10: i mnogo poče da se veliči And he began to think of himself a lot
11: i sasъ boljare se podnosi And he became alike to boyars
12: a mltivi gdъ priide And the merciful Lord came
13: i valeze u mntrъ kato edinъ siromax starecъ And he entered the monastery (dressed) as a poor old man
14: i reče vrataru mntirъskomu And he said to the gatekeeper of the monastery:
15: čedo idi reči igumenu ʺO child, go and tell the abbotʺ
16: onъ tebe bratъ ʺ(As) he is a brother to youʺ
17: dano doide pri mene ʺMay he come to me!ʺ
18: zašto se mnogo trudixъ dogde pri vasъ doidoxъ ʺFor I worked hard to come to youʺ
19: i otide vratarъ And the gatekeeper went
20: i naide igumena And he found the abbot
21: sasъ boljare sedeše i xorotuvaše He sat and discussed with boyars
22: i postoja malo And he stood a little
23: i kaza mu za onoga siromaxa starъca And he told (the abbot) about the poor old man
24: a ne vide če e samъ xrtosъ došelъ But he did not see that (it was) Christ Himself had come
25: a igumenъ se rasrъdi na nego But the abbot became angry about him
26: i reče mu And he said to him:
27: ne vidiš li mene če xorotuvamъ sasъ luge ʺDon't you see I am discussing with people?ʺ
28: ta zašto si go puštilъ ʺSo why did you let him in?ʺ
29: idi ne puštai go ʺGo and do not let him in!ʺ
30: i otide si vratarъ And the gatekeeper went away
31: a dlъgo trъpelivъ gdъ počeka dogde doide† And the very patient Lord waited until he came
32: i doide And he came
33: i ne poglednu u siromaxa starъca And he did not look towards the poor old man
34: i po nekolъko časi doide edinъ ot boljare te And after couple of hours one of the boyars came
35: i nego skoro igumenъ samъ u vrata srešnu And the abbot himself met him quickly at the door
36: i prifana go And he accepted him in
37: i pokloni mu se And he bowed to him
38: i privede go na posteli mnogo ceni And he brought him to precious seats
39: i prinese jastija i pitija And he brought food and drinks
40: i samъ xrtosъ vide igumena če mnogo ljubi boljare And Christ Himself saw, that the abbot loves boyars much
41: i xrtosъ reče igumenu And the Christ said to the abbot:
42: molim ti se če imamъ nešto da ti produmamъ ʺI pray you, o child, (to listen,) for I have something to tell youʺ
43: a onъ go i ne pogleda And he did not even look at him
44: no sasъ bgati ide na obedъ But he went to lunch with the rich ones
45: i paki po obede provodi do vrata boljarina And he again followed the boyar to the gate after the lunch
46: i otide si boljarinъ And the boyar went away
47: a igumenъ se vrъnu nazatъ But the abbot returned back
48: i sednu na stolъ xubavъ And he sat down on a beautiful throne
49: i stanuxa pri nego slugi And servants stood up next to him
50: ta mu stojatъ na divanъ And thus they stay ready to serve
51: i ne gleda siromaxa i glupavago starъca And he did not look at that poor and foolish old man
52: i stanu večerъ And the evening came
53: i ne prifana go u domъ svoi And he did not accept him to his own house,

55: i reče vrataru And he said to the gatekeeper:
56: skoro idi reči igumenu ʺGo and tell (this) soon to the abbotʺ

58: ja bexъ došelъ da vi dademъ blgoslovenie ʺI have come to give your a blessingʺ
59: a vie ne štejaxte ni ou domъ vašъ da me puštite ni dumu mene produmaxte ʺBut you did not even want to let me in nor tell a word to meʺ
60: gledaite i vie da otvrъnemъ i ja lice moe ot vasъ ʺSo watch me now turn my face from you away tooʺ
61: i ot svi strani buinici da puštimъ na vasъ ʺAnd may I let crazy men from all lands to come upon youʺ
62: i ljuti razboinici da puštimъ da vi sakrušatъ ʺAnd may I let fierce robbers upon you to destroy youʺ
63: i bolesti teški da puštimъ na vasъ da vi isušatъ žili i kosti ʺAnd may I let grave illnesses to dry your veins and bonesʺ
64: zašto e vam takovo trebuvalo ʺBecause thus you had neededʺ
65: a crtvo moe nbnoe ne e vamъ trebuvalo ʺBut you had not needed my Kingdom of Heavenʺ
66: i kato produma tia strašni reči And as he said those terrible words,

68: no pomiluvaite gi But give them mercy
69: i daruvaite gi da ne rečete And give them gifts, so that you will not say:
prosjakъ xodi ʺA beggar comes!ʺ
da zatvorite vrata vaši ot nego to close the door for him
70: da znaete ot samago xrta vrata zatvarate Know, that you are closing the door for Christ Himself
71: i da ne rečete And do not say:
72: prosjakъ xodi po prosiju ʺA beggar comes to beg!ʺ
73: no da znaete če samъ xrtosъ xodi na ispitiju Know, that Christ Himself goes to test you
74: koi dava siromaxu za bga samomu xrtu u ruke dava He, who gives to a beggar for God, gives to Christ Himself to His hands
75: i xrtosъ tomuva člveku mnogo blgo dobro u ruke dava And the Christ gives a lot of good to that man in his hands
76: i ne vidi ot kade mu ide And he does not see, from where (this good) comes
77: a to samъ si xrtosъ mu pomaga And it is Christ Himself who helps him
78: a koi ede i pie sasъ bogati boljare And he, who eats and drinks with rich boyars,
a siromasi ne gleda and does not look at the poor,
a to skoro zagubuva boljarъstvo he soon loses his boyar status (wealth? pride?)
79: i prezъ igleni uši može prolazi And he can (sooner) go through an eye (lit. ʺearʺ) of a needle
80: a u crtvo nbnoe nikakъ ne može uleznu But he cannot enter the Kingdom of Heaven by any way
81: čuete li blveni xrtijani kakvo reče gdъ Do you hear, o blessed Christians, what does God say?
82: ja za svi vasъ žalimъ i za bgati i za siromasi ʺI do mourn for all of you - both the rich and the poorʺ
83: koi za bga ne dava He, who does not give (alms) for (the sake of) God,
onъ zagubuva crtvo nebesnoe he loses the Kingdom of Heaven,
i na volju diavolsku se predava and he puts himself to the will of the Devil
84: i diavolъ šte da go zavede u muku večnuju And the Devil will bring him to the eternal torment
85: reče xrtosъ (Thus) spoke the Christ:
86: molimъ vi se čeda moi ʺI pray you, my children!ʺ
87: i slušaite me ʺAnd listen to me!ʺ
88: budete mltivi ʺBe merciful!ʺ
89: i čuždinъci priimaite u domъ vašъ ʺAnd accept foreigners in your houseʺ
90: putnici naxranete ʺFeed the travellersʺ
91: i žedni napoete ʺAnd give drink to the thirstyʺ
92: goli oblečete ʺClothe the nakedʺ
93: bosi obuite ʺGive shoes to the barefeetʺ
94: siromasi prigledaite ʺTake heed of the poorʺ
95: i ja vamъ da dademъ večnoe blgo da dobiete do sitosъ
96: i da budete blagosloveni oca moego ʺAnd may you be blessed by my Fatherʺ
97: i da polučite crstvo moe nbnoe ʺAnd may you receive my Kingdom of Heavenʺ
98: bgu že našemu slava i čtъ i poklonenie Glory (be) to our God, and honor and respect,
ocu i sinu i stomu dxu to the Father and the Son, and the Holy Spirit,
i nině i prno i vo veki vekovъ and now and ever and forever
