1: === Вь ҆едно вре́ме ҆имаше ҆еди́нь стáрь дх҃овни́кь Once there was an old cleric
2: ҆и бе́ше на ҆еди́нь мн͒трь ҆игꙋ҆мень And he was an abbot of a monastery
3: ҆и н҆á мно́го дх҃овни́ци бе́ше наче́лникь And he was the head of many other clerics
4: ҆á гд͒ь бг҃ь нáшь ҆иїс҃ь хр͒то́сь сáкаше да го̀ ҆испита But our Lord God Jesus Christ wanted to test him
5: Защо̀ ҆ись пр͛ьвнѡ вре́ме милꙋ́ваше си́ромáси ҆и си́роти because in the beginning he loved poor ones and orphans
6: ҆и за ни́хь бг҃а мо́леше And he prayed God for them
7: ҆á бол҆ꙗре ненáвидеше But he despised the haughty (boyars)
8: после се ѿфрьлѝ ѿ сиромáси
9: ҆и поче дá дрꙋгꙋ́ва сась бг҃ати болꙗ́ре And he began to make friendship with rich boyars
10: ҆и мно́го почѐ да сѐ вели́чи And he began to think of himself a lot
11: ҆и сась болꙗре се подно́си And he became alike to boyars
12: ҆á мл͒ти́ви гд͒ь прїиде And the merciful Lord came
13: ҆и валезе ꙋ мн͒трь като ҆еди́нь си́ромах стáрець And he entered the monastery (dressed) as a poor old man
14: ҆и ре́че вратарꙋ мн͒ти́р͛скомꙋ And he said to the gatekeeper of the monastery:
15: че́до ҆идѝ речѝ ҆игꙋ́менꙋ ʺO child, go and tell the abbotʺ
16: ҆ѡнь тебѐ брáть ʺ(As) he is a brother to youʺ
17: дано̀ до́йде при ме́не ʺMay he come to me!ʺ
18: защо́ се мно́го трꙋди́хь догдѐ при вáсь до́йдохь ʺFor I worked hard to come to youʺ
19: ҆и ҆ѿиде вратáрь And the gatekeeper went
20: ҆и наиде ҆игꙋмена And he found the abbot
21: сась болꙗ́ре седе́ше ҆и хоротꙋ́ваше He sat and discussed with boyars
22: ҆и постоꙗ мáлѡ And he stood a little
23: и казá мꙋ за ҆ѡнога сиромáха стар͛ца And he told (the abbot) about the poor old man
24: ҆á не виде че е сáмь хр͒то́сь дошель But he did not see that (it was) Christ Himself had come
25: ҆á ҆игꙋмен͛ се расрьдѝ на него But the abbot became angry about him
26: ҆и рече мꙋ And he said to him:
27: не ви́диш ли ме́не че хоротꙋ́вамь сáсь лꙋ́ге ʺDon't you see I am discussing with people?ʺ
28: та защо́ си го пꙋщи́ль ʺSo why did you let him in?ʺ
29: ҆идѝ не пꙋщáй го ʺGo and do not let him in!ʺ
30: ҆и ѿиде́ си вратáрь And the gatekeeper went away
31: ҆á дль́гѡ трьпели́вь гд͒ь почекà догдѐ до҆иде† And the very patient Lord waited until he came
32: ҆и до́йде And he came
33: ҆и не по́гледнꙋ ꙋ сиромáха стáр͛ца And he did not look towards the poor old man
34: ҆и по неко́лько чáси до́йде ҆еди́нь ѿ болꙗ́ре те And after couple of hours one of the boyars came
35: ҆и не́гѡ̀ ско́ро ҆игꙋмень сáмь ꙋ врáта сре́шнꙋ And the abbot himself met him quickly at the door
36: ҆и при́фанá го And he accepted him in
37: ҆и по́клони́ мꙋ се And he bowed to him
38: ҆и приве́де го на посте́ли мно́го це́ни And he brought him to precious seats
39: ҆и принесе ҆ꙗ́стиꙗ ҆и пи́тиꙗ̀ And he brought food and drinks
40: ҆и сáмь хр͒тось видѐ ҆игꙋмена че мно́го лю́би болꙗ́ре And Christ Himself saw, that the abbot loves boyars much
41: ҆и хр͒то́сь ре́че ҆игꙋменꙋ And the Christ said to the abbot:
42: молим ти сѐ ч҃е ҆имамь нещо̀ да тѝ продꙋ́мамь ʺI pray you, o child, (to listen,) for I have something to tell youʺ
43: ҆á ҆ѡнь гѡ̀ ҆и не погле́да And he did not even look at him
44: но сáсь бг҃ати ҆иде на ҆ѡбе́дь But he went to lunch with the rich ones
45: ҆и пáки по ҆о́бе́де про́води до врáта болꙗ́рина And he again followed the boyar to the gate after the lunch
46: ҆и ҆ѿиде́ си болꙗ́ринь And the boyar went away
47: ҆á и́гꙋмен͛ се врьнꙋ назáть But the abbot returned back
48: ҆и седнꙋ на сто́ль хꙋбáвь And he sat down on a beautiful throne
49: ҆и станꙋха при не́го слꙋгѝ And servants stood up next to him
50: та мꙋ стоꙗ́ть на дивáнь And thus they stay ready to serve
51: ҆и не гле́да сиромáха ҆и глꙋ́паваго стар͛ца And he did not look at that poor and foolish old man
52: ҆и стáнꙋ ве́черь And the evening came
53: ҆и не при́фана го ꙋ домь сво́й And he did not accept him to his own house,
да преноще́ва то҆ꙗ́ чꙋжд҆инець старец to have a place of sleep, that old stranger
54: ҆и пойде да сѝ ҆иде And he went to go
55: ҆и рече вратáрꙋ And he said to the gatekeeper:
56: скоро́ ҆идѝ речѝ ӥгꙋме́нꙋ ʺGo and tell (this) soon to the abbotʺ
57: ҆ѡнь сака слáвꙋ чл҃вечес-кꙋ да бꙋ́де слáвень ʺHe wants glory among humansʺ
58: ҆ꙗ́ бе́хь доше́ль да ви́, даде́мь бл҃го́слове́нїе ʺI have come to give your a blessingʺ
59: ҆á вие не ще҆ꙗ́хте н҆и ҅оу до́мь вáшь да мѐ пꙋ́щите ни́ дꙋмꙋ, ме́не продꙋмáхте ʺBut you did not even want to let me in nor tell a word to meʺ
60: гледайте ҆и ви́е да ѿврьнемь ҆и ꙗ лицѐ мое ѿ вáсь ʺSo watch me now turn my face from you away tooʺ
61: ҆и ѿ свѝ странѝ бꙋ́йни́ци да пꙋщи́мь на вась ʺAnd may I let crazy men from all lands to come upon youʺ
62: ҆и люти, разбойници да пꙋ́щимь да вѝ сакрꙋшать; ʺAnd may I let fierce robbers upon you to destroy youʺ
63: ҆и боле́сти те́шки да пꙋщи́мь на вáсь да ви ҆исꙋшать жи́ли ҆и ко́сти ʺAnd may I let grave illnesses to dry your veins and bonesʺ
64: защо́ е вам таково требꙋвáло ʺBecause thus you had neededʺ
65: ҆á цр͒тво моѐ нб͒но̀е не е вáмь требꙋвáло ʺBut you had not needed my Kingdom of Heavenʺ
66: ҆и като̀ продꙋмà тиа стрáшни ре́чи And as he said those terrible words,
тоги́ва го познáха че е бил хр͒то͒ва ҆ѡбразь then they realized that he was an image of Christ,
се претво́риль като̀ неко́й сиромахь чл҃ве́кь changed into some poor man
67: То́ва чꙋ́до слꙋ́шаите ҆и ве́рвайте брáте Hear and believe this miracle, o brothers,
да не ѿврь́нете ҆о́чи ѿ си́ромаси про́сꙗци so that you will not turn your eyes away from poor beggars,
да гѝ не помилꙋ́вате giving them no mercy
68: но помилꙋ́вайте ги But give them mercy
69: ҆и дарꙋвáйте ги да не рече́те And give them gifts, so that you will not say:
просꙗ́кь хо́ди ʺA beggar comes!ʺ
да затво́рите врáта вáши ѿ не́го to close the door for him
70: да знáете ѿ сáмаго хр͒тá врáта затвáрате Know, that you are closing the door for Christ Himself
71: ҆и да не речете And do not say:
72: про́сꙗкь хо́ди по просию ʺA beggar comes to beg!ʺ
73: но да знáете че сáмь хр͒то́сь ходи на ҆испитїю Know, that Christ Himself goes to test you
74: ко́й дáва си́ромахꙋ за бг҃а само́мꙋ хр͒тꙋ̀ ꙋ рꙋке дáва He, who gives to a beggar for God, gives to Christ Himself to His hands
75: ҆и хр͒тось, томꙋ́ва чл҃векꙋ мно́го бл҃го добро̀ ꙋ рꙋке, дáва And the Christ gives a lot of good to that man in his hands
76: ҆и не види ѿ каде мꙋ ҆иде And he does not see, from where (this good) comes
77: ҆á то сам͛ сѝ хр͒тось мꙋ помáга And it is Christ Himself who helps him
78: ҆á ко́й ҆еде ҆и пие сась богáти, болꙗ́ре And he, who eats and drinks with rich boyars,
҆á сиромáси не гле́да and does not look at the poor,
҆á то ско́ро загꙋбꙋва болꙗ́р͛ство he soon loses his boyar status (wealth? pride?)
79: ҆и презь ҆игле́ни ꙋши мо́же пролáзи And he can (sooner) go through an eye (lit. ʺearʺ) of a needle
80: ҆á ꙋ цр͒тво нбн͒ое никáкь; не мо́же ꙋле́знꙋ But he cannot enter the Kingdom of Heaven by any way
81: чꙋете ли бл҃ве́ни хр͒тиjӑни какво̀ ре́че гд͒ь Do you hear, o blessed Christians, what does God say?
82: ҆ꙗ́ за свѝ вáсь жáлимь; ҆и за бг҃ати ҆и за с҆иромáси ʺI do mourn for all of you - both the rich and the poorʺ
83: ко́й за бг҃а не дáва He, who does not give (alms) for (the sake of) God,
҆онь загꙋбꙋва цр͒тво небе́сное he loses the Kingdom of Heaven,
҆и на волю ди҆аволскꙋ се предáва and he puts himself to the will of the Devil
84: ҆и диаволь ще да го заведѐ ꙋ мꙋкꙋ вечнꙋю And the Devil will bring him to the eternal torment
85: ре́че хр͒то́сь, (Thus) spoke the Christ:
86: моли́м͛ ви се че́да мо́й ʺI pray you, my children!ʺ
87: ҆и слꙋшáйте ме ʺAnd listen to me!ʺ
88: бꙋдете мл͒ти́ви ʺBe merciful!ʺ
89: ҆и чꙋждин͛ци прїимáйте ꙋ домь вашь ʺAnd accept foreigners in your houseʺ
90: пꙋ́тници нахрáнете ʺFeed the travellersʺ
91: ҆и же́дни напоете ʺAnd give drink to the thirstyʺ
92: го́ли ҆ѡбле́чете ʺClothe the nakedʺ
93: бо́си ҆ѡбꙋ́йте ʺGive shoes to the barefeetʺ
94: сиромáси пригледáйте ʺTake heed of the poorʺ
95: ҆и ҆ꙗ́ вáмь да даде́мь вечное бл҃го да доби́ете до си́тось
96: ҆и да бꙋ́дете блáгослове́ни ҆о́ц҃а мо҆его̀ ʺAnd may you be blessed by my Fatherʺ
97: ҆и да полꙋ́чите цр͒ство мо́ѐ нбн͒ое ʺAnd may you receive my Kingdom of Heavenʺ
98: бг҃ꙋ же нáшемꙋ слава ҆и чт͒ь ҆и поклоненїе Glory (be) to our God, and honor and respect,
҆о́ц҃ꙋ и си́нꙋ ҆и ст҃омꙋ дх҃ꙋ to the Father and the Son, and the Holy Spirit,
҆и ни́нѣ ҆и пр͒но ҆и во ве́ки веко́вь and now and ever and forever
99: ҆áми́нь amen
