| 1: | === Вь ҆едно вре́ме ҆имаше ҆еди́нь стáрь дх҃овни́кь | Once there was an old cleric |
And he was an abbot of a monastery |
And he was the head of many other clerics |
But our Lord God Jesus Christ wanted to test him |
| 5: | Защо̀ ҆ись пр͛ьвнѡ вре́ме милꙋ́ваше си́ромáси ҆и си́роти | because in the beginning he loved poor ones and orphans |
And he prayed God for them |
But he despised the haughty (boyars) |
And he began to make friendship with rich boyars |
And he began to think of himself a lot |
And he became alike to boyars |
And the merciful Lord came |
And he entered the monastery (dressed) as a poor old man |
And he said to the gatekeeper of the monastery: |
O child, go and tell the abbotʺ |
(As) he is a brother to youʺ |
May he come to me!ʺ |
For I worked hard to come to youʺ |
And the gatekeeper went |
And he found the abbot |
He sat and discussed with boyars |
And he stood a little |
And he told (the abbot) about the poor old man |
But he did not see that (it was) Christ Himself had come |
But the abbot became angry about him |
And he said to him: |
Don't you see I am discussing with people?ʺ |
So why did you let him in?ʺ |
Go and do not let him in!ʺ |
And the gatekeeper went away |
And the very patient Lord waited until he came |
And he came |
And he did not look towards the poor old man |
And after couple of hours one of the boyars came |
And the abbot himself met him quickly at the door |
And he accepted him in |
And he bowed to him |
And he brought him to precious seats |
And he brought food and drinks |
And Christ Himself saw, that the abbot loves boyars much |
And the Christ said to the abbot: |
I pray you, o child, (to listen,) for I have something to tell youʺ |
And he did not even look at him |
But he went to lunch with the rich ones |
And he again followed the boyar to the gate after the lunch |
And the boyar went away |
But the abbot returned back |
And he sat down on a beautiful throne |
And servants stood up next to him |
And thus they stay ready to serve |
And he did not look at that poor and foolish old man |
And the evening came |
And he did not accept him to his own house, |
| да преноще́ва то҆ꙗ́ чꙋжд҆инець старец | to have a place of sleep, that old stranger | |
And he went to go |
And he said to the gatekeeper: |
Go and tell (this) soon to the abbotʺ |
He wants glory among humansʺ |
I have come to give your a blessingʺ |
But you did not even want to let me in nor tell a word to meʺ |
So watch me now turn my face from you away tooʺ |
And may I let crazy men from all lands to come upon youʺ |
And may I let fierce robbers upon you to destroy youʺ |
And may I let grave illnesses to dry your veins and bonesʺ |
Because thus you had neededʺ |
But you had not needed my Kingdom of Heavenʺ |
And as he said those terrible words, |
| тоги́ва го познáха че е бил хр͒то͒ва ҆ѡбразь | then they realized that he was an image of Christ, | |
| се претво́риль като̀ неко́й сиромахь чл҃ве́кь | changed into some poor man | |
Hear and believe this miracle, o brothers, |
| да не ѿврь́нете ҆о́чи ѿ си́ромаси про́сꙗци | so that you will not turn your eyes away from poor beggars, | |
| да гѝ не помилꙋ́вате | giving them no mercy | |
But give them mercy |
And give them gifts, so that you will not say: |
A beggar comes!ʺ | |
| да затво́рите врáта вáши ѿ не́го | to close the door for him | |
Know, that you are closing the door for Christ Himself |
And do not say: |
A beggar comes to beg!ʺ |
Know, that Christ Himself goes to test you |
He, who gives to a beggar for God, gives to Christ Himself to His hands |
And the Christ gives a lot of good to that man in his hands |
And he does not see, from where (this good) comes |
And it is Christ Himself who helps him |
And he, who eats and drinks with rich boyars, |
| ҆á сиромáси не гле́да | and does not look at the poor, | |
| ҆á то ско́ро загꙋбꙋва болꙗ́р͛ство | he soon loses his boyar status (wealth? pride?) | |
And he can (sooner) go through an eye (lit. ʺearʺ) of a needle |
But he cannot enter the Kingdom of Heaven by any way |
| 81: | чꙋете ли бл҃ве́ни хр͒тиjӑни какво̀ ре́че гд͒ь | Do you hear, o blessed Christians, what does God say? |
I do mourn for all of you - both the rich and the poorʺ |
He, who does not give (alms) for (the sake of) God, |
| ҆онь загꙋбꙋва цр͒тво небе́сное | he loses the Kingdom of Heaven, | |
| ҆и на волю ди҆аволскꙋ се предáва | and he puts himself to the will of the Devil | |
And the Devil will bring him to the eternal torment |
(Thus) spoke the Christ: |
I pray you, my children!ʺ |
And listen to me!ʺ |

And give drink to the thirstyʺ |
Clothe the nakedʺ |
Give shoes to the barefeetʺ |
Take heed of the poorʺ |
And may you be blessed by my Fatherʺ |
And may you receive my Kingdom of Heavenʺ |
Glory (be) to our God, and honor and respect, |
