| 1: | === Vь ʾedno vréme ʾimaše ʾedínь stárь dx͂ovníkь | Once there was an old cleric |
| 2: | ʾi béše na ʾedínь mn͒trь ʾiguʾmenь | And he was an abbot of a monastery |
| 3: | ʾi nʾá mnógo dx͂ovníci béše načélnikь | And he was the head of many other clerics |
| 4: | ʾá gd͒ь bg̃ь nášь ʾiïs̃ь xr͒tósь sákaše da gò ʾispita | But our Lord God Jesus Christ wanted to test him |
| 5: | Zaštò ʾisь pr͛ьvnw vréme milúvaše síromási ʾi síroti | because in the beginning he loved poor ones and orphans |
| 6: | ʾi za níxь bg̃a móleše | And he prayed God for them |
| 7: | ʾá bolʾjare nenávideše | But he despised the haughty (boyars) |
| 8: | posle se wtfrьlì wt siromási | |
| 9: | ʾi poče dá drugúva sasь bg̃ati boljáre | And he began to make friendship with rich boyars |
| 10: | ʾi mnógo počè da sè velíči | And he began to think of himself a lot |
| 11: | ʾi sasь boljare se podnósi | And he became alike to boyars |
| 12: | ʾá ml͒tívi gd͒ь prïide | And the merciful Lord came |
| 13: | ʾi valeze u mn͒trь kato ʾedínь síromax stárecь | And he entered the monastery (dressed) as a poor old man |
| 14: | ʾi réče vrataru mn͒tír͛skomu | And he said to the gatekeeper of the monastery: |
| 15: | čédo ʾidì rečì ʾigúmenu | ʺO child, go and tell the abbotʺ |
| 16: | ʾwnь tebè brátь | ʺ(As) he is a brother to youʺ |
| 17: | danò dóĭde pri méne | ʺMay he come to me!ʺ |
| 18: | zaštó se mnógo trudíxь dogdè pri vásь dóĭdoxь | ʺFor I worked hard to come to youʺ |
| 19: | ʾi ʾwtide vratárь | And the gatekeeper went |
| 20: | ʾi naide ʾigumena | And he found the abbot |
| 21: | sasь boljáre sedéše ʾi xorotúvaše | He sat and discussed with boyars |
| 22: | ʾi postoja málw | And he stood a little |
| 23: | i kazá mu za ʾwnoga siromáxa star͛ca | And he told (the abbot) about the poor old man |
| 24: | ʾá ne vide če e sámь xr͒tósь došelь | But he did not see that (it was) Christ Himself had come |
| 25: | ʾá ʾigumen͛ se rasrьdì na nego | But the abbot became angry about him |
| 26: | ʾi reče mu | And he said to him: |
| 27: | ne vídiš li méne če xorotúvamь sásь lúge | ʺDon't you see I am discussing with people?ʺ |
| 28: | ta zaštó si go puštílь | ʺSo why did you let him in?ʺ |
| 29: | ʾidì ne puštáĭ go | ʺGo and do not let him in!ʺ |
| 30: | ʾi wtidé si vratárь | And the gatekeeper went away |
| 31: | ʾá dlь´gw trьpelívь gd͒ь počekà dogdè doʾide† | And the very patient Lord waited until he came |
| 32: | ʾi dóĭde | And he came |
| 33: | ʾi ne póglednu u siromáxa stár͛ca | And he did not look towards the poor old man |
| 34: | ʾi po nekólьko čási dóĭde ʾedínь wt boljáre te | And after couple of hours one of the boyars came |
| 35: | ʾi négw` skóro ʾigumenь sámь u vráta sréšnu | And the abbot himself met him quickly at the door |
| 36: | ʾi prífaná go | And he accepted him in |
| 37: | ʾi pókloní mu se | And he bowed to him |
| 38: | ʾi privéde go na postéli mnógo céni | And he brought him to precious seats |
| 39: | ʾi prinese ʾjástija ʾi pítijà | And he brought food and drinks |
| 40: | ʾi sámь xr͒tosь vidè ʾigumena če mnógo ljúbi boljáre | And Christ Himself saw, that the abbot loves boyars much |
| 41: | ʾi xr͒tósь réče ʾigumenu | And the Christ said to the abbot: |
| 42: | molim ti sè č̃e ʾimamь neštò da tì prodúmamь | ʺI pray you, o child, (to listen,) for I have something to tell youʺ |
| 43: | ʾá ʾwnь gw` ʾi ne pogléda | And he did not even look at him |
| 44: | no sásь bg͂ati ʾide na ʾwbédь | But he went to lunch with the rich ones |
| 45: | ʾi páki po ʾóbéde próvodi do vráta boljárina | And he again followed the boyar to the gate after the lunch |
| 46: | ʾi ʾwtidé si boljárinь | And the boyar went away |
| 47: | ʾá ígumen͛ se vrьnu nazátь | But the abbot returned back |
| 48: | ʾi sednu na stólь xubávь | And he sat down on a beautiful throne |
| 49: | ʾi stanuxa pri négo slugì | And servants stood up next to him |
| 50: | ta mu stojátь na divánь | And thus they stay ready to serve |
| 51: | ʾi ne gléda siromáxa ʾi glúpavago star͛ca | And he did not look at that poor and foolish old man |
| 52: | ʾi stánu véčerь | And the evening came |
| 53: | ʾi ne prífana go u domь svóĭ | And he did not accept him to his own house, |
| da prenoštéva toʾjá čuždʾinecь starec | to have a place of sleep, that old stranger | |
| 54: | ʾi poĭde da sì ʾide | And he went to go |
| 55: | ʾi reče vratáru | And he said to the gatekeeper: |
| 56: | skoró ʾidì rečì īguménu | ʺGo and tell (this) soon to the abbotʺ |
| 57: | ʾwnь saka slávu čl͂večes-ku da búde slávenь | ʺHe wants glory among humansʺ |
| 58: | ʾjá béxь došélь da ví, dadémь bl̃góslovénïe | ʺI have come to give your a blessingʺ |
| 59: | ʾá vie ne šteʾjáxte nʾi ʿou dómь vášь da mè púštite ní dumu, méne produmáxte | ʺBut you did not even want to let me in nor tell a word to meʺ |
| 60: | gledaĭte ʾi víe da wtvrьnemь ʾi ja licè moe wt vásь | ʺSo watch me now turn my face from you away tooʺ |
| 61: | ʾi wt svì stranì búĭníci da puštímь na vasь | ʺAnd may I let crazy men from all lands to come upon youʺ |
| 62: | ʾi ljuti, razboĭnici da púštimь da vì sakrušatь; | ʺAnd may I let fierce robbers upon you to destroy youʺ |
| 63: | ʾi bolésti téški da puštímь na vásь da vi ʾisušatь žíli ʾi kósti | ʺAnd may I let grave illnesses to dry your veins and bonesʺ |
| 64: | zaštó e vam takovo trebuválo | ʺBecause thus you had neededʺ |
| 65: | ʾá cr͒tvo moè nb͒nòe ne e vámь trebuválo | ʺBut you had not needed my Kingdom of Heavenʺ |
| 66: | ʾi katò produmà tia strášni réči | And as he said those terrible words, |
| togíva go poznáxa če e bil xr͒to͒va ʾwbrazь | then they realized that he was an image of Christ, | |
| se pretvórilь katò nekóĭ siromaxь čl̃vékь | changed into some poor man | |
| 67: | Tóva čúdo slúšaite ʾi vérvaĭte bráte | Hear and believe this miracle, o brothers, |
| da ne wtvrь´nete ʾóči wt síromasi prósjaci | so that you will not turn your eyes away from poor beggars, | |
| da gì ne pomilúvate | giving them no mercy | |
| 68: | no pomilúvaĭte gi | But give them mercy |
| 69: | ʾi daruváĭte gi da ne rečéte | And give them gifts, so that you will not say: |
| prosjákь xódi | ʺA beggar comes!ʺ | |
| da zatvórite vráta váši wt négo | to close the door for him | |
| 70: | da znáete wt sámago xr͒tá vráta zatvárate | Know, that you are closing the door for Christ Himself |
| 71: | ʾi da ne rečete | And do not say: |
| 72: | prósjakь xódi po prosiju | ʺA beggar comes to beg!ʺ |
| 73: | no da znáete če sámь xr͒tósь xodi na ʾispitïju | Know, that Christ Himself goes to test you |
| 74: | kóĭ dáva síromaxu za bg̃a samómu xr͒tù u ruke dáva | He, who gives to a beggar for God, gives to Christ Himself to His hands |
| 75: | ʾi xr͒tosь, tomúva čl̃veku mnógo bl̃go dobrò u ruke, dáva | And the Christ gives a lot of good to that man in his hands |
| 76: | ʾi ne vidi wt kade mu ʾide | And he does not see, from where (this good) comes |
| 77: | ʾá to sam͛ sì xr͒tosь mu pomága | And it is Christ Himself who helps him |
| 78: | ʾá kóĭ ʾede ʾi pie sasь bogáti, boljáre | And he, who eats and drinks with rich boyars, |
| ʾá siromási ne gléda | and does not look at the poor, | |
| ʾá to skóro zagubuva boljár͛stvo | he soon loses his boyar status (wealth? pride?) | |
| 79: | ʾi prezь ʾigléni uši móže prolázi | And he can (sooner) go through an eye (lit. ʺearʺ) of a needle |
| 80: | ʾá u cr͒tvo nbn͒oe nikákь; ne móže uléznu | But he cannot enter the Kingdom of Heaven by any way |
| 81: | čuete li bl̃véni xr͒tijăni kakvò réče gd͒ь | Do you hear, o blessed Christians, what does God say? |
| 82: | ʾjá za svì vásь žálimь; ʾi za bg͂ati ʾi za sʾiromási | ʺI do mourn for all of you - both the rich and the poorʺ |
| 83: | kóĭ za bg̃a ne dáva | He, who does not give (alms) for (the sake of) God, |
| ʾonь zagubuva cr͒tvo nebésnoe | he loses the Kingdom of Heaven, | |
| ʾi na volju diʾavolsku se predáva | and he puts himself to the will of the Devil | |
| 84: | ʾi diavolь šte da go zavedè u muku večnuju | And the Devil will bring him to the eternal torment |
| 85: | réče xr͒tósь, | (Thus) spoke the Christ: |
| 86: | molím͛ vi se čéda móĭ | ʺI pray you, my children!ʺ |
| 87: | ʾi slušáĭte me | ʺAnd listen to me!ʺ |
| 88: | budete ml͒tívi | ʺBe merciful!ʺ |
| 89: | ʾi čuždin͛ci prïimáĭte u domь vašь | ʺAnd accept foreigners in your houseʺ |
| 90: | pútnici naxránete | ʺFeed the travellersʺ |
| 91: | ʾi žédni napoete | ʺAnd give drink to the thirstyʺ |
| 92: | góli ʾwbléčete | ʺClothe the nakedʺ |
| 93: | bósi ʾwbúĭte | ʺGive shoes to the barefeetʺ |
| 94: | siromási prigledáĭte | ʺTake heed of the poorʺ |
| 95: | ʾi ʾjá vámь da dadémь večnoe bl̃go da dobíete do sítosь | |
| 96: | ʾi da búdete blágoslovéni ʾóc͂a moʾegò | ʺAnd may you be blessed by my Fatherʺ |
| 97: | ʾi da polúčite cr͒stvo móè nbn͒oe | ʺAnd may you receive my Kingdom of Heavenʺ |
| 98: | bg̃u že nášemu slava ʾi čt͒ь ʾi poklonenïe | Glory (be) to our God, and honor and respect, |
| ʾóc͂u i sínu ʾi st̃omu dx̃u | to the Father and the Son, and the Holy Spirit, | |
| ʾi níně ʾi pr͒no ʾi vo véki vekóvь | and now and ever and forever | |
| 99: | ʾámínь | amen |
