2: сло́во ст҃аго їѡ́҅ана мл͒ти́вагѡ ҆и сказанїе за пе́тра митáра:. сїйре́чь каматáра Homily of merciful Saint Ioan and tale of Peter the tax collector, that is, the usurer
3: ни сиромáхꙋ за бг҃а даваше He did not give to paupers for God
4: ни̂ пꙋ́тника ва до́мь сво́й пꙋ́щаше He did not let travellers in his home
5:
То́й бе́ше пе́трь каматарь не́ милости́вь He, Peter, was a merciless usurer
6: ҆и никомꙋ за бг҃а не дáваше And he did not give to anyone for God
7: ҆и на пáмет мꙋ не дохо́де́ше ꙋ цр҃квꙋ да йде бг҃ꙋ да се помо́ли And it did not come to his mind to go to church and pray
8: ҆и коги ви́деше не́кого сиромáха ҆а ҆ѡн͛ си зати́скаше ꙋши́ те да нѐ чꙋе че мꙋ сáка за бг҃а And whenever he saw some pauper, he blocked his ears as not to hear he was begging him for God
9: ҆и много пꙋ́ти ходи́хꙋ при не́го Many times they went up to him
10: та мꙋ̀ сакáхꙋ зá бг҃а And they begged him for God
11: ҆и ѡ́нь и́мь нищо не даваше And he did not give them anything
12: ҆и ва ҆едно̀ вре́ме бе́хꙋ се сабрáли много, сиромáси про́сеци сле́пи ҆и хроми ҆и сꙋхи ҆и маломо́щни And at some time many paupers and beggers and blind men and lame men and haggard men and infirm men had gathered
13: та седе́хꙋ на ҆ꙋлице So they were sitting on the street
14: та сѝ дꙋмахꙋ And they were talking to each other
15: ҆и фáлехꙋ мл͒тиви те чл҃ве́ци що ҅имь давахꙋ, мл͒тинꙗ за бг҃а And they were praising the merciful people who were giving them alms for God
16: ҆и бл҃гославаꙗхꙋ гѝ And they were blessing them
17: ҆и за ни́хь бг҃а мо́лехꙋ And they were praying to God for them
18: ҆á не мл͒ти́ви те ѱꙋ́вахꙋ ҆и прокли́нꙗхꙋ And the merciless ones they cursed and damned
19: дойдѐ дꙋ́ма ҆и за пе́тра не мл͒ти́ваго че ҆о́нь никомꙋ нищо̀ не дáва Word came about merciless Peter too, that he does not give anything to anyone
20: ҆á еди́нь ѿ про́сеци те дꙋ́маше And one of the beggars was saying:
21: ҆áзь дне́ска ще́мь да зе́мемь мл͒ти́ню ѿ не́го ʺToday I will get alms from him!ʺ
22: ҆á ѡни ре́кохꙋ And they said:
23: ҆ѡ чл҃ве́че за що̀ дꙋ́машь ʺO man, what are you talking about?ʺ
24: ҆и ниꙗ свѝ сакáхме ѿ него мл͒ти́ню ʺWe all wanted alms from him tooʺ
25: ҆и не дáде ни ʺand he did not give us anyʺ
26: та те́бе сáмомꙋ ще́ ли дá дадѐ ʺso is he going to give some to you?ʺ
27: ҆и направи́ха междꙋ̀ се́бе ҆ѡбзало́гь дали ще ꙋзѐ ҆или не́ And they made a bet between each other whether he is going to get some or not
28: ҆и ҆ѿи́де ҆един про́секь And one beggar went
29: ҆и станꙋ прѝ врáта пе́трови and he stood at Peter's doors
30: ҆и пет͛рь заносеше на маскꙋ вре́ме хле́бь грáдскомꙋ кне́зꙋ на ҆ѡбедь And Peter used to carry at the lunch bread on a mule to the prince of the city
31: ҆и покло́ни се про́секѡ петрꙋ до зе́млю And the beggar bowed down to the ground to Peter
32: ҆и приле́жно мꙋ мл͒тиню сáкаше He was asking him duly for alms
33: ҆á петрь на про́секо сáсь зꙋби скрь́чеше but Peter was grinding his teeth at the beggar
34: ҆и дꙋмаше and he was saying:
35: да бих нáшль кáмикь глáвꙋ би тѝ строшиль ҆á не за бг҃а да тѝ даде́мь ʺIf I would find a stone, I would crush your head, I would not give you anything for Godʺ
36: ҆и не можѐ да нáйде, кáмикь And he could not find a stone
37: нело̀ ꙋзе хле́бь but he took bread
38: ҆и фрьли срьди́ть and he threw it angrily
39: та ꙋдáри про́сека ҆ꙋ главꙋ so he hit the beggar in the head
40: ҆и тоги́ва сѝ ѿ҆иде ва свои пꙋть̀ And then he went his own way
41: ҆á онꙗ просекь ꙋзе хле́бо † ҆и рече And that beggar took the bread and he said:
43: бг҃ь да прости ʺMay Lord have mercyʺ
44: и ѿиде при дрꙋжи́на та си And he went back to his group
45: ҆и дꙋ́маше ҆имь and he was saying to them:
46: ви́дите ли ʺDo you see?ʺ
47: ѿ сáмою рꙋ́кꙋ негѡ́вꙋ ҆ꙋзе́хь то́ꙗ хле́бь ʺFrom his own hand I took this breadʺ
48: ҆и пофалѝ бг҃а ҆ꙗ́кѡ мл͒тивь ҆есть And he praised the Lord for being very merciful
49: ҆и по неколи́ко днѝ разбо́ле́ се пе́трь And after a few days Peter became sick
50: ҆и лежáше ѕле догдѐ ве́че бе́ше при́шла дш҃а да ꙋмре And he was laying sick until the time had already come for his soul to die
51: ҆и ҆áнг҃ели бж҃їи гле́дахꙋ него́во чꙋдо And the angels of God were looking at his wonder
52: ҆и не найдоха пе́трꙋ неко́е добро̀ да е стори́ль не́где ҆или не́комꙋ не́що да е дáль да мꙋ се нáйде да сѝ сп͒и дш҃ꙋ And they did not find any good Peter has done anywhere or anything he has given to anyone ... to save his sould
53: нело̀ то́кѡ. тоꙗ хле́бь мꙋ се нáйде що го̀ дáде на про́секо But he had only this bread to give to the beggar
54: ҆и това бѝ преко̀ си́лꙋ And that was forced (?)
55: ҆и ре́коше мꙋ ҆áнг҃ски And the angels said to him:
56: ҆иди пе́тре приложѝ ҆ѡще не́що мл͒ти́ню при́ хлебо що с҆и даль про́секꙋ да нѐ ꙋпаднешь ꙋ те́мно҆ѡбрáзни бе́сове ҆и ди́҅аволе да те не ꙋведꙋт ва мꙋ́кꙋ ве́чнꙋю ʺPeter, go add some more alms to the bread you have given to the beggar so you do not fall into dark-shaped demons and devils and so they do not lead you into eternal suffering!ʺ
57: ҆и приложи не́колико мл͒ти́ню And he added some more alms
58: тоги́ва вале́зе пáки дш҃а та мꙋ ꙋ тело́ то Then his soul entered his body again
59: ҆и ѿ тоги́ва стáнꙋ мл͒тивь And from then on he became merciful
60: ҆и раздáде си свѐ ҆имáне то на сиромáси And he gave away all his wealth to paupers
61: ҆и робїе що́ ймаше све́ ги ҆ѡпро́сти And the servants he had, he released them all
62: ҆á на едно́го ро́ба ре́че And to one of the slaves he said:
63: ти се́ди тꙋ́ка ʺYou sit hereʺ
64: та слꙋшáй менѐ ʺand obey meʺ (lit. ʺlisten to meʺ)
65: ҆áко ли мѐ не слꙋ́шашь ҆á ҆ꙗ́ те продáвамь ʺIf you do not obey meʺ (lit. ʺlisten to meʺ), I sell youʺ
66: ҆и ҆ѿво́димь на бж҃їи гро́бь да сѐ поклонимь гд͒ꙋ бг҃ꙋ ї сп͒ꙋ нáшемꙋ їис҃сꙋ х҃ꙋ ʺAnd we go to the Holy Sepulchre to bow down to the Lord and our saviour Jesus Christʺ
67: ҆á робо пе́трꙋ ре́че And the slave said to Peter:
68: гд͒не мо́й да йдеме на ҆иерꙋсали́мь ʺMy lord, let us go to Jerusalemʺ
69: ҆и тамо ще́ш ме продáти ʺAnd you shall sell me thereʺ
70: ҆и дáй ценꙋ мою̀ нá сиромáси ʺAnd give my worth to paupersʺ
71: ҆и тѝ сáмь себе ще́шь да ҆ѡпро́сти́шь ʺAnd so you will absolve yourself tooʺ
72: ҆и ҆ѿидо́ха ва ҆иер͒ли́мь And they went to Jerusalem
73: и поклони́ха се на ст҃ое ме́сто And they bowed down at the holy place
74: ҆и продáде гд͒на сво҆егѡ ро́бо на ҆едного̀ бг҃обо́҆ꙗзнаго чл͒века And the lord sold his slave to one God-fearing man
75: ҆и ценà що ꙋзе ро́бо за гд͒на си раздаде ю на си́ромáси, And the price the slave got for his lord, he gave away to paupers
76: ҆и стáнꙋ петрь си́ромах ҆и продáден And Peter became a pauper and a sold one
77: ҆и поче да рáботи ꙋ гради́нꙋ And he began working in the garden
78: ҆á дрꙋги пꙋти ꙋ ло́зие копáе And other times he dug in the vineyard
79: ҆и дрꙋ́ги рабо́ти слꙋша He was doing (lit. ʺlistening toʺ) other jobs too
80: та сѝ мꙋ́чи тело сво́е So he was tormenting his body
81: ҆и доидоше гд͒нꙋ пе́тровомꙋ го́ске And guests came over to Peter's lord
82: ҆и седнахꙋ на ҆ѡбедь ꙋ гд͒на пе́троваго And they sat down to have a lunch at Peter's lord's
83: ҆á пе́трь пани́ци ҆изно́сеше ҆и ꙋно́сеше And Peter was bringing plates in and out
84: ҆á госке то пе́тра познáхꙋ And the guests recognized Peter
85: ҆и дꙋмахꙋ And they were saying:
86: ва ҆истинꙋ пе́трь е͒ то́ва ʺThis is really Peter!ʺ
87: ҆и казахꙋ господи́нꙋ пе́тровомꙋ And they said to Peter's lord:
88: знáй брáте ʺKnow, brotherʺ
89: пе́трь голе́мь болꙗ́ринь бе́ше ꙋ него́вꙋ зе́млю ʺPeter was a big boyar in his landʺ
90: ҆и све ҆именїе сво́е раздáде на си́роти ʺAnd he gave away all his wealth to paupersʺ
91: ҆и мно́го рáби сво́й ҆ѡпрости́ль ʺAnd he released many of his slavesʺ
92: ҆á пе́трь предь врáта слꙋ́шаше що дꙋ́маха го́ске то за не́гѡ And Peter was listening in front of the door to what the guests were saying about him
93: ҆и ҆ѡстáви пани́цꙋ And he left the plate
94: ҆и изле́зе and he went out
95: ҆и бе́ше врáтарь. на то́҆ꙗ до́мь глꙋхь ҆и не́мь And the doorman of this house was deaf and mute
96: дрꙋ́го ни́що нѐ рабо́теше He did not do any other work
97: токо̀ ҆ѿвáраше ҆и затвáраше He was just opening and closing
98: Тогивà ре́че ҆емꙋ пе́трь Then Peter said to him:
99: ѡ͒ вратáрꙋ во ҆име гд͒а нашего їис҃а хр͒тà ҆ѿвори́ ми врáта та ʺO doorman, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, open the door for me!ʺ
100: ҆и ҆онь мꙋ ѿтво́ри врáта And he opened the door for him
101: ҆излезе петрь Peter went out
102: ҆и побеже́ and he ran away
103: ҆о слава чл҃ве́ческа O human glory!
104: ҆и като̀ бе́ше ҆ѡн҆ꙗ́ чл҃ве́кь глꙋ́хь ҆и не́мь And as that man was deaf and mute
105: ҆и ҆ѿде ско́ро he quickly went
106: ҆и кáза гд͒нꙋ сво́҅емꙋ and he said to his lord:
107: гд͒не вели́кь рáбь бж҃и побе́же ѿ нáсь ʺMy lord, the great servant of God ran away from us!ʺ
108: ҆á гд͒инь ре́че вратарꙋ And the lord said to the doorman:
109: защо ҆ѿво́ри тѝ ро́бꙋ моемꙋ врáта ʺWhy did you open the door for my slaveʺ
110: та побе́же ʺso he ran away?ʺ
111: ҆á вратáрь каже And the doorman said:
112: гд͒не закле́ ме за йме гд͒а нáшего ис͒са хр͒та ʺO lord, he sweared me in the name of our Lord Jesus Christʺ
113: ҆и ꙗ мꙋ ҆ѿвори́хь врата ʺAnd I opened the door for himʺ
114: ҆и видо́хь че ҆изиде плáмень ҆изь ꙋста негѡ́ви ʺAnd I saw that a flame was coming out of his mouthʺ
115: ҆и до́качи плáмень ꙋши мо́й ҆и ꙗзи́кь мо́й ʺAnd the flame touched my ears and my tongueʺ
116: тоги́ва прочꙋ́хь ҆и продꙋмáхь ʺThen I could hear and talk againʺ
117: ҆и ҆они ско́ро по҆идо́ха по не́го And they quickly followed him
118: ҆и не наидо́ха го And they did not find him
119: ҆и прослави́ша б҃а And they praised God
