Tóĭ béše pétrь kamatarь né milostívь | He, Peter, was a merciless usurer | |
6: | ʾi nikomu za bg̃a ne dávaše | And he did not give to anyone for God |
7: | ʾi na pámet mu ne doxódéše u cr͂kvu da ĭde bg̃u da se pomóli | And it did not come to his mind to go to church and pray |
8: | ʾi kogi vídeše nékogo siromáxa ʾa ʾwn͛ si zatískaše uší te da nè čue če mu sáka za bg͂a | And whenever he saw some pauper, he blocked his ears as not to hear he was begging him for God |
9: | ʾi mnogo púti xodíxu pri négo | Many times they went up to him |
10: | ta mù sakáxu zá bg̃a | And they begged him for God |
11: | ʾi w´nь ímь ništo ne davaše | And he did not give them anything |
12: | ʾi va ʾednò vréme béxu se sabráli mnogo, siromási próseci slépi ʾi xromi ʾi suxi ʾi malomóštni | And at some time many paupers and beggers and blind men and lame men and haggard men and infirm men had gathered |
13: | ta sedéxu na ʾulice | So they were sitting on the street |
14: | ta sì dumaxu | And they were talking to each other |
15: | ʾi fálexu ml͒tivi te čl̃véci što ʿimь davaxu, ml͒tinja za bg̃a | And they were praising the merciful people who were giving them alms for God |
16: | ʾi bl̃goslavajaxu gì | And they were blessing them |
17: | ʾi za níxь bg̃a mólexu | And they were praying to God for them |
18: | ʾá ne ml͒tívi te ѱúvaxu ʾi proklínjaxu | And the merciless ones they cursed and damned |
19: | doĭdè dúma ʾi za pétra ne ml͒tívago če ʾónь nikomu ništò ne dáva | Word came about merciless Peter too, that he does not give anything to anyone |
20: | ʾá edínь wt próseci te dúmaše | And one of the beggars was saying: |
21: | ʾázь dnéska štémь da zémemь ml͒tínju wt négo | ʺToday I will get alms from him!ʺ |
22: | ʾá wni rékoxu | And they said: |
23: | ʾw čl̃véče za štò dúmašь | ʺO man, what are you talking about?ʺ |
24: | ʾi nija svì sakáxme wt nego ml͒tínju | ʺWe all wanted alms from him tooʺ |
25: | ʾi ne dáde ni | ʺand he did not give us anyʺ |
26: | ta tébe sámomu šté li dá dadè | ʺso is he going to give some to you?ʺ |
27: | ʾi napravíxa meždù sébe ʾwbzalógь dali šte uzè ʾili né | And they made a bet between each other whether he is going to get some or not |
28: | ʾi ʾwtíde ʾedin prósekь | And one beggar went |
29: | ʾi stanu prì vráta pétrovi | and he stood at Peter's doors |
30: | ʾi pet͛rь zanoseše na masku vréme xlébь grádskomu knézu na ʾwbedь | And Peter used to carry at the lunch bread on a mule to the prince of the city |
31: | ʾi poklóni se prósekw petru do zémlju | And the beggar bowed down to the ground to Peter |
32: | ʾi priléžno mu ml͒tinju sákaše | He was asking him duly for alms |
33: | ʾá petrь na próseko sásь zubi skrь´češe | but Peter was grinding his teeth at the beggar |
34: | ʾi dumaše | and he was saying: |
35: | da bix nášlь kámikь glávu bi tì strošilь ʾá ne za bg̃a da tì dadémь | ʺIf I would find a stone, I would crush your head, I would not give you anything for Godʺ |
36: | ʾi ne možè da náĭde, kámikь | And he could not find a stone |
37: | nelò uze xlébь | but he took bread |
38: | ʾi frьli srьdítь | and he threw it angrily |
39: | ta udári próseka ʾu glavu | so he hit the beggar in the head |
40: | ʾi togíva sì wtʾide va svoi putь` | And then he went his own way |
41: | ʾá onja prosekь uze xlébo † ʾi reče | And that beggar took the bread and he said: |
43: | bg̃ь da prosti | ʺMay Lord have mercyʺ |
44: | i wtide pri družína ta si | And he went back to his group |
45: | ʾi dúmaše ʾimь | and he was saying to them: |
46: | vídite li | ʺDo you see?ʺ |
47: | wt sámoju rúku negw´vu ʾuzéxь tója xlébь | ʺFrom his own hand I took this breadʺ |
48: | ʾi pofalì bg̃a ʾjákw ml͒tivь ʾestь | And he praised the Lord for being very merciful |
49: | ʾi po nekolíko dnì razbólé se pétrь | And after a few days Peter became sick |
50: | ʾi ležáše źle dogdè véče béše príšla dš̃a da umre | And he was laying sick until the time had already come for his soul to die |
51: | ʾi ʾáng̃eli bž̃ïi glédaxu negóvo čudo | And the angels of God were looking at his wonder |
52: | ʾi ne naĭdoxa pétru nekóe dobrò da e storílь négde ʾili nékomu néšto da e dálь da mu se náĭde da sì sp͒i dš̃u | And they did not find any good Peter has done anywhere or anything he has given to anyone ... to save his sould |
53: | nelò tókw. toja xlébь mu se náĭde što gò dáde na próseko | But he had only this bread to give to the beggar |
54: | ʾi tova bì prekò sílu | And that was forced (?) |
55: | ʾi rékoše mu ʾáng̃ski | And the angels said to him: |
56: | ʾidi pétre priložì ʾwšte néšto ml͒tínju prí xlebo što sʾi dalь próseku da nè upadnešь u témnoʾwbrázni bésove ʾi díʿavole da te ne uvedut va múku véčnuju | ʺPeter, go add some more alms to the bread you have given to the beggar so you do not fall into dark-shaped demons and devils and so they do not lead you into eternal suffering!ʺ |
57: | ʾi priloži nékoliko ml͒tínju | And he added some more alms |
58: | togíva valéze páki dš̃a ta mu u teló to | Then his soul entered his body again |
59: | ʾi wt togíva stánu ml͒tivь | And from then on he became merciful |
60: | ʾi razdáde si svè ʾimáne to na siromási | And he gave away all his wealth to paupers |
61: | ʾi robïe štó ĭmaše své gi ʾwprósti | And the servants he had, he released them all |
62: | ʾá na ednógo róba réče | And to one of the slaves he said: |
63: | ti sédi túka | ʺYou sit hereʺ |
64: | ta slušáĭ menè | ʺand obey meʺ (lit. ʺlisten to meʺ) |
65: | ʾáko li mè ne slúšašь ʾá ʾjá te prodávamь | ʺIf you do not obey meʺ (lit. ʺlisten to meʺ), I sell youʺ |
66: | ʾi ʾwtvódimь na bž̃ïi gróbь da sè poklonimь gd͒u bg̃u ï sp͒u nášemu ïis͂su x͂u | ʺAnd we go to the Holy Sepulchre to bow down to the Lord and our saviour Jesus Christʺ |
67: | ʾá robo pétru réče | And the slave said to Peter: |
68: | gd͒ne móĭ da ĭdeme na ʾierusalímь | ʺMy lord, let us go to Jerusalemʺ |
69: | ʾi tamo štéš me prodáti | ʺAnd you shall sell me thereʺ |
70: | ʾi dáĭ cenu mojù ná siromási | ʺAnd give my worth to paupersʺ |
71: | ʾi tì sámь sebe štéšь da ʾwpróstíšь | ʺAnd so you will absolve yourself tooʺ |
72: | ʾi ʾwtidóxa va ʾier͒límь | And they went to Jerusalem |
73: | i pokloníxa se na st̃oe mésto | And they bowed down at the holy place |
74: | ʾi prodáde gd͒na svoʾegw róbo na ʾednogò bg̃obóʾjaznago čl͒veka | And the lord sold his slave to one God-fearing man |
75: | ʾi cenà što uze róbo za gd͒na si razdade ju na síromási, | And the price the slave got for his lord, he gave away to paupers |
76: | ʾi stánu petrь síromax ʾi prodáden | And Peter became a pauper and a sold one |
77: | ʾi poče da ráboti u gradínu | And he began working in the garden |
78: | ʾá drugi puti u lózie kopáe | And other times he dug in the vineyard |
79: | ʾi drúgi rabóti sluša | He was doing (lit. ʺlistening toʺ) other jobs too |
80: | ta sì múči telo svóe | So he was tormenting his body |
81: | ʾi doidoše gd͒nu pétrovomu góske | And guests came over to Peter's lord |
82: | ʾi sednaxu na ʾwbedь u gd͒na pétrovago | And they sat down to have a lunch at Peter's lord's |
83: | ʾá pétrь paníci ʾiznóseše ʾi unóseše | And Peter was bringing plates in and out |
84: | ʾá goske to pétra poznáxu | And the guests recognized Peter |
85: | ʾi dumaxu | And they were saying: |
86: | va ʾistinu pétrь e͒ tóva | ʺThis is really Peter!ʺ |
87: | ʾi kazaxu gospodínu pétrovomu | And they said to Peter's lord: |
88: | znáĭ bráte | ʺKnow, brotherʺ |
89: | pétrь golémь boljárinь béše u negóvu zémlju | ʺPeter was a big boyar in his landʺ |
90: | ʾi sve ʾimenïe svóe razdáde na síroti | ʺAnd he gave away all his wealth to paupersʺ |
91: | ʾi mnógo rábi svóĭ ʾwprostílь | ʺAnd he released many of his slavesʺ |
92: | ʾá pétrь predь vráta slúšaše što dúmaxa góske to za négw | And Peter was listening in front of the door to what the guests were saying about him |
93: | ʾi ʾwstávi panícu | And he left the plate |
94: | ʾi izléze | and he went out |
95: | ʾi béše vrátarь. na tóʾja dómь gluxь ʾi némь | And the doorman of this house was deaf and mute |
96: | drúgo níšto nè rabóteše | He did not do any other work |
97: | tokò ʾwtváraše ʾi zatváraše | He was just opening and closing |
98: | Togivà réče ʾemu pétrь | Then Peter said to him: |
99: | w͒ vratáru vo ʾime gd͒a našego ïis̃a xr͒tà ʾwtvorí mi vráta ta | ʺO doorman, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, open the door for me!ʺ |
100: | ʾi ʾonь mu wttvóri vráta | And he opened the door for him |
101: | ʾizleze petrь | Peter went out |
102: | ʾi pobežé | and he ran away |
103: | ʾo slava čl͂véčeska | O human glory! |
104: | ʾi katò béše ʾwnʾjá čl̃vékь glúxь ʾi némь | And as that man was deaf and mute |
105: | ʾi ʾwtde skóro | he quickly went |
106: | ʾi káza gd͒nu svóʿemu | and he said to his lord: |
107: | gd͒ne velíkь rábь bž͂i pobéže wt násь | ʺMy lord, the great servant of God ran away from us!ʺ |
108: | ʾá gd͒inь réče vrataru | And the lord said to the doorman: |
109: | zašto ʾwtvóri tì róbu moemu vráta | ʺWhy did you open the door for my slaveʺ |
110: | ta pobéže | ʺso he ran away?ʺ |
111: | ʾá vratárь kaže | And the doorman said: |
112: | gd͒ne zaklé me za ĭme gd͒a nášego is͒sa xr͒ta | ʺO lord, he sweared me in the name of our Lord Jesus Christʺ |
113: | ʾi ja mu ʾwtvoríxь vrata | ʺAnd I opened the door for himʺ |
114: | ʾi vidóxь če ʾizide plámenь ʾizь usta negw´vi | ʺAnd I saw that a flame was coming out of his mouthʺ |
115: | ʾi dókači plámenь uši móĭ ʾi jazíkь móĭ | ʺAnd the flame touched my ears and my tongueʺ |
116: | togíva pročúxь ʾi produmáxь | ʺThen I could hear and talk againʺ |
117: | ʾi ʾoni skóro poʾidóxa po négo | And they quickly followed him |
118: | ʾi ne naidóxa go | And they did not find him |
119: | ʾi proslavíša b̃a | And they praised God |
