2: добре разꙋмейте [Prologue] Understand (it) well!
3: ѡ͒ коли́ко любовь ҆и жáлба имаше ст҃и ꙋченїкь хр͒то́вь и҆ѡань бг҃осло́вь зá хр͒ти́ꙗне [Prologue] Oh, how much love and grief had the holy apostle John the Evangelist for Christians
д҆á ги избáви ѿ гре́хь д҆á не в҆ападнꙋ ва ве́чнꙋю мꙋкꙋ диáволскꙋ .:. [Prologue] so that he saves them from the sin, so that they would not fall into the eternal torment of the Devil
4: ѡч҃е: бл: [Prologue] Father, bless (the reader)!
5: Прїйде вели́ки ꙋчн҃икь хр͒то́вь їѡань бг҃осло́вь ♣ ва грáдь ҆áси́йски John the Evangelist, the great apostle of Christ, came to the city of Asia
6: ҆и найде тáмѡ ҆едниго̀ млáдаго, мом͛ка ѿ добрà ро́да ҆и на лице ҆ꙗ́кѡ хꙋ́бавь and he found there a young boy from a good family and very pretty in the face
7: ҆и като го̀ ви́де ҆á ҆ѡнь поми́сли да го̀ преѡбрь́не на хр͒тиꙗ́н͛ска вера да бꙋ́де ве́рень and as (John) saw him, he decided to turn him to Christian faith, to make him a believer
8: ҆и поꙋчи́ го дово́лно на запове́дь бж҃ию and he taught him well about the law of God
9: та пá го тоги́ва прив҆еде́ ско́ро прѝ влдкꙋ дето седе́ше ꙋ то́ıӑ грáдь and then he brought him to a bishop, who sat in that city
10: ҆и ре́че мꙋ ст҃и ҆и҆ѡань and St. John said to him:
11: ѡ͒ влдко ҆ете ти предáвам того́ва мом͛ка ʺO bishop, I gave you here this boy,ʺ
да го̀ ҆изьꙋчи́шь да сѐ поткàнı҆á ст҃омꙋ дх҃ꙋ ʺso that you teach him to follow the Holy Spirit,ʺ
҆и да го̀ зачꙋ́вашь ѿ васàкаквà злà рáбота ʺand so that you protect him from any evil thingʺ
12: токо товà ре́че ст҃и ҆иѡань St. John said only that
13: па ѿиде по дрꙋ́ги, стрáни and he went to other countries,
да ꙋ̀чи не вернѝ чл҃веци да вер͛вать ва хр͒та to teach non-believers to believe in Christ
14: ҆á ҆ѡнꙗ влдка що бе́ше ꙋ аси́ски грáдь та приве́де мом͛ка то́го and the bishop, who was in the city of Asia, brought the boy
15: тá го наꙋчи да ве́р͛ва ст҃аго, дх҃а, and he taught him to believe (in) Holy Spirit
16: ҆и зачꙋвá го ѿ васакаква зла and he protected him from every evil
17: ҆и покр͒ти́ го and he baptized him
18: ҆и какво го покр͒тѝ влдка та ҆á ѡнь се ҆ѡсло̀бо́ди and when the bishop baptized him, he freed himself
19: ҆и ре́че and he said:
20: па сегà то҆ꙗ́ момькь не щѐ вече никакво̀ зло да напрáви ʺand now that boy will not do any evilʺ
21: че го ҆изьꙋчи́хь ʺbecause I taught himʺ
22: ҆и кр͒тих го ʺand I baptized himʺ
23: ҆и зачꙋвах го да не сто́ри вечѐ никáкво зло ʺand I protected him, so that he would not do anything evilʺ
24: когѝ ҆онꙗ момь́кь найде дрꙋжи́на та поиде сáсь ни́хь да едѐ скꙋпи го́зби мло́го ҆и да пїе ви́но без ме́ра as the boy found a band, he went with them to eat precious meals and drink wine without measure
25: ҆и пойде по ло́шь пꙋ́ть по же́ни ҆и по крáжба and he went on the path of evil - of adultery (ʺwomenʺ) and of theft
26: та па го̀ токо̀ пове́доха ҆ѡнїꙗ безбо́жни мꙋ́жїе ҆и ꙋ горꙋ да прáвать зло̀ and then those godless men led him to a mountain to do evil
27: та пà бе́ше ҆о́нꙗ момь́кь на снáгꙋ голе́мь ҆и ви́сокь and the boy was by body a big and high one
28: та го̀ постави́хꙋ да ги́мь бꙋ́де воево́да so they made him to be their leader
29: ҆и като го наре́коха разбо́йници те да гим бꙋ́де воево́да and when the robbers declared him to be their leader,
҆á ҆ѡнь тоги́ва стáнꙋ ҆ꙗ́кѡ̀ нѐ мл͒ти́вь ҆и зль ҆и бе́зьбо́жень ҆и лю́ть then he became very merciless, and evil, and godless, and fierce
30: ҆и ходѝ. ҆еднà го́дина and he walked (thus) for a year
31: та правѝ зло̀. and he did evil
32: се́ла на ҆ѡгнь: го́реше he burnt villages by fire
33: ҆и мло́го чл҃ве́ци мо́реше and he was killing many people
34: ҆и мло́го сребро̀ ҆и злáто ҆ѡби́раше and he robbed a lot of silver and gold
35: ҆и мло́го крь́ви члове́чески ҆проли́ваше ꙗк҆ѡ мло́го and he spilled sooo much human blood
36: ҆и големѡ зло сто́ри догдѐ дойде ст҃и їѡань бг҃ослов and he did great evil, until St. John the Evangelist came (again)
37: ҆и дойде and he came
38: ҆и ре́че ї҆ѡ҆ань and John said:
39: ѡ͒ влдко каде́ е то́ꙗ мо́мькь що ти́ го предáдохь да го наꙋчиш на хр͒ти҆ꙗнскꙋ ве́рꙋ ҆и да го̀ кр͒ти́шь ʺO bishop, where is the boy I gave to you, to teach him Christian faith and to baptize him?ʺ
40: ҆á онꙗ влàди́ка фáнꙋ да сѐ чꙋди защо̀ питꙋ́ва ст҃и ҆и҆ѡань зá ѡного́ва мо́мкà but the bishop began to wonder, why St. John asked about the boy
41: че бе́ше минꙋ́ла ҆еднà годи́на because one year had passed
42: ҆ѡти́шль бе́ше ꙋ горꙋ разбо́иник (since) he had gone to the mountain (as a) robber
43: та го̀ бе́ше зáбовари́ль влдкá so the bishop had forgotten him
44: та па като мꙋ̀ ре́че ст҃и їѡӑнь ҆á ѡ̀нь го́р͛ко ҆ꙋздь́хна and thus, as St. John told him (that), he grievously sighed
45: ҆и заплáка сáсь сльзи and he wept with tears
46: ҆и ре́че and he said:
47: ѡ͒ їѡӑне брáте: ҆ꙋмре то҆ꙗ́ мо́мкь дето̀ ми го тѝ бе́ше предáль ʺO John, my brother, that boy, whom you had given me, diedʺ
48: ҆á їѡӑнь мꙋ ре́че but John said to him:
49: ѡ͒ влдко сáсь ко́й ҆ѡбрáзь ҆и сась ко́й ҆о́ч҃и мо́жешь ре́кти ʺO bishop, by which image and by which eyes could you say,ʺ
че ѐ ҆о́ꙋмре́ль то́҆ꙗ́ мом͛кь що го̀ бе́хь ҆ꙗ́ тебѐ предáль ʺthat the boy, whom I had given to you, had died?ʺ
50: тоги́ва влдка та рече ҆исти́на then the bishop told the truth:
51: ҆о́ч҃е ҆и брáте ї҅ѡане ҆ѡти́дѐ сáсь разбо́йници ʺO father and brother John, he went with robbersʺ
52: ҆и стáналь е ҆ꙗ́ко зль гꙋбїтель ҆и ҆ꙗ́ко лют разбо́йникь ʺand he became a very evil murderer and very fierce robberʺ
53: тоги́ва ре́че ҆иѡӑнь then John said:
54: ѡ͒ влдко не бех ли́ те ҆ѡстави́ль да хрáнишь того́ва мо́м͛кà ʺO bishop, did I not leave you to raise that boy?ʺ
55: ҆и
не бех͛ ли те ҆о́стáвиль да чꙋ́вашь стáдо ҆и ҆овцѝ хр͒то́ви ʺand did I not leave you, to guard the herd and sheep of Christ?ʺ
56: ҆á тѝ ги ҆о́стави като еди́нь ле́нивь пасти́рь когѝ заспѝ ҆и не радѝ са сво́ѐ стáдо ʺbut you left him as a lazy shepherd, when he falls asleep and does not work with his herdʺ
57: та го̀ ҆испꙋщи ʺand thus he lets it roam freelyʺ
58: та гѝ наме́рать злѝ вль́ци ʺand then evil wolves find themʺ
59: та гѝ ҆изморат ʺand then they slaughter themʺ
60: такà ҆и тѝ ҆ѡ чл҃вече ҆испꙋ́щи того́ва мом͛ка да сѝ погꙋбѝ дш҃ꙋ сáсь разбойници ʺand thus you too, o man, have released that boy, so that he loses his soul with robbersʺ
61: кáкво̀ ҆ꙗ́ тебѐ ре́кохь ʺwhat did I tell you?ʺ
62: ҆á тѝ не можѐ да ꙋтврьди́шь мо́҆ꙗ та дꙋма де ʺbut you just could not fulfill my word!ʺ
63: се́га ско́ро да мѝ приве́дешь конꙗ̀ ʺnow, bring to me a horse soonʺ
да васе́днемь на не́го да йдемь ꙋ го́рꙋ да найдемь мом͛ка того каде́ е ʺso that I sit on it, to go to the mountain, to find the boy, where(ver) he isʺ
64: ҆и приве́доха мꙋ конꙗ̀ and they brought him a horse
65: ҆и васе́де ҆и҆ѡань на него and John mounted it
66: ҆и брьзо конꙗ̀ кáраше and he drove the horse fast
67: ҆и ми́слеше кáто ѐ ҆ѡти́шаль момь́ко ꙋ горꙋ ҆и ѿ то́лко вре́ме та чинѝ зло̀ ҆о́нь се зáгꙋби and he thought: ʺas the boy went to the mountain, and he does evil for so much time, he is lostʺ
68: ҆и ѿпáде ѿ слáвꙋ бж҃їю ʺand he fell away from the divine gloryʺ
69: ҆и ѡти́де ст҃и ҆иѡӑнь ꙋ го́рꙋ and St. John went to the mountain
70: ҆и найде ҆ѡнїꙗ злѝ разбо́йници тáмо and he found the evil robbers there
че седе́хꙋ по́дь еднà дебе́ла сен͛кꙗ as they sat beneath a broad shadow
71: ҆и ви́де го ҆еди́нь стражáрь що́ ймь чꙋ́ваше стрáжꙋ and a guard saw him, who was holding his duty
72: ҆и зле го́неше стражáрь їѡáна да го̀ ꙋби́е and the guard fiercely chased John to kill him
73: защо́ ги е ҆изьдебиль because he had discovered them
74: та е прише́ль бли́зꙋ при ни́хь and he came close to them
75: ҆á ҆ѡнь гим͛ се мелеше but he prayed them
76: ҆и дꙋ́маше And he spoke:
77: ѡ͒ юнáче не гонете мене ʺO brave one, do not chase me!ʺ
78: че сьмь ҆ꙗ́ стáрь ʺbecause I am oldʺ
79: нело́ ме воде́те при́ кне́за вáшего що ви ѐ юнáчка войвода ʺbut bring me to your duke, (to the one) who is your commanderʺ
80: ҆и заве́доха го̀ при ҆о́ни́ꙗ̀ юнáци and they brough him to those heroes
81: ҆и ви́де ї҆ѡàнь оного́вà мом͛кà че сто́й ва҆ѡрꙋже́нь сáсь стрáшно ҆ѡрꙋжїе and John saw the boy, as he stood armed with terrible weapons
82: ҆и като̀ ви́де момь́ко ї҆ѡ҆анà ҆á ҆ѡнь се ҆ꙗ́кѡ̀ засрáми and as the boy saw John, he became very ashamed
83: ҆и побе́же ѿ срáмь да мꙋ̀ не сто́й пре́дь ҆о́ч҃и and he ran away because of the shame, not to stand in front of his eyes
84: а ст҃и ҆иѡӑнь тоги́ва зáбоварѝ стáрось but then St. John forgot his old age
85: та по̀йде по ҆ѡного́ва мом͛кà and he followed the boy
86: та мꙋ кре́пко дꙋмаше and he spoke to him strongly:
87: защо бе́гашь ѿ мене че́до моѐ ʺWhy do you run away from me, my child?ʺ
88: ҆áзь ҆есмь ҆оц҃ь тво́й ʺI am your father!ʺ
89: защо ме тол͛ко трꙋ́дишь сн҃е; ʺwhy do you make me so much work, son?ʺ
90: стáнѝ ʺstay!ʺ
91: помилꙋй ме ʺhave mercy with me!ʺ
92: че́ смь ҆ꙗ́ ѿ далекь ʺbecause I am from far awayʺ
93: па сáмь стáрь ҆и не мо́щень ʺand I am old and weakʺ
94: стáни ʺstay!ʺ
95: не бо́й се ʺdo not fear!ʺ
96: че́ ймамь наде́ждꙋ на бг҃а да сп͒и́шь дш҃ꙋ твою̀ ʺfor I do have hopes in God, that you will save your soulʺ
97: ҆ꙗ́ за тебѐ дꙋ́мамь прѝ бг҃а ʺI speak to God for your sakeʺ
98: ҆ꙗ́ за те́бе дш҃ꙋ мою полаге́емь ʺI offer my soul for youʺ
99: та то́ли́ко се́бе трꙋ́димь ʺand I put so much effortʺ
100: не бо́й се че́до ʺdo not fear, child!ʺ
101: стáни ʺstay!ʺ
102: не́ плаши́ се ʺdo not fear!ʺ
103: хр͒то́сь мѐ пꙋ́щи да тѝ кáжемь че щѐ да тѝ ҆ѡпро́сти сагрешенїе то що сѝ сагреши́ль ʺThe Christ sent me to tell you, that he will forgive the sin you have committedʺ
104: ҆ꙗ за те́бе ходи́мь ʺI walk for youʺ (?)
105: ҆и крь́ви на ме́не да бꙋ́дꙋть що си́ ги ти прол҆иꙗль ʺand may the bloods you have spilled be on meʺ
106: ҆и на мою шию̀ да бꙋ́де грех тво́й ʺand may your sin will be on my headʺ
107: си́не послꙋ́шай ме ʺhear me, son!ʺ
108: стáни ʺstay!ʺ
109: не бо́й се ʺhave no fear!ʺ
110: ҆и като чꙋ ти́ꙗ дꙋ́ми стáнꙋ момь́ко and as the boy heard those words, he stood
111: ҆и фрь́ли ҆о́рꙋжїе ѿ се́бе and he threw the weapons away from himself
112: ҆и пáднꙋ на зе́млю and he fell on the ground
113: ҆и заплáка го́рко: and he cried bitterly
114: ҆и при́стꙋпи близꙋ прѝ ст҃го ї҆ѡана and he came closer to St. John
115: поцеловá мꙋ но́гꙋ ҆и де́сницꙋ and he kissed his foot and right hand
116: ҆и ре́че мꙋ ҆он҆ꙗ́ мо́мькь and the boy said to him:
117: ҆оче ст҃и ҆и҆ѡане бꙋ́ди мѝ на по́мощь ʺO father, St. John, be my helper!ʺ
118: защо́ смь ҅ꙗ мно́го ѕло̀ стори́ль ʺbecause I have committed much evilʺ
119: ҆и мно́го крь́вь самь чловеческꙋ ҆изли́҅ꙗль ʺand I spilled a lot of human bloodʺ
120: ҆и товà дꙋ́маше and he spoke thus
121: ҆и десни́цꙋ свою̀ кри́҅еше and he covered his right hand
122: защо̀ бе́ше крь́вава because it was bloody
123: ҆и заведе го ст҃и їѡӑнь ꙋ цр҃квꙋ and St. John brought him to a church
124: ҆и исповедá го and he made him confess
125: ҆и ҆ѡнь се пока҆ꙗ́ сáсь мно́го моленїе бг҃ꙋ ҆и сась плáчь and he repented with much prayer to God and crying
126: ҆и по́клони чи́неше на васáки де́нь ҆и на васакꙋ нощь and he knelt every day and every night
127: тá мꙋ ҆ѡпро́сти бг҃ь що бе́ше согре́шил and God forgave him, what he had sinned
128: ҆и ҆ѡще мно́го вре́ме би́ жи́вь догдѐ при-бли́жи самрь́тни ча͒ and he lived for a long time, until the time of death came closer
129: та предáде бг҃ꙋ дш҃ꙋ сво́ю ва рꙋ́це and then he gave his soul to God's hands
130: ҆и ꙋспе са ми́ромь and he fell to dormition with peace
131: то́мꙋ же слва ҆и чт͒ь ҆и поклоненїе, to him be the glory and honor and respect
҆оц҃ꙋ, ҆и сн҃ꙋ, ҆и ст҃омꙋ дх҃ꙋ to the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit
ни́нѣ̀, ҆и пр͒но, ҆и во ве́кѝ, вековь now and ever, and forever
132: ҆ами́нь, amen
133: ҆ѡ ҆ѡ́ц҃и ◄ ҆или ҆и ниꙗ книжо́вници ванимайте себѐ o fathers, but also we, writers, take heed of yourself!
134: ҆оꙋ́вѝ коли́ко разꙋ́мь тре́бꙋва да разꙋмеешь сїе Woe, how much reason is needed to understand this!
