 | когѝ ҆онꙗ момь́кь найде дрꙋжи́на та поиде сáсь ни́хь да едѐ скꙋпи го́зби мло́го ҆и да пїе ви́но без ме́ра | as the boy found a band, he went with them to eat precious meals and drink wine without measure |
 | ҆и пойде по ло́шь пꙋ́ть по же́ни ҆и по крáжба | and he went on the path of evil - of adultery (ʺwomenʺ) and of theft |
 | та па го̀ токо̀ пове́доха ҆ѡнїꙗ безбо́жни мꙋ́жїе ҆и ꙋ горꙋ да прáвать зло̀ | and then those godless men led him to a mountain to do evil |
 | та пà бе́ше ҆о́нꙗ момь́кь на снáгꙋ голе́мь ҆и ви́сокь | and the boy was by body a big and high one |

| and he did evil |
 | се́ла на ҆ѡгнь: го́реше | he burnt villages by fire |

 | ҆á онꙗ влàди́ка фáнꙋ да сѐ чꙋди защо̀ питꙋ́ва ст҃и ҆и҆ѡань зá ѡного́ва мо́мкà | but the bishop began to wonder, why St. John asked about the boy |
 | че бе́ше минꙋ́ла ҆еднà годи́на | because one year had passed |
 | ҆ѡти́шль бе́ше ꙋ горꙋ разбо́иник | (since) he had gone to the mountain (as a) robber |
 | та го̀ бе́ше зáбовари́ль влдкá | so the bishop had forgotten him |
 | та па като мꙋ̀ ре́че ст҃и їѡӑнь ҆á ѡ̀нь го́р͛ко ҆ꙋздь́хна | and thus, as St. John told him (that), he grievously sighed |
 | ҆и заплáка сáсь сльзи | and he wept with tears |
 | ҆и ре́че | and he said: |
O John, my brother, that boy, whom you had given me, diedʺ |
 | ҆á їѡӑнь мꙋ ре́че | but John said to him: |
O bishop, by which image and by which eyes could you say,ʺ |

 | тоги́ва влдка та рече ҆исти́на | then the bishop told the truth: |
O father and brother John, he went with robbersʺ |
 | ҆и стáналь е ҆ꙗ́ко зль гꙋбїтель ҆и ҆ꙗ́ко лют разбо́йникь | ʺand he became a very evil murderer and very fierce robberʺ |
 | тоги́ва ре́че ҆иѡӑнь | then John said: |
O bishop, did I not leave you to raise that boy?ʺ |

 | ҆á тѝ ги ҆о́стави като еди́нь ле́нивь пасти́рь когѝ заспѝ ҆и не радѝ са сво́ѐ стáдо | ʺbut you left him as a lazy shepherd, when he falls asleep and does not work with his herdʺ |
 | та го̀ ҆испꙋщи | ʺand thus he lets it roam freelyʺ |
 | та гѝ наме́рать злѝ вль́ци | ʺand then evil wolves find themʺ |
 | та гѝ ҆изморат | ʺand then they slaughter themʺ |
 | такà ҆и тѝ ҆ѡ чл҃вече ҆испꙋ́щи того́ва мом͛ка да сѝ погꙋбѝ дш҃ꙋ сáсь разбойници | ʺand thus you too, o man, have released that boy, so that he loses his soul with robbersʺ |
 | кáкво̀ ҆ꙗ́ тебѐ ре́кохь | ʺwhat did I tell you?ʺ |
 | ҆á тѝ не можѐ да ꙋтврьди́шь мо́҆ꙗ та дꙋма де | ʺbut you just could not fulfill my word!ʺ |
 | се́га ско́ро да мѝ приве́дешь конꙗ̀ | ʺnow, bring to me a horse soonʺ |
да васе́днемь на не́го да йдемь ꙋ го́рꙋ да найдемь мом͛ка того каде́ е | ʺso that I sit on it, to go to the mountain, to find the boy, where(ver) he isʺ | |
 | ҆и приве́доха мꙋ конꙗ̀ | and they brought him a horse |
 | ҆и васе́де ҆и҆ѡань на него | and John mounted it |
 | ҆и брьзо конꙗ̀ кáраше | and he drove the horse fast |
 | ҆и ми́слеше кáто ѐ ҆ѡти́шаль момь́ко ꙋ горꙋ ҆и ѿ то́лко вре́ме та чинѝ зло̀ ҆о́нь се зáгꙋби | and he thought: ʺas the boy went to the mountain, and he does evil for so much time, he is lostʺ |
 | ҆и ѿпáде ѿ слáвꙋ бж҃їю | ʺand he fell away from the divine gloryʺ |
 | ҆и ѡти́де ст҃и ҆иѡӑнь ꙋ го́рꙋ | and St. John went to the mountain |
 | ҆и найде ҆ѡнїꙗ злѝ разбо́йници тáмо | and he found the evil robbers there |

 | ҆и ви́де ї҆ѡàнь оного́вà мом͛кà че сто́й ва҆ѡрꙋже́нь сáсь стрáшно ҆ѡрꙋжїе | and John saw the boy, as he stood armed with terrible weapons |
 | ҆и като̀ ви́де момь́ко ї҆ѡ҆анà ҆á ҆ѡнь се ҆ꙗ́кѡ̀ засрáми | and as the boy saw John, he became very ashamed |
 | ҆и побе́же ѿ срáмь да мꙋ̀ не сто́й пре́дь ҆о́ч҃и | and he ran away because of the shame, not to stand in front of his eyes |

 | та по̀йде по ҆ѡного́ва мом͛кà | and he followed the boy |
 | та мꙋ кре́пко дꙋмаше | and he spoke to him strongly: |
