2: | беше некой мꙋжь | There was a man |
3: | ҆име мꙋ бе́ше дв҃дь | His name was David |
4: | та беше оти́шаль хайдꙋкь | He had become a robber |
5: | ҆ꙋ горꙋ седеше ҆и де́нь ҆и нощь | He was sitting in the forest day and night |
6: | ҆и мло́го ѕло прáвеше | and he was doing much evil |
7: | ҆и мло́го лю́дие ꙋби́ваше | and he was killing many people |
8: | ҆и мло́го крь́ви проли́ваше | and he was shedding much blood |
9: | та не́ маше, ни́где по ѕль чл҃ве́кь ѿ него | so there was not a more evil man than him |
10: | та пà ҆имáше дрꙋжи́на при се́бе бо́ле ѿ три де́сеть дꙋши | and he had a band of more than thirty people with him |
11: | та сáсь нихь то́лкова ѕло прáвеше | and he did much evil with them |
12: | та па сѐ ҆едно вре́ме сми́сли | and at some time he came to himself |
13: | ҆и рече | and he said: |
14: | ѡͯ бж҃е мо́й мили що сам ҆ꙗ́ тов ѕло̀ толко прáвиль | ʺOh my dear Lord, why have I been doing so much evil?ʺ |
15: | ҆ꙗ́ко се ꙋплáши ѿ бг҃а | He became very scared of God |
16: | ҆и ҆ѡстави́ си дрꙋжи́на та ꙋ горꙋ | and he left his band in the forest |
17: | ҆и ҆ѡтѝде на ҆еди́нь монасти́рь | and he went to a monastery |
18: | ҆и потропà на врáта | and he knocked on the door |
19: | ҆и излезе вратáрь | and the doorman came out |
20: | ҆и рече мꙋ | and he said to him: |
21: | що трáжишь ти тꙋка юнáче | ʺWhat are you looking for here, young man?ʺ |
22: | ҆á дв҃дь ре́че | And David said: |
23: | калꙋгерь сакáмь да стáнемь | ʺI want to become a monkʺ |
24: | ҆ѡтворе́те ми врáта | ʺOpen the door for meʺ |
25: | ҆а вратáрь не смꙗ да мꙋ ѡтво́ри врáта | But the doorman did not dare to open the door for him |
26: | нело се врьнꙋ | but he went back |
27: | та казà ҆игꙋменꙋ | and he told the abbot |
28: | ҆а игꙋ́мень при҆иде | and the abbot came |
29: | та при́зре на врáта | and he looked at the door |
30: | ҆и видѐ дв҃да хаидꙋ́ка | and he saw David the robber |
31: | ҆и рече ҆игꙋмень вратáрꙋ | and the abbot said to the doorman: |
32: | не бои се ҆ѡ чедо | ʺFear not, child!ʺ |
33: | стáрь, мꙋ́жь е би́ль дв҃дь | David was an old man |
34: | не́ бои се | ʺFear notʺ |
35: | ҆и рече ҆игꙋмень дв҃дꙋ | And the abbot said to David: |
36: | не можеме н҆и́ꙗ да ѡтво́риме те́бе врáта | ʺWe cannot open the door for youʺ |
37: | защо ти тꙋ́ка не мо́жешь трьпе́ти | ʺfor you cannot last hereʺ |
38: | защо̀ тꙋка мло́го рáбота ҆има | ʺfor there is a lot of work hereʺ |
39: | ҆и мло́го трьпенїе за хле́бь ҆имаме | ʺand we suffer a lot for our breadʺ |
40: | по ҆единь пꙋть днеска хле́бь- едеме | ʺToday we eat bread only once a dayʺ |
41: | ти монастир͛ска рабо́та не мо́жешь дрьжáти | ʺYou cannot do monastery workʺ |
42: | ҆á давид ҆имь дꙋмáше | But David was saying to them: |
43: | ҆о́ц҃и ст҃и вїе що ми рече́те ҆ꙗ щемь свѐ вась послꙋшáти | ʺO, holy fathers, I will do whatever you tell me to!ʺ |
44: | токо ме прифане́те | ʺJust accept meʺ |
45: | дꙋмáше дв҃дь | David was speaking |
46: | ҆и молеш се | and he was begging |
47: | ҆á игꙋ́мен͛ мꙋ рече | and the abbot said to him: |
48: | не може́шь ти тꙋ́ка да бꙋ̀дешь | ʺYou cannot be hereʺ |
49: | тоги́ва дв҃дь ре́че ҆игꙋменꙋ | Then David said to the abbot: |
50: | да ви́дишь ҆и ти ҆о́ч҃е | ʺYou should see too, fatherʺ |
51: | ҆ꙗ́ смь дв҃дь стареишина на хайдꙋци те | ʺI am David, the leader of robbersʺ |
52: | ꙗ смь доше́ль при вáсь да се ҆исповедáмь | ʺI have come to you to confessʺ |
҆и да поплаче́мь за гре́хове те мо́й що смь́ ги направиль | ʺand to cry about my sins I have commitedʺ | |
53: | ҆á ви́е не ще́те да мѐ прифáнете | ʺBut you do not want to accept meʺ |
54: | виѐ грех сась ме́не приби́рате | ʺYou are taking in a sin with meʺ |
55: | ҆áли ако пáкь ҆ѡѳи́демь прѝ мой те дрꙋжина щото гѝ ҆ѡставих ꙋ гора та | ʺBut if I go again to my band that I left in the forestʺ |
що пле́нехь се́ла ҆и градове сас ни́хь | ʺand with whom I used to loot villages and townsʺ | |
та ще́мь да гѝ доведе́мь | ʺI will bring them with meʺ | |
56: | та вѝ сви́н͛ца ҆изби́вам | ʺand I will kill you allʺ |
57: | ҆и стро́шꙋвамь монáстиро вáшь | and I will destroy your monastery |
58: | ҆и какво чꙋ ҆игꙋмень тáꙗ дꙋ́ма ѿ дв҃да | And when the abbot heard this word from David |
҆á ҆ѡнь го прифанꙋ ꙋ ми͒трь | he accepted him into the monastery | |
59: | ҆и постри́же го | and he cut his hair |
60: | и даде мꙋ ҆áнгел͒ки ҆о́брáзь | and gave him the face of an angel |
61: | тоги́ва почѐ дв҃дь да дрь́жи по́сть ҆и воздрьжанїе | Then David began to keep fast and abstinence |
62: | ҆и сми́ри се́бе | and he humbled himself |
63: | па ҆оти́де ꙋ келїю | and he went into a cell |
64: | и гáвриль ҆áрх҃гель стáнꙋ пре́дь не́го | and Archagel Gabriel stood up before him |
65: | та мꙋ дꙋма, | and spoke to him: |
66: | дв҃де, дв҃де, простил͛ те е гд͒ь ѿ грехь тво́й | ʺDavid, David, God has forgiven you your sins!ʺ |
67: | ҆á ѿ сеги ще́шь чꙋдеса да прáвиш | ʺAnd from now on you will do miraclesʺ |
68: | ҆á дв҃дь ре́че ҆áнг҃лꙋ | And David said to the Archangel: |
69: | на тáꙗ дꙋ́ма ве́рꙋ не мо́гꙋ фанꙋ́ти | ʺI cannot believe this wordʺ |
70: | ҆ꙗ́ мло́го гре́хь имамь кол͛ко песакь по мо́ре | ʺI have as much sin as there is sand at the seaʺ |
71: | ҆áнг҃ель ре́че дв҃дꙋ | The angel said to David: |
72: | дв҃де ҆ꙗ́ ҆ѡтидо́хь при захари́ю | ʺDavid, I went to Zechariahʺ |
73: | та мꙋ̀ рекохь | ʺAnd I said to him:ʺ |
74: | захарїе ти ще́шь да добие́шь си́на | ʺZechariah, you will get a sonʺ |
75: | ҆á ѡн͛ ме не пове́рва | ʺand he did not believe meʺ |
76: | ҆á ꙗ мꙋ све́зáхь ҆ꙗ́зикь да ве́р͛ва че ме е гд͒ь пꙋщи́ль да пона҆ꙋчимь чл҃века на пáметь | ʺAnd I tied his tongue so he believes that God sent me to bring the man to his mindʺ |
77: | дв҃дь се тоги́ва по́клони ҆áнг҃елꙋ | Then David bowed to the angel |
78: | ҆и пáде мꙋ на нозе́ те | and he fell to his knees |
79: | та плаче́ше | and he was crying |
80: | ҆и ҆англꙋ дꙋмаше | and he was speaking to the angel |
81: | когѝ бехь разбойникь ҆и мло́го зло прáвехь ҆и млого крь́ви проли́вахь | ʺWhen I was a robber and did much evil and shedded much bloodʺ |
тоги́ва не зна҆ꙗхь какво̀ бг҃ꙋ да ꙋгодимь | ʺthen I did not know how to please Godʺ | |
82: | ҆á сеги хо́щꙋ работáти гд͒ви | ʺbut now I want to work for the Lordʺ |
83: | и потомь дв҃дь млого чꙋдеса сатворѝ | And then David did many miracles |
84: | сле́пи просве́ти | He made the blind see |
85: | хромѝ ҆исцели | He cured the lame |
86: | та прохо́дихꙋ | so they started walking |
87: | бе́сни ҆исце́ли | He cured the mad |
88: | та пеехꙋ пе́снь ꙋ цр҃квꙋ на молитвꙋ | so they sang songs during the prayer at the church |
89: | томꙋ же слва ҆и чт͒ь ҆и поклоненїе | and may praise and honor and respect be to him |
҆о́ц҃ꙋ ҆и сн҃ꙋ ҆и ст҃омꙋ дх҃ꙋ | (and) to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit | |
нин҃ꙗ ҆и присно ҆и во ве́ки веко́вь | now and ever and forever | |
